Lil Chuckee Could Be ‘Another Wayne,’ Mack Maine Says

Chuckee ‘invested in a studio and learned how to record himself,’ Young Money president tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne and Lil Chuckee Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Mack Maine Young Money is an army, better yet a navy, and when it comes to their youngest soldier, Lil Chuckee , label president Mack Maine has high hopes. Mixtape Daily caught up with the YMCMB squad at Chuckee’s birthday bash on October 1 in Atlanta, and El Presidente had some key advice for his 16-year-old spitter. “Just make sure that he follows Wayne’s work ethic,” Mack told Mixtape Daily of the tip that he gave young Chuck. “To me Chuckee can be another Wayne, hopefully one day with time.” Obviously, the teenage rhyme slinger has been listening. On his latest mixtape, Twap or Die, Chuckee follows in Weezy’s footsteps, commandeering industry instrumentals for his own needs. Songs like YC’s “Racks” becomes “Twaps on Twaps” while the Throne’s new single “N—as in Paris” becomes “N—az in Hawaii.” Throughout Chuck adds his own flavor, making each track his own. Mack, who helps oversee the careers of not only Wayne, but of Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Lil Twist and Cory Gunz, is impressed with Chuck’s growth. “Chuckee called me and told me, ‘I got my own studio,’ ” the President recalled. “So he listens. Instead of him saying ‘I’m writing every day’ he actually took his show money and invested in a studio and he learned how to record himself.” The dedication has clearly paid off. “Chuckee doin’ like five, six songs a day,” Mack said. ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze Dropped By Label

Season-nine winner’s album was lowest-selling by show champ. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Season-nine “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze has set a couple of records since taking home the title two years ago over dreadlocked rival Crystal Bowersox. Unfortunately for him, though, they’re not the kinds you want to brag about. After landing the worst-selling debut album from an “Idol” winner in history, the soft-spoken rocker has quietly been dumped by his label, RCA Records , after just one release. The singer and former paint-store clerk failed to catch fire with an audience while selling just 168,000 copies of his 2010 major-label bow, Live It Up. With only sporadic touring and no single topping the charts, DeWyze was largely off the radar in the months following the album’s release as he kept a much lower profile than previous winners. He becomes only the second “Idol” winner to be dropped after a single album, following in the footsteps of season five’s Taylor Hicks, whose Arista Records debut sold more than 705,000 copies. While a spokesperson for RCA could not be reached for comment at press time, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news. In an interview with the trade magazine last week, newly appointed RCA Records CEO Peter Edge let slip that Illinois native DeWyze, 25, is no longer on the label’s roster. DeWyze’s option with the label expired in September, and his season was the final one of a nine-year partnership between “Idol,” 19 Recordings and RCA’s parent company, Sony Music. While DeWyze has been let go, a number of previous “Idol” winners remain on the RCA roster, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, David Cook and Kris Allen. An unnamed rep for the singer told THR that DeWyze is in a “good place right now” and he is reportedly working on new music and planning his upcoming wedding to model Joanna Walsh. One Thurd ‘Just Stepping In The Ring’

Mizay Entertainment’s Yung C, Lissa Luigi and Young Magic tell Mixtape Daily about anti-bullying single ‘Whoosh (Be Gone).’ By Rob Markman One Thurd Photo: Larry Robinson / Mizay Entertainment Firestarter: One Thurd Running in the same circle as juggernaut artists like Waka Flocka Flame, Gucci Mane and the roster at Mizay Entertainment could be intimidating, but the members of One Thurd aren’t scared. “The way I feel about the whole situation is: When you’re young, you have more longevity,” Yung C told Mixtape Daily after the group performed at an Atlanta birthday party for Young Money’s Lil Chuckee. “The younger you are, the more opportunity you got. We still young; we’re just stepping in the ring.” The trio — Yung C, 18, Lissa Luigi, 19, and Young Magic, 20 — are ready to take things to the next level. Being managed by Mizay Entertainment’s Deb Antney, mother and manager of Waka, has its perks, and the up-and-coming group is well aware of what the affiliation brings. “We gonna take advantage of all that anyway,” Lissa said. “We didn’t care; we met Flocka like, ‘Hey, wassup, my boy? We here now; deal with it,’ ” she joked. The Macon, Georgia, group is off to a great start thanks to their breakout single “Whoosh (Be Gone).” While the bouncy beat fits in with many of today’s rap hits, “Whoosh” is a unique jam that sends a positive message. The catchy song is aimed at haters and stands as an anti-bullying anthem. “We’re leading on our generation and the generation after us. They need music that’s gonna lift them up and bring them out of negative situations,” Lissa said. “We’ve come out of a lot of things in our life too, so we feel like it’s important.” Yung C added: “Where we come from, we see a lot of bullying, so we strong against it.” With such a positive attitude, it seems One Thurd won’t be fading away anytime soon. “We all working hard to make good music so people can listen to,” Magic said. “We coming hard.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

