CyHi The Prynce Jacks Rap Classics For Jack Of All Trades

‘It’s just me showing my versatility,’ G.O.O.D. Music soldier tells Mixtape Daily of jumping on timeless beats from Youngbloodz to Outkast. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Main Pick Artist : CyHi the Prynce Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : Jack of All Trades Real Spit : CyHi the Prynce figured he would end the summer the same way he started: with a free mixtape. In June, the G.O.O.D. Music soldier released Royal Flush 2 to much fanfare and as August rolled to a close, the MC once again got to work with his Jack of All Trades tape. The Atlanta rapper teamed with both DJ Scream and DJ Spinz to gather a bunch of familiar instrumentals that would showcase his rhyme skills. As far as the title of the tape, it’s all pretty simple if you let the Prynce tell it. “It’s just me showing my versatility and that I’m a jack of all trades,” CyHi told Mixtape Daily. “Slow beats, fast beats, mid-tempos, whatever; rugged, pop, I can rap on it all. Gospel, country — whatever you want to give me, I can do. So I think Jack of All Trades shows that I’m a jack of all trades.” On “Farmer,” CyHi goes to the Midwest for inspiration, using Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ‘s 1994 beat for “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” to rap about his affinity for marijuana. “Blacksmith” continues the trend. Over the slow bounce of Tru ‘s “I’m Bout It, Bout It,” Kanye’s prot

Curren$y Echoes Jay-Z’s Classic Debut, Ski Beatz Says

‘ Pilot Talk 1 and 2 are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,’ producer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Ski Beatz Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Ski Beatz Ski Beatz knows talent when he sees it. Early in his career, the platinum producer from North Carolina also doubled as an MC in the 1990s group Original Flavor, but after meeting a young, fast-rapping Jay-Z, he decided to put down the mic and pick up producing full time. He hasn’t looked back, crafting fan-favorite tracks for the likes of Hov, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Lil Kim and Curren$y . These days, it’s the New Orleans spitta who has him most excited. “I feel like the albums I did with Curren$y — Pilot Talk 1 and 2 — are like the Reasonable Doubt s of this time,” Ski told Mixtape Daily . Comparing Curren$y to Jay might seem like a stretch, but having produced four tracks on Jigga’s classic debut, Ski has enough experience with both artists to draw the educated parallel. “The music that I chose and gave Curren$y is timeless music; it’s gonna be around,” Ski explained. “Older people listen to Curren$y because the beats — it kinda takes them back. But younger cats listen to it because of the lyrical content and the flows; because they are able to relate to what Curren$y is talking about. “That’s how it was with Jay: The music that we chose was kinda older-sounding music, but the lyrics was now.” For Ski, meeting Jay was life-changing. It was Brooklyn’s DJ Clark Kent who introduced the two when he brought Jay to an Original Flavor video shoot. Dame Dash, who managed Ski and Original Flavor at the time, also was impressed by the up-and-coming Jigga. Together with Kareem “Biggs” Burke, Dame and Jay would go on to start Roc-A-Fella Records. Ski just wanted to make their beats. “Jay rhymed, and at the moment when I heard him rhyme, I was like, ‘This dude gotta get on one of our songs,’ ” Ski remembered. “He was dope! He was the best rapper I’ve ever heard in my life. “He got on [Original Flavor’s] ‘Can I Get Open,’ and after that, me, personally, I decided to stop rapping and just start producing him solely.” Ski eventually would move on from working with Roc-A-Fella. According to the producer, he wanted to build his own Roc-A-Blok production company. Ski would build his discography with Camp Lo, Sporty Thievz and Pittsburgh Slim. He has recently hooked up with Dame Dash again, and put out his 24 Hour Karate School compilation in 2010 and its sequel, 24 Hour Karate School Part 2, in August. The new volume features Freddie Gibbs, L.E.P. Bogus Boys and Maybach Music Group signee Stalley. The previous album boasted features from Jay Electronica, the Cool Kids, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and Smoke Dza. While nothing can top working with Jay-Z, for Ski, these days it’s about discovering what’s new. “I love being able to still be relevant and being able to work with these cats: the Wiz Khalifas, the Smoke Dzas, the Dom Kennedys,” he said. Nicki Minaj And Lil’ Kim Are ‘RapFix’ Favorites For A Reason

