Drake Calls Nicki Minaj’s Breakout Year ‘Incredible’

‘It’s amazing now to see her come into her own,’ he tells MTV News on set of ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News The Young Money triumvirate of Lil Wayne , Drake and Nicki Minaj had a banner year filled with successful albums, buzzed about moments onstage and chart-toppers. Drake compared the success of his and Minaj’s debuts with Weezy’s opening-week sales of Tha Carter III , saying each subsequent project further cemented the collective’s status. “I think it’s crazy that somehow, some higher power brought all these individuals together,” Drake told MTV News on the set of Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” video. “I remember being on the [tour] bus when Wayne played me Tha Carter III , which went on to sell a million copies in one week. Then it was Thank Me Later . It was this big pressure, and that went on to sell what it did. “And now,” he continued, “to think of the girl that I used to ride the bus with — and that’s what she was to me: this girl that I rode the bus with. I was like, ‘Female rap?’ And I’m being dead honest with you. [I thought,] ‘Man, it’s been a while since there’s been a female rapper, and I’m curious to see how this works.’ “It’s not that I didn’t believe,” he added. “And she was probably looking at me like, ‘This Jew from Canada: I don’t know.’ ” And now, after the successful debut of Minaj’s Pink Friday , the Toronto lyricist said he couldn’t be happier for the “Right Thru Me” star. “It’s amazing now to see her come into her own, build this brand and persona,” he said. “It’s incredible.” Were you a Young Money fan this year? Nicki Minaj Sex Tape: In Existence?

I made a conscious decision to try to tone down the sexiness, I want people, especially young girls, to know that in life, nothing is going to be based on sex appeal. You’ve got to have something else to go with that. Might these words prove ironic for Nicki Minaj? The rapper is the latest celebrity at the center of a sex tape scandal, as The Boom Box claims the video was filmed prior to Minaj hitting it big and that it’s being hawked for $100,000. No words yet out of the rapper’s camp. Earlier this week, word spread of a Demi Lovato sex tape, but that was quickly shot down by the singer’s rep. We’ll keep you apprised of any reaction, or videotaped pounding, from Nicki.

T.I. Says Pharrell Asked Him To Vent On ‘Get Back Up’

‘I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record,’ Tip recalls the producer telling him. By Hillary Crosley T.I. Photo: MTV News It’s no secret that T.I. is experiencing a difficult time in his career. The Atlanta rapper was on the cusp of releasing his comeback album, then titled King Uncaged, following a one-year prison stint when he was arrested once again. Tip was sentenced to 11 months for violating his parole and shipped back to the same Arkansas facility he’d just left. But through it all, the MC found inspiration for the track “Get Back Up” from his now-titled No Mercy album. “Yeah, ‘Get Back Up,’ produced by Pharrell of the Neptunes, one of the most passionate, genuine, artistic guys that I’ve met in the game and has had a hand in my movement since my very first album,” T.I. said. “He was one of the first big producers to work with me.” Tip said the pair reconnected and were recording for his then-forthcoming seventh LP when disaster struck. “Prior to my arrest, we had done about three or four songs, considerably hot records, some of which you’ll definitely be hearing on this project,” T.I. said during our exclusive “RapFix Live” interview . “But … I left out the studio, and the next day, I go to jail, or I get arrested, which took me in a whole ‘nother, different direction. “When all of these things started coming to pass, Pharrell called me like, ‘Hey, man, somebody somewhere is trying to tell you something,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know, that may be,’ ” the MC continued. “Then we had a conversation at length about how I felt about the media’s portrayal of my circumstances. And he said, ‘You know what? That’s what you need to say in a song.’ And I say, ‘Man, I ain’t talking about no music right now, P.’ And he say, ‘But that’s what they wanna hear, that’s what you need to tell ’em. Just ride with me on this. I’mma get it to you, and I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record.’ I said, ‘All right, man, give it to me.’ ” It didn’t take the talented producer long to craft a beat perfect for Tip’s emotions. “So it might’ve been a week or two later, he called me and it might’ve been at 4 o’clock in the morning, like, ‘I got it!’ ” T.I. recalled. “I immediately heard the potential, I immediately heard that this was a special record, a personal record, a statement record … and one that could be delivered with humility and not as defensive as it may sound in conversation if I said it.” What do you think of “Get Back Up”? Nicki Minaj, Drake Set To Shoot ‘Moment 4 Life’ Video

