Drake And Nicki Minaj: A Timeline To Twitter Matrimony

A look at the ‘super-close’ Young Money stars’ relationship. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake and Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Drake and Nicki Minaj are two of the biggest MCs reppin’ Young Money and on Friday, the hitmaking rappers made major headlines when they tweeted that they had tied the knot. Even if unions announced on social-networking sites aren’t recognized by law, the duo’s strong bond is undeniable. Here’s a timeline of Drake and Nicki Minaj’s moments in the spotlight on their road to Twitter matrimony:

Nicki Minaj Told Jay Sean She Was ‘Going In’ On ‘2012’

Young Money rapper is uniquely ‘fun and playful’ on the track, British crooner tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images It will come as no surprise to fans of Jay Sean that his new single, “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” boasts bars by Young Money princess Nicki Minaj. After all, his U.S. debut single, “Down,” features Lil Wayne , which was followed by Lil Jon and Sean Paul jumping on “Do You Remember.” Still, the Hounslow hero (Jay Sean was born near the Wimbledon site in West London) was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from Miss Minaj earlier this year. “It was actually a surprise for me,” Sean told MTV News last week. “Nicki Minaj heard [‘2012’], she called me and … she was like, ‘I love it! It’s sick. I’m going in on this!’ “I’m a fan of Nicki’s. I think she’s incredible,” he continued. “And I had wanted to work with her for a while. But when she picked this song out herself, I was like, ‘Go ahead. Bless it. Please.’ ” Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful hip-hop artists at the moment, all before her debut album is released. And Jay Sean is pleased not only because her feature in “2012” brings the gravity of her presence, but that she attacked the song with a swagger different from her usual form. “A testament to a great artist is the fact that they are able to interpret the song for what it is,” Sean said. “Now, Nicki is a rapper. This is a pop record. She took the message of having fun and enjoying yourself, living like it’s the end, living every minute like it’s the last, and she put that vibe and that swagger on the track … and that voice is fun and playful on it. It was great.” Minaj also appears in the video for “2012” , which was shot last month in Los Angeles. Jay Sean’s sophomore U.S. effort, Freeze Time, is tentatively set for a November 2 release. Chris Brown Puts His Spin On Nicki Minaj’s ‘Your Love’

Singer remixes the Young Money starlet’s hit song as he promises fans a new album in 2011. By James Dinh Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Despite a year of difficult career speed bumps, including his postponed U.K. promotional tour and the controversy surrounding his Michael Jackson tribute performance at the BET Awards, Chris Brown remains optimistic about getting through the rough times. His latest career move is his remix of Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Your Love,” which the singer posted on Twitter and informed fans that something special may be heading their way. “i just smashed this beat!!! UR LOVE REMIX DONE!!! for the ladies,” he tweeted early Wednesday (August 4). On the cover, Brown sings an ode to his female interest as he belts over the song’s Annie Lennox sample and hip-hop backbeats. “Shorty, I’mma tell you this once/ Girl need it (tonight)/ When I do it to you home and do it right, please believe it/ All night long, baby right now/ When you lay in my arms,” he sings during the chorus. Showing off his versatility, Breezy becomes more aggressive during the song’s second verse both vocally and lyrically as he explicitly raps, “Yeah, let me step up to the plate now/ Big kids in the room, no playground/ I wanna kiss everything from the waist down/ Keep ya ass up and your face down.” And it wouldn’t be right if Brown didn’t name-drop Minaj in the mix that praises a woman in and out of bed. “We can role-play, girl, give it to me now/ I’m giving you a massage/ A booty like Nicki Minaj/ Oh gosh,” he croons. Hours after Brown posted his remix, Nicki seemed satisfied with four different remixes of her song as she urged DJs to start spinning. “Ok DJ’s!!! 4 remixes to ‘your love’ by @rickyrozay, @duttypaul, @chrisbrown and @jaysean and they’re ALL DOPE! Play them! 🙂 #pinkfriday,” she said of her song, which currently holds the #1 spot on the Billboard Rap Songs chart . Aside from posting his cover of Minaj’s song, the singer also asked fans if they wanted another Breezy mixtape. “do yall want an “IN MY ZONE 2″!!! just a thought #inmyzone2,” he tweeted . While another mixtape isn’t certain at this point, Brown assured fans that the follow-up to last year’s Graffiti is in the works. “My new album will come next year or sooner but in the meantime i might ‘I MIGHT’ do something special for yall again!!!” he teased. Back in June, Drake said that he and Brown hit the studio together shortly after attending the 2010 BET Awards. It is unknown what, if anything, the duo cooked up, but the Young Money rapper revealed that he wanted to collaborate with others as his project was finished. “I was studio hopping, seeing where I could lend my hand to whoever’s project since I’ve done mine,” Drake said. Nicki Minaj In ‘Heaven’ Over VMA Nomination

‘I didn’t even think I’d get invited!’ Young Money MC tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News It was just a few years ago when Young Money honey Nicki Minaj would gather ’round the TV at home with her family and settle in to watch the MTV Video Music Awards . But with her first nomination locked down in the hotly contested Best New Artist category at the 2010 VMAs , Minaj said on Tuesday (August 3) that she can hardly believe she’s going to the big game this year. “I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven,” Minaj said from her Los Angeles home about her debut VMA nom. “I definitely thought I’d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I’d get a nomination [this year]. … I didn’t even think I’d get invited!” Not only does Minaj have her golden ticket, she’s going head-to-head with fellow newbies Ke$ha , Jason Der

