Nicki Minaj Says ‘People Need To See’ Her ‘My Time Now’ Documentary

Doc premieres Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Tim Kash Nicki Minaj and Tim Kash Photo: MTV News Hip-hop fans have already seen quite a few sides of Nicki Minaj when it comes to her music, including Roman Zolanski, Barbie and a string of other alter egos. But in “My Time Now,” the documentary on Minaj set to premiere Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, viewers will meet Onika Miraj, the Trinidad-born girl who came Stateside with her parents in search of a better life. “They’re gonna meet Onika,” she told MTV News about the doc. “Everybody sees Nicki Minaj; they’re gonna meet Onika. They’re gonna hear my story, and it’s such an inspirational story, which I never really wanted to tell. ‘Cause everyone always feels like you don’t want people to know too much. But when I saw what [MTV and production company @radical.media] did, I thought, ‘People need to see this.’ It reminds you that everyone always feels like this is it, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like that’s what the doc says at the end.” In the documentary, cameras follow Nicki over three months as she travels back to her native Trinidad for the first time in seven years; records her debut album, Pink Friday ; and purchases a home in New York for her mother. “I am amazed at what I’ve seen in this film,” Minaj said in a statement. ” … This film is my heart & soul. The visual component to Pink Friday. My fans are the most incredible humans on this planet. Words could never translate my gratitude. Thank you for standing by me. It’s our time now.” Members of the hip-hop media have praised “My Time Now” for its candid portrayal of the star. “We often approach female artists with skepticism,” TheBVX.com editor Timmhotep Aku told MTV News. “There’s always been this debate about Nicki within the industry and the general public about how authentic her artistry is. And I think the moment when she’s in the booth, when she’s writing her rhymes, she’s going through her take, kind of speaks to her own authenticity. Nick is really a force to be reckoned with, because she’s not manufactured.” Don’t miss the documentary “Nicki Minaj: My Time Now,” premiering Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! 50 Cent Calls Nicki Minaj ‘An Amazing Talent’

‘She has a lane that’s been closed that she just busted open on her own,’ Fif tells MTV News of Pink Friday MC. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Matt Elias 50 Cent Photo: MTV News With a barrage of features to her name, Nicki Minaj had amassed a legion of fans long before she dropped her debut, Pink Friday, on Monday (November 22). Among those admirers is one of hip-hop’s biggest stars: 50 Cent. When MTV News visited the set of Jeremih’s “Down on Me” video , which features 50, the rapper weighed in on Nicki’s musical appeal and her rap lineage. “She’s the only female around, period,” Fif said. “She has a lane that’s been closed that she just busted open on her own, and she’s an amazing talent. A lot of artists, I personally am not excited by, but her, particularly, she impressed me on that ‘Bottoms Up’ remix,” he added, referring to Trey Songz’s smash, one of a number of memorable Nicki cameos this year. While exhorting the virtues of his fellow Queens native, 50 also pointed out that he “loves” Lil’ Kim, Minaj’s rival . Back in 2003, 50 collaborated with Lil’ Kim on “Magic Stick,” off her La Bella Mafia LP. “Lil’ Kim is dope as well,” Jeremih added. “I think Nicki, it’s not that many female lyricists out that can do what she does. She makes me want to ride to her — you can’t ride to every female rapper. I think she makes it easy for us fellas to ride to. And I think she’s sexy and has a personality like no other.” From the start of Minaj’s meteoric rise, fans and critics, alike, have compared her to Lil’ Kim. But Fif told us he also sees similarities between Nicki and another lady rapper, Foxy Brown. “I understand why people make the comparison between her and Kim, because of the wigs, the hair,” 50 said, drawing laughs from Jeremih. “But I kind of see similarities in her and Foxy’s career. Foxy was in the Firm and down with Jay-Z, the way Nicki was in Young Money, and down with Gucci [Mane]. I see that the same way they kind of came in with the support of two crews, like Foxy did.” Although Foxy has said she applauds Minaj , a recent freestyle by Foxy over dancehall singer Gyptian’s “Hold You” (which Minaj originally blistered), contains what sounds like a thinly veiled shot at the pink-wigged femcee. Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music. Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: 50 Cent And Jeremih Related Artists 50 Cent Nicki Minaj Jeremih

Nicki Minaj Calls Her AMA Dress ‘The Epitome Of Pink Friday’

If her out-there outfit could talk, the Young Money MC tells MTV News it would say, ‘I am such a diva bitch.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Tim Kash Nicki Minaj arrives at the 2010 American Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ AMA2010/ Getty Images The dress Nicki Minaj wore to the 2010 American Music Awards was as manic as the female MC’s music. Nicki Minaj Hints Lil’ Kim Is ‘Roman’s Revenge’ Target

