It’s good to see that people are still keeping Haiti’s needs on their mind. Colombian singer Shakira danced with students in Haiti on Thursday as she celebrated the renovation of a historic Catholic girls school damaged in the country’s devastating 2010 earthquake. With her song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” playing over loudspeakers, the Grammy-winning, hip-shaking pop star grooved with students from the Elie Dubois high school in downtown Port-au-Prince. Her Barefoot Foundation, which helps child victims of violence and disasters, and the Inter-American Development Bank each donated $400,000 to restore the high school. “I’m convinced that the key to a dignified future for Haiti is through education,” said Shakira, 34, wearing a black T-shirt and matching jeans. The nine-classroom, 250-student school was built in 1913, and was the first in Haiti to provide vocational training for girls, officials said. Construction is expected to begin in two months and will take up to 14 months to complete. Organizers have yet to put out bids. Said one student of the sexy Colombian’s charitable donation: “It’s so nice that we have a star coming and that she’s coming to help the school,” said Joselourdes Jean-Paul, a 19-year-old student. “With the new school, we’re going to learn more and learn better.” This is a beautiful gesture and we hope more people follow suit as Haiti has a long way to go before they full recover from the destruction they’ve suffered. However, if she really wants to make some big money she should ahv a fund-raising shake off live on TV with Bey Bey. Bet that’ll open those wallets. Source
Director Duncan Jones was inspired by everything from ‘Grand Theft Auto’ to ‘Quantum Leap.’ By Eric Ditzian Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment “Moon” wasn’t some slick Hollywood production. Director Duncan Jones didn’t have a studio’s deep pockets to dip into for “Avatar”-level visual effects. Instead, he built a miniature replica of a lunar base on which star Sam Rockwell got up to his strange activities. And it worked. The movie was a sci-fi stunner. So it’s no surprise Jones eyed a similar approach for his next feature, the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring “Source Code.” “We talked about using model miniatures for ‘Source Code,’ but the time frame was working against us,” Jones said, citing his star’s schedule. “So we used a lot of CGI.” Thus all those train explosions in the film — and there are a dizzying number — were created in a computer rather than in the real world. That’s rather fitting, after all, based on what the film is all about. “Moon,” though, is just one of the pop-culture influences on “Source Code” that Jones alerted us to in a recent chat. Read on for four more (and check back Monday for five secrets about the production that were simply too spoiler-filled to reveal before opening weekend). The Michel Gondry Connection Gyllenhaal plays a helicopter pilot named Captain Colter Stevens who’s part of an ultra-secret government program that sends him into the past — in another man’s body, eight minutes before a terrorist detonates a bomb onboard a commuter train, to be precise — again and again in an effort to discover the bomber’s identity and prevent the next attack. As a practical matter, that means the story revisits the same eight-minute sequence over and over and over. Jones’ challenge was to make this recurring event never seemed repetitious. For inspiration, he turned to Michel Gondry. “I remember hearing about how Gondry used to do music videos — he did Daft Punk and stuff like that,” Jones said. “He used to graph everything out and had these intricate diagrams of how to do things. So I took a shot at it that way and lifted out all of the repetitions that occur in the film, and then created a camera map about how I can revisit this event in a different way each time. That was the technical level. “Then on a narrative level,” he added. “I ensured new characters were introduced for each one. You never see the same thing twice.” The “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” Connection The “Source Code” link to Gondry doesn’t end with music videos. Jones also tapped Louis Morin, the visual-effects supervisor on “Eternal Sunshine,” to oversee the CG work on the new movie — in particular, those recurring train explosions. “He’s got that beautiful blend of being a real technical expert and also an artist,” Jones said. “We worked out how to make each of the explosions have its own personality and be visceral and scary. In the storyboards, we made sure the camera angles made the explosions feel up close and personal to the scale of the effect. Then in the animatic phase, where the objects are moving, you start to get a sense of textures and how much dirt is thrown in the air. You start to tweak it and get the visceral impact.” The “Grand Theft Auto” Connection For all the high-intensity train explosions, perhaps the film’s single-most astonishing shot is one of Gyllenhaal jumping off a moving train. Simple enough. But what makes it extraordinary is that the camera never cuts away and you see Gyllenhaal tumble and spin and wind up bloodied and bruised on the pavement. “It’s a tribute to ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ ” Jones explained. “When you’re driving around at high speed in that computer game and you open the door and jump out of the car, the camera doesn’t cut away; it stays with you as you roll. I wanted to do that shot because I’d never seen it in a movie before. “That was some cutting-edge post-production effects,” he continued. “We played a game of chicken with the technology to make sure it was capable of doing that by the time we were ready to do the effect. Fortunately, things meshed at just the right time.” The “Quantum Leap” Connection Of all the sci-fi productions to come before it, “Source Code” might put viewers most in the mind of “Quantum Leap.” Jones, too, immediately thought of that NBC series when he read the script. Ever the playful auteur, the director decided to recruit the show’s star to get what he called “a little tip of the hat in there.” “I don’t know if you noticed, but Scott Bakula does a little cameo,” he revealed. “He’s the voice of Colter’s father. He even says, ‘Oh boy,’ in the middle of their phone conversation, as a little clue!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . I thought the pictures I had up earlier today of Blake Lively were hot, until I saw these shots and almost lost my mind. When I say lost my mind, I mean pop a boner at the Starbucks where I was using their wifi. I’m not allowed back. Anyhow, the girl is just hot, plain and simple, putting her in a fancy little dress like this is just icing on the cake. I don’t know what the award she won was for, but I’m assuming it has something to do with her hotness or sexiness or long legs or something along those lines.
