Nas Says Raekwon Collabo Is ‘Likely’ After Missing Out On Last Album

‘I definitely wish I was on that piece,’ Nas tells Mixtape Daily of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. 2. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Message to Green Lantern: Homie, make it happen! One of the great DJs in the game is on the road with Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the Distant Relatives Tour, and we’re all hoping Green can convince Nas to do another mixtape . “Perhaps,” Nas said with a grin. “Green is that dude. I’m always knocking Green Lantern mixtapes.” Nas and Damian Marley’s Distant Relatives joint LP came out Tuesday (May 18). Nas also appears on Capone-N-Noreaga’s independent July 13 album, The War Report 2. Although Nas didn’t specifically record rhymes for the album, he appears on a track called “With Me.” Nore told us the Nas vocals were taken from an old studio session he had in the vault. “It’s all good,” Nas said about appearing on the album. “That’s a team outta Queens. It’s all good.” What about C-N-N’s business partner Raekwon? Nas was conspicuously absent on the Chef’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … Pt. II, and he regrets it. Maybe he’ll get on the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder’s upcoming Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang album. “It’s been no discussions,” Nas said about appearing on Rae’s new project. “You know how the music game is. Everybody is out there grindin’, making music. But his last album was classic. I definitely wish I was on that piece. So yeah, something in the future is definitely likely. That’ll be good.” Finally, what’s good with a new Nas solo LP? “I talked to a lot of people I really like about my next project. But there’s no one sitting there doing my album right now that I could speak of,” he said. “This record here [ Distant Relatives ], I think it’s gonna push me and D in our solo projects. I think any record we do, it’s gotta live up to this record. It’s gotta be as good or better. We set the standard with this album. I’m just excited about this record right now.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Diggy Simmons Isn’t Making ‘Bubblegum, Kiddie-Bop’ Rap

‘I’m really doing me,’ Diggy tells Mixtape Daily of trailblazing dad Rev Run and Uncle Russell Simmons. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Diggy Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Diggy Simmons Daniel “Diggy” Simmons has his legendary pop’s brash but lovable quality — and it’s most apparent when Rev Run’s son is rapping. “The son of a king, so why would I ever bow down?” he asks on his Internet-famous freestyle “Made You Look (Flow Stoopid).” The young MC, who hasn’t been 15 years old for even four months yet, now has a record deal under his belt and a following on the Net, thanks to freestyles like the aforementioned “Made You Look” and “Diggy What, Diggy Who?!” Not to mention, a much talked-about blog titled “Life of a Jet Setter: The Young Tastemakers Guide” and, of course, a starring role the Simmons family reality-TV series “Run’s House” on MTV. Young Simmons has obviously been around hip-hop all his life. His older brother JoJo raps, Dad is recognized as one of the greatest MCs ever, and his uncle Russell is universally hailed as one of hip-hop’s godfathers. But Diggy doesn’t flinch when he considers the weight of that legacy. “I get a lot of people [asking me about that] in interviews as well,” he said. “They’re like, ‘Do you feel the pressure to uphold the legacy?’ I’m just like, ‘At the end of the day, I know who they are. But I’m really doing me.’ It’s like, I’m not feeling too much pressure, and I like it better that way. And I’ll make it for myself,” added Simmons, who described his upbringing as “normal.” “[Music] was really something I picked up and did on my own,” Diggy explained of getting on the mic for the first time. “I was writing for a while, doing my thing. I was doing joints off my MacBook on GarageBand. I sent it to my boys through iChat. They’d knock a verse out. It was done like that. I released my first track, got a cool buzz around it, and I released some tracks prior to the mixtape [ First Flight ]. That’s when I started pushing the tape. Once I pushed the tape, a lot of people were aware that I was rapping. Since the ‘Made You Look’ freestyle, and a lot of people knowing I signed to Atlantic, now many people know.” Not long after Diggy dropped the “Made You Look” freestyle, he got kudos from Kanye West . And most recently, the guy whose beat he jacked for the freestyle, Nas, gave him props as well. “I couldn’t believe it,” Nas told Vibe, discussing his impressions of the teen. “Run is the king of rap, and for him to have a son who’s that nice? You don’t even think sh– like that happens. I don’t think we’ve seen that in hip-hop yet — he’s nice, and his father’s the king? That’s historic, bro. That sh– is incredible. That little dude is nice.” And Diggy shouldn’t be confused with some other rappers in his demographic. He’s actually winning over fans with his rapid flow, as well as his wordplay. “That’s something I really focus on, because a lot of my inspiration in music, they vary, from Lupe [Fiasco] to A Tribe Called Quest,” said Diggy, who also included Jay-Z and Nas among his favorites. “I love Mos Def. Real lyrical dudes in the game, that’s what I focus on. A lot of the time when you listen to music, you have no focus on what you listen to. “I’m just letting people hear my music now,” Diggy said. “A lot of people are like, ‘Diggy raps? Ah, OK.’ Before they even hear it, they don’t even wanna hear it. They think it’s gonna be some bubblegum, kiddie-bop type of hip-hop. That’s not even the case.” Simmons said he’s working on new material that will show his elevation as a wordsmith, but he’s not yet sure if another mixtape will come before his debut album. Dame Dash Contemplates Bringing Diplomats Back To Roc-A-Fella