Young Money president Mack Maine tells MTV News clique aims to film clip for Pink Friday track in December. By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj recently experienced something few new artists can claim: seeing your debut earn the #2 spot on the Billboard albums chart. The Queens native’s Pink Friday LP sold a little more than 375,000 copies in its first week of release, falling just behind Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Now the MC is prepping the video for Friday ‘s “Moment 4 Life,” which features Young Money labelmate Drake. “She’s shooting hopefully on December 20,” Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News. “We’re still trying to work out the date for the next video with [Nicki] and Drake for the ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. That’s the next project.” We also spoke to the Young Money head about Nicki’s success and what it has meant to the Miami-by-way-of-New Orleans clan. “It was [a special moment], especially with her being a female in this day and time too,” Maine said. “Also, people don’t know that I was a big factor in making sure that Nicki got signed with us and also just sticking with her through ups and downs. “Just to see her go from a seed being planted to a … forest, just a beautiful flawless forest … the world recognizes. Big ups to Nicki, she worked hard,” he continued. “She represents the female gender, and she basically delivered. There were a lot of odds against her and she defeated all of that and, for her to deliver like that, I gotta say congratulations.” True to form, when news of her sales reached the animated MC , she was overcome, Maine recalled. “She was excited. We talked about it and her emotion was crazy,” Maine said. “She basically shed tears, tears of joy. I have to congratulate her and say thank you to all of the fans that supported — without them we wouldn’t be anything. … She wouldn’t be anything.” Are you excited that “Moment 4 Life” is Nicki’s next single? Heart, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Rock ‘VH1 Divas’

Acclaimed duo team up with newcomers for ‘Crazy on You.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Grace Potter Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Decades of rocking out have not faded Heart’s spark. The duo shut things down at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” when they played their breakout 1976 single “Crazy on You.” This time, the ladies got some back up from relative newbies Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, with Potter splitting vocal duties with Heart frontwoman Ann Wilson. Nancy Wilson kicked off the set with a nimble solo that scored excited cheers from the soldiers. The screams reached a fever pitch when the bass line from “Crazy” rattled in the speakers, and the service members went wild. Sporting a long dark coat with a generous silver pendant dangling from her neck, Ann helmed the first verse before strutting down the runway to the center of the crowd for the chorus. Potter, who was manning the keys, chimed in for the second verse, later picking up her mic and meeting Ann in the middle of the stage. Although she wasn’t center stage, Nancy still commanded attention, leaping in the air as she clutched her guitar. Potter and Ann closed out the performance by belting the last notes in unison. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops” .) Potter and crew also got a chance to run the stage solo. After an introduction from “Jersey Shore” residents Snooki and The Situation , the band cranked out their heady single “Paris (Ooh La La).” Despite her shimmery cocktail dress, Potter looked every bit the vintage rock bad girl, strumming her guitar, whipping her hair and wailing like she’s been at this since forever. The bassist and another guitarist plucked fiery solos, and Potter finished the song at the edge of stage, belting directly to the enthused service members. After a few final whips of her mane, Potter wrapped up the song with a sultry grin and strutted back toward her band. The ladies added some rock-and-roll flair to a night packed with pop hitmakers like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson. Nicki Minaj Says She’s Euphoric Over Pink Friday Sales

