Justin Bieber’s Under The Mistletoe Debuts At #1

Rapper Wale comes in at #2 with Ambition. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Island Def Jam It’s going to be a very Justin Christmas. As predicted , Justin Bieber will land his second #1 album in a row next week when his holiday disc, Under the Mistletoe, nabs the top spot on the Billboard 200. And though in recent days he’s been facing ongoing questions about the paternity suit filed against him by a 20-year-old woman, Bieber has been promoting Mistletoe hard, which appears to have paid off with sales of 210,000 in its first week. That was more than enough to hold off the second effort from rapper Wale, Ambition, which will come in at #2 (164,000), according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Country singer Miranda Lambert is at #3 with Four the Record (133,000), edging out former “Britain’s Got Talent” star Susan Boyle , whose second effort, Someone to Watch Over Me, scores a #4 bow thanks to 132,000 units moved. English act Florence and the Machine make it into the top 10 at #6 with Ceremonials (105,000), while singer/actor Tyrese sneaks in at #9 with Open Invitation (76,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele holds strong at #5 (108,000), Coldplay fall six spots in week two to #7 as Mylo Xyloto sales dropped 77 percent to 104,000, Michael Bubl

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Tops Billboard

Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger comes in at a distant #2. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto Photo: Parlophone Records Coldplay can be as self-deprecating as they want, but the fact remains that they are one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They proved it when their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, moved more than 447,000 copies in its first week on the charts, according to Nielsen SoundScan, notching the third-highest Billboard 200 debut of 2011 behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne. In a testament to their chart prowess, in addition to snagging their third consecutive #1 debut, the band’s previous four albums are back on the charts as well, down in the mid-50s and 60s. The group has referred to Mylo Xyloto — which features a cameo from Rihanna on “Princess of China” — as “schizophrenic” thanks to the wide range of sounds it explores. Coldplay’s first-week showing was more than enough to keep Kelly Clarkson from hitting the top of the charts in the debut week of her latest album, Stronger, which is a distant #2 on sales of 163,000. Clarkson is back doing what she does best on the disc: writing awesomely powerful pop breakup anthems like “Mr. Know It All.” She told MTV News that she particularly likes that “feisty” single, since it is so “in your face.” Crooner Michael Bubl

Tim Pawlenty Loves Lady Gaga

If you have no idea who Tim Pawlenty is, we don’t blame you. The GOP presidential candidate polls way behind Mitt Romney, Michelle Bachmann and even Sarah Palin , who on top of being incapable, isn’t even running! Point being, T-Paw is running, even if no one outside Minnesota, where he served two terms as governor, knows it. So how does he change things up? Get his name in the headlines. More importantly, get Lady Gaga’s name in there. In this Q&A, he asks the interviewers which Gaga song is their favorite: Tim Pawlenty Talks Lady Gaga Granted, it was a personal and pop-culture interview, so it’s not like he name-dropped “Born This Way” in a debate. But he digs the song. Good to know. The a cappella version is better, if you ask him, though, and “Bad Romance” gives it a run for a money because of the beat. Think he’s making all this up? Even if he’s an avid watcher of Lady Gaga videos , we don’t expect she’ll be pulling the lever for Tim in ’12. He’s staunchly opposed to gay marriage.

Steven Tyler, Rihanna, Robert Pattinson Pop Up At ACM Awards

By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood at the ACM Awards on Sunday Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images You could be excused if you tuned into the 46th Academy of Country Music Awards show on Sunday night and thought that maybe you’d overslept and missed the Grammys. In addition to the usual compliment of cowboy hats and bedazzled boots, there was a healthy dose of rock and pop glitter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In addition to “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler lending his formidable pipes to a duet with Carrie Underwood on her hit “Undo It,” the pair chewed up the stage for Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” with Underwood looking comfortable screeching the song’s chorus into a microphone with a glittery whip on the end. There were also some awards handed out, including four to Miranda Lambert, who won Best Female Vocalist, as well as Single, Song and Video of the Year honors for her tune “The House That Built Me.” But her roll ended at the fan-voted Entertainer of the Year trophy, which went to Taylor Swift, 21, the youngest-ever winner of that honor. “This is the first time I’ve ever won this, and I’m just losing my mind,” a teary Swift said in her signature breathless manner. “The fact that this is from the fans makes it so beautiful. … You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Ever … We just got back from touring in Europe and Asia, so thank you for this wonderful welcome-home gift.” Earlier in the night, Swift premiered her new single, a get back tune at critics who’ve slagged her live singing in the past, which she performed while plucking a banjo. It was a big night for Grammy winners Lady Antebellum as well, with the country trio winning Top Vocal Group and Album of the Year for Need You Now, while bluegrass newcomers the Band Perry snagged Best New Artist. It was five in a row for Brad Paisley, who once again went home with the Best Male Vocalist hardware and the Gwyneth Paltrow-starring “Country Strong” took the Tex Ritter Award for films that emphasize country music. The performance-heavy three-hour show also featured the sight of Rihanna being joined by Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles for a dramatic duet on Ri’s new single, “California King Bed,” and folk pop icon James Taylor joined Zac Brown for a medley of “Colder Weather” and “Sweet Baby James.” Among the presenters were “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, as well as Robert Pattinson , who appeared on the show with his “Water for Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon. Academy of Country Music Awards Winners: Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert & More

The 46th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards was officially ladies’ night, with Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift and others taking home the top honors. Lady Antebellum – the co-ed trio Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood – clocked in the most wins, but the evening’s highest honor went to Swift. The singer was crowned entertainer of the year. “I’m just losing my mind,” Swift told the audience after her big win. “The fact that this is from the fans makes its so beautiful.” Lambert, meanwhile, snagged honors for favorite female vocalist, record of the year, video of the year and song of the year for “The House that Built Me.” Lady Antebellum won big, like they did at this year’s Grammy Awards, for their smash single “Need You Now,” scoring album of the year and top vocal group. Hosts Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton, soon-to-be husband of Lambert, kicked off the ceremony with a few words of wisdom. For starters, don’t mess with Swift. “If you make her mad, she’ll write a song about you,” McEntire said. The show included a performance by Rihanna and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, plus A-list presenters such as Gossip Girl ‘s Chace Crawford, Celine Dion, and Water for Elephants co-stars Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. The show took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. What did you think? Did the voters make the right calls?
