Stephen Colbert, Drake, Lil Wayne Have 2010’s Top Retweeted Tweets

Gulf oil spill, World Cup, VMAs and Justin Bieber among the top trends of the year on Twitter and Facebook. By Gil Kaufman Stephen Colbert Photo: Scott Wintrow/ Getty Images Not only were people riveted by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this year; they also couldn’t resist sharing some wry humor on the matter. That’s why Stephen Colbert’s 140-character comment about the matter was Twitter’s Top Retweeted Tweet of 2010 . “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles,’ ” read the post, that earned the comedian a Golden Tweet award on “The Colbert Report” Tuesday night. Much of the top 10 Retweeted Tweets were from musicians: Drake (#2), Lil Wayne (#3), Justin Bieber (#4), Joe Jonas (#6), Lady Gaga (#7), Kanye West (#8) and Rihanna (#9). A post from spoof account @alqueda was #5, and an ironically uplifting piece of advice from @sh–mydadsays made the list at #10. Earlier this week, Twitter and Facebook released their respective lists of the top trends on their sites over the past 12 months. Each is a fascination look at the obsessions and globally unifying events, people, pop culture fixations and bizarre crazes that grabbed our digital attention this year. While there’s some crossover on the Twitter and Facebook lists, the more interesting parts are where they diverge. For instance, the #1 item on Facebook’s “Memology 2010” global list of top status trends was “HMU,” a shorthand status update that translates to “hit me up,” meaning someone wants you to call or text them. The rest of the list featured a mixture of more predictable/generic trends, including: World Cup (#2), Movies (#3), iPad and iPhone (#4), Haiti (#5), Justin Bieber (#6), Games on Facebook (#7), Mineros/Miners (referring to the trapped Chilean miners) (#8), the B.o.B. song “Airplanes” (#9) and 2011. Over on Twitter , the #Hindsight2010 list of top trends featured a few of the same items, but users dug a bit deeper into specific movies, events and fads. Topping the list was the disastrous Gulf oil spill, followed by the mania over the FIFA World Cup, then the mind-bending thriller “Inception,” the Haiti Earthquake, vuvuzela (the ubiquitous buzzing sound of the World Cup) and the Apple iPad. Rounding out the list were the Google Android phone (#7), Justin Bieber (#8), “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (#9) and the late eight-tentacled World Cup prognosticator, Pulpo Paul. MTV has reason to celebrate the list, as our own Video Music Awards came in at # 1 on the list of top TV trends, and the MTV Movie Awards were #9. “Pretty Little Liars” was #2 on the list, followed by “True Blood,” “Walking Dead” and the Grammy Awards. The men and women of “Glee” came in at #6, just ahead of “Family Guy” and “CSI.” The American Music Awards rounded out the top 10. Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Open Thread: ‘F–k You, Boy!’

A cogent, if unexpected, result of the ongoing civil war in the Democratic Party has been the revalation among the mainstream press that (gasp) it's not racist to criticize Barack Obama. Better late than never, I suppose. Naomie Emery explores this fact in her Wednesday column : Boy, some people fly off the handle at nothing these days. “F— the president,” an unidentified Democrat said at a House caucus, concerning the tax deal President Obama cut with Republicans. At once, the keen ears of Maureen Dowd picked up a message: “Fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: 'F— you, boy!' ” There was no doubt in her mind that this was the message. read more

When MTV News caught up with Bieber at the American Music Awards last month, he revealed what fans can expect from the movie. “They’ll be surprised just to see I’m a regular person,” he said. “I’m a regular teenage boy. I like girls and I like to hang out with my friends. It’s gonna be taking them into my world, but also it’s their world ’cause it’s just normal.” “I want to let people know there’s a lot of people that are discouraging in life and that will tell you you can’t do something, but you just got to remember that the sky’s the limit,” Bieber told us when he released his book, “First Step 2 Forever,” in early November. “You’re able to do whatever you set your mind to as long as you remember to keep God first and stay grounded. So I think the movie really explains that, and it’s really inspiring.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

Those who give up essential liberties for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. — Benjamin Franklin The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. – James Madison The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders…tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. – Herman Goering I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. – James Baldwin Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices. – Voltaire The cry has been that when war is declared, all opposition should be hushed. Britney Spears: A Look Back At Her Singles … So Far