‘I feel this weird calm feeling,’ the ‘Right Thru Me’ MC tells MTV News after #2 chart debut. By Jayson Rodriguez Nicki Minaj Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images After all of the frenzy leading up Nicki Minaj’s full-length release, the much-anticipated debut landed a plum #2 spot on the Billboard albums chart. So how does she feel now? “I feel this weird calm feeling,” the Queens lyricist told MTV News by phone on Wednesday (December 1). The rapper moved 375,000 copies of Pink Friday — bested only by the 496,000 copies Kanye West’s My Dark Beautiful Twisted Fantasy sold — making her the first female MC in more than a decade to debut with that kind of tally. (Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill sold 423,000 in its first week.) “I’m just so grateful and kind of still in shock. These numbers haven’t been put up since 1998,” she continued, referring to Hill’s debut. It just makes me feel proud of my team, proud of my fans, everyone who has had something to do with my dreams. Finally, we are seeing this dream come to fruition. It feels incredible.” Off the strength of her rapidly growing fanbase of Barbies and Ken Barbs, Minaj earned a larger first-week sales mark than recent projects by notable stars like Rihanna and Ne-Yo. Kanye West Tops Billboard Chart With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Nicki Minaj a strong #2 with her debut, Pink Friday. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images It’s an understatement to say that Kanye West is on a roll. As predicted, ‘Ye’s fifth album, the hotly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , will easily top the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, after selling a robust 496,000 copies, giving the Chicago MC his fourth #1 debut in a row. Just behind him at #2 is the debut from Young Money First Lady Nicki Minaj , who moved 375,000 copies of her Pink Friday . The pair of rap superstars lead a parade of new faces in the top 10 during the biggest week of new album releases of the year, which helped propel the top 11 discs past the six-figure mark. After nearly two years of mixtapes and guest spots on other artists’ songs for Minaj and months of leaking tracks by West, the two friendly rivals prove that the traditional way of setting up albums may officially be a thing of the past. In fact, Minaj’s total is one of the highest ever for a female MC’s debut, falling just short of the 423,000 copies former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill scored in 1998 with her smash The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Justin Bieber ‘s Walmart-exclusive acoustic disc, My Worlds Acoustic, comes in at #7 on sales of 115,000, with My Chemical Romance just behind at #8 (112,000) with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Also breaking into the top 10 is Ne-Yo , whose Libra Scale hit #9, as the in-demand singer/songwriter sold just a shade under MCR. The rest of the top 10 features Susan Boyle at #3 with The Gift (263,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Speak Now, which moves up five spots to #4 as sales picked up by 64 percent after five weeks in stores to 241,000, putting her within spitting distance of 2 million albums sold. Jackie Evancho ‘s O Holy Night EP falls a few spots to #5 (142,000), while Rihanna slips three to #6 with her latest, Loud (141,000), and the cast of “Glee” round out the top 10 with their first Christmas collection (108,000). Kid Rock ‘s time in the top 10 was brief, as his classic-rock-influenced Born Free falls six spots to #11 in week two on sales of 104,000, mirroring the tumble by popera singer Josh Groban , who slips eight slots to #12 in the second week for his latest, Illuminations (99,000). Despite a digital hit with “We R Who We R,” Ke$ha ‘s second album of 2010, Cannibal, has a modest debut, landing at #15 (74,000), even as fellow pop provocateur Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream shoots up 18 slots to #16 (72,000) as sales increased by nearly 180 percent from the previous week. The soundtrack to the Christina Aguilera/Cher movie “Burlesque” matches the so-so box-office returns of that hoofing drama, with a soft debut at #18 (63,000), and G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks has to settle for a #26 bow (44,000) for his H.F.M.2 (Hunger for More 2). It was also not stellar news for a pair of greatest-hits collections, as Pink ‘s Greatest Hits So Far! drops 14 spots to #29 in its second week (41,000), and Jay-Z ‘s Hits Collection sneaks into the top 50 at #43 (28,000) in its chart debut. Things are also looking grim for season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze after his major-label debut, Live It Up, craters in its second week, nose-diving 74 slots to #93 as sales trailed off by 63 percent. DeWyze scored the worst-selling debut figures ever by an “Idol” winner last week. Over on the iTunes albums chart, it was mostly the same story, as Kanye took the #1 spot, followed by Nicki, the “Burlesque” soundtrack, the “Glee” Christmas album, Ke$ha, Rihanna, MCR, Swift, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More and Kings of Leon’s Come Around Sundown. Perry still ruled on the iTunes single tally with her latest single, “Firework,” with Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” just behind, Ke$ha holding at #3 with “We R” and the Black Eyed Peas hitting #4 with “The Time (Dirty Bit).” iTunes doesn’t provide detailed sales results, but Rihanna was probably happy with locking down #5 with “What’s My Name?” and #7 with “Only Girl (in the World),” with Bruno Mars slipping in at #6 with “Grenade.” Rounding out the top 10 was Mars again at #8 with “Just the Way You Are,” Far East Movement with “Like a G6” and Trey Songz with “Bottoms Up.” The battle for the top will start all over again next week with the arrival of the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The Beginning , as well as new albums from Chrisette Michele , Jazmine Sullivan , Tim McGraw and Flo Rida , as well as yet another “Glee” cast disc. Kanye West Bests Nicki Minaj In Billboard Battle

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold nearly half a million in first week. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images In the end, the chart battle between Kanye West and Nicki Minaj wasn’t much of a contest. In the biggest album release week of the year, Yeezy easily bested the Young Money honey. Preliminary figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan peg his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy debuting with more than 495,000 copies sold compared to 375,000 for Minaj’s long-awaited major-label debut, Pink Friday. Though some questioned Kanye’s decision to leak a song a week in the months leading up to the release of Fantasy, including nearly all of the album’s major tracks, in the end, fans still appear to have come out for the rapper’s fifth studio album. Fantasy matched the #1 debut of Kanye’s previous effort, 2008’s vocal-heavy 808s & Heartbreak, which moved 450,000 copies in its first week. Neither, however, come close to reaching the MC’s chart peak, which he achieved in 2007 with Graduation , which also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart after selling a whopping 957,000 copies in its first week in the midst of a much-hyped chart battle with 50 Cent’s album Curtis . After more than two years of headline-grabbing guest spots on tracks by everyone from Gucci Mane to Mariah Carey, Trey Songz, Bobby Valentino, Mya, Robin Thicke, Ludacris and, of course, Kanye, anticipation was high for Minaj’s Friday . In the end, Minaj just narrowly missed the record for the best debut album sales by a female rapper, falling a bit short of the mark set by former Fugees member Lauryn Hill in 1998 with her smash hit The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which moved 423,000 copies in its chart bow. Suck It, Kanye: David Lynch Breaks Off Fall’s Best Pop Single

Bludgeoned from all sides by hype (Nicki Minaj), hubris (Kanye West), cosmetically enhanced treacle (Katy Perry) and/or some unholy hybrid of all three ( Glee ), I can’t really overstate the palliative rush to be had from David Lynch’s swell new electro-pop single “Good Day Today.” Yes — that David Lynch. And yes — it lives up to its name.