After hours of onstage drama, Elton John week spelled elimination for two more girls. By Jim Cantiello Thia Megia performs on “American Idol” on Thursday Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox It was Elton John week on “American Idol,” which meant the most contemporary song performed was from 1983. The top 11, including a newly saved and shaved Casey Abrams , mostly warbled ballads, making Wednesday night’s two-hour episode feel as “samey” as Elton’s musical output of late. (For an even zippier recap of the week’s “Idol” insanity, hit play on the embedded video below for Jim Cantiello’s “American Idol” in 60 Seconds recap.) Pia lied to America when she promised an uptempo song this week, while Stefano lulled America to sleep with dreams of being held by Tony Danza. Naima confused America with a new dialect, leaving millions of viewers wondering if a stereotypical Jamaican accent done by an African-American is still racist. Then, Jacob was reprimanded for being over-dramatic onstage so he reacted the way any drama queen would: renting a smoke machine and pretending to weep. Sorry seems to be the hardest word, indeed! Scotty sang for his memaw. Thia sang for her brother. But Haley Reinhart sang for her supper, ferociously taking a bite out of “Bennie and the Jets” and spitting it out with a succulent hissssss. Oh, and James Durbin torched a piano. Thursday night’s results show was like a never-ending awkward group number — chock-full of half-rehearsed collaborations that revealed the cliques in the cast. Sorry, Jacob Lusk and li’l country boy Scotty, you aren’t invited to the dorm-room band from hell that is Paul McDonald, James, Casey and Stefano, dwarfed by a normal-size keyboard. Fantasia stopped by to debut her new single, “Collard Greens and Cornbread,” then Jamie Foxx, will.i.am and four thousand Six Flags performers danced around to “Hot Wings.” Ultimately, the meal ticket ended for Thia “Dead Air” Megia and Naima “Boom Fire” Adedapo … continuing “American Idol” ‘s disturbing Lady-Singer Massacre of 2011. One of these four bands will win the 2011 MMM title; vote now in the Newsroom blog! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way and Gerard Way Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Three weeks ago, 64 bands embarked on the voyage that is MTV’s Musical March Madness . Now, after millions of votes and nearly as many grueling matchups, only four remain. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore and Disturbed each punched their ticket for the Final Four late Thursday night, and one of them will hoist the MMM trophy next week. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! It wasn’t easy for any of them. Much like the Sweet 16, voting in the Elite 8 broke records and went down to the wire. We wouldn’t expect anything less, not when the bands still competing were this big, and the stakes this high. And they’re about to get even higher. Because voting in our Final Four matchups — #9 Disturbed vs. #3 Green Day and #5 Paramore vs. #3 My Chemical Romance — is now under way over on the Newsroom blog, and it’ll be up to you to determine the two bands that’ll go head-to-head for the MMM championship. Final Four voting has begun on the Newsroom blog! While you consider just whom you’ll be voting for — if you haven’t made your mind up already — let’s take a look back at each band’s journey to the Final Four. Disturbed The lowest-seeded band still standing, Disturbed entered MMM as a #9, but quickly served notice that they were a force to be reckoned with, knocking off #8 the Dave Matthews Band in the opening round, then shocking the world by slipping by the Midwest’s top seed, the Foo Fighters , to reach the Sweet 16. Then, they handled Patrick Stump and, perhaps inspired by frontman David Draiman’s now legendary “time to make a statement” speech, took down defending MMM champs Coheed and Cambria in an air-tight battle. With more than 105,000 votes cast, Disturbed outdistanced Coheed by less than 500 to win the Midwest region and earn a spot in the Final Four. Green Day Last year, Green Day were sent packing in the opening round of the tournament, an exit that left them with a bitter taste in their mouths and a sizeble chip on their shoulders. So, in their 2011 march to the Final Four, they took no prisoners, absolutely dominating Adam Lambert in the first round, then going toe-to-toe with a pair of their fellow rock heavyweights — U2 and Blink-182 — and barely breaking a sweat. Their toughest challenge came in the Elite 8 against, ironically enough, Panic! at the Disco, the very band that sent them packing last year. Green Day got revenge , withstanding a late surge from the Panic! guys to take the West region title and head to the Final Four. Paramore Nearly two years ago, we wrote that Paramore were poised “to become the kings and queen of the South.” Little did we know how right we’d be; after a string of impressive victories, Hayley Williams and the guys are, in fact, the rulers of the region, and they’ve certainly earned their crowns. No band faced a stiffer series of matchups throughout the tourney — Paramore drew No Doubt in the