Jay Electronica Is Our Fire Starter Of The Year

Nomadic MC spit heat in 2010, conjuring the ‘Ghost of Christopher Wallace’ with Diddy, earning a nod from Nas and a deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Gus Stewart/ Redferns/ MTV News Jay Electronica is an MC shrouded in as much mystery as his densely packed rhymes. Raised in New Orleans, with stops in Detroit, Philadelphia and Brooklyn, which the rapper now calls home, the literary-leaning rapper arrived on the scene as a fully formed adult. His lyrics prove the point with references to everything from the JFK assassination (“My World (Nas Salute)”) to Kurt Vonnegut (“Exhibit A (Transformations)”). But with few details in terms of backstory beyond his hard-to-find rhymes, his narrative is being scripted in real time for the hip-hop community. The start of that tale was officially birthed this year with Jay’s breakout hit, the Just Blaze-backed “Exhibit C.” With an elaborate rhyme pattern and illustrious production, Jay Elect announced his arrival with a boom bap harder than a DJ Premier drum snare. “You either build or destroy, where you come from?” he spits over the sweeping number. “The Magnolia Projects in the 3rd Ward slum, hmm/ It’s quite amazing that you rhyme how you do/ And how you shine like you grew up in a shrine in Peru.” The underground anthem resonated beyond the blogs, rattling mainstream radio to the point that DJ Enuff penned a blog on his site about wanting to play the record on New York’s Hot 97 in spite of the track’s ethereal backpack appeal. From then on, the MC — with his esoteric storytelling and heart-stinging lines — was hailed as the second coming of Nas. Diddy co-signed his appeal by riding shotgun on Jay’s “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” And Electronica also joined forces with Talib Kweli, Mos Def and J.Cole for the thumping “Just Begun.” While fellow 2010 breakouts like Wiz Khalifa may have a bigger online base, and 25-year-old J. Cole may have the benefit of even more years ahead to develop and build a career, it’s Jay Electronica who has the presence, sculpted pedigree and once-in-a-generation skill set to make an impact — right now. That was never more evident then last month when the Erykah Badu-loving MC (he has a child with the singer) spurned offers from Diddy and several labels to ink a deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation . “It’s obvious that he really genuinely loves it and is a student of rap and the game,” Jay-Z told MTV News of his latest signee . “You can’t write those sort of songs or come to that sort of conclusion without having a deep love for what you’re doing and a deep understanding and a deep drive.” The nomadic MC has now plugged himself into the matrix of the music industry, where expectations for him will be tracked by bottoms lines, SoundScan sheets and Grammy voters. The wild child has grown-man responsibilities to contend with when it comes to music. The future remains uncertain, but the past 12 months have been nothing short of riveting and make Jay Electronica our 2010 Fire Starter of the Year. Young Buck Gets Back On His Grind With New ‘Street Album’

Ex-G-Unit MC talks to Mixtape Daily about the Drumma Boy-produced Back on My Buck Sh–, Vol. 2. By Rahman Dukes, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Drumma Boy and Young Buck Photo: MTV News Main Pick Street King : Young Buck Holding It Down For : Memphis Mixtape : Back on My Buck Sh–, Vol. 2 Real Spit : Young Buck doesn’t concern himself with media reports detailing his troubles with the tax man or contractual disputes with G-Unit pitbull 50 Cent. Instead, the Tennessee native deals with his issues in the booth. And on the Drumma Boy-helmed Back on My Buck Sh–, Vol. 2, street-album fans will get some of Buck’s most heartfelt rhymes yet. “I just been going in the booth and giving it to you,” the ex-G-Unit MC told Mixtape Daily when we met up at the Drumma Boy compound. “Life is real like that, ya’ll know that. … But I’m good, my music speaks for itself … I’m speaking through the music.” Buck said his latest sessions with Drumma happened naturally. “Honestly, he’ll tell you man, I just walked in the booth and gave it to the world exactly how it is, and that’s how I really been doing a lot of my music lately.” The producer said fans can expect Buck stray from his usual fare on B.O.M.B. S. 2. (Drumma Boy was actually doing double duty during the Mixtape Daily interview, tending to another Memphis heavyweight, 8Ball, who was going through tracks.) “The sound of the project is basically a whole mix, it’s like a gumbo,” Drumma explained. “You gon’ hear a little bit of rock influence, you gon’ hear a little bit of soul influence, a little bit of Marvin Gaye influence, with the “AM/FM” — shout-out to Lupe, coming through, you know, blazing us.” He continued, “I can’t say too much. You gotta listen to it and really capture the moment.” Joint to Check For :