‘My fans know who I’m talking about,’ MC tells Wendy Williams. By Hillary Crosley Nicki Minaj on “The Wendy Williams Show” Photo: FOX Nicki Minaj stopped by “The Wendy Williams Show” on Wednesday (November 17) to talk about her debut LP Pink Friday , but ultimately hinted at the target of the song “Roman’s Revenge.” “When you put out records, only the guilty ones feel like you’re talking about them,” Minaj said. “If you have nothing to worry about, if you never came out saying stuff, if you never came out saying your ungrateful bullsh–, then you wouldn’t worry about it.” On “Roman’s Revenge,” featuring a rowdy verse from Eminem as Slim Shady, Nicki embodies her Brit character, Roman Zolanski. “Word that bitch mad ’cause I took the spot/ Well, bitch, if you ain’t sh—ing, then get off the pot/ Got some n—az out in Brooklyn that’ll off your top,” Minaj rhymes on the track. Many hip-hop fans assumed Barbie was talking about Lil’ Kim , even the Brooklyn MC herself. While Nicki initially said that she was “talking about everyone who has been in interviews talking,” her chat with Williams hinted that she was aiming for a certain Queen Bee. Still, Nick seemed like she was tired of the topic. “I don’t get into that. … I feel like my music, my fans know everything that’s going on,” she told the talk-show host. “Every time I talk, every time I spit raps, my fans know who I’m talking about, what I’m talking about. I don’t have to sit up here and detail it. No. For what?” Also during the interview, Nicki got personal, admitting that her father burned down her family’s house when she was a child. “He did burn the house down. … And my mother was in the house, and she had to run out the last minute,” Nicki revealed. “But she had a dream the night before that the house was gonna be burned down, so me and my brother weren’t in the house. She had us sleep at a friend’s house. At like 3:00 that morning, they were like, ‘You gotta go down to your house, ’cause something’s happening.’ We were young, so … we ran four or five blocks, and we just saw smoke.” Nicki also added that her parents are still together, before acknowledging that her crazy characters evolved naturally. “When I first started rapping, I felt like I had to be someone,” she admitted. “Everybody was telling me, ‘Be this way. You’re from Queens, be hard.’ But, that wasn’t really me, that’s not who I wanted to be. When I changed the people who were around me, I just started being free, and I was like, you know what, I’ve always been animated, I’ve always been crazy.” Did you see Nicki’s interview on “The Wendy Williams Show”? Young Money’s Shanell Says Street Single Is For ‘Boss’ Chicks

‘The way I write my love songs comes out different,’ R&B upstart says of penning Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Cupid’s Got a Gun.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Shanell Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images Young Money’s Shanell has a voice as sweet as Red Velvet cake, but the singer/songwriter isn’t your average R&B pop tart. On her new single “Cupid’s Got a Gun” featuring Nicki Minaj, she’s as sharp with her lyrics as her boss Lil Wayne is with his rhymes. Shanell says the song represents the “tough skin” type of girls. “Me and my homegirl Mika Means were actually in the studio and we were coming up with stuff and we started that song, “Cupid’s Got a Gun,” Shanell told MTV News this week. “It’s a love song, but it’s a love song told in a different way. I’m not really a mushy person, so I express my emotions, it’s like, instead of saying I love you, it’s I f—ing love you. So the way I write my love songs comes out different. And it’s this energy that I felt that it needed, ’cause I consider myself a boss type of chick and I got a tough skin. I thought Nicki would be perfect to be on this record to exemplify that boss type of energy. I played it for her and she jumped right on it.” The song is the first effort from her forthcoming debut album. According to Shanell, “Cupid’s Got a Gun” wasn’t slated to be the first single but after it leaked to the Web earlier this month it drew a strong response. As a result, she and her team are prepping to work the song as a street single to tease the upcoming LP. She hopes to drop that full-length for the masses next summer. Meanwhile, she has her hand in other projects like her gig as the face clothing line Married to the Mob’s fall collection. The singer has also written a video treatment for “Cupid’s” that she described as a combination of “Smooth Criminal” and the movies “Sin City” and “Kill Bill.” “As a writer, there’s a picture in my head and I’m basically writing a story to the pictures that flash in my head,” Shanell explained. “So I always had the visual for the video in my head. But once we got Nicki on it, I thought, Oh, [those three as a mix would work]. I’ve written it out and I’m looking for a director now.” Are you looking forward to seeing the collaboration from Young Money’s first ladies? Tell us in the comments! Nicki Minaj Calls VMA Pre-Show Set ‘An Amazing Look’

