Katy Perry, Adele To Continue Ladies’ VMA Hot Streak?

Video of the Year Moonman has gone to a woman every year since the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Past Video of the Year winners meet 2011 Video of the Year nominees Photo: Getty Images/ Columbia/ Capitol/ MTV News Every year since 2007, a woman has taken home the Video of the Year Moonman at the MTV Video Music Awards . The ladies really have become the undeniable stars of the category. So, who has won the prize the past four VMAs? In 2007, Rihanna (featuring Jay-Z) won it for “Umbrella.” A year later, in 2008, Britney Spears dominated with “Piece of Me.” Beyonc&#233 took it in 2009 for her anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” and Lady Gaga (and her meat dress) won it last year, 2010, for her “Bad Romance” video. Sunday night, will a woman once again take home the ultimate Moonman for Video of the Year? Well, there’s a 40 percent chance, mathematically, that a female artist will win the prize. Two of the five nominees are women: Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”) and Katy Perry (“Firework”) face off against the Beastie Boys, Bruno Mars and Tyler, the Creator. Will the ladies cancel each other out, or will one of them rise victorious? “I think it has to be a lady this year, as in my mind, it’s a two-person race between Katy Perry and Adele ,” Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson told MTV News. “The former because it seems like an appropriate culmination to an unprecedented chart-ruling year, and the latter because it’s a feel-good story of quality and skill triumphing over glitz and artificiality.” While Anderson notes it could go either way regarding Adele and Perry, celeb blogger Perez Hilton had a more definite idea who will win. “The women continue their hot streak. Without a doubt, the winner is going to be Adele,” he predicted. “This is her year. She’s been the critical darling and has also been embraced by the masses in a way we haven’t seen in a really long time. She’s actually selling albums, week after week, and lots of them. She deserves to win every single award she’s nominated for.” Anderson added that the performances scheduled for the night are a major indication that a lady will win. “Either way, it’s going to be five straight victories for XX chromosomes,” he predicted. “And it should also be noted that considering the biggest performers will also be female — Adele, Lady Gaga, Beyonc

Lady Gaga: Best New Artist VMA ‘Changed My Life’

‘I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,’ she tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga accepts the Best New Artist award at the 2009 Video Music Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images The 2009 Video Music Awards belonged to Lady Gaga . She stunned us on the red carpet, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier gown with Kermit the Frog on her arm, and shocked us onstage with her blood-soaked performance of “Paparazzi.” In 2010 , Gaga returned to the VMAs and made everyone’s jaws drop again when she hit the stage in her infamous meat dress . Yet, out of all of her iconic VMA moments, there is one that really stood out for Mother Monster: her win for Best New Artist. “I will always remember Best New Artist,” Gaga told MTV News. “I just remember that I won and I was surprised and I was really taken aback.” Eminem presented Gaga with the award that night, and she is still a bit embarrassed about asking him to hold her newly acquired award as she peeled off her face-covering red-lace crown to thank her Little Monsters face-to-face. “I remember I asked Eminem to hold my Moonman,” Gaga recalled. “And than he sort of looked at me like, ‘Are you f—ing kidding me?’ But he’s really cool, so it was fine.” We can’t say that we blame her for what she did, since she said there were a million different things running through her mind when they announced that she was the big winner. “It was a super surreal moment, where you have to think very quickly,” Gaga said of accepting her Moonman. “You can’t hear yourself, because they are screaming so loud, and you don’t have an in-ear [monitor] and you’ve got a microphone and you’ve got to get everything out, and I just remember I said, ‘To God and the gays,’ and I remember when I was done, I thought that was the right thing to say.” But we weren’t just transfixed by what Gaga was saying; we also couldn’t take our eyes off of what she was wearing. Gaga hit the stage in an Alexander McQueen dress, complete with a crown and her face covered with red lace. What the viewers didn’t know is that Gaga never planned to show her face during her acceptance speech. “I think I had been told and asked profusely by my label to take it off if I won,” Gaga said of removing the mask. “I was like, ‘I’m not breaking the fourth wall of this performance.’ I gave them this whole sassy answer. Then I got up there, I just got so overwhelmed, and I ripped it off, and I’ll never forget that moment. The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Ludacris And ‘Scarface’ Star Talk Hip-Hop Influence