M.I.A. Says ‘Nicki Minaj Runs Hip-Hop’

‘I just feel like I get her,’ M.I.A. says of the Young Money MC. By Mawuse Ziegbe M.I.A. Photo: Jon Kopaloff/ FilmMagic M.I.A. ‘s brand of glitchy, warbling electro, zany fashion sense and singular vocals make the star one of the most eccentric artists on the scene. Perhaps that’s why the controversial Brit has taken a liking to unconventional MC Nicki Minaj . The two joined forces for the remix of M.I.A.’s “Teqkilla” (a track she called “exciting”), and the artist said she was impressed by Minaj’s imaginative approach. “She’s really creative with how far she’s willing to go,” M.I.A. told DJ Skee of Los Angeles’ 102.7 KIIS-FM . “I just feel like I get her.” M.I.A. pointed to Minaj’s willingness to put in work as the reason the MC has become an increasingly powerful force in hip-hop. “Nicki Minaj runs hip-hop,” she said. “She works hard, and that’s what it is. She’s focused, and that’s good. She’s got really good work ethic.” M.I.A. is renowned for her unique style, but the singer has mystified some fans with the title of her latest album, ///Y/&#92. The singer acknowledged that the title’s use of computer jargon may have rendered it less Google-friendly, conceding, “because of the ‘forward slash’ ‘backward slash,’ it’s just not findable.” However, she asserts that punching out the moniker of her third studio album is actually very simple. “Everyone’s got those keys. Everyone’s got a ‘forward slash’ and everyone’s got a ‘backward slash.’ It’s actually a lot easier to write, ’cause you go [ typing noise ] ‘Y’ [ typing noise ]. You can write the album name with three keys,” M.I.A. explained. The singer also said she was into the aesthetic appeal of the title. “I like it. I like it when you look on iTunes and you got the album title, and it’s just made up of slashes. It looks good.” Do you see similarities in M.I.A. and Nicki’s styles? Let us know in the comments! Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj Recall Collaborating For ‘Bottoms Up’

The stars chat on Ustream about making the track, promising a video and live performances together soon. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj recently dropped the rollicking, bass-heavy collaboration “Bottoms Up” and the stars wasted no time hitting the web to chat about how the duo hooked up. Hours after sites posted the song from Songz’ upcoming Passion, Pain & Pleasure album, the singer spoke directly to fans on Tuesday from his Ustream page about the track. After conferencing in Minaj, who was at work in the studio, they broke down the whirlwind creation of the song. “I’m in L.A. for BET [Awards] weekend, I’m working on a couple records, and I do this song called ‘Red Lipstick,’ and then I do ‘Bottoms Up’ the next day,” Trey recalled of his recording session. “I hit Nicki and I’m like, ‘Man, I’ve got these two incredible records, I think one of them is gonna be my first single, and I need you to do it. Can you come this weekend? Can you come down?’ “I stayed a couple extra days and she came through,” he said. “Two, three days later I got a verse back that was just stupid.” Songz then addressed the MC directly and said, “I fell in love with you. When I heard the verse, I was like, ‘Oh my s—, I love her. She killed it.’ ” Minaj chimed in and noted that fans had been waiting for the stars to team up. “Every day, people say, ‘When you gonna collaborate with Trey?’ For some strange reason they wanted to see that collaboration,” Minaj said. “So, when you hit me, I was very excited. I just thought, ‘This is our time.’ ” While breaking down her side of the recording process, Minaj revealed that she paid special attention to her verse. “I lived with it,” she explained. “I kept on hitting you like, ‘I’mma have it done today.’ I think I did live with it for, like, three days because I was changing it up, I couldn’t get it. But then, all of a sudden, something just hit me.” Her animated delivery brings boatloads of swagger to the track, but Minaj said she had some doubts at first, admitting that she almost dropped a line where she mimics the loopy, breathy speech of Anna Nicole Smith. “I was gonna take that part out because I was like, ‘Trey is gonna think I’m crazy,’ ” she said. But in the end, Minaj was cool with how the verse came together. “I’m just happy that I was able to do something that kinda kept that energy up,” enthused the MC, who also attributed her juiced-up flow to her rap alter ego, Roman Zolanski. “Roman is very spastic. Roman is crazy and Roman is weird and Roman doesn’t care. … The person on [DJ Khaled’s] ‘All I Do Is Win’ remix, that’s Nicki, and the person on ‘Bottoms Up,’ that’s Roman.” The pair also discussed shooting the song’s accompanying video, for which Songz said he had already drafted a treatment and roped in video director Anthony Mandler. And the duo also chatted about hitting the stage together sometime soon. “I can’t wait ’til the first time we perform it somewhere,” Songz said. “It’s gotta be a big moment,” Minaj insisted. Songz agreed: “Yeah, it’s gonna be a big moment.” What do you think of Trey Songz and Nicki Minaj’s “Bottoms Up”? Share your reviews in the comments.