DJ Scoob Doo Taking Break From Lil Wayne To Travel To Africa

‘Nino Brown’ director tells Mixtape Daily he’ll shoot Wayne’s ‘Bill Gates’ video when he gets back. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Leon Prime Celebrity Favorites: DJ Scoob Doo Scoob Doo might be best known for directing Lil Wayne music videos and as the man behind the “Nino Brown” DVD series featuring Tunechi, but the New Jersey native got his start behind the wheels of steel. Now, as a result of his growing popularity, Scoob’s taking his talents overseas. “I’m going to South Africa,” he told us over the phone on Tuesday. Scoob will be out there for the rest of the week and is scheduled to host and DJ a few parties while he’s in town. The breakthrough journey (he’s never visited the continent before) almost didn’t happen, though. Since Lil Wayne was sprung from Rikers Island last month, the MC has been back at work, recording music, shooting material for the next “Nino Brown” DVD and readying a video for the next track from I Am Not a Human Being. And that means Scoob has been busy documenting the process — around the clock. “We’ve been working nonstop on our personal endeavors and projects, and it’s a situation where it’s bigger than life right now as far as my work goes,” Scoob explained. “I was at a crossroads deciding if I was gonna go to Africa or was I gonna stay. So I had a conversation with Tunechi, and Tunechi understood that I’m going away for a couple of days, but when I get back we’re gonna be full up and running, picking up wherever we left off. And when I get back, just to put things in perspective, when I get back, we’re gonna shoot a professional video for ‘Bill Gates’ and it’s gonna be historic.” During his trip, Scoob plans turn the camera around on himself and shoot scenes from the events. “I always wanted to go and it’s one of those places you always wanna go,” he said. “But it’s so, and excuse my language, it’s so f—ing awesome that I get to go and I am getting paid to go and I’m doing what I love to do. So it’s like it’s a bonus. And I’m kind of scoping the scene ’cause a lot of people that I work with always wanted to go but were scared to take that trip. So I’m actually gonna scope it out and make sure that it’s good and everything. It’s going to be a frequent opportunity for all of my clients and partners as far as this business goes.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Fred The Godson’s Armegeddon Goes For ‘Golden Years Of Hip-Hop’

‘It’s really a punchline to the end of all wack tracks that’s out there now,’ Bronx MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Fred the Godson Photo: MTV News Main Pick Street King : Fred the Godson Holding It Down For : The BX Mixtape : Armegeddon Real Spit : To hear Fred the Godson’s doctor explain it, his talent is a blessing. In fact, that’s how the Bronx bomber got his MC name. The hefty rhyme-spitter suffers from a number of ailments, including high blood pressure, kidney failure, asthma and diabetes. So when he told his doc he would be performing at a talent show a few years back, she thought it wasn’t such a good idea. ” ‘Listen,’ ” he recalls telling his medical practitioner. ” ‘I been practicing, and for some reason when I’m practicing, the ailments don’t really bother me.’ She didn’t believe me, so she asked to come to the show. I gave her a flyer and a ticket and said, ‘Come through.’ I didn’t think she would, but she came.” Fred rocked out, and his doctor was so impressed, she ran up to him right after the show. “She was like, ‘That’s crazy. I can’t believe you went through it. It’s like you’re God’s son. It’s like God was looking over you,’ ” he explained. “So I just kept it: Fred the Godson.” The crafty lyricist’s foes might need the Lord’s blessing after listening to his debut mixtape, Armegeddon . The title is a nod to sub-par rhymers. “It’s really a punchline to the end of all wack tracks that’s out there now,” he said. “I’m trying to bring it back to Biggie, the Reasonable Doubt s, Illmatic s, Big Puns. I think it’s a mixture of all those things together. I’m really trying to pattern my material after those great albums of the ’90s. “I really aim for back then,” Fred added. “The golden years of hip-hop.” Joints to Check For

