Missy Elliott’s ‘Eavesdropping’ Led To Monica’s ‘So Gone’

‘I’m embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,’ Monica tells MTV News of New Life album. By Rob Markman Monica Photo: MTV News Monica may have titled her latest album New Life, but there are some things the velvety-voiced singer wanted to keep the same — including her working relationship with Missy Elliott . ” New Life was just me saying, ‘This is the place that I’m at and I’m embracing the things that are different now and the things that have changed for me,’ ” she told MTV News on Tuesday (April 10). The duo have worked together for years, and in 2003, they came up with one of Monica’s most memorable songs to date: “So Gone.” It’s a chemistry that neither wants to abandon anytime soon. “Missy is one of my dearest friends, and I think her humility and her compassion for other people is what makes her music so great,” Monica said. The bond that both women share is the reason they yield such memorable results. “Knock Knock,” “A Dozen Roses (Remind Me of You)” and the Grammy-nominated “Everything to Me” are just a few of the records on which they’ve collaborated. Monica counts “So Gone” as her favorite to date. “She wrote that record after eavesdropping on my phone conversation,” Monica recalled, laughing. “So when you think about things like that, that can only be done by somebody that’s very close to you.” Elliott didn’t write Monica’s lyrics — Jazmine Sullivan gets credit for that — but Missy did produce the breakup ode. The two worked out of Missy’s house in Atlanta and came up with songs that were vocally challenging for the veteran singer. This time, though, there was no eavesdropping. “When it came to ‘Until It’s Gone,’ I probably was just sharing,” Monica laughed. “I was already in a sharing mood.” What’s your favorite song from Monica’s New Life ? Demi Lovato’s Unbroken: Putting It Back Together

Demi Lovato Teases Tour Plans

Following two shows slated for September and the release of her album Unbroken, Lovato says a bigger tour may be in the works. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images When fans heard that Demi Lovato would be playing two intimate shows in mid-September, they promptly bought up the tickets. Lovato’s concerts , slated for the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on September 17 and Club Nokia in Los Angeles on September 23, sold out in minutes — 30 minutes, to be exact. When MTV News caught up with Lovato last week in Los Angeles, the singer explained that the gigs are meant to serve as a “thank-you” to her fans, who have been so supportive of her and her new music, including the chart-topping “Skyscraper.” “It definitely is [a preview]. I wanted to say thank you to my fans,” she said. “I wanted to show them how thankful I am for the support they gave me for ‘Skyscraper.’ At this point, ‘Skyscraper’ has done so well because of them, and I want to show them how thankful I am. “And hopefully when I perform the concerts, Unbroken will be coming out. I’ll be really nervous to get back onstage for the first time since then, but I’ll be really excited,” Lovato said of her new album, which drops September 20. Does this mean that Lovato is planning a bigger tour for her Lovatics? “It could be a tease for a bigger tour. I don’t know,” she said. In addition to “Skyscraper,” Unbroken will feature songs with Iyaz, Missy Elliott and Timbaland , Jason Der

Demi Lovato Hopes To Inspire Others With Her ‘Honest Journey’

Singer explains why she chose ‘Skyscraper’ as her first single instead of ‘just another dance song.’ By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage Demi Lovato proclaimed her inner strength on the emotional power ballad, “Skyscraper,” the lead single off her album, Unbroken, which drops later this month. The track immediately connected with her fans, who have stuck by her side over the last year as she’s battled personal issues. Their support of the track, Lovato explained to MTV News last week, has given her newfound strength as she sets out to launch the next phase of her bustling music career. “When the song came out, it went #1 on iTunes instantly and it was so surprising to me,” she said at a fan meet-and-greet in Los Angeles, where Lovatics lined up for blocks to meet Demi . “I wasn’t expecting that at all. It’s been such a whirlwind, and I’ve been so blessed and so thankful for it.” In “Skyscraper,” Lovato confronts her issues — the ones for which she sought treatment last fall — because, she said, she wanted to keep her fans in the loop about her growth as a person. “I’ve been pretty honest,” she said. “My whole journey has been about telling my story and hoping that when I share my story, it inspires somebody. So, when I decided to come out with a single that was honest and about my journey and about standing strong and tall like a skyscraper, I hope that it inspired people. “I thought that there was a bigger opportunity for me to come out with a song that would inspire people, rather than it be just another dance song on the radio,” she added. Sure, “Skyscraper” has a message, but there are also some fun tracks on the album, Demi promises, including her Missy Elliott/Timbaland collabo, “All Night Long.” “The song that Missy and I did together, Timbaland’s actually on it, too, and it’s fun,” she said. “It’s about staying up all night long and singing it to the boy that you like, and it’s flirty and fun and it’s not too grown-up, but it’s grown-up enough.”

Biggie’s Mom Has Lil’ Kim Removed From Monica Single

Newlywed R&B star Monica has found herself in the middle of a family feud. The ATL  singer recently collaborated with Rick Ross, Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim for the single, “Anything.” The song samples David Porter’s “I’m Afraid the Masquerade Is Over” used for the Notorious B.I.G’s classic “Who Shot Ya?” and the Queen Bee cribs a few lines from the Biggie hit in her verse. (Listen below) According to Monica’s twitter account Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace has stopped the single from being released because Lil’ Kim appears on the song. As custodian of Biggie’s estate, Ms. Wallace approves any samples of her late son’s music. “I am just finding out what has happened to my single and myself & Missy are beyond hurt that @LilKim was removed. She’s our friend, a legend,” Monica wrote. “Lil Kim will get the respect she deserves at all cost. The clearance was revoked and I’m fighting to get it reinstated by the Biggie Estate.” Ms. Wallace and Lil’ Kim have been engaged in a very public feud over the past few years, most recently over Kim’s portrayal in the biopic Notorious . Based on Monica’s tweets, the song would not be cleared unless Lil’ Kim’s vocals were removed. Despite her displeasure, Monica maintained her respect for Ms. Wallace and did not take sides, insisting that she “respects all parties involved” and hopes to have the song reinstated with Lil’ Kim featured. Lil’ Kim has taken the high road thus far simply writing, “I want ya’ll to know that Missy Elliot and Monica Brown have been going hard a s mothaf*cka for this situation. I love them so much! We are planning something even BIGGER for you guys.” WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT What do you think? Should Biggie’s mom let this one go or do you think she did the right thing blocking the record?
