Can we all agree that Mississippi is the epitome of the land that got left behind ? Via NY Daily News reports : Jagjeet Singh, 49, a trucker from California, was driving through the Magnolia State when he was pulled over for driving with a flat tire in Pike County on Jan. 16, according to a complaint filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. Singh was taken to a weigh station operated by the state’s Department of Transportation, where he says cops ordered him to turn over his “kirpan,” a 3-inch ceremonial blade that all Sikh men traditionally carry in their waistbands, the ACLU said. “Contending, wrongly, that his kirpan was illegal, the DOT officer demanded that Mr. Singh turn it over,” the ACLU wrote in the complaint filed Wednesday. The letter said that Singh tried to explain that the blade was a sacred talisman, and even showed the officers videos on his phone that explained the Sikh faith. “In response, however, the officers laughed at him and mocked his religious beliefs,” the letter read. “One officer declared that all Sikhs are depraved and ‘terrorists.’” Singh was arrested for refusing to obey a command, because he would not turn over the kirpan. “The officers’ shameful treatment of Mr. Singh was an abuse of their authority and a betrayal of the public’s trust that law enforcement officials will carry out their duties free from prejudice,” said Bear Atwood, a lawyer for the Mississippi office of the ACLU. “The fact that officers may be unfamiliar with Sikhism or other minority relitions does not give them license to harass and degrade members of th public who follow these faiths.” It gets worse though. When Singh made a court appearance in March over the charge the judge was just as IGNORANT as the backwards azz onetime officers. As he waited for his attorney in the back of the courtroom, four officers approached him and told him that Judge Aubrey Rimes had ordered them to kick him out if he did not remove his turban, Atwood said. “Moreover, they told Mr. Singh that Judge Rimes would punish him if he failed to remove the headdress,” Atwood wrote in a statement. Singh’s attorney went to the judge’s chambers, where his orders were allegedly repeated. “He further stated that Mr. Singh would not be allowed to re-enter the courtroom unless he removed ‘that rag’ from his head and threatened to call Mr. Singh last on the docket if he continued to wear the religious headdress,” Atwood said. Because Singh refused to remove the turban and violate his religious beliefs, he was forced to wait several hours before he was allowed in the courtroom to plead guilty and agree to pay a fine. Jared Ravencraft, a DOT spokesman, confirmed the arrest, but would not comment any further on the alleged incident. The ACLU said it wanted to see action taken on behalf of the state’s DOT and the Mississippi Judicial Commission, which investigates complaints of ethics violations by jurists. We’re gonna need the good ole boys of Mississippi to catch up with modern times. Ignorance is not acceptable. Photo Courtesy ACLU
Holy s#*t! WTF?!?! Satanic Temple Hold “Pink Mass” To Turn Westboro Church Leader’s Dead Mother Lesbian Via HuffingtonPost By now, everyone’s just about had it with the Westboro Baptist Church, a group whose members use national tragedies as opportunities to forward anti-gay hate speech. Ironically, their planned protests often bring communities together in opposition to their message. Now, an unlikely group has mounted a gay offensive against the WBC. On Sunday, July 14, the Satanic Temple, a New York-based organization that seeks to foster “benevolence and empathy among all people” through Satan, performed a ritual called a “pink mass” at the Mississippi gravesite of Catherine Idalette Johnston, mother of WBC founder Fred Phelps Jr. The aim? To “turn” the WBC founder’s mom gay for all eternity. “Upon completion of the pink mass ceremony, Catherine Johnston is now gay in the afterlife,” notes the Satanic Temple website, which has the cheeky URL http://www.westboro-baptist.com . “Fred Phelps is obligated to believe that his mother is now gay … [and] if beliefs are inviolable rights, nobody has the right to challenge our right to believe that Fred Phelps believes that his mother is now gay.” The latter assertion appears to be a play on the WBC’s own stance that their beliefs are totally infallible. The Pink Mass was performed twice — once with two gay men, and once with two lesbians — in an affirmation of the Satanist Temple’s belief in “freedom and the pursuit of happiness for all people.” The temple is now encouraging same-sex couples to visit the grave and perform their own pink masses. According to the Satanist Temple website, temple spokesman Lucien Greaves officiated the ceremonies while wearing horned headgear, and then proceeded to put his “man meat” on Johnston’s grave This. You have to be one dumb motherfawker to think that filling your 2-month-old baby’s bottle with bleach is going to be beneficial… Via WESH: A 2-month-old baby was recovering Sunday after authorities said her father added bleach to her baby formula. Ocala Police Department Sgt. Michael Summer said Carron Washington, 20, fed Caelynn Washington bleach because he heard it could help with the baby’s congestion. According to a police report, the child’s mother went into the child’s room after she heard her crying, and the child spit up a clear liquid that smelled like bleach. She called 911, and the child was taken to the hospital. A hospital employee called police. “You smell the baby bottle and it smells like complete bleach. And the parents aren’t giving us a good story about how it got in there,” the caller told a 911 dispatcher. Police said Carron Washington broke down crying at the police station and admitted to putting bleach in the child’s bottle, saying he heard from a friend in school that it works as a medical cure. He said he mixed less than a cap-full of bleach with less than two ounces of formula. The baby was originally taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala but was moved to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville, where she was listed in stable condition. Medical staff said they noticed the baby’s vomit smelled like bleach, and the bottle of baby formula also smelled the same way. Washington faces charges of aggravated child abuse. He was held on $25,000 bond. Seriously, though??? He could not have really thought that feeding his baby bleach was a good idea. SMH.
What in the cotton pickin’ hell took so long? Mississippi just got around to ratifying the 13th Amendment and residents there mostly have the film “Lincoln” to thank… Via NYPost reports : Abraham Lincoln’s historic battle to end slavery has finally ended, 148 years after the 13th Amendment was first passed. The landmark event happened earlier this month when Mississippi became the final state to officially ratify the amendment, which ended slavery. The remarkable oversight was found because Dr. Ranjan Batra, an associate professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, saw Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and was inspired by the film’s message. Batra returned home and started researching when each individual state ratified the 13th Amendment and was shocked to learn that Mississippi was the only state that had failed to do so. Batra shared the horrifying discovery with his friend Ken Sullivan, who then went and saw “Lincoln” for himself. “People stood up and applauded at the end of it. That’s the first time I ever saw an audience do that,” Batra told the Clarion-Ledger. “I felt very connected to history.” The strange part for Sullivan was that he remembered when the state ratified the amendment in 1995, when he was a senior in high school. Apparently, state Senator Hillman Frazier introduced a resolution to ratify the amendment in 1995, which unanimously passed both the Mississippi Senate and House, only for the resolution to never become official because then-Secretary of State Dick Molpus never sent a copy of the resolution to the Office of the Federal Register. The state’s mistake was finally corrected on January 30th when the office of current Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann filed the official paperwork. On February 7th the director of the Federal Register, Charles A. Barth, wrote back, “With this action, the State of Mississippi has ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.” “We’re very deliberate in our state. We finally got it right.” Frazier said at the news. Better late than never, we guess… Shutterstock