T.I. Gets ‘Support’ From NBA Star Amar’e Stoudemire

‘Me and Tip been homeys for a long time,’ Knicks power forward tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman T.I. Photo: Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Amar’e Stoudemire Rappers weren’t the only ones who lined up to welcome T.I. home after he was released from prison last week. NBA baller Amar’e Stoudemire joined Tip at Atlanta’s Club Esso to celebrate the MC’s homecoming over the weekend. “Me and Tip been homeys for a long time now, so it’s good to see him back on his feet, back out here in the city,” the Knicks power forward said when MTV News caught up with him on the black carpet for the BET Hip Hop Awards. “I came out to support him.” This time of year, Stoudemire is typically gearing up for the basketball season, but due to a labor dispute between the players union and league owner, the 2011-12 NBA basketball season is currently locked out and may be lost entirely if an agreement isn’t reached soon. Stoudemire has been keeping plenty busy. This past weekend, he attended the Hip Hop Awards and will appear as a presenter when the show airs next Tuesday. Not only that, Amar’e is working on a clothing line with Rachel Roy. So what does a top baller listen to during his downtime? Jay-Z and Kanye West, of course. “Right now, I’m on that Watch the Throne album. You can’t go wrong with that one baby,” he proclaimed. Still, the number-one question on every sports fans mind is: When will players return to the hardwood? Stoudemire didn’t have an answer, though he sounded optimistic. “Hopefully soon. Right now, we’re on the cusp trying to figure out what we’re gonna do with this new deal,” he said. “Once we get that sorted out, we should be able to play soon.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Rick Ross Producer Aone Advises: ‘Get Ready’

Ross has recorded hundreds of songs for God Forgives, I Don’t, producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Ade Mangum Aone Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Aone Every rap crew needs a go-to destination for their beats. Rick Ross is aware of this and inked producer Aone, who is building up quite a reputable discography, to his Maybach Music Group. Aone produced “10 Bricks,” featuring YMCMB’s Birdman , which appeared on Rozay’s Ashes to Ashes mixtape. The upstart has also hooked up tracks for MMG members, including Triple C’s and Masspike Miles, as well as the Outlawz, French Montana and others. He is also working on a project with former G-Unit rapper Young Buck called Bond Money and will be handling all of its production. Not bad for a guy from another continent. “I’m actually from Nigeria,” Aone told Mixtape Daily. “I came out here about eight years ago, and I just started working with a couple of people. Mobb Deep — I started getting in the studio with them. I was influenced by Havoc just making beats and [DJ] Toomp and a lot of other producers.” Of his particular sound, Aone said, “I do a lot of sampling: I like to sample, but I twist up my samples. It’s a mix of the South, and it’s a mix of New York. It’s a mix of everything. It’s something different.” The producer is making sure to reserve his best beats for the home team. He revealed that Ross has recorded hundreds of songs for his forthcoming album God Forgives, I Don’t . “Ross is winning right now. I did a couple of joints for the album, but Ross, he’s always working,” Aone explained. “He’s in the studio; he’s recording over 200 tracks, so you never know. We did over six records already featuring different people. But Ross, he likes to take his time like a masterpiece. He got a bunch of work, so when it’s time, we gonna know. But we still working right now. I’m getting back in the studio, and we doing more stuff. God Forgives, I Don’t : It’s coming; get ready.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists AOne Rick Ross

Leona Lewis Delays Album Release To 2012

‘I’m feeling so inspired right now and have decided to continue recording,’ singer says of Glassheart. By Jocelyn Vena Leona Lewis Photo: Getty Images Leona Lewis fans will have to wait to hear what the singer has in store for them on her album Glassheart. The British pop chanteuse has taken to her Facebook page to announce that the album is now expected to drop next year, instead of November as originally planned. “Just wanted to update everyone on the album!” she wrote . “I’m feeling so inspired right now and have decided to continue recording! I have a collection of songs that I’m so in love with and I [know] there’s more to be born so it means the album will come early next year x.” Despite the delay, she did tease fans with a single, “Collide,” earlier this year. The song, written and produced by Autumn Rowe and produced by Sandy Vee, garnered attention when Swedish DJ Avicii claimed it was plagiarized from his 2010 track “Penguin.” Avicii was eventually given co-writing credits on the track, NME.com reports. A video for the song dropped this past summer and featured Lewis getting flirty on the beach. The dance-flavored track was something of a departure for Lewis, who made a name for herself with big ballads and mid-tempo hits like “Better in Time” and “Bleeding Love.” She’s reportedly been in the studio with a number of A-listers including Chuck Harmony, Claude Kelly, Ryan Tedder, Fraser T. Smith, Dallas Austin, Rico Love, Naughty Boy and Ne-Yo. The album is a follow-up to 2009’s Echo, which spawned hits like “Happy” when it dropped. Related Artists Leona Lewis

