Dr. Frank Ryan’s Fatal Crash Reignites Texting-While-Driving Debate

‘It has stopped being an oddity when we hear that someone was texting and has a wreck,’ an emergency physician tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Dr. Frank Ryan Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In a case of multitasking gone horribly wrong, plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan was apparently sending out a tweet before his car fell off a cliff Monday. The surgeon, best known for performing several surgeries on “The Hills” starlet Heidi Montag, was apparently typing about his border collie before his Jeep Wrangler plummeted from Malibu’s Pacific Coast Highway. The accident demonstrates the very real danger of texting or tweeting while driving, an activity that has reportedly spiked in recent years. “I hear, almost daily, accounts of people who are injured while texting,” said Dr. Angela Gardner, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians . Gardner, who is also an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, told MTV News that sometimes, linking an accident to texting is difficult if the phone is destroyed or tossed from the scene of the incident. However, Gardner did say texting-related accidents are becoming commonplace. “[There is] definitely an uptick and a noticeable one,” she said. “It has stopped being an oddity when we hear that someone was texting and has a wreck. Now it’s more of a fairly common occurrence.” While sending out a status update during a leisurely drive may seem innocuous, Gardner said it only takes a moment for distracted drivers to become vulnerable. “There’s two things [that can lead to accidents]: The obvious one is that one hand is off the wheel if you’re holding a phone. The other thing is that, as fast or as good as you are at texting, it still takes that microsecond of looking away from the road, and that microsecond is when accidents occur,” Gardner said. “The theory is that people look away for a minute, and then they realize the car is going off the road, and they jerk the car back. It’s the compensation movement that can cause a car to roll over.” Several states have laws in place curtailing cell phone use while driving, and many, including, where Ryan died, have outright bans on texting while on the road. A 2009 study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute revealed that truck drivers were more than 20 times as likely to be involved in a crash while texting. The study indicated that sending messages in particular was significantly more dangerous than dialing or talking on the phone. “People don’t realize — and it’s not just young people, it’s everyone with a cell phone — that moment that you look away from your phone is the moment it could take to have a wreck,” Gardner said. Gardner noted that people often have an “irresistible urge” to respond to a text or tweet but offered a straightforward suggestion for drivers who feel tempted to type while still on the road. “My advice is put the phone away,” Gardner said. “Put it in your pocket, put it in your purse. Put it away until you’re done with your trip.”

Jay Electronica Says Act I Sequel Will Be ‘Finished Soon’

MC wants to drop heavily anticipated follow-up to Eternal Sunshine mixtape on September 19, his birthday. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay Electronica Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Jay Electronica is on what can best be described as a world tour. Stationed now in London after making stops in Egypt and Jordan, the New Orleans rapper says he’s overseas both out of curiosity and for work purposes. Electronica is wrapping up Act II, the follow-up to his much-heralded mixtape Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge). His next tape will feature the breakout track “Exhibit C” and mark the first offering from the nomadic MC since he premiered the Just Blaze-produced single earlier this year on Eminem’s SiriusXM satellite radio station, Shade 45. “It’s gonna be finished soon,” Jay Elect told the UK’s DJ Semtex about Act II during a recent interview . “I want to release it on my birthday, that’s September 19, and I’m pushing toward that.” Electronica has raised his profile over the past year or so, from live tweeting the birth of his and Erykah Badu’s child to delivering stellar live shows. He’s also dropped a select sampling of bangers, including “The Birth of Christopher Wallace.” In addition to “Exhibit C,” “Dear Moleskin” is expected to be featured on Act II, as well as collaborations with Nas; production duties are shared by Just Blaze, Dilla, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Mr. Porter and the rapper himself. “I never got a moment where I feel I made it, victory, completion,” Jay told Mixtape Daily back in February. “I’ve had moments of excitement. I can’t believe people are responding like this. It’s an overwhelming thing — even though it’s something you planned for, it’s a surprise.” Are you looking forward to Jay Electronica’s next mixtape? Idris Elba Working On ‘Takers’ Mixtape, Praises Co-Stars T.I., Chris Brown

