Nicki Minaj Producers Explain ‘Your Love’ Sample

Pop and Oak faced major sample issues with Pink Friday track, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Bill McCay/ WireImage Behind the Beats: Pop and Oak Fans might not know Pop and Oak by name, but they damn sure know their beats. Trey Songz’s “Unusual,” Big Sean and Kanye West’s “Marvin & Chardonnay” and, of course, Nicki Minaj ‘s 2010 single “Your Love” are just a few of the duo’s hits. Now they’re up for a Grammy thanks to their work on Nicki’s Pink Friday, which is nominated in the Best Rap Album category. Pop, a Philadelphia native, and his production partner Oak, who hails from Istanbul, Turkey, have been working as a duo since 2008, back when they first produced “Your Love” for a then-emerging Minaj. ” ‘Your Love’ was a song that didn’t make Beam Me Up Scotty, the mixtape,” Pop told Mixtape Daily. Nicki was super-critical of her performance on the song, but after it eventually leaked at the top of 2010, there was no stopping it — well, there was one little obstacle to clear. The original leaked version featured a sample of Annie Lennox’s 1995 version of “No More I Love You’s,” but after the U.K. singer wouldn’t clear the sample, Pop and Oak had to come up with an alternative. “They didn’t let us clear the sample, so the version that leaked wasn’t the version that got on the radio. We ended up re-creating it,” Oak said. The duo redid the sample a little too well, it seemed. Even after the switch-up, Lennox’s lawyers continued to reach out, thinking Nicki’s new version of “Your Love” still incorporated the sample. “They thought what they were hearing on the radio was still the master,” Oak said. “Annie Lennox thought she was hearing herself, which was fly as hell,” Pop added. Fat Joe’s Darkside II ‘Most Controversial’ Mixtape Out

‘Right now, it seems that gangsta rap is extinct, so I give you that free,’ Joe Crack tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Darkside, Vol. II Headliner : Fat Joe Key Cameo : “Pushing Keys,” featuring Raekwon Essential Info : In rap, it’s important to be multifaceted, feeding fans radio hits while maintaining close ties to the streets. It’s a balancing act that Fat Joe has mastered throughout his career, most recently with the release of his super-catchy single “Another Round” (with Chris Brown) and his murderous mixtape The Darkside, Vol. II. “I’m a grown guy, I’m a grown man, so for me, I don’t have no problem touching that sexy stuff — and I do everything,” Joe told Mixtape Daily last week. “I might have the most controversial, the most hard-core mixtape out: Darkside II out right now online; [if] you want that real hip-hop, go get it.” When the Bronx, New York, rap titan first emerged on the scene in 1993 with his debut album, Represent, his official moniker was Fat Joe da Gangsta. By the time his sophomore record came out two years later, he’d simplified his name, going by Fat Joe. Still, he’s always maintained a hard edge. “Right now, it seems that gangsta rap is extinct, so I give you that [music] free. I give you The Darkside II, it’s better than some people’s albums,” Joe boasted. “It’s that hard, you might hear that and be like, ‘Damn.’ I give it all: I do songs for the ladies, I do big songs and I touch the streets at the same time, so I feed everybody.” “Another Round” should provide Joe with ample radio play and visibility as he promotes his upcoming 11th album, while Darkside II will keep Crack cemented in the streets. Starting out with the French Montana-assisted “Welcome to the Darkside,” Cook Coke Crack sets off his verbal murder spree in grand fashion and doesn’t let up. Jadakiss rides shotgun on “Dope Man,” a gangsta’s reworking of the Beatles’ classic “Yesterday.” There’s no shortage of hard-core rap joints either. Even on the sweet-sounding “Angels Say,” Joe spits about John Gotti and late-night gunfights over Mark Henry’s soulful production. Through it all, Fat Joe has managed to keep his integrity as an artist, and for him, that’s the most important thing. “I don’t really get no flack, no backlash, like, ‘Damn, Joe, you doin’ a joint for the girls?’ I never really get that.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Raekwon Scores Unexpected Victory With New Mixtape

