Carrie Fisher: Billie Lourd Honors Legendary Mom, Two Years Later

The late, great Carrie Fisher died on December 27, 2016. Fans mourned her, but her daughter Billie Lourd misses her most of all. Last year, she mourned and remembered Carrie . This year, she's doing something a little different. Billie Lourd is mourning the loss of her incomparable mother, Carrie Fisher, two years later. In an Instagram video that we have included for you, Billie sings a somber but beautiful tune. In the captions, she provides a little context. “It has been two years since my Momby’s death,” Billie begins. “And,” she admits. “I still don’t know what the “right” thing to do on a death anniversary is.” None of us who have grappled with the sudden loss of a loved one do. “(I’m sure a lot of you feel the same way about your loved ones),” Billie acknowledges. “So,” she writes. “I decided to do something a little vulnerable for me,” “But,” Billie continues, it is “something we both loved to do together – sing.” “This is the piano her father gave her,” she shares. “And this was one of her favorite songs.” Billie says: “And as the song says, 'we must “keep on moving.'” That is a helpful message. “I’ve found that what keeps me moving,” she shares. “Is doing things that make me happy,” She is absolutely right! No one's loved ones would want for them to be miserable on their behalf. Billie has found that she is in better spirits when she is “working hard on the things that I’m passionate about.” Right again. You get into the groove of whatever it is that you do, and you can't help but be a little happier. “And,” Billie writes, she thrives by “surrounding myself with people I love and making them smile.” That should be a very easy task for her. She is a delight. She continues: “I hope this encourages anyone feeling a little low or lost to 'keep on moving.'” “As my Momby once said, “'take your broken heart and turn it into art,'” Billie writes. Carrie very notably said and sang that line at her one-woman show, arguably the only one-woman show ever worth seeing. Billie encourages her fans and followers and fellow mourners to follow that advice: “whatever that art may be for you.” Great, now we're crying. Billie had a larger role in her mother's final Star Wars film. Carrie Fisher's sudden and tragic passing meant complications for filmmakers, who want to honor her legacy while still telling their story. The Last Jedi was also mired in controversy as a divisive film. Though the majority of audiences enjoyed the film, many people felt that it had problems with pacing, worldbuilding, and characterization. Unfortunately, more nuanced criticisms were drowned out by racists and misogynists who have a problem with women and people of color. Those monsters made discussion of the film difficult, and many feel that Carrie herself could have brought fans together. More than anything, people feel that Carrie's legacy deserves better than the controversy and perhaps better than that particular Star Wars film. But this isn't about the fans or about Star Wars , even though both were huge factors in Carrie's life. This is about her daughter. Billie Lourd is a young and dazzling talent, and Carrie was her mother. Is her mother. We all call Carrie Fisher space mom, but that's Billie's reality. Losing her — and losing her grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, the next day — was tragic and traumatic. Words cannot undo this terrible loss for her, but we wish the best for Billie.

Angelina Jolie: I Really May Run for President!

Joe Biden. Bernie Sanders. Kamala Harris. Angelina Jolie?!? In a new interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program, the ambitious actress admitted that she’s thought about running for President someday, presumably as a Democrat. Before you laugh, it’s worth remembering that Donald Trump is currently President of the United States. It’s true! You can look it up and everything! The morally questionable real estate mogul, who highest previous position was lead star of The Apprentice (a reality show on NBC) was elected leader of the free world in November of 2016. Ever since this depressing shocker transpired, stars such as Kanye West, Dwayne Johnson and Orpah Winfrey have pondered their own run at the White House, basically figuring: Sheesh, if frickin Donald Trump can win… So, why not Jolie? She serves as a special envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency; has traveled and lived around the world; and seemingly really has dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate. When the aforementioned program’s host, Justin Webb, said he had put her on a list of Democrats who might run in 2020, Jolie laughed and said, “Thank you.” From there, she didn’t exactly dismiss this as a possibility. The actress went on to say she would stay quiet “for now” because she feels she can “get a lot done without a title.” But then she didn’t stay quiet. She started to list her qualifications! “I’m able to work with governments, and I’m also able to work with militaries, and so I sit in a very interesting place of being able to get a lot done without a title and without it being about myself or my policies,” she explained. At one point, Jolie’s shady past may have prevented her from ever reaching the Oval Office. But Trump totally banged a porn star while married and then paid her hush money and no one seems to care. Given that context, would Jolie stealing Brad Pitt from Jennifer Aniston really be an obstacle in a Presidential run? “I don’t know if I’m fit for politics, but then I’ve also joked that I don’t know if I have a skeleton left in my closet,” Jolie told BBC here, adding: “I’m pretty open and out there, and I can take a lot on the chin. So that’s good. But I honestly will do whatever I think can really make change.” And the Winner is? Angelina Jolie Click Here To Vote for Angelina Brad Pitt Click Here To Vote for Brad You must choose one. Which of these stars would you prefer as Commander-in-Chief? View Poll » Jolie will serve an executive producer of a new BBC-run global English-language news program for children, scheduled to premiere in 2019. Aside from the fact that, like, 75% of women in the country despise her, the star’s resume really isn’t all that terrible for someone who may get into politics. Jolie ended her interview by saying it was important to her that the aforementioned project be global and “help young people in different countries to be connected to each other and to have greater awareness and understanding of the news on an international basis.” So there you have it. Angelina Jolie in 2020? Does she have your vote?