‘We were all living vicariously through your characters,’ Luda gushes to actor Steven Bauer as Mixtape Daily looks on. By Rob Markman Ludacris and Steven Bauer Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Ludacris There is no shortage of “Scarface” references in hip-hop. From Brad Jordan ‘s rap moniker to the intro on Jay-Z’s now-classic debut, Reasonable Doubt, rappers have been putting their love for the 1983 film on full display since its release, and the movie’s actors have taken notice. Tony Montana himself, the legendary Al Pacino , expressed his appreciation for the hip-hop community on Tuesday night, right before a Los Angeles party in celebration of the upcoming Blu-ray release of the movie. “They really get it and they understand it, and that’s a great thing. They’ve been very supportive all these years. I think they’ve helped us tremendously,” Pacino told MTV News. And Pacino isn’t alone, as his co-star Steven Bauer, who played Montana’s best friend Manny “Manolo” Ribera, crashed MTV News’ red carpet interview with Ludacris just to introduce himself and show love to the rapper. “You know what? You’re responsible. You and everybody that came before you brought ‘Scarface’ to [the] mainstream,” Bauer told Luda after exchanging pleasantries. “We were dead in the water, we were forgotten and we were lepers.” The film was panned by critics after its theatrical release and the over-the-top violence proved to be too much for mainstream America at the time. But “Scarface” eventually became a cult-classic, and the rap community had a lot to do with it. “We were all living vicariously through your characters,” ‘Cris told Bauer of the flick’s hip-hop appeal. “As the whole rap community, we definitely support.” There was clearly mutual admiration between Luda and Bauer, as the veteran actor jokingly told the MC that he had “ho’s in different area codes,” making a reference to Luda’s 2001 hit single. After the exchange, Luda gushed about his favorite “Scarface” scene. “Say hello to my little friend,” he said, referencing the climactic death scene where Montana’s home is invaded by rival drug lord Alejandro Sosa’s assassins. “That is definitely my best line and best part of the movie, because he just went out in a blaze of glory, man. If you gonna go out, that’s how you go out.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Ludacris

UFO Cult Declares National Topless Day [PICS, VIDEO]

Well beam me up, Scotty, because I’m totally flying saucer-eyed right now! Thank you, thank you, we’ll be here all week. OK, let’s back up for a minute. National Topless Day is the brainchild of Rael, a former journalist and racecar driver who says aliens apeared to him on a hilltop on France in 1974 and told him that all life on Earth was created by extraterrestrials. Rael also claims the aliens told him that it was his divine mission to fight injustice- specifically, the skin justice of men being allowed to doff their tops in public while women’s watermelons must remain covered. Whatever you say, fella. In 2007, the space cult leader started www.go-topless.org, a site dedicated to rallying womankind to “FREE YOUR BREASTS! FREE YOUR MIND!” And believe it or not, there are women who have joined the cause, organizing topless protests and petitioning lawmakers to change the laws and make their states and cities officially “Top Free” (they’ve already succeeded in converting Columbus, Ohio, Portland, Oregon, Washington, DC and Austin, Texas, among other cities). They’re planning a “Historical Boob March” (their words, not ours) on Washington on August 26, 2012, but in the meantime topless advocates must content themselves with marching in boob-friendly locales each year on National Topless Day. (In uh, “top slave” locales like Los Angeles, protestors glue fake nipples over their own in order to prove a point. The point being that they also saw The Change-Up ). This past Sunday the Raelians and their compatriots gathered to celebrate their annual festival of funbags, and you bet there were photographers there to document the liberated love muffins. See the pics after the jump!

WTF? Vogue Italia Runs Feature On “Slave Earrings”

Read the original post:

Vogue Italia’s recent “slave earrings” fashion feature has made heads turn. The same magazine that debuted it’s all-black model issue three years ago has just taken several steps way back. Oh, tell me fashion bible, what exactly is a slave earring? Are there ships and sickles involved? No? Then how can, as you’ve written, a “circular shape” recall the greatest violation of human rights in history? Yup, that’s right folks. Vogue Italia seems to believe hoop earrings are so vintage, they’re “slave”-like. Simple, oversized hoop earrings. The ones all kinds of women wear. But, at 70 words long, let’s just assume this article is void of research. And to make matters worse, as if they anticipated the backlash, Vogue included a disclaimer in the article, giving reason to why us readers would be so wrong if we, ya know, actually thought that by “slave”…they meant “slave.” They wrote: ”If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern Unites States during the late 18th century” – it does -”[then] the latest interpretation is pure freedom.” Riiight. Freedom. From an earring. Shut up, Vogue, you’re not chronicling a women’s movement. Backpedaling as best they could, Vogue has since changed the title to “Ethnic Earrings” because it seems they believe those words to be synonymous, which is even more sad. The Universal Lesson of Russell Armstrong’s Suicide

