N.O.R.E. Gets Wale And Waka Flocka Hooked On His Latest Mixtape Drug

‘I wanted to pick a wild name,’ N.O.R.E. tells Mixtape Daily of his new Crack on Steroids tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy N.O.R.E. Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : N.O.R.E. and DJ Green Lantern Representing : Queens, New York Mixtape : Crack on Steroids Real Spit : The Super Thug is back at it again. Almost a year after dropping his N.O.R.E.aster EP, Noreaga returns with the drug-induced Crack on Steroids. “I wanted to pick a wild name so when people look at it, they’ll say, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily about his latest release. Picking up where he left off last year with his street single “Nore Shot Somebody,” the C-N-N rapper keeps things “Grimey” on the tape-opening “Kenny Powers.” It’s not exactly an ode to the popular HBO comedy ; instead, N.O. uses Danny McBride’s fictional character as a thinly veiled reference to his distinct brand of cocaine. While partner-in-rhyme Capone was locked up in the late 1990s, N.O.R.E. proved he could hold things down as a soloist, crafting a number of hits like “Super Thug” and “Grimey.” On C.O.S., however, the Queens, New York, MC invites a number of his rap friends to the party. RZA shows up for “Hare Krishna” and Game, Busta Rhymes and Waka Flocka Flame pitch in on the Chris Brown-sampling “Lehhhgooo.” On the latter, producer Charli Brown flips Breezy’s opening ad lib from “Look at Me Now” and turns it into a catchy chorus. Wale also jumps on “Get Her” and will.i.am channels Slick Rick on “We Ain’t,” then Nore’s latest signee, Glacierz, proves she can hang with the fellas and delivers a standout verse on “War Song.” For all his guest spots, though, N.O.R.E. maintains his vibe throughout the tape — not that we expected anything less. Stalley Relives Savage Journey To Maybach On New Tape

‘I still want so much more, and there’s so much more to get,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of Savage Journey to the American Dream. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Stalley Photo: Getty Images Main Pick Headliners : Stalley Representing : Massillon, Ohio Mixtape : Savage Journey to the American Dream Real Spit : The road to the riches is no doubt a bumpy one, but now that Massillon, Ohio, MC Stalley is riding with the Maybach Music Group, his trip should be a bit smoother — or so you’d think. On March 30, the bearded Maybach spitter dropped Savage Journey to the American Dream. “I named it Savage Journey to the American Dream because that’s just what I’ve been through,” Stalley told Mixtape Daily. “I’ve been searching for that American dream, and I’ve been on a savage hunt for it for the past year.” Stalley first began making a name for himself in 2009 when he dropped MadStalley: The Autobiography, a mixtape he released with Mickey Factz’s GFC camp, on which he rhymed over classic Madlib productions. It was a subtle yet effective shot that would help Stalley make a name for himself in quite a few influential rap circles. After linking with Damon Dash’s DD172 outfit and recording alongside guys like Mos Def and Curren$y, the Ohio native found his lane and released Lincoln Way Nights in 2011. It was his most notable release and helped him get noticed by Rick Ross . “One of my goals was to be a signed artist, and now I’m with MMG and Warner Bros.,” he said. “I thought that things would calm down and I would kinda be satisfied with that, but I still want so much more and there’s so much more to get.” On Savage Journey, Stalley navigates through the pitfalls that await young rappers. “Lane to lane switchin’, keep these lames and dames at distance/ Eight-cylinder pistons, it’s money talkin’, listen/ And it’s tellin’ me go get it, and I’ve been on my way,” he spits on the moody “Route 21.” Curren$y shows up on the car-themed “Hammers & Vogues,” and on “Lover’s Lane,” Stalley makes a pit stop after getting sidetracked by some overzealous females. Stalley gets props, holding down most of the mixtape by himself, but he of course gets help from his MMG family. Rozay and Meek Mill show up for the Block Beattaz-produced “BCGMMG,” and Wale lends a helping hand on “Home to You.” Whether Stalley will ultimately see his dream fulfilled remains to be seen, but with his underground rep already solidified, there’s nowhere to go but up. Jay-Z’s Blueprint Inspires Jon Connor To Be ‘The Best’