‘As an underground female rapper, that’s the biggest accomplishment so far,’ she tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Tim Kash Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News People are still talking about Nicki Minaj’s colorful performance at the VMA pre-show with special guest Will.I.Am, and she recognizes what a big milestone it was in her young career. “That was an amazing look,” Nicki told MTV News right after the main show Sunday night. “I’m so thankful to have that opportunity. As an underground female rapper, that’s the biggest accomplishment so far.” Nicki also threw kudos to her Young Money family member (and Twitter ex-husband ) Drake. “Our divorce isn’t finalized yet,” Nicki joked before assessing Drake’s performance of “Fancy” with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. “No, he was amazing. He’s always spot-on. I thought Mary sounded like honey. Honey! Amazing. And, of course, my baby Swizz Beatz was up there. I loved it.” The day after the show, Nicki was back in her hometown of New York performing as part of the Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home concert series . Minaj came out with Jiggaman and Kanye West for “Monster.” “I’ve just been blessed to be on a song with two living legends,” Nicki told DJ Drama recently on his Gangsta Grillz radio program. “In my book, Jay and Kanye are icons, and I never in a billion years would have thought I would be on a song with one of them, let alone both of them. I’m happy people think I murdered the record. It just feels exciting to be a part of that collab. Seriously.” Minaj’s VMA pre-show performance won over some new fans as well as her peers. “I think Nicki Minaj is the truth,” Katy Perry said of Minaj . “I think she is amazing, and I love her sense of style. I love her beautiful figure. It’s hot.” “What I love about Nicki is she has the eye of the tiger and she is fearless,” Minaj choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson said. “These are the components that I saw about three years ago in Lady Gaga. Nicki Minaj Makes Colorful Entrance On VMA Pre-Show

Spacesuit-clad Young Money honey performs ‘Your Love,’ ‘Check It Out’ with will.i.am in solo TV debut. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj performs during the 2010 VMA pre-show Photo: MTV News When you’re making a live solo performance debut on TV, you have to make it count. And Young Money honey Nicki Minaj is not one to pull up short . Which explains why she poured herself into a pink-and-purple spacesuit topped by a cotton candy-colored wig for the MTV VMA pre-show run of her new single, “Check it Out.” Accompanied by two dancers in matching outfits, Nicki stood stock still like a futuristic superhero for the song’s intro, then began to wiggle her world-famous hips over the song’s sample of the iconic MTV launch-pad tune “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Tossing in some high kicks and plenty of looks at her ample assets, Minaj held onto a railing ringing the stage and shook it slow as guest will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas strutted out to drop his verse. Dressed like a bondage cartoon character from the phantom zone, Will kicked it in a skin-hugging black leather suit with a Devo-like plastic high-top fade and white shades, pulsing back and forth alongside Minaj as the crowd shouted out their approval. “Dummies can’t touch me ’cause I’m floatin’ sky-high,” he rapped, as Nicki wore a sneer on her face and dropped into a double-time island patois with her hand on her hips. “The DunDun/ Yep, in London,” she rapped, shaking her head. “Competition/ Why yes I would love some.” But by the time she ended with a grimace frozen on her face, it was clear that Minaj had blown away any and all comers and set the stage for the night of unforgettable performances to come. Nicki Minaj Calls VMA Appearance ‘Pinnacle Of My Career’

‘I just feel like, this is my coming-out party,’ the Best New Artist nominee and pre-show performer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV Very few newcomers have had as a grand of a debut as Nicki Minaj. VMA night is shaping up to be a major event for the Young Money diva who will not only contend with chart-toppers like Justin Bieber and Ke$ha for a Moonman, but also hit the stage at the pre-show . This is major,” Minaj said on the set of the promo shoot for the big night. The femcee, who appears in the clip in the style of a hip-hop Bond girl, commands a motorcycle in an ultra-snug catsuit. She added that filming the VMA visual is a bit more involved than shooting the music videos to her hit collabos and solo smashes. “This thing today has been like shooting a movie,” Minaj observed. “It’s very specific. When I shoot videos it’s just about performing and doing whatever you want. But with this it’s more like, ‘No, this is the shot we need so we have to … get that shot.’ ” Ultimately, Minaj was down to be detail-oriented for the shoot and said that being involved in the VMAs is an honor for any up-and-comer. “This is something that everybody dreams of being a part of … and I am no exception to that rule,” Minaj said. “I just feel like, this is my coming-out party.