‘I’m gonna get superstar records on there,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of tape due same day as August 27 flick. By Shaheem Reid Idris Elba Photo: Getty Images The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Idris Elba is a big superstar, much deserving of all of the accolades, but don’t act like we didn’t put you up on his backstory as a DJ more than half a decade ago. When he’s not filming box-office blockbusters like “Obsessed” and this month’s upcoming “Takers,” he’s still getting it in behind the wheels of steel. Elba lays it down at the club during live sets and he’s still entrenched in the mixtape scene. In fact, he’s working on a major project to complement his latest film. “Takers mixtape; the film comes out on the 27th. I’m gonna put the tape out the same day as the film,” Idris told Mixtape Daily when we caught up with him over the weekend in Los Angeles. Elba, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Jay Hernandez were all in the City of Angels doing press for the thriller. “I’m gonna get superstar records on there, some exclusives,” Elba continued. “But I’m also trying to get some people that follow me on Twitter, people that have been following and supporting ‘Takers’ to submit a couple records on the mixtape. Hopefully, it’ll be on Mixtape [Daily]. You can review the jam for me. I’ll throw a couple of my own songs on the jam, too — so be careful.” In the film, Elba plays Gordon Cozier, the leader of a team of highly educated, highly skilled, high-life-loving bank robbers. And yes, they play for high stakes. Gordon has just a few days to mastermind a seemingly impossible armored-car heist that would net the group tens of millions of dollars. At the same time, Gordon has family strife to confront: His sister leaves a drug rehab facility early and, almost immediately, falls off the wagon. “The truck scene. That truck thing, very, very exciting and unique,” Elba said of his favorite stunt in the film. As for his music-making co-stars, Grammy winners T.I. and Chris Brown, the British-born actor said he was impressed with their abilities as thespians. “They’re performers, number one,” Elba assessed. “And in this film, we’re being charismatic bad boys. That’s what going on. Chris and T.I., they got plenty of that.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Slick Pulla Is ‘Focused On The Greenbacks,’ Not Wacka Flocka Flame

After dropping his Slicktionary, Atlanta CTE member looks toward the future with Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Slick Pulla Photo: Black Bill Gates This Week’s Main Pick Street King : Slick Pulla Holding It Down For : CTE/USDA Mixtape : Slicktionary Real Spit : Welcome home to CTE’s own Slick Pulla. The USDA member came home in early January after spending two and half years in jail. He did three months of work release and three months of house arrest with a leg monitor. Now, he can now move more freely for the remainder of his four-year parole. The leg monitor is off and he’s ready to start touring. “It wasn’t no problems with the law,” Slick said in his Atlanta studio. “It was a possession of firearms bid due to certain circumstances. Due to a certain lifestyle, you feel that’s how you got to move. Unfortunately, I already had an ‘F’ on my report card. That’s not how the powers that be felt. I sat down. … When you go in jail, you can do two things: You can come out dumber and go back; or come out smarter and go harder for your family and loved ones. That’s pretty much the gist on that.” Obviously, Pulla is doing the latter. He just recently released his first post-prison work, a mixtape called Slicktionary, hosted by the Black Bill Gates, and is already well into recording the follow-up. Besides his music, Slick has maintained a relatively low profile — that is, except for the reports that his crew and Waka Flocka’s entourage got into a scuffle at ATL clothing epicenter Walters in March. The altercation led to gunshots, but no one was arrested. Pulla refutes talk of his involvement. “Slick’s name was in some sh–. That’s all that was,” he said. As for the “Hard in Da Paint” rapper, Pulla says the only thing on his radar right now is money. “At this present time, I’m focused on the greenbacks, the frog skin,” he said. “I got tunnel vision. I’m in a zone right now. I’m looking straight ahead. All that stuff on the left and right side, I’m not even worried about it.” Slick is looking into acting and the GA OG also just launched “Slick Prints,” his own brand of T-shirts. Joints to Check For: “Black Ice (The Preface).” “The reason I chose the beat is because how I do the music — I don’t know how anybody else does the music — it takes me back to a certain time in my life,” Pulla said. “When [Goodie Mob’s] Still Standing CD came out, I wasn’t even in the music then. I was a fan of the music. Goodie Mob, the whole Dungeon family, they set the blueprint for a lot of what’s going on today. That beat right there [‘Black Ice (Sky High)’], it brought all them times back.” “Hood Rich Freestyle.” “I did the Eminem track [‘Lose Yourself’] ’cause one day I was in the halfway house and I seen the video,” Slick recalled. “It was on ‘106 and Park’ for the ‘Throwback of the Day.’ How the beat climaxed! My homeboy was like, ‘You need to snatch that up.’ ” “On Da Radar.” “That’s just a street anthem,” he explained. “If you a hustler or about your money or whatever you do for a sack, you can relate to it. The hook goes ‘I love money/ Broke ain’t on my radar.’ I love money, I’m trying to get it up.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Game’s Brake Lights Tape Is ‘Like A Real Album,’ DJ Skee Says