With Cam’ron and Jim Jones’ recent fence-mending, Dash says it could be great under the right circumstances. By Shaheem Reid Dame Dash Photo: MTV News In Mixtape Daily on Monday, Dame Dash announced that he’s relaunching Roc-A-Fella Records , with his first release being Curren$y’s Pilot Talk which is due June 15. Dash also has plans to put out Ski Beatz 24-Hour Karate School mixtape on the label as well. But what about bringing back a team that was affiliated with the Roc in their prime? Now that Cam’ron and Jim Jones are back on speaking terms and planning to release music together, would Dash bring the Diplomats back to Roc-A-Fella? “Um, under the right circumstances,” Dash answered. “As long as everyone is happy, as long as the quality of living is never compromised, as long as everyone is on the same sheet of paper — of course. It’d be great. Anything is great under the right circumstances but a dream could become a nightmare when everyone doesn’t have the same agendas. That’s just a general statement.” Dash said that with Jim and Cam reuniting — at least personally, so far — the duo have set a great example for the music industry. He suggested that that maybe he and Jay-Z should have followed a similar route. “I’m more happy than anything that they’re friends — that they were able to salvage their friendship, if that’s the case,” Dame said. “I think they’re better than me for that: being smart enough and humble enough to apologize to each other and move forward. I really do hope that where I failed to be the right example, that they can be that. You always want the people ahead of you to do better than you anyway. For that, I gotta give them props for being men above anything.” Related Artists The Diplomats Dame Dash

Cam’ron Ready To Make A ‘Classic’ Mixtape With DJ Holiday

‘I could do a mixtape in three hours,’ Cam tells the DJ, in Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts DJ Holiday Photo: Aphiliates The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Cam’ron has been a busy man lately. Besides reconciling with Jim Jones and announcing the possible reunion of the Diplomats, he made a surprise appearance at Converse’s Band of Ballers tournament as both “assistant coach” and basketball player, helping the Jones Family squad secure their second consecutive title. Cam’s also preparing for the third release in his and DJ Drama’s mixtape series, Boss of all Bosses 2.5. MTV News caught up with Cam over the weekend at the Atlanta tourney, where we also spoke to DJ Holiday, and it seems everybody wants a piece of KFC. “Me and Cam need to do something … a Holiday Season or something. I know you know the brand,” the DJ said, referring to his popular mixtape series. “I could do a mixtape in three hours,” Cam challenged. “Let’s stop talking and do it.” “I can block out about four hours, and we knock out a Holiday Season and make a classic,” Holiday said. “I know you make mixtapes with everybody, but when you do one with the kid, it’s a little different experience.” The “killa season”-meets-“holiday season” collaboration was a no-brainer, said Cam, ready to cement plans. But first, Holiday said, he had some other projects in the works, including the upcoming release of Waka Flocka Flame’s latest mixtape, tentatively titled Flockaveli, which he described as crazy fighting music. And with Gucci Mane’s release from jail a little more than a week away, Holiday said he and Gucc would be preparing a follow-up mixtape: Writing’s on the Wall 2: The Appeal. “I just dropped that [Gucci Mane mixtape] Burrprint HD. It’s in stores right now. We did 20,000 first week; #1 on iTunes. At the end of the day, we finnin’ to make a movie,” Holiday said. Gucci “gets home in probably about 10 days, so you already know we taking over, 10 days. Writing’s on the Wall 2: The Appeal coming soon. I’m trying to win, man.” Should Cam collaborate with DJ Holiday or stay focused on a possible Diplomats album? Let us know in the comments! Damon Dash Resurrects Roc-A-Fella To Start A ‘Positive Movement’