Lil Wayne’s Success ‘Gratifying’ For Mystikal

‘Wayne was a student in my dojo before,’ Mystikal tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Mystikal Since Mystikal’s been gone , a lot has changed on hip-hop’s playing field. In 2004, when Mystikal was locked up on sexual battery and extortion charges, Jay-Z was fresh off his “retirement,” Kanye West was just beginning his rookie year in rap and Lil Wayne was getting set to drop the first album in his now-famed Tha Carter series. Now, Kanye and Jay are the Throne and both enjoy veteran rap status, and Lil Wayne is sitting on top of the world. Mystikal recalls his fellow New Orleans rapper’s come-up and can’t help but feel a bit responsible for the growth. “Wayne was a student in my dojo before. I was a sensei before. I had big inspiration on him,” Mystikal said of the younger Weezy. “It’s gratifying to see him reach the heights that he reached with his hustle. So I’m proud of him.” Mystikal, who turned 41 last week, has a catalog of rap classics. Songs like “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger” helped shine hip-hop’s light on his native New Orleans and the artists who hail from the Louisiana city. Still, the Tarantula isn’t content with his past hits. He has recently been in the studio with producer Mannie Fresh, cooking up a new batch of material. So how will this new Mystikal fit into hip-hop’s current landscape? “Just another option, just give them another option,” Mystikal told Mixtape Daily of what he hopes to offer to rap fans. “All the marquee artists are who they are; I don’t have to say no names. [The fans] just ready for more options, they ready for some other big cards to play. Trust me!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Willow Smith Finishing Up Debut Album, Jukebox Says

‘A lot of her music has a very big influence of everything from rock to pop to hip-hop,’ producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Willow Smith Photo: Getty Images Behind the Beats: Jukebox Willow Smith took music fans by surprise in 2010 when she dropped her debut single, “Whip My Hair.” Will Smith’s swagged-out offspring blended a pop sound with a distinct urban sensibility, and producer Ronald “Jukebox” Jackson was largely responsible for the platinum hit. So what’s next musically for the 10-year-old singer? Jukebox tells Mixtape Daily that Willow is in the process of finishing up her Roc Nation debut . “I did like eight, nine songs on Willow, so right now, we’re in the process of just trying to close out the album,” he said. “It’s just the whole process. You got to think about it: She’s a 10-year old girl. She’s gotta have a life, she’s gotta be a kid.” According to Jukebox, the album will contain a myriad of sounds. “Willow is kind of a combination of what ‘Whip My Hair’ was. Willow just isn’t a pop star, she isn’t just an urban artist; she’s very international,” he explained. “A lot of her music has a very big influence of everything from rock to pop to hip-hop.” On “Rock Star,” fans will hear a different side of Willow, and Jukebox — who also did the music for Swizz Beatz and Chris Brown’s “Dance Like a White Girl” — hopes it will be her next hit. “Next single which I’m praying for is a record I did called ‘Rock Star.’ … She’s been performing it everywhere. It’s getting very great reaction,” he said. “We also did a record with Diggy Simmons that’s incredible. … She’s just a combination of everything pretty much.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y Have More Collaborations In The Stash

‘You may can expect an album, mixtape, maybe nothing,’ Big Sean tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Big Sean Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Big Sean When Wiz Khalifa , Curren$y and Big Sean began releasing tracks at the top of the summer, talk of a joint project between the joint-loving trio excited rap fans. What began as an isolated leak with “O.T.T.R.” gave way to four other tracks (“Flowers,” the syrupy “Weed Brownies,” “Dot Dot Dot” and “Proceed”) in less than a week. But beyond that, who knows? Sean hinted at a mixtape in interviews, but nothing ever materialized. “We just had a studio bus on tour, me and Wiz and Curren$y. You know, they already did the How Fly mixtape, so they were working on something themselves,” Big Sean Don explained to Mixtape Daily of the trio’s collaboration. “They were talking about how they wanted a verse from me. I was like, ‘Man, f— a verse, why don’t I just be on the whole thing? Why don’t we just all do something?’ And then Wiz was like, ‘Man, it gotta be for so much money, though. Or if we gonna do it, let’s just do it for free and put it out ourselves.’ ” The idea didn’t fully get off the ground, though Sean does reveal that the three amigos have more tracks in the stash. “We were just really figuring out what to do, but most importantly we just did those five songs and we got more songs, too,” he said. “We put a song out every day. It’s crazy because a lot of people who are popular aren’t really taking full advantage of the Internet or taking advantage of being able to really do stuff like that. For us, it’s just having fun with it.” As of now there aren’t any plans for the rest of the songs, but Sean leaves just a little hope for a collaborative tape. “You may can expect something. You may can expect an album, mixtape, maybe nothing. Maybe we’ll never put another song out,” he said before doing the infamous Kanye shrug. “It’s tight to have that element of surprise.” Related Artists Big Sean Wiz Khalifa Curren$y