I don’t know Russell Armstrong or anything about him except what I’ve read about the estranged spouse of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Taylor Armstrong.  I do know something about suicide, however. I know it doesn’t have to be the fate of everyone who contemplates it. The core reason for suicide is the deep sense that either the world or I myself has not lived up to my expectations – and isn’t about to. The emotional response to this belief is despair and depression of such depth and intensity that it overrides one’s natural fear of death. The core reason for anyone reaching this conclusion is that the world is a very difficult place. I believe that we all come in from a realm that feels beautifully connected and safe and, in any hierarchal culture, we find ourselves in an alternative realm where most people are very well trained in how to create disconnect with others.  Notably, this includes our parents, because in part that’s how they have been trained.  (Fortunately, on a sliding scale of success, parents and the community also reinforce our natural connecting/loving abilities – and so we end up split: each of us with a Jekyll loving side of ourselves along with a Hyde darkness.) As I describe in the  Free Download  life mastery class on my life coaching website, it’s also a savagely judgmental world we enter. This  is extremely hard on all of us – and yet so innate in our development that it puts us all on guard. It is, of course, the exact opposite experience of safe connection.    Our basic childhood responses for dealing with this world are the six coping mechanisms   I mentioned in my earlier blog . These are: fight, flight, seek approval, control, manipulate, or sacrifice yourself to “fix” or enable someone else. They don’t solve the underlying issues – in fact they make them worse – but they are survival mechanisms in the moment.  Beyond learning to rely on such inadequate life and relating tools, is the fact that psychologically as children we develop a self-image of who we want to be. If the world later supports that self-image, we tend to be at least okay, if not happy and satisfied. If it doesn’t, watch out! The awful truth about any self-image, however, is that it is an image. It is not our authentic self, though it may include elements of authenticity, such as our native talents and aptitudes. And a good rule of thumb is: t he more distant you are from your authentic self, the closer you are to suicide. For some of us, when our coping mechanisms no longer work to keep us from despair over how the world or ourselves have not met our expectations, including the expectations that come with our self-image, we might as well say goodbye to this world. The pain is just too deep to stay here. Now, here’s a story. Some years ago I met a young woman, 23, who was one of the most remarkable, loving, compassionate people I’d encountered. She lighted up a room with her essence and was literally incapable of forming a negative judgment on another person. I suggested to her that she must have had extraordinary and loving parenting.  And she said no, she had not, and in fact she had been suicidal a year and a half earlier and had failed in a serious attempt to kill herself. What healed her despair, she said, was a simple mental/emotional technique she learned at a free evening workshop a friend insisted she attend. Not having anything to do – her father was at this point paying her rent – she spent all day every day using this technique, one that deals with negative thoughts and emotions. A year later she was in the remarkable shape in which I met her. Moreover, her mind had become completely quiet- it didn’t chatter away all day long the way most of ours do. The technique was called Heartmath, and it is one of the modern tools life coaches like myself teach to help people with their emotional pain and negative mindsets. There are numerous others we teach as we coach people toward success in life and their careers, as no one technique works on everyone and it is best to offer a smorgasbord of tools. Russell Armstrong obviously either was not taught such skills or lacked an ally to help him find the will to use them, another job of life coaches and the therapists with whom we work in suicide-potential cases. The great thing about these tools is you don’t have to be suicidal to work with them. You only need a desire to move past whatever pain you might be in from some area of your life where you believe your expectations have not been met.    *** J ay Levin, the founder and former Editor-in Chief of the LA Weekly newspaper, has been a highly successful life and relationship coach and trainer for 12 years.  He recently made the core of his work available as classes in Life Rehab and Mastery and in Relationships. Kimmy Cakes Big Day: No Cellphones Allowed, Metal Detectors And Exclusive Photos To Sell For $1.5 Milli