Re-launched label’s first release will be Curren$y’s Pilot Talk, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Curren$y and Dame Dash Photo: MTV News Executive Decisions: Dame Dash When Damon Dash pulled a Roc-A-Fella chain out of his vault several months ago and presented it to Curren$y, it was just a celebration of their friendship. Now, the chain means much more. Dash is resurrecting Roc-A-Fella Records and plans to make Curren$y’s Pilot Talk the label’s first new release on June 15. “I think we just having fun, really,” said Dash, sitting in his office at DD172 next to Curren$y. “[Curren$y] inspired me to dust off the chains. We brought ’em out for kicks, just ’cause we could. Then we was like, ‘F— it, let’s put it out through Roc-A-Fella.’ It was really more something he wanted to do. Basically, ’cause we havin’ such a good time, and the opportunity’s there, we was like, ‘Why not?’ ” “What that means, what that shows me, is that dude thinks as highly of me as I do him,” Curren$y said about releasing an LP on the label Dash co-founded with Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke in the mid-1990s. “I know what’s behind that. We all know and the fans know what that represented at the height of it. The aesthetic of it.” Dash said he hadn’t been having “fun” in music since he, Jay and Biggs dissolved their partnership several years ago. But meeting and working with artists such as Curren$y and Jay Electronica who come through his DD172 facility brought the old feelings back. “The funny thing is, people don’t know that Roc-A-Fella wasn’t meant to sell records,” Dame said. “It was meant to show the respect and the honor amongst each other as friends. It was a friendship thing. That’s what people liked. It’s what made Roc-A-Fella appealing. It’s odd, because I f— with [Curren$y]. I kinda like him. When I met him, I wasn’t as familiar with his music. My nephews and Sean O’Connell put me up on him. I liked him as a friend. Then I start seeing he’s super nice with the rhymes, then I started seeing his influence. It’s similar to the way we felt back in those days. It’s working out.” The last album to come out on Roc-A-Fella was Jadakiss’ The Last Kiss in April 2009. The label had been under Jay-Z’s sole custody since the breakup of Hov, Biggs and Dash. “Def Jam or Universal bought the brand. I think the ‘beef’ [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn’t want me or Biggs to be a part of it. That’s really where it was at. Now that he doesn’t work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn’t have the right to use the name. So there’s no reason for us not to use it. It’s there, and it’s a brand that’s not being used. So I was like, ‘I’ll take it.’ It always meant something to me.” Dash said he and Curren$y are pushing a positive message about friendship and evolution. “It’s a way more positive movement,” he added about the label’s new incarnation. “It’s what I wanted Roc-A-Fella, what I thought it should be 10 years after I started it.” Dash said he secured the new deal through L.A. Reid and Def Jam, which will serve as a distributor for his records. After Curren$y’s album, the next project coming off Roc-A-Fella will be Ski Beatz’s 24 Hour Karate School mixtape. Reps for Jay-Z were not reached for comment by press time. What do you think about Dame Dash bringing Roc-A-Fella back? Let us know in the comments! Jadakiss’ The Champ Is Here 3: Check Out A Preview!