opening round and Kings of Leon in the second — and that was before they took on tournament vets Tokio Hotel in the Elite 8. Each time, they rose to the challenge, taking the South region title and, in the process, may very well have become the favorites to win it all. My Chemical Romance It was heartbreak city for MCR last year, as they rode a wave of fervent fan support all the way to the MMM championship game, only to be crushed by Coheed. They’re the only band to climb the mountain once again, and they’ve done it with a frightening level of proficiency. Because, to this point, My Chemical Romance have yet to be really tested, rolling #14 Panda Bear in round one, #11 Rage Against the Machine in round two and #2 Radiohead in the Sweet 16 . They ended 16th-seeded Sum 41’s dream run in the Elite 8 , wrapping up the East title and barely breaking a sweat. In the Final Four, they’ll face off against Paramore, which might very well be the de facto 2011 championship game. MTV’s Musical March Madness has reached the Final Four. All winners are determined by your votes, so, if your favorite act is still standing, it’s up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — and you’d better; the MMM trophy is within reach! Struggling with repeated worries can be a real challenge. The following prayer invites God to calm and guide those who struggle with anxiety. Worry is a continuous pattern of ineffective thought. Worrying is unresolved thought that leaves you unproductive. “God of power, calm my mind. Let me rest in You. Ease my anxiety, and let me simply be- quiet and peaceful in your arms. Amen.” Your worry prevents you from acting, because when you are worrying, you miss the opportunities that you would see if you were not so focused on your fear. If you ever watched a dog chasing it’s tail, then you can understand how worrying is an endless cycle. Worrying will not bring you a single token of resolve, it’s fruitless, worrying takes you out. Recently, I did a book review of Hip Hop Mogul Russell Simmons’ book Super Rich where he explains how Meditation provides him with profound mental moments of stillness as a byproduct of the physical benefits of Yoga. It has cured him of headaches and has calmed his nerves. Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the conditioned, “thinking” mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. There are many different meditation methods. At the core of meditation is the goal to focus and eventually quiet your mind. As you progress, you will find that you can meditate anywhere and at any time, accessing an inner calm no matter what’s going on around you. You will also find that you can better control your reactions to things as you become increasingly aware of your thoughts (letting go of anger, for example). But first, you have to learn to tame your mind. Claude Kelly says he envisioned Spears as ‘a man-eater’ when he wrote the track for her. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Eric Charbonneau/ Le Studio/ Wireimage Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale album, due out on Tuesday, is a sexy, dark dance record meant to be played heading to the club, at the club and at the post-party after the club. One of the tracks that exemplifies this is the fiery, Claude Kelly-penned “Gasoline.” Kelly conceived of the searing dance tune while thinking of Britney’s sexiest moments. “The picture that I envisioned in my mind was ‘Toxic,’ ‘Slave 4 U,’ ‘Boys,’ like that kind of [thing where] it’s sexy and it’s hot, sweaty and she’s in a club and she sees a guy,” he explained to MTV News. “That mysterious, exotic look, that whole imagery and that era where she’s a man-eater and all the girls want to be her and all the guys would kill to be with her. I think she pulled it off for sure.” Kelly also wrote the title track off of Spears’ 2008 album, Circus , but this time around he wanted to take things to a new level. “I’m super happy with the way it came out. She sounds fresh and exciting,” he said of the track, which was recorded in L.A. while Kelly was busy working on other projects elsewhere. “For this time, she’s in a place where she wants to be edgier again, so I was like, ‘How am I going to make the word gasoline a cool song?’ ” he recalled. “That’s really the challenge for me and I tried to play off what I know of Britney from the past, from the Blackout era, when she was more mysterious and dark. “The one thing that kind of strings all of [the songs] along is that feeling of edginess and mysterious and sexy and a little bit playful but a little bit dangerous,” he continued. “If you can tap into what she’s in the mood for, which is what happened with ‘Gasoline,’ clearly her mind was in the zone that ‘I want to be edgy.’ ” The party never stops on Femme Fatale , and Kelly is sure that the fans will be happy about that. “The most common thing I hear people say about Britney is ‘I want to dance.’ Girls love to dance to Britney,” he said. “I think people missed that and wanted that … This one was like, ‘Let’s her in the clubs again.’ ” Related Photos Britney Gets Angelic In These Femme Fatale Promo Shots Related Artists Britney Spears