Wu-Tang Clan vet tells Mixtape Daily about the free digital download: ‘Anything that I give y’all this time is gonna be unexpected.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX Raekwon Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Mixtape : Unexpected Victory Headliner : Raekwon the Chef Representing : Staten Island, New York Real Spit : Raekwon isn’t ready to be boxed in just yet. The 18-year rap vet, who started with Wu-Tang Clan in 1993, first became known for his multi-syllabic, kung fu-inspired rap style, but has since evolved sonically. Who could forget the Chef’s mafia-themed crime sagas on his 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … ? Last year, Rae took things back to the block on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, and now he is looking to conquer the digital space with his latest mixtape, which he offered as a free download on New Year’s Day. “This mixtape right here is called Unexpected Victory . I call it the Unexpected because it’s unexpected on what I’m gonna give y’all, and on top of it, it’s gonna be victorious,” the Chef explained to Mixtape Daily . “I feel good. I feel like I can take a dive in something and be professional with it and really watch it grow, and that’s what I wanted to do with this mixtape right here.” The 17-track mix bangs from start to finish. Opening with a dramatic violin-laden instrumental, Rae launches into the slow-rolling, sophisticated “Just a Toast.” Over the Mark Henry-produced gem, the Staten Island, New York, MC reminds listeners of his drug-laced street background as well as his prowess on the mic when he spits, “Powerful when giving coke out/ You know they call me Sugar Ray, the Chef, the G.O.A.T.’s out.” “A Pinebox Story” is another gem. Rae, a master storyteller, lays a murder mystery atop a soulful 9th Wonder production. He’s great alone, but there, Lex Diamonds recruits plenty of lyrical assassins. His new artist JD Era rides shotgun on a number of tracks, while Mobb Deep, Capone, Noreaga, Vado, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Fred the Godson provide ample backup. Busta Rhymes shows up on the lavishly laid “MTV Cribs.” An ode to the good life, Rae and the Dungeon Dragon throw a nod to the classic MTV show while displaying their own brand of rich living. Raekwon’s not-so-humble abode features a 360-degree spinning wall unit, a see-through refrigerator and a tub full of ice. Not to be outdone, Bussa Buss’ castle boasts crystal chandeliers, an Alaskan polar bear rug and a casino in the basement, and a rare painting of Jean-Michel Basquiat feeding fruit to Madonna. Can’t say we saw that one coming. “It’s called Unexpected because anything that I give y’all this time is gonna be unexpected,” Rae said. “It’s gonna be like, ‘Oh sh–, he jumped into a new world, he jumped into a new chamber.’ ” As if we’ve never heard him before. Breaking out from Waka Flocka ‘s Brick Squad Monopoly crew, Wooh sets his mark on the Southside-produced “King of Da Jungle.” Over the rowdy track, the Atlanta/Queens representer plants his flag, making a number of king-like and murderous proclamations. On “My Benz,” Wooh enlists Waka Flocka to ride over the electric Lex Luger-produced beat, and on “Problem,” he links with Gucci Mane. Recently deceased Brick Squad member Slim Dunkin also appears on “All I Ever Wanted” and “Put Your Hands Up.” While various members of Wooh’s BSM crew appear throughout the tape, he does manage to hold things down for himself on the catchy “I Prefer,” “Church” and the bouncy “Bad News.” In the end, Wooh believes he has done more than enough to state his case. ” Krown the King, I think I deserve it, man,” he said. “We been going hard for a couple of years now. It’s finally starting to pay off, so crown the king, man.” Joints to Check For