‘Kiss teamed up with DJs Drama and Green Lantern for this Mayweather-Mosley-themed mixtape — a Mixtape Daily special! By Shaheem Reid with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jadakiss Photo: MTV News No matter what happens in the big Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley bout on Saturday, it’ll have a hard time topping the excitement on the new Champ Is Here 3 mixtape by Jadakiss and DJs Drama and Green Lantern. ‘Kiss is already legendary, but the lines on this one are as immaculate as ever. “The game is all Jada’s/ Something hot drop, I get ’em in all flavors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals,” he spits. “He’s a di–, you a p—y, y’all neighbors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals/ MJ of the Pro-Tools, anti-social.” We don’t need to say much more than that! Our money is Money May and of course ‘Kiss. Shout to DJ Drama and Green Lantern who hosted this one on the tag team. It’s a “Gangsta Grillz Invasion.” This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Jadakiss, Green Lantern and DJ Drama Holding It Down For : Legendary hip-hop Mixtape Album : The Champ Is Here 3 Real Spit : As promised, the biggest event in hip-hop right now is here: Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion, The Champ Is Here 3. ‘Kiss’ collabo with Green Lantern and DJ Drama has been strategically planned to drop on the same day that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley are getting it on in the ring: tomorrow, May 1. This time around, though, Jada isn’t pushing an album (at press time he was only three or four songs deep into his next LP, Top Five, Dead or Alive ). “The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album,” Jada added. “I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that’s coming out while I’m in the kitchen.” Kiss’ mixtapes have been so dope, he’s often found himself competing with himself. “That’s another reason why it’s good to drop it before, so I won’t have that problem,” Jada laughed. “It’ll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can’t follow.” Guests on the tape include Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj — and that’s just to start it off. “We got some underground artists, some high-class artists, some of them good, down-bottom artists. It takes you all around. You definitely gonna rock out for Memorial Day, for the summer.” “There’s some surprises on this joint, even with just his features,” Lantern continued. “We never had features outside of the Lox. But we have some nice surprises.” Green and Jada have been rocking on this series since the start. They called Drama into the fold for the third. “I got the phone call one day. Green been in [Atlanta] recently, invading the airwaves, invading the city,” Drama told of his participation. “We been looking for a project to do for a couple years now. Green called and said, ‘We making the mixtape game exiting again. It’s fun. We’re moving around brands. What do you think about coming on board for this Champ Is Here 3 ? It made perfect sense. I been on my New York sh– heavy. Green is in the A, ‘Kiss being the legend he is — three very important and crucial brands in hip-hop. Stupid!” Joints To Check For : “Bang” “You know what I’m spitting already,” Jada laughed. “That’s self-explanatory. The content is just fight dialogue, workout dialogue, getting ready for the fight. What I’ll do to you before or after the fight.” “Here I Go” (featuring Yo Gotti) “Yo Gotti is poppin,” Jada said. “He’s been doing his thing for a while in the South. I feel he’s an underdog like me. He do his thing but he don’t get the props he should get. Those are the people I rock with the hardest. He don’t care, he knows what he’s doing despite what anybody might think. I respect him for that.” “It’s a problem man,” Dram concurs. “We wanted to give them something they wasn’t expecting and haven’t heard. The beat on ‘Here I Go,’ it felt right. Mystikal is home. We used his beat.” “Who Shot Ya?” “Rest in peace B.I.G. Big shout to Nasheem,” Kiss — who rapped over Biggie’s classic track, said. “You can’t really play with that. I took shots at y’all [the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust] on there … Not really, just getting y’all back. Big up to them [ “Hottest MCs in the Game” ] lists. I don’t let them lists discourage me because the people who make the list, the people who’s on the lists, [watch out for my] new album, Top Five, Dead or Alive. ” “Listen,” Green adds. “I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. I had to stop for a minute. This is special. You just can’t go regular on that beat, so I just stopped. I had to take a minute and really concentrate on that one. He came off. He wrapped it up. Blood on the floor at the end of that one!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Jadakiss, DJ Drama, Green Lantern Talk Mayweather/ Mosley-Themed Mixtape