Rookie MC tells Mixtape Daily he wrote The Blue Album in four days because ‘something just hit me.’ By Rob Markman Jon Connor Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Jon Connor When inspiration strikes Flint, Michigan, rap rookie Jon Connor, he just runs with it. His latest mixtape only took him a few days to write, and after he released The Blue Album on Valentine’s Day, Jon Connor sat down with Mixtape Daily and vowed to never slow down his output. “Maybe I’m biased, but I love The Blue Album . I did it in actually four days, wrote the whole Blue Album in four days because something just hit me,” he said. “I have such a hunger for respect and I want to be the best in the world, I’m gonna be the best in the world, that’s the way I look at it.” The Blue Album is a 14-track dedication to Jay-Z ‘s trilogy of Blueprint albums, with Connor taking instrumentals from each of the three albums and using them to suit his own needs. On “Takeover,” the self-proclaimed People’s Rapper commandeers Jigga’s track of the same name, but instead of throwing shots at specific rival rappers like Hov did, the newcomer keeps his darts ambiguous but still potent. “Best in the World” is a retread of “Hovi Baby,” the TLC-sampling track from The Blueprint 2, and the horn-laced “Thank You” pays homage to Jay’s 2009 The Blueprint 3. To craft an entire mixtape using only Jay-Z beats is a tall order for any rapper, much less the still largely unknown Jon Connor, but the nimble lyricist consistently delivers impressive bars throughout. “I feel that there’s people that know about me, but at the same time it’s still people that’s sleeping,” he said. “I had an epiphany, it’s like if I have to drop a tape every two months to make people respect me or bring people in to where I’m at, then that’s what I’m gonna do. Nothing is gonna stop me, and I think that’s what people are gonna get from The Blue Album. ” What do you think of Jon Connor’s The Blue Album ? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Jay-Z

Slim Thug And Paul Wall Are ‘Guiding’ Marcus Manchild

‘We just want to see him shine and keep the Houston movement going, man,’ Thug tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Slim Thug, Marcus Manchild and Paul Wall Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Marcus Manchild Houston, Texas’ Marcus Manchild is talented enough to make it in rap without any co-signs, but a little love from a couple of hometown heroes never hurt anyone. Marcus, who appeared in a Get in the Game segment on “RapFix Live” back in September, is getting ready to drop his Space Jams 2 mixtape. While Manchild is still a relative newcomer, he has been learning lessons from a couple of OG’s — Slim Thug and Paul Wall — for quite some time now. “I kinda like guide him, give him a little game, what to do, what not to do,” Thugga told Mixtape Daily of his relationship with Manchild. “It’s just like family, man, we just want to see him shine and keep the Houston movement going, man. That’s it.” As part of the AMG clique, Marcus has built quite the rep for himself, thanks to the rambunctious “Get Off Me” and his original Space Jams mixtape. MM’s latest single, “Problems,” features Bun B, so he clearly has no shortage of support. For Wall, it’s all about building positive relationships. He understands how quickly today’s up-and-coming rappers can become tomorrow’s superstars. “It’s good to build relationships, because when you come back to the city, you never know who you gonna holla at or who you gonna need or vice versa. You gonna be in a position to help them out,” he said. There are no ulterior motives, either: Neither Paul Wall nor Slim Thug have any formal business dealings with Marcus. They just truly appreciate his talent. “It’s a blessing. Just having them around, guiding me, what to expect and what not to do, how not to mess up in this game. It’s surreal,” Marcus said. “You can’t ask for nothing more than legends that’s in your city that really did something, that actually ventured off out of your city and made a name for themselves and actually are known worldwide and they’re here helping you out. It’s a great feeling.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Slim Thug Paul Wall

Kirko Bangz Plants His H-Town Flag On New Mixtape

‘A lot of people kinda taking our swag too; I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,’ Bangz tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Maurice Bobb Kirko Bangz Photo: Warner Bros. Mixtape Daily Main Pick Headliner : Kirko Bangz Representing : Houston Mixtape : Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa Real Spit : Kirko Bangz has been progressing quite nicely. Even before his breakout single “Drank in My Cup” began charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the Houston upstart was laying groundwork in H-Town’s mixtape scene. In 2009, he dropped the aptly titled Progression, and now, three years later, he has followed up with its sequel Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa on mixtape site Datpiff . In this new digital era, where most rap artists occupy the same space on the Internet, it seems that where a rapper hails from has become less important. Still, Bangz clearly is looking to put on for his city. “People were like, ‘Where you from?’ They thought I was from Cali, Atlanta, stuff like that. So really, with the mixtape and my last single ‘Drank in My Cup,’ I wanted people to know I was from H-Town,” Kirko told Mixtape Daily. “It’s real H-Town: We have stuff for the girls, of course, we got hip-hop stuff, we got storytelling stuff.” Progression 2 starts off with “Say Hello,” an introductory freestyle over DJ Khaled and Drake’s “I’m On One.” It’s not surprising that Kirko would jump on a track Drizzy has made famous, considering he has drawn more than a few comparisons to the Toronto rapper, thanks to his penchant for both rapping and singing. While Drake is openly inspired by Houston’s screw culture, Kirko truly embodies his city’s sonic characteristics on “Drank in My Cup.” The slow-rolling, lean-inspired cut repurposes Houston’s signature underground sound for radio; it debuted at #96 on Billboard ‘s Hot 100 this week. “A lot of people kinda taking our swag too. I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,” Bangz said, never naming who the swagger jackers actually are. On “Play Me,” KB takes on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and furthers the comparisons. Paul Wall reps for H-Town and shows up on “Knowmtalmbout,” and on “Trill Young N—a,” Kirk stakes his claim in the streets of his hometown. For the most part Progression 2 keeps a consistent vibe with a number of soul-dripped, screw-inspired anthems. He does switch things up however, particularly on towards the end on the hilarious story-telling joint “Ugly Bitches” where he recalls all of his less than glamorous sexual conquests. It’s not flawless, but over the course of 13 tracks, Kirko Bangz shows a pretty solid progression. Joints to Check For