Yelawolf Recruits YouTube Fan For Radioactive Debut

Mona Moua’s video lands her on rapper’s ‘Write Your Name.’ By Rob Markman Yelawolf Photo: MTV News It’s not every day an artist takes a fan and gives them a feature on an album, but with Radioactive, Yelawolf did just that, placing singer Mona Moua on his debut LP. After Moua failed to get into a sold-out Minneapolis show, she went home and recorded “Ode to Yelawolf” and uploaded the original composition to YouTube . “It was actually really good,” Yela told MTV News about the song and video Moua uploaded back in April. “Her melody was good, she could play guitar. … I was a bit blown away by how talented she was.” In the video, Moua strums the guitar while singing about her disappointment after not getting into the sold-out show. “No Trunk Muzik for me,” she sang before integrating Yela song titles like “Mixing Up the Medicine” and “Pop the Trunk” into the rest of her sullen lyrics. Little did Moua know that the heartfelt display would land her on ‘Wolf’s “Write Your Name” on Radioactive, which dropped last week. “We had a record called ‘Write Your Name’ about the unsung hero, and it just so happened that her tone, it just fit perfectly,” he said, crediting the idea to Ghet-O-Vision head Kawan “KP” Prather. “KP had the idea to bring her out and put her on the hook and she killed it.” Produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, “Write Your Name” mixes the drums from Rick Ross’ “Aston Martin Music” with a new, melancholy piano melody. On the track, Yelawolf uses his small-town come-up from Gadsden, Alabama, to exemplify how much more untapped talent may be waiting in the wings. Moua sings the all-too-perfect hook, “I’ll write your name across the sky and take away the stars, ’cause you light up the night/ You’re as high as the moon, when you’re here with me/ That’s why I’m gonna write your name for the world to see.” Have you heard “Write Your Name” yet? B.o.B Drops E.P.I.C. Mixtape

Mixtape Daily looks at free Strange Clouds preview, E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial), featuring Eminem, T.I. and Lil Wayne. By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: Michael Roman/FilmMagic Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Mixtape : E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial) Headliner : B.o.B Representing : Atlanta Real Spit : B.o.B is out of this world. From his underground 2009 single “I’ll Be in the Sky” to his Hayley Williams-assisted hit “Airplanes,” Bobby Ray has always fancied himself a different type of rap artist, and on his next LP, things will get stranger. His upcoming sophomore effort, Strange Clouds, aims to stretch the boundaries of music. “It’s all about the fusion between the outer limits and the inner limits, from the sky to the ground; it’s everything in between, above and below, so Strange Clouds, for me, it’s my ‘Twilight Zone,’ ” he told Mixtape Daily on the video set for his “Strange Clouds” single. But before B.o.B embarks on that particular mission, he gave fans a taste of what they can expect from the new album Monday (November 28) when he dropped his newest mixtape, E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial) on DatPiff . During the course of 15 tracks, Bob serves an array of tracks that showcase his multitude of musical abilities. He’s spitting straight bars alongside Meek Mill and Playboy Tre on the title track, then experimenting with melody on “What Are We Doing.” The hard-as-nails “Boom Bap” is a hip-hop purist’s dream: The drum-driven track unites the multiplatinum-selling T.I. with underground hero Mos Def, and together with Bobby Ray, they go in without need for a hook, MC’ing just for the sake of MC’ing. Things get even better on “Things Get Worse” with Eminem, as Slim Shady brings the ATLien into his world of hysterical celeb-bashing. On “Welcome to the Jungle,” B.o.B tackles the Throne’s kinetic instrumental from their much-talked-about album. “Perfect Symetry” unites the “Nothin’ on You” star with Atlanta’s 2011 street king 2 Chainz — and then, of course, there is Lil Wayne on “Strange Clouds.” What a preview. Lil Wayne Producer Inspired By Nirvana For Rebirth II