‘This time around, it’s a lot higher [quality],’ Skee tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid DJ Skee Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive If you’ve been following the Game’s new Twitter page, you’ll see that his fans have given resounding kudos to his new mixtape, Brake Lights. The project was produced by Cool & Dre and hosted by DJ Skee and was released at midnight Tuesday online. “Reason we named it Brake Lights is because it’s something you don’t see if you’re following us often — we don’t stop,” Skee said from his SkeeTV headquarters. “We just had to talk about it. Plus we just did The R.E.D. Album with Game. The biggest difference between this and The Red Room [mixtape] is, I think, the quality of records. This time around, it’s a lot higher. We got some crazy features, more original stuff. It’s not really any freestyles over other people’s beats. It’s all original music. So it’s really like a real album. We’re going back to those classic Game/ DJ Skee street-album days. It’s gonna be pretty crazy.” Included on the tape is “Street Riders,” on which guest MC Nas references Pharrell Williams by name and throws some subliminals at 50 Cent. “I showed n—as their first Bentley/ How the f— I window shop?” he raps. “We’ve actually had it done forever,” Skee said. “It was actually supposed to be on the Doctor’s Advocate album. It didn’t make it for one reason or another. There’s been a bunch of different reincarnations of the song. … I actually have eight different versions of the song. Game, he went back in. He said, ‘It’s time to do it.’ Cool & Dre did the beat. So we was like, ‘Let’s throw it on the mixtape. It’s probably never going to come out other than that.’ I played a snippet of it on the radio years ago, and fans have been going crazy since then. We threw that on. Game did two new verses. He wanted to make it more relevant for today. You have a crazy Nas verse. Akon kills the hook. It’s one of the craziest, darkest Cool & Dre beats. It’s one of my favorite Game records ever. So it’s finally out, Brake Lights, it’s official.” The Compton star brings in another West Coast giant on “Trading Places.” “It’s the second song on the mixtape,” Skee described. “The beat, when I heard it, it just sounded like something different. Game and Snoop Dogg on a record. West Coast — what more could you want?” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, Bun B

Fabolous Re-Releasing The Funeral Service 2 Mixtape As An EP

‘It started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Def Jam Midseason Salute: Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 We have to give credit where it’s due. Our segment on Fab’s mixtape has been one of the most applauded productions we’ve put together this year. Shot on location at Benta’s Funeral Home (shout to b-day girl Whitney!), Loso previewed what would be a front-runner for Mixtape of the Year. The Brooklyn native’s street CD was so hot, Def Jam stepped in and told him it was time to make some money off it. Fab is pulling a Drake and re-releasing the tape as an EP, much like Drizzy did with So Far Gone in ’09. “It’s really incredible how people will connect with the work,” Fab said. “I think we put a lot of work into it, with the whole funeral theme. We didn’t just say it and you had to daydream it. We went into the funeral homes. We picked caskets out for the competition. Def Jam, this summer, is gonna put the mixtape out as an EP. So I did about four new songs, put ’em with some of the original joints from the mixtape. We got more viral videos coming. We just gonna keep it going and let it end as the classic it is. A lot of people saying it’s a classic, one of the, if not the best mixtape of 2010. It’s crazy to me, because it started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work. Def Jam even came in and said, ‘Whoa, we gotta get a piece.’ It’s a good thing, man. ” ‘Body Ya’ definitely did its thing,” he added about one of the standout cuts from the mixtape. “It got added to Hot 97 and Power 105.1. ‘Body Ya’ grew its own legs. The mixtape itself grew its own legs. People are still asking about it. In this fast-paced music industry, music and mixtapes don’t have that much longevity. You might listen to it for a month, somebody else drop they joint and you listening to it the next month. But No Competition 2, people are still listening to it , still on Twitter talking about it. It’s crazy.” Loso is keeping his production to new guys on the EP. “I worked with Sonaro, a producer who just signed to Street Family. He did ‘Body Ya.’ I worked with the guy who did [Rick Ross’] ‘Blowin’ Money Fast,’ Lex Luger. He did a song for me called ‘Lights Out.’ The one with Sonaro is called ‘Body Count.’ I did one more with Ryan Leslie called ‘You Be Killin’ Them.’ It’s a little bit more for the females but keeping with the theme. I think when people hear these three joints, they gonna be like, ‘He’s still giving us great music, and it’s just a mixtape, just an EP.’ And from here, I’m working on the album.” Fab’s album is Loso’s Way 2. Rick Ross Tells The Story Behind Drake’s Extended ‘Aston Martin Music’