Emilio Rojas Links With DJ Green Lantern For His Big Break

Emilio also enlists J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and V 12 the Hitman for his upcoming mixtape Breaking Point. By Rob Markman Emilio Rojas Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape: Breaking Point Real Spit: Emilio Rojas puts a lot into his lyrics. It’s that attention to detail that got him noticed by XXL in December, when the popular rap magazine launched a 50-artist poll for their upcoming 2012 Freshman cover. Though he’s a rap newcomer, the Rochester, New York, native has been grinding for years. On Thursday, Emilio will drop his fourth mixtape, Breaking Point, for free online with his mentor DJ Green Lantern. “It’s a little bit of a different sound. Less sample-based sound, a little more synthy, mid-tempo,” Emilio told Mixtape Daily of Breaking Point ‘s production. With beats from the Grammy-winning trio J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and V 12 the Hitman, Breaking Point is shaping up to be the perfect follow-up to Rojas’ 2010 tape, Life Without Shame . While his last effort boasted appearances from Big K.R.I.T., Killer Mike, Yelawolf and Mickey Factz, Emilio chose to make BP a solo affair. “I feel like the Life Without Shame project had a lot of rap features on it and I kinda just wanted to rap on my own,” he said. Rojas did include R&B features for his hooks, but no other rapper was invited to take part in the project. The title track finds the nimble-tongued lyricist pouring his heart out with multilayered bars. When talking about his parents, he gets deep. “My daddy learned she was pregnant and he was so angered/ He tried to end it, I’m no stranger to coat hangers/ He getting livid, sittin’ in on the clinic visits… he takes it out on my mama cause, he was into hittin’/ And that’s probably the reason my sister is into women,” Emilio painfully rhymes. Not all of Breaking Point is so heavy however. On “I Got it,” Rojas explores his wild and ignorant side. “It’s gonna catch some people off guard, but it’s fun,” he teases. On “Pimpin’,” ER once again teams with J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. At first Emilio bucked the production trio’s direction. He wanted to perform the song’s hook himself, but the League’s Rook suggested using a seasoned vocalist to sing the chorus. “Rook made me change the hook on [Pimpin’], which I wasn’t happy about,” he said, “but when the hook came in, it was good. Rook made the right call on that.” And Emilio Rojas made the right call with Breaking Point. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Rocko Shows Gift Of Gab On New Mixtape

DJ Scream, Future and Verse Simmonds team up with Atlanta MC, who tells Mixtape Daily, ‘I was put here to be great.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Rocko Photo: Prince Williams/ Getty Images Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Headliners : Rocko and DJ Scream Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : G.O.G. (Gift of Gab) Real Spit : Rocko got that gift of gab. The “Umma Do Me” rapper first made his name with his 2007 single and then went on to release his major-label debut, Self Made, a year later. There have been some hiccups along the way, but through it all the Atlanta rapper has remained one of his city’s most-beloved figures. The A1 Entertainment CEO has been instrumental in Future ‘s burgeoning career, but is still focused on his music as well. Need proof? Just check his latest, G.O.G. Throughout the mixtape, Rocko crafts bouncy tracks with hit potential, while at the same time sharing his real-life experiences. On “Balance,” Rocko teams with Verse Simmonds, and together they sing and rap about the tightrope walk they conduct when mixing business with their personal lives. The Zaytoven-produced “The Choice is Yours” is equally as enlightening. Rocko raps about moving from an illegal life to the legal music business. Future appears on “Take U Away,” “Squares Out Your Circle” and “Power of That P,” on which he and Rocko employ tons of alliteration, using the letter “p” to speak about the many ways in which power manifest. Over the course of 19 tracks, Rocko provides an even-keeled listen; with no noticeable dips, the DJ Scream-helmed mixtape bangs throughout. Then again, we expected nothing less. Joints to Check For