Trio also predict who will win Saturday’s big fight: Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather or ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. By Shaheem Reid DJ Drama, Jadakiss and DJ Green Lantern Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — One of hip-hop’s lyrical heavyweights is placing his bets on the motormouthed boxing champ. Jadakiss predicts that Floyd “Money” Mayweather is going to beat “Sugar” Shane Mosley in their much anticipated boxing match Saturday night in Las Vegas. To commemorate the big night, Jada his release the third installment of his heralded Champ Is Here mixtape series with Green Lantern and another underground great, DJ Drama. The trio are calling Champ Is Here, Part 3 a “Gangsta Grillz Invasion” because it is a joint venture between Drama’s “Gangsta Grillz” and Lantern’s “Invasion” tapes. Mixtape Daily caught up with the three this week at the Church Street Boxing Gym in lower Manhattan. Along with talking about the mixtape, the trio predicted who’s going to win on Saturday. “I’m ‘Money May’ to the death,” Jada said, sitting on a stool in the boxing ring. “I’m rocking with gun rule, man: ‘Money’ Mayweather in 12,” Drama added. Lantern wasn’t so sure. “Listen, I’m leaning toward Mayweather, but I gotta leave that open — for the surprise. Did you see when [Mosley wouldn’t let go of Mayweather’s] hands [at the press conference]? He couldn’t let go. Something’s going on. As a corner man, I gotta leave something open for surprise. So I’m not putting money out on this, at all.” “I say shout to Shane’s coach though,” Drama said, referring to Naazim Richardson. “He go hard,” ‘Kiss agreed. “[Shane’s] whole staff is hard, they’re humble. I respect what they’re doing. I just think Floyd is going to win. Everybody looks at Floyd [because of] how much trash-talking he does, but he’s a hard worker. He don’t drink, he don’t party. He works out. He has fun working out and trash-talking. He never lost. I gotta ride out with him. He’s a friend of mine. I believe in him.” Well, in preparation for the fight, Champ Is Here, Part 3 will hit the Internet Saturday — but you can get a preview of the music right here on MTV News later today! Eminem Says Recovery Will Not Have Skits

MC also tells Shade 45 about Recovery LP, collaborators. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Eminem has said that when he opened up his planned album Relapse 2 to a variety of producers, he was inspired to not just change the direction of the LP, but rethink the project completely: He buried the Relapse sequel and started working on Recovery , which will be out on June 22. “I kinda went back to the lab on that whole concept,” Em told radio personality Angela Yee on her Shade 45 show “The Morning After,” on Thursday (April 29). “As I started getting to work with different producers and sh–, the very sound changed and I kinda turned the corner.” Em rattled off an impressive array of trackmasters that he secured for Recovery, including Dr. Dre, DJ Khalil, Boi-1da — who produced the album’s first single, “Not Afraid,” which debuted Thursday — and Havoc from Mobb Deep. “He sent me a couple of tracks,” Em, a huge Mobb Deep fan, said of Havoc. “They were both cool, but one of them was that sh– and I had to do something to it. I’m just happy I got to work with him.” Jim Jonsin (T.I., Lil Wayne) also worked on the LP. “He was open to ideas,” Jonsin told Mixtape Daily . “He was real respectful to my craft. He let me do what I do. He asked me ideas on some of the lyrics. We had ideas for lyric changes. Certain words may or may not work on radio. We talked about that. He had a setup outside of the room to do production, but I’d rather be in the room where he was at, and he was cool with that. And I knocked out a couple of joints in there while he was in there with me. He was pretty open and he let me do my thing. He did his thing. It was a pretty good experience. “We touched on something that I haven’t done anything like that before,” Jonsin added. “It’s unique in a way for myself. It’s a place I’ve been wanting to go, and I’m so happy he allowed it to go down. He played a huge part in the record. Without him on it, it’s not the same. I don’t wanna give up too much about what it is and what direction.” Slim Shady told Yee that Recovery is diverse and doesn’t have a uniform sound. “There’s a variety of different things, different moods and things like that on there,” he said of the LP. “There’s not just one overall sound. It’s a bunch of different sh–.” Another surprise Em dropped about the album: for the first time, he will not have any skits. The often-hilarious segments had become a hallmark of a Slim Shady’s albums. What do you think Eminem’s Recovery LP will be like? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Eminem