Before appearing on Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live,’ Maino talks to Sway about the femcees’ appeal, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim Photo: MTV News / Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Maino Do the ladies run this mutha? After being deprived of rap femininity for a few years, it seems that women are once again a hot topic in the hip-hop conversation. Take Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” one-year anniversary show , for instance. Not only is Trina making an appearance, but in two separate pre-show fan polls, Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim are leading otherwise male-dominated categories. Minaj is currently leading for Best “RapFix Live” Freestyle , and the Queen Bee is the leading vote-getter in the Best “RapFix” Moment poll. It’s especially interesting considering that the two ladies were tangled in one of the biggest rap beefs of the year as well. Maino knows both Kim and Nicki, and when he appeared on Sway’s Shade 45 morning radio show, he broke down the talents of both. “I told her years ago that if I believed in any new female, I really felt like she actually had it because she rapped very feminine, she had a lot of style with her,” Maino said of his early interactions with Nicki. “I saw her coming years ago, way before her name was even Nicki Minaj. I saw her actually being able to do it.” When Maino first came into the game with his debut single “Rumors,” Lil’ Kim was an early supporter, helping him navigate his way through the industry. “Kim is legendary, man; household name that’s gonna last forever,” he said. “I just don’t think that she maintained the work ethic to maintain what we wanted her to have, and that’s to be in the spotlight continuously. Some people are not built for that 10-year run of nonstop working, like a Jay-Z.” The “Hi Hater” rapper said that, with today’s fans, the only thing that matters is current hits, and while Kim has a powerful catalog, she needs some new bangers to return her to rap prominence. “She took time off. When you take time off, you kind of hurt yourself, because in this game, they judge you by today,” he said before offering advice to his onetime collaborator: “Get back to making hot music, because at the end of the day, that’s all it is.” Catch Lloyd Banks, Maino, Trina and the Outlawz on the “RapFix Live” one-year anniversary show on Wednesday, September 14, at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com! Future Says Streetz Calling Will Be His Last Mixtape

Up-and-coming rapper says debut album is on the way, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Future Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Artist : Future Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : Streetz Calling Real Spit : There’s no question that when it comes to rap, Future is among the hottest up-and-comers. So fans of the Atlanta rapper’s mixtapes may be sad to learn that his recently released Streetz Calling will be his last solo tape. Not to worry, though, an album is on the way. “My mixtape, which will probably be my last solo mixtape, is 9/11: Streetz Calling, ” said Future, who recently announced his deal with L.A. Reid on Epic Label Group. ” 9/11: Streetz Calling with DJ Drama is supposed to be my last mixtape before I put my album out. My album is gonna be [titled] Pluto. ” Though he originally planned to release his mixtape on 9/11, Future had to instead drop Streetz Calling on Friday after the tape began to leak early. Tracks like “Made Myself a Boss,” the codeine-inspired “Easter Pink” and the chest-pounding “Name Hold Weight” exemplify Future’s penchant for spitting catchy hooks and relatable rhymes. The 2011 MTV Jams’ Fab Five inductee has earned many fans; even some of the game’s top rappers recognize his pedigree. “I wasn’t even ready for Drake to get on it, but when he called I was like, man, I was acceptin’ it with open arms,” Future said about Drizzy’s contribution to his “Tony Montana (Remix).” “He was just so far from where I’m at now, he’s so far [from] me, so for him to reach back down like, ‘Hey I want to get on your song,’ it was big on him. It just showed that he’s not out of the loop and I was in the loop.” Though Drake doesn’t actually appear on Streetz Calling, Future did manage to round up Gucci Mane and his A1/Free Bandz partner Rocko on a tape otherwise navigated by Future himself. Check back on Monday, September 19, to see Mixtape Daily ‘s full Streetz Calling segment with Future. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Game ‘Putting On Boxing Gloves,’ Producer Mars Says