Ross tells Mixtape Daily we might see the unofficial track on a Teflon Don re-release. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Rick Ross’ Teflon Don LP came out Tuesday (July 20), and by now, if you’ve been listening to the radio and the mixtapes, you’ve already heard the extended version of “Aston Martin Music,” a highlight of the project. The track features Chrisette Michele and Drake sharing hook duties. On the extended version, which is not on the album, Drake adds a rap verse. Ross stopped by our 1515 headquarters on Monday to explain Drizzy’s extra vocals. “It boils down to me having the idea, the concept,” Ross said. “Shout-out to J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I got the production from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. I wanted to do something else, two-seater music. That’s what I like to call it when it’s personal music for you and that special female that’s riding shotgun in a two-seater. Chrisette Michele, she was on ‘Mafia Music 2.’ She came to Miami to film the video. I got her in the studio to do the first half of this idea I had, which is ‘Aston Martin Music.’ She was like, ‘What you mean just do half of the chorus?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, just do half. I’mma save the other half.’ ” Trusting Ross’ direction, the singer got in and laid the vocals we hear today: “Riding to the music, this is how we do it/ All night/ Racing down the freeway/ Just me and my baby/ In our ride.” “She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics,” Ross continued of Michele’s session for “Aston Martin.” “It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I’m sitting there like, ‘Wow. All right, all right.’ At that point, I didn’t know who was gonna sing the second half.” The Bawse said listening to Drake’s new album, in his leisure time, inspired him to make that call to his friend from Toronto. “I sent it to the homie,” the Miami rap lord described. “He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, ‘I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I’mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, ‘I’m finnin’ to go in the studio, Ross. I’mma need to get on that.’ ” A version of the song with just an extended chorus and Drake’s verse called “Paris Morton Music” came out shortly after “Aston Martin Music” leaked to the Net almost two weeks ago. “I talk slicker than a pimp from Augusta,” Drake raps on the track. Then, one of Ross’ engineers mixed Drake’s verse and extended chorus with the album version of “AMM,” and that song has lived on the Net and mixtapes ever since. It’s also getting play on the radio. Ross said he has no problems with an unofficial extended version of “AMM” being out. He might even include it on a repackaging of Teflon Don in the future. “It’s only right,” Ross said. “I got on [Drake’s] first single [‘Find Your Love’]. He even put a twist on the title after some sexy ladies, I believe. It made it feel good. That’s what that music is about. On that re-release, that deluxe packaging, that’s what you may get. You never know.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Jay Electronica Reveals How ‘Ghost Of Christopher Wallace’ Came To Life

‘I called Puff like, ‘I’mma do this,’ ‘ he tells Mixtape Daily of getting Diddy involved. By Shaheem Reid Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica said there’s no need for speculation: He is a part of the ever-expanding Dream Team super clique of hip-hop luminaries, which includes DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes and Diddy. Jay Elect recently released footage to the Internet, in which we get to see him and Diddy recording the underground banger “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” “I’m blessed, man,” Jay told us in his hometown of New Orleans a couple of weeks ago. “I had records with Just Blaze, records with Puff. That record came from Twitter. I was on Twitter asking for beats through iChat. Quincy Tones [who produced ‘Wallace’] sent the beat. I was sitting on that one line: ‘The game ain’t been the same since B.I.G. died/ And Wu swarmed on New York from out that beehive.’ I had been sitting on that for two weeks. I didn’t do nothing with it. Then I took a swim on it. I called Puff like, ‘I’mma do this.’ He said, ‘Come to the studio right now. I need to get on that.’ It was a crazy night. A lot of energy.” As you’ve heard, Jay spits audio fury for a little over two minutes, then Diddy takes over the track, talking greasy for the remaining four and a half minutes. “I told him to,” Electronica explained. “That’s the Puff I love. That’s the Puff I wanna hear. I grew up listening to Biggie records and all these other records. I hear both sides of the coin; some people like it, some people don’t. He went long. We was supposed to go in the studio the next day with the engineer and only uses pieces. But I told him, ‘Leave it all the way in.’ I wanted it like that. A lot of times when I leave skits on there, it serves the same purpose. It’s keeping the atmosphere and the energy.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