Plies Thanks Young Jeezy For The ‘Opportunity’ To Collaborate

‘It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse,’ Plies tells Mixtape Daily of ‘Lose My Mind.’ By Shaheem Reid Plies Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Plies Plies and Young Jeezy have an obvious respect for each other. If you know either one of the Southern street champs, you know they won’t do collaborations with just anybody. Plies just released the song “Look Like,” featuring Jeezy and Fabolous, which comes on the heels of the underground record “So Bad” that leaked last year and the Snowman’s current club anthem “Lose My Mind.” “For me, bruh, to have an opportunity to create the situation I created with my brother and to have an artist from a record-selling standpoint and accomplish what the Snowman accomplished and to reach out to us and allow us to know there was a situation he wanted us to be a part of, it speaks a lot to what we gained and built in this business,” Plies said of being on “Lose My Mind.” “It speaks a lot of him as a person. A lot of times in this game, a lot of cats can respect you and be scared to show you they respect you. I take my hat to him for it. It was my job to deliver him what I call an ‘antique’ verse and watch the record respond out of the gate like it is in the clubs and in the streets. I think we got a hell of a situation. “He hit me the other day, and I told him he has a song that I consider to be a street antique,” Plies added. “To pick and choose the records we do is the most important thing. I always told myself from day one: I’ll never be a music whore when it came to this business. I always wanted to make sure I did in my heart what I felt was the right things to do. To get myself in a financial space where I don’t have to make desperate decisions, I feel we accomplished that thus far. I’m gonna try to continue to make more right moves than wrong moves.” Although the version of “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” that appeared on Raymond v. Raymond doesn’t feature Plies’ verse that rocked on radio this winter, the Florida native didn’t have anything negative to say about working with Usher. “It was good,” Plies said about the experience. “I was on my way to New York. My brother actually got the call. They say they needed the record back in a couple of hours. I didn’t hear the record. My brother, he didn’t have to let me hear it. He said, ‘It’s a go, bruh.’ I got the record, they called back, said they needed it in an hour. Ran to the studio, had my assistant push my flight back. We heard the record; we felt the record was great.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Drake Talks About The Evolution Of Mixtapes

‘A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images State of the Streets: Drake Talks Mixtapes On Mondays, we usually bring you our main pick, but we had to start this week by saluting mixtapes. We’re proud that so many MCs are stepping their mixtape game up. The mixtape world is strong, potent and competitive right now. This year alone, we’ve seen Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa, Jim Jones and Asher Roth drop product off in the streets and the Internet. The next few weeks are going to be flooded with ferocity, with Young Jeezy, the Game, T.I. and Rick Ross, just to name a few, dropping soon. Long live the underground! We asked Drake — the guy with the biggest mixtape of the past few years, So Far Gone — what he thought about the state of mixtapes right now. He said everyone has to come with their best. “I think that when creating a mixtape, you have to approach it with a selfless mind-set,” Drake told us. “A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album, or songs that aren’t good enough to make your album make your mixtape — unless you’re that good. There aren’t that many people that are that good. I’m not that good. That mixtape [ So Far Gone ] is me working my hardest. It wasn’t ‘Oh, here are the songs I’m gonna give away to you ’cause I have better songs coming.’ A mixtape has become an album. “Before, I remember people used to be in the studio cutting songs, and they would be like, ‘Oh, that song is OK. I’ll just put it on my mixtape,’ ” he added. “Now a mixtape is an actual tool. It’s a format you need. You don’t necessarily need it, but it can be useful. Like with Fab and the other guys, I know they do a lot of rapping on other guys’ beats. It’s hard to tour like that, as incredible as it may be. Now Wayne, when the No Ceilings set comes on, it’s ridiculous. It’s hard to rap over other people’s songs and have it be timeless. With So Far Gone, when I did flip other people’s songs, half the time people didn’t know what song it was. I tried to pick stuff that was new or rare or just like an album cut. But yeah, man, if I use somebody else’s beat, I try to make a song out of it.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