Kimmy Cakes is set to wed Kris Humphries today and we couldn’t care less be more thrilled. Tents have been erected and preparation is well underway for the event which will be held at 6pm at a Montecito estate. We already know this will be the wedding of every woman’s dreams (except the groom SMH) especially because instead of paying thousands of dollars, Kim will be making lots of money from her wedding, between the sales of the photos and the money E! is giving her to film. According to TMZ reports : People magazine won the bidding war for exclusive wedding day photos, says The Hollywood Reporter, to the tune of $1.5 MILLION. The trade says Kim and hubby-to-be Kris Humphries also raked in $300,000 for the engagement announcement back in May and $100,000 from OK! mag for bridal shower pics. While People Magazine has dibs on the photos, you already know the E! network is going to be filming everything, and to prevent photos and footage from getting out we hear Kimmy Cakes is going to extreme measures to keep it all under wraps: A source tells Us Weekly that no one is allowed to have cell phones, and there will be “metal detectors and body scanners” to make sure the rules are followed! Kim doesn’t want anyone seeing that dress before she’s ready! Speaking of the dress, Vera Wang reportedly designed three different gowns for Kim and doesn’t even know which she’s picked yet, but Kim has been talking a little about her inspiration for the design, crediting her childhood friend Nicole Richie for influencing her decision: “I had this one vision of what I wanted this dress to look like,” Kim told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS radio show, “Nicole Richie called me and said, “Oh my god, I have this vision for your gown. Just hear me out! I think you should go super classic, really old Hollywood! You can’t go with something trendy, you can’t show off too much”. “So she came over and was drawing out all these [dresses]. It completely changed what I thought I was going with. It’s timeless.” She went on to say she changed her mind several times during the wedding design process. Must be nice… Do you think Kimmy Cakes is a Bridezilla??? Keep reading for Kris Jenner and Khloe’s special messages to Kim on her big day.

Janet Jackson Says Kevin Garnett Was Tryin’ To Smash Back In The Day… Talks Nicki Minaj Wardrobe Malfunction

Damn… KG couldn’t get no love and JD got to hit that? Janet Jackson is making her way to Minneapolis Friday as part of her “No. Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour” (her first tour since Michael’s death) and the singer spoke candidly with their local Star Tribune about a plethora of interesting topics, including how former Minnesota Timberwolves player Kevin Garnett tried to get a piece and her thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s recent “wardrobe malfunction.” Check out the excerpts below: Janet Jackson knows her way around the Twin Cities, since she recorded most of her hits here with producer/songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. However, she hasn’t been here lately; Jam and Lewis moved to Los Angeles several years ago and she hasn’t worked with them since her “20 Y.O.” album in 2006. Jackson, 45, agreed to answer some questions via email. Her answers were short and sweet, punctuated with emoticons. She didn’t give direct or in-depth responses about such controversies as her lip-syncing in concert and her infamous 2004 Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction but she did address them. Q: What will it be like to perform all your hits in Minneapolis, where so many were written and recorded? A: It is going to be fun for me! I can’t wait to get back to Minneapolis and see all my fans there. Q: What’s your favorite memory of Minneapolis? A: I have so many, but being in Minneapolis to record “Control” stands out. It was the first time I was recording a CD without my family. It was a great. Q: I heard some guys stalked you by your hotel when you were recording “Control” in 1985. What’s that story? A: “Nasty” is the story for that question. That song came out of that experience. Q: What did Kevin Garnett say to you later after you brought him onstage at Target Center for the seductive “Rope Burn” in 1998? A: Kevin Garnett wanted to hook up. :0) Q: What do you like most about this tour? The least? A: I am having so much fun on this tour. It is the largest ever world tour for me. Whenever possible, I am choosing more intimate venues. I love being able to see everyone’s face in the audience. Q: What is it like to perform “Scream” without your brother Michael? A: It is amazing. It’s very therapeutic. The energy of the song is fierce but it makes me smile inside when I hear him, when I hear his voice. Q: What goes through your mind onstage on this tour vs. what went through your mind onstage during your arena tours? A: All I can think about during the show is how much fun I am having and how grateful I am to all the fans who have supported me all these years. Q: Why do you end the show with “Together Again”? A: I love what the song says… I am letting the audience know that we will be together again… hopefully soon! Q: Over the years, some people have said that Janet lip-syncs in concert. What’s the situation on this tour? Is all your singing live? A: Yes, I am singing live. WOW… 1998??? They went all the way there with it. Glad Janet got a chance to clear up the lip synchin rumors though. Keep reading for more…