With her new album due in March, we revisit some of the pop princess’ many hits. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Jive Now that Britney Spears has announced that she will be releasing a new album in March 2011, fans must be wondering what her latest musical endeavor will sound like. The as-yet-untitled effort is a follow-up to 2008’s well-received Circus , which helped resurrect the singer’s career after a dark time in her life. No information regarding the upcoming album has emerged, but Britney’s faithful followers have watched her change up her look and sound with each single over the span of her decade-plus career, as she evolved from a bubblegum-pop princess to a sexy dance-club siren. Let’s trace Spears’ musical journey by taking a look at some of her most memorable tunes. In 1999, a fresh-faced Spears released ” …Baby One More Time” (produced by Max Martin), the title track off her massive debut album. She got the conversation about her sexuality started thanks to a provocative video in which she danced around in a Catholic school uniform, as well as the song’s equally provocative lyrics, where she longingly sang, “My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess, I still believe/ When I’m not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me baby one more time.” It’s to be noted that the song originally was intended for TLC. In the video for “Oops! … I Did It Again” (produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub), Spears’ smash from the 2000 album of the same name, the pigtails and skirt were gone, replaced by a red catsuit. That visual, as well as the song’s lyrical content, reflected Spears’ evolution from naughty schoolgirl to intergalactic sex kitten, both in her video and on the song’s lyrical content. For “I’m a Slave 4 U” (produced by the Neptunes) off 2001’s Britney , Spears declared her sexual independence. No longer was she just teasing about the idea that she loved the beat of dance music and how sexy it made her feel, instead she was explicitly sharing it with the world. Plus, who could forget all the sweat in that video. In 2003, Spears teamed up with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for “Me Against the Music” (produced by Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet), the sexy lead single from In the Zone . While the darker, more synth-heavy “Toxic” would become the album’s defining tune, “Me Against the Music” picked up where “Slave” left off: Spears battling the demon she has inside of her that just loves to come out on the dance floor. After a few years of not putting out any music, Spears hit the club again with 2007’s “Gimme More” (produced by Danja) off the aptly titled Blackout . Between the release of In the Zone and Blackout , Spears had married, divorced and become a mother — she also had started to act erratically. The track, which relied more heavily on underground dance and electro than most of Spears’ previous singles, was a highly sexualized tune about getting it on. After the darkness of Blackout , Spears got back to her fun and frolicking old ways on the 2008 Circus single “Womanizer” (produced by the Outsyders). The track was a return to form for Spears after the lackluster response to Blackout , and it brought the discussion back around to her music and away from her sometimes topsy-turvy personal life. In the song’s video, Spears gets back at a player, and really has the last laugh. The clip also features ffotage of a completely nude Britney in a steamy sauna. In 2009, Spears shot to the top of the charts with the danceable track “Three” (produced by Martin and Shellback) off The Singles Collection . The tune was an instant smash, and featured Spears robotically singing about a m

Rihanna for Interview Magazine of the Day

I know why Rihanna is famous. She brainwashes you with her songs. I’ve seen Josie and the Pussycats, I know how the music industry works, cuz some songs just rape my fucking brain hard the first time I hear them and the repressed memories of the shit keep coming out to haunt me at the weirdest times, like when I am trying to be intimate with another person or intimate with myself, or pretty much doing anything, all I hear is her new fucking song from the AMA performance….I fell asleep with it in my head, I woke up with it in my head, I may have even dreamt about it….It is still in my mind and I’ve been thinking about it all day…Oh na na what’s my name, Oh na na, what’s my name…that song basically revamped this bitch in my eyes and made me a fucking believer again. Oh na na, What’s my name, Oh Na na, what’s my name….Seriously, she’s back and it scares me how inconsistent and bi-polar and schizo I am about this bitch….Oh na na, what’s my name, oh na na what’s my name….Fuck, I hated her, I found her vile looking, everytime I saw her I was disgusted about everything about her, from selling out her man for putting her in her place, to her thighs….but she’s got me in her Voodoo West Indian spell….get her out of my brain….this isn’t making sense to me…Oh na na, what’s my name, Oh na na, what’s my name….fuck. Singing this song makes me feel homosexual. Here she is in a recent Interview magazine spread: I’ve watched this AMA performace so many times, I know every single move by heart. Seriously. This was the game changer for me. Rihanna’s back. I have lost my mind…