The R.E.D. Album follow-up ‘coming along crazy,’ 1500 or Nothin’ producer tells Mixtape Daily . By Alvin Blanco La Mar “Mars” Edwards Photo: Victor Decolongon/ Getty Images Behind the Beats: Mars Don’t let his relatively young age fool you: La Mar “Mars” Edwards is already an accomplished production veteran at only 26 years old. The California native’s production discography includes placements with A-list clients like Kanye West , Snoop Dogg and Chris Brown , to name a few. Mars and some fellow church musicians started a band and officially formed 1500 or Nothin’ , now a conglomerate of sought-after songwriters and producers, shortly after high school. Mars linked up with T.I., who was looking to work on his own production craft, around 2004. “We had the same attorney,” Mars told Mixtape Daily about T.I. “Tip always did beats, but he didn’t have time to do it while he’s rapping and doing business stuff, so he talked to my attorney about finding somebody that could help him form a company and produce with him as well as somebody he could learn from and possibly teach some things to. It was a no brainer for my attorney. “I got out there [to Atlanta] on the next plane smoking that day. Ever since then, he treated me like a brother,” Mars continued. “He’ll call me to talk about life. It’s more to it than me being his production partner and having Smash Factory.” T.I. and Mars, along with Lil C, formed the Smash Factory in 2005. The production team has since hooked up tracks including Nelly’s “She’s So Fly” and T.I.’s “I Can’t Help It.” While Tip has been incarcerated, Mars has asserted himself, most recently by earning an executive producer credit, alongside the likes of Dr. Dre, on Game’s just-released The R.E.D. Album . Although he produced a good chunk of the album — including the Tyler, the Creator- and Lil Wayne-assisted “Martians vs. Goblins” and “California Dream” — he was still surprised about the distinction. Mars said the Compton rapper granted him the executive producer nod because “[Game] seeing that it wasn’t about trying to get however many songs or just going up there and sending beats and just leave like other producers would.” “I just wanted to be there every day to make sure there’s input,” he added. “Even if it was songs I didn’t produce, I made sure I was vocal about it. He respected different things I would suggest.” Mars continued, “We’d been working on The R.E.D. Album for three years. Just seeing my name on the credits right when you open the album, that was pretty exciting. As well as being in good company with Pharrell and Game and Dre, that’s the icing on the cake. Especially being a producer, growing up listening to their sounds and them being a big influence on my production.” As for his upcoming projects, Mars didn’t offer any details on the new Will Smith album he and 1500 or Nothin’ are reportedly creating. He did mention working on a 1500 or Nothin’ compilation album, on Snoop Dogg’s daughter’s album and on Game’s next album. “Me and Game was in the studio yesterday,” Mars revealed. “We did two songs. That’s coming along crazy. We’re going to have no features: It’s just him rapping. No name dropping, no little things people say is clich

French Montana Plans Throne-Style LP With Waka Flocka

French tells Mixtape Daily the joint album will drop in five weeks. By Rob Markman French Montana Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: French Montana Don’t expect rap’s tag-team trend to die anytime soon. In its first week, Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne moved more than 430,000 copies and snagged the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart. Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame also charted, selling more than 16,000 copies of their Ferrari Boyz LP. New York City’s French Montana is up next. “I got an album coming out with me and Waka. It’s called Lock Out. It’s gonna be out in five weeks,” French told Mixtape Daily of his new project. “The first single is called ‘I Want It.’ It’s crazy. It’s some crunk, like some ‘Choppa Down,’ but on steroids.” French rose to prominence in an unconventional way, first by creating the “Cocaine City” street DVD series, in which he showcased his music and the music of others. He has since collaborated with Akon, Max B, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame, making a name for himself in rap’s underground. Last year, Montana dropped “Choppa Down” with Waka, and now his current single, “Shot Caller,” is heating up the streets. While he isn’t currently signed, the former Konvict Music MC is planning the release of his debut LP. “I got that Excuse My French joint — it’s coming like late this year or early next year — but for now I’m just doing the street album,” he said before talking about the different contracts being thrown his way. “I ain’t gonna let the cat out the bag, but it’s about seven labels right now. So we’re just workin’, lookin’ for the best one.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists French Montana Waka Flocka Flame

Tiesto To Be Featured On Max Vangeli Podcast

Steve Angello’s Size Records will release Vangeli and AN21’s album, including single ‘People of the Night.’ By Akshay Bhansali Max Vangeli and AN21 Photo: The Windish Agency and Size Records House-music producing partners Max Vangeli and AN21 ascended the ranks in the dance music world through notable remixes and a knack for the blockbuster DJ swagger required to captivate thousands of people with a pair of decks at any given time.