Jenni Harley Shares MAJOR Update on Autistic Son’s Development

It was only a month ago that Jenni “JWoww” Farley revealed her son's autism diagnosis . He has a major speech delay. If you watch JWoww's video, which we have included, you'll see that he has made some astounding personal progress in a very short time. Take a look and see little Greyson's powerful journey. Jenni “JWoww” Harley shared some news with her fans in November. Greyson Valor, she revealed, was “non-verbal.” He is autistic, and not all autistic people speak. He has since made great strides, for which she is immensely thankful. In a tribute video that she posted, she shows her son's progress. The dramatic results show how quickly a young child can change in a very short time, especially with speech therapist. What once had JWoww fearing that Greyson would never speak is now a speech delay. The vast majority of two-year-old children are happily speaking and living their best lives. Greyson took until he was a little older than two to show that he recognized his own name. JWoww's video begins with Greyson responding very little or not at all to auditory input. His mother calls his name, and he does not seem aware of it. (Audio processing is complicated, and sometimes works very differently for children and adults on the autistic spectrum) In another scene, he asks for food from his mother, but is unable to verbalize his request. Greyson hit some developmental milestones a little later than Jwoww had hoped. It's not that children on the autistic spectrum are necessarily less intelligent than neurotypical children in their age group. Instead, it's because autism — which is very complicated and comes in many forms — means that his mind processes things differently. The best analogy that comes to mind is traffic. If 90% of people take one route, someone who takes a very different route will arrive at a different time. Speech is complicated, and at times he might be too overwhelmed by other experiences to process what he's hearing, let alone what he is saying. But while some autistic folks remain nonverbal for life, that is not the case with Greyson. As the video reveals, Greyson has made great strides this year in terms of verbal communication. With a little prompting from his mother, Greyson blows a kiss with a very loud verbal “mwah!” In the same clip, in which he is seated in his car seat, he says “hi!” Then, we see Greyson chattering on his own. Many (very loving, very devoted) parents know how exhausting it can be to hear little children who speak nonstop. But to a parent who had feared just months earlier that their child would never speak at all, hearing him jabber feels like a miracle. Of course, rambling without being very intelligible is a far cry from actually speaking. But as we already knew, Greyson has been developing his vocabulary. JWoww's videos include the one that we shared in early December. Greyson, dressed as Dash from The Incredibles , repeats the names of colors on command. Some parents might not be blown away by a video of a child old enough to walk who is parroting their parents' words. But for Greyson, it shows that he doesn't just understand the words — he can also repeat them verbally and intelligibly. This is huge for him and very encouraging to those who love him. Greyson is autistic, and that is part of who he is. There is no “cure” for autism, only therapies to help them thrive in a neurotypical society. As an adult, he may never fully understand when it is and is not his turn to speak. Or, he may be uncomfortable making eye contact with people, especially while talking to them. But he may also be fine with both of those things. Some autistic folks go their entire lives without being diagnosed, and were just seen as “quirky” or “slow” or “awkward” as children. Everybody's a little different, and it's inspiring to see that JWoww has hope for her son's future.

STEM Pioneer Dr. Gladys West Inducted Into Air Force Hall Of Fame

A Black woman who played an integral role in pushing space exploration and technology forward is finally receiving the credit that she deserves. Dr. Gladys West —the mathematician who helped create the Geographical Positioning System—was recently inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame, The Hill reported. She joined the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory and served as a mathematician during a time where new technological systems were being introduced. She also contributed to groundbreaking studies surrounding different planets. “She participated in a path-breaking, award-winning astronomical study that proved, during the early 1960s, the regularity of Pluto’s motion relative to Neptune,” read a statement released by the Air Force Space Command. “The Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award pays tribute to the leaders of the early years of the Air Force space program, as well as the subsequent innovators whose vision and perseverance overcame the obstacles of the unknown, those who transformed the cutting edge of technology into operational systems, and those who dedicated their lives to exploring space in support of our national security concerns.” The stories of Black women who have made major contributions to STEM are coming to the forefront, and many of them are being honored for their achievements. Their legacies are inspiring the next generation of Black leaders who are interested in the field. Earlier this year 10-year-old Akosua Haynes , a young Black aspiring astronaut from Chicago, received a huge honor from the Library of Congress after penning a letter to the author of the book that inspired the film Hidden Figures ; detailing how the story motivated her. “I really want her to know how much her book inspired me and how it has really motivated me to push my math skills to a much higher level. I have a little STEM program on Saturdays and I’m trying to make myself more like Katherine Johnson every day,” she said. National Museum Of African American History And Culture To Display LeBron James’ Equality Sneakers

N BA star LeBron James has been an influential voice in the fight for social justice and now his efforts to spread awareness about social equality will be highlighted at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, NBC Washington reported. Lebron James’ Equality sneakers at the NMAAHC https://t.co/NBE1NSKpkp — NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) December 15, 2018 The black and white equality sneakers that James wore during a game against the Washington Wizards last year are heading to the Smithsonian, the news outlet writes. He donned the sneakers to express his disapproval of the racial division that Donald Trump has incited in our country. One sneaker was black, the other was white, and both had the word “equality” on them. The addition of the sneakers to the museum will add to the history and ongoing narrative of how athletes are using their platforms to bring attention to social justice issues. “When he wore the black and white pair, it’s something we paid attention to. Thinking about the significance of the shoes and LeBron’s contribution to fighting for social justice, we decided it would make sense and be a great opportunity to add these shoes into our collection,” Dr. Damion Thomas , who curates the sports exhibit at the museum, told USA Today . “One of our main goals is not just collect things with significant historical background and importance, but also think about the objects that allow us to engage in the contemporary questions and issues that the nation is grappling with.” The sneakers are slated to be featured at the museum this fall. This isn’t the first time that James has been involved with the museum. In 2016, he made a $2.5 million donation to the Muhammad Ali exhibit. “Every professional athlete, regardless of race and gender, owes a huge debt of gratitude to Muhammad Ali,” James said in a statement, according to the Huffington Post . “His legacy deserves to be studied and revered by every generation.” SEE ALSO: The NBA Is Back!