Lil Wayne Collaborators Partners-N-Crime Building Buzz Beyond Bayou

New Orleans duo talk to Mixtape Daily about linking up with Lil Wayne, YMCMB crew as they prep Legendary LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Partners In Crime Photo: NOLA Fire Starter: Partners-N-Crime OK, so these guys might not exactly be new jacks, but Partners-N-Crime are still on the come up. After building an extensive catalog and collaborations with the likes of Lil Wayne, the New Orleans duo are expanding their fanbase. Riding the wave of their new banger “Finally Could Breathe,” featuring Young Money president Mack Maine, Kango Slim and Mista Meana are currently hard at work on their 10th project, Legendary, set to drop next year. It’s an effort they once would have been hard pressed to put together, when their camps warring with each other years ago. “When we were coming up in the game, Wayne was a little bit younger than us,” Slim told Mixtape Daily. “We were on a label at the time called Big Boy and he was with Cash Money Records. And to be honest, both of the labels had a rivalry thing going on. Once Cash Money blew, Big Boy continued to do their thing. They housed Mystikal, Fiend, us, and a couple more artists. At one time, we never looked eye to eye, but as we grew older things began to change.” Wayne helped break the ice when he reached out to the underground vets a couple of years ago offering to record a track together. (The group was also, at one point, signed to former Cash Money member Juvenile’s label.) Partners-N-Crime sent Weezy something they were working on, a rockish number called “We Do What We Want To,” which eventually landed on their last set, We Are Legend. The superstar MC liked what he heard and contributed a verse. (“This was a little bit before he got into the same type of music with Rebirth, ” Meana recalled.) The result was a raucous anthem that helped to push PNC beyond their bayou borders. Before finishing up their Legendary collection, the group is next scheduled to perform at BAM’s 2010 Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Red Hot + New Orleans lineup. Shawty Lo Keeps ATL Projects Alive With Mixtape, Film, Book

‘It’s about my life when I was coming up in Bankhead, when I didn’t have nothing,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and FLX Smith Shawty Lo Photo: Shawty Lo Monday’s Main Pick Street King : Shawty Lo Holding It Down For : Bankhead Mixtape : Bowen Homes Carlos Real Spit : Shawty Lo will continue to salute his projects until the day he goes to that upper room. With his projects torn down by the city of Atlanta, Lo keeps the memory alive on his new mixtape, Bowen Homes Carlos. “It’s the good, the bad and the ugly,” Shawty said about the Bowen projects being demolished. “Good thing is, there was a lot of murders going on in Bowen Homes. The crime rate was high. It’s bad for the people who lived there and are unfortunate and do not have anything. There were no extra bills. Zero rent. Now they gotta get out there and try to make it. It’s getting harder and harder these days.” Lo’s BH movement is more than music. He’s coming out with a documentary, a fragrance and a writing project. “What makes this mixtape special, I got a DVD that comes with it. It’s called ‘Bowen Homes Carlos’ also. So it’s a visual that comes with this mix CD. I got a new cologne, Lo Seduction. It’s for the fellas, but it could go unisex. I got the book ‘BHC.’ It’s about my life when I was coming up in Bankhead, when I didn’t have nothing, when I was unfortunate. My mother was on drugs, my daddy was elsewhere. I was raised by my grandmother. When she passed to cancer, that put me in the streets. I turned a negative into a positive. There’s only one judge, and that’s the man above. It feels good to be here. I must’ve done something right.” Joints to Check For