‘I’m bringing it back with a new sound,’ Detail tells Mixtape Daily of finding inspiration in the past. By Rob Markman Detail Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Detail Though he is currently sitting atop the rap game, Lil Wayne transcends hip-hop. He flirted with rock early on, picking up the guitar for his “Leather So Soft” video with Birdman and again in his 2008 clip for “Lollipop.” But it was his 2010 rock-inspired Rebirth album that really stretched the boundaries. In October, on the set of Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad” video , Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News of Wayne’s plans for a second rock LP. During the same sit-down, “How to Love” producer Detail spoke about his inspiration for crafting the tracks for Tunechi’s Rebirth II. “I’ve been listening to Nirvana, I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd,” he told Mixtape Daily. “The zone I’ve been goin’ in on this sh–, I’m bringing it back, back, back, back with a new sound.” Detail, who recently produced Bow Wow’s “Sweat,” is clearly not against finding inspiration in the past. Addressing any skeptics, the Detroit hitmaker promises that he will add his own unique twist. “We all get everything from the past musically, everything has been done already, so for me it’s just taking those elements that I could ride in my car and enjoy and bring it back to something new,” he said. According to Mack, Weezy is not only working on Rebirth II but is actually at least 12 songs into his upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II as well. For the YM prez it is Wayne’s ability to cross genres that makes him such a draw. “He captures all those different audiences, and then at a concert or a show, you bring all those different people together,” Mack explained. “You bring your Rebirth rock people, you bring your Carter people and you bring your I Am Not a Human Being [crowd], and you have a great show. That’s why we sell out arenas every night.” There is currently no release date for either LP, and when MTV News asked Wayne, he downplayed both albums. ” I Am Not a Human Being II and Rebirth II are so not important right now,” Tune said. “We got Twist coming, we got Tyga coming, and then we have Shanell coming, then we got Bow Wow — that’s what’s really important. What I’m doing is really never important, actually. I’m a very unimportant guy. It’s just me.” Related Artists Lil Wayne

Wiz Khalifa Comparisons ‘Huge’ To Newbie T. Mills

‘I thought that whole signing to a major label, getting on the radio only happened in movies,’ ‘Stupid Boy’ MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman T. Mills Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: T. Mills One listen to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and that was all she wrote for young Travis Mills. The 22-year-old Riverside, California, native was so enamored by the multiplatinum rap quintet that he decided to jump into music. “The fact that they could sing and rap at the same time, integrate melody and stuff into their songs, I was blown away,” T. Mills told Mixtape Daily. Now that Mills does in fact blend rap and pop melodies in his music, some are comparing the tatted-up newcomer to Wiz Khalifa. While Mills insisted that he’s his own man, he’s also flattered by the comparison. “I think it’s definitely a compliment. I’m a huge Wiz fan,” he said. “Even for someone to put me in the same category as Wiz is a huge accomplishment for myself because I been f—in’ with Wiz a long time and he’s on top of the game right now.” T. Mills hopes to eventually occupy a similar space. When he was 17, the young rapper began recording songs on his MacBook, and by 18, he was posting his music on MySpace. In 2009, Mills performed 60 shows as part of the Vans Warped Tour, where a dance tent was his stage. He went on to sign with independent label Uprising Records, the home of his 2010 debut Ready, Fire, Aim! Although he’s still a relative unknown, his video for “Stupid Boy” has clocked 1.8 million views on YouTube. And T. Mills is just getting started. At the top of the year, he signed to Columbia Records, dropping his free LP Leaving Home with the label. “Originally, the concept for the album was a mixtape, I just wanted to put out a mixtape,” he explained. “What if we do an album that I give to my fans as gratitude?” he remembered asking the record company. While “Stupid Boy” is a party track, Mills believes he has grown since then, so on Leaving Home, he offers up more than just carefree, feel-good music. “It was my first time in a real studio, so it was my first time having access to all that stuff,” he said of his breakout single. “Before then I just recorded on my laptop. I feel like it was a good learning experience for me. It’s not who I am now but it gave me that platform.” That’s not to say that Leaving Home isn’t fun. There’s the sneakers-and-sex ode “Vans On,” where Mills sings about making love while wearing his skater kicks, for example. And to add balance, there’s also the inspirational “Smoke & Mirrors” and the cautionary “Hollywood.” With his major-label debut scheduled for a 2012 release, it seems T. Mills is well on his way. The reality of it all, though, is still a bit much for the small-town kid. “When I was 19, I didn’t think anything could happen,” he admitted. “I’m from a small town; I thought that whole signing to a major label, getting on the radio only happened in movies.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