Snoop Dogg, DPGC Reminisce About Doggystyle Before Sequel

‘ Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again,’ Snoop tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Snoop Dogg Photo: Getty Images Cornerstone Credentials: Snoop Dogg and the DPGC A few days ago, Snoop Dogg announced that his next LP will be Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. And while the 1515 Boys can’t claim 100 percent responsibility for Don Kinging the situation, we’ll take a little credit. A couple of weeks ago, during Rock the Bells rehearsals, the big homie Sway put it in the air while talking to Snoop, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, RBX and Warren G. When Sway asked Snoop if having his crew back together for the concerts meant getting everyone back on one album again, the Dogg said: “Nothing can stop that. The rebirth! It’s done. We’re gonna try to be out before Detox so we can help Dr. Dre speed up the process.” Having the old gang in tow sparked plenty of memories for Snoop about the original album, his debut solo classic. “The Chronic album, we felt that was our album,” Snoop thought back. “We gave Dr. Dre our full attention and our soul and devotion. Everything we wanted to say, we said. He gave us the platform to do that. So we felt that was our album. Then when Doggystyle came out, we felt like it was our record again. ‘We get to do it with Snoop and he’s gonna really involve us. He’s not gonna be like Dr. Dre and be such a perfectionist. Snoop’s gonna bring us all in the studio and Dre is gonna fine-tune it and make it sound like how it’s supposed to sound.’ A lot of records didn’t sound like they sound on the album in the beginning. Warren G brought a lot of tracks to the table that were halfway right. Dre made ’em all the way right. Same with Daz, same with other producers. … Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again. We followed that up with Tha Dogg Pound album and ‘Murder Was the Case’ soundtrack.” Snoop officially announced Swizz Beatz as a producer on the album, and the way the love was flowing with Dogg and his musical family, we’re already anticipating the DPGC as guests, just like the old days. “This is nostalgia,” Rage said. “It’s like going back to Solar Studios. Popeye’s Chicken on the corner. Eight of us sharing a three-piece meal. Smoking, drinking, fussing! Not too much fussin’. I’m beatboxing, Snoop’s rhyming. Daz rhyming. Kurupt’s rhyming. RBX. When RBX came on the set, he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m signed to Death Row.’ I was like, ‘Who said so?’ I was all defensive and sh–, like, ‘Now everybody wants to be on Death Row. Who are you?’ Little did I know.” “The battles were epic, man,” RBX offered about the siblings’ ciphers. “I used to crave that. It kept you sharp. Me watching all the old kung fu flicks, I always felt like you had to stay sharp and that was through walking through the fire. Whether it be Snoop walking through the fire and I’m judging. Kurupt walking through the fire … ” “Me, I was into eating people alive,” Kurupt jumped in. “If Dogg said get ’em, I got ’em. It’s over. Game of death.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Snoop Dogg DPGC

Chris Brown, Tyga Planning Fan Of A Fan Tour

Tyga explains success of ‘Deuces’ to Mixtape Daily : ‘The people chose the record.’ By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown and Tyga Photo: Courtesy of Young Money The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Chris Brown is in the #1 film in the country, “Takers,” and now that he’s done with Hollywood (for now), he’s going back to the lab. “Me, I’m definitely writing on other people’s projects. A lot of in-house stuff,” Brown said recently in L.A. “I got a lot of artists coming out. The single ‘Deuces’ features one of my artists K-Mac and Tyga [from Young Money]. I’m pushing forward. The movie’s out, so I’mma have fun.” “Deuces” is in the top 30 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 charts and #1 on urban radio. The record’s success is simply due to fan support. It’s part of Brown and Tyga’s Fan of a Fan mixtape and skyrocketed once the video hit virally and on MTV Jams. “That was actually Chris’ idea,” Tyga told us about putting out a visual for the song. “I thought the record was dope. I thought it was dope for us to do that video. He got to explain his situation. It connects to his fans. His fans miss that from him. “I think the people chose the record,” Tyga added. “We put the mixtape out, and we asked them: What record do you like the most? They was like, ‘Deuces.’ It was always coming up. It was growing on YouTube as well, like 100,000 views a day on YouTube. It was his idea to shoot the video. My homie Colin Tilly, he’s done all my videos. He’s done everything. All my mixtape stuff to the bigger stuff I’m doing now. He got it right. It’s what people wanna see, what they wanna hear.” Despite the overwhelming success of Fan of a Fan, Tyga said he and Chris aren’t planning an official LP, but they are hitting the road together. “I don’t think you wanna drown people too much,” Tyga said about making a full album with Brown. “We’ve been doing a lot of stuff, though. He’s on my album. We’re actually working on a tour right now. A Fan of Fan Tour at the end of the year. It’ll be dope.” Tyga has an album coming out soon; it doesn’t have a release date yet. But his next mixtape, Well Done, will hit within the next couple of weeks. It’s going to be a Gangsta Grillz edition. “I feel like I had to deal with [DJ] Drama. He reminded of Wayne, when he did Dedication with him,” Tyga explained. “[Wayne] was going in on every beat. All the mixtapes I’ve been dropping, they’re close to albums. They’re more songs. They have more content. This one, I wanted to rap on everybody’s beat and murder every beat that’s out. It’s fun to do that. It’s easy. I can knock that out real fast. I think Drama is dope when you wanna link up and murder beats like that.” Some of the tracks Tyga is pilfering are Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
