Veteran Gavin Thomas back for Wales against New Zealand

• Dragons flanker to face All Blacks in first Test • Alun Wyn Jones and Andrew Bishop also start at Carisbrook Gavin Thomas, the 32-year-old who last played Test rugby in 2007, was today named by Wales in the starting XV for the international against the All Blacks on Saturday. The open-side flanker gets his chance in the first of two Tests in New Zealand because Martyn Williams was allowed to miss the tour and because his replacement, Sam Warburton, broke his jaw playing against the Springboks. The other change in the pack is the return of the lock Alun Wyn Jones, while Andrew Bishop replaces the centre James Hook, who is about to have surgery on his damaged shoulder. For those who thought Thomas’s return underlined the Welsh problem of lack of cover in some positions, the coach, Warren Gatland, was adamant: “Gavin Thomas is an experienced flanker who knows all about what it takes to perform at international level. He and Alun Wyn Jones have both impressed in training and deserve their chance this weekend.” The coach might also have mentioned that Thomas has been impressive for Newport Gwent Dragons this season after having his contract with Scarlets terminated. Thomas has also battled back from an achilles injury to produce some of his best rugby this season. Thomas, who made his international debut in 2001 and last played for Wales on the 2007 tour of Australia, admitted he had thought about retiring but after the Dragons lifeline was looking forward to his 23 Test “more than I have any others. I didn’t think it would happen, but it’s here and I need to do something about it”. “This is a performance I need to get right,” said Thomas after hearing that he would be going head-to-head with the All Black captain and inspiration, Richie McCaw. With Gethin Jenkins, Shane Williams, Andy Powell, Duncan Jones, and Luke Charteris also absent along with Martyn Williams and Hook the side had a predictable look to it. The Scarlets scrum-half Tavis Knoyle is likely to make his international debut at some stage and is joined by the Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar and fellow Scarlet Jonathan Davies in providing cover for the backline. “We are playing one of the best sides in the world at the moment on [their] home soil and they don’t come much bigger than this,” said Gatland. “But we are determined and there is a quiet self-belief creeping through the squad at the moment which makes me feel we are capable of producing a performance to be proud of against the All Blacks.” Given that the All Blacks trounced Ireland 66-28 last weekend, that might have sounded unrealistic if only because Wales have not beaten New Zealand in 57 years. However Gatland is relying on a core of experienced players such as Mike Phillips, Stephen Jones, Jamie Roberts, Adam Jones and Ryan Jones to provide an upset at Carisbrook. As from next year’s World Cup, Test rugby at Dunedin will be played indoors at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, and the All Blacks will not be upset to be moving after 102 years. In 2008 they lost 30-28 to South Africa and last year were beaten 27-22 by France. Wales: Byrne (Ospreys); Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues), Bishop (Ospreys), Roberts (Cardiff Blues), Prydie (Ospreys); S Jones (Scarlets), Phillips (Ospreys); James (Ospreys), Rees (Scarlets), A Jones (Ospreys), B Davies (Cardiff Blues), A W Jones (Ospreys), J Thomas (Ospreys), G Thomas (Newport Gwent Dragons), R Jones (Ospreys, capt). Replacements: Bennett (Ospreys), Yapp (Cardiff Blues), D

Gavin Thomas in Wales line-up to face New Zealand

• Flanker to end three-year exile from national side • ‘We are capable of producing a performance to be proud of’ Gavin Thomas’s exile from international rugby will end on Saturday after he was named in Wales’ starting line-up for the first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin. As expected, the 32-year-old, who has not played for Wales since the tour of Australia in 2007, has been named to start on the openside flank in one of three changes to the team that lost 34-31 to South Africa at the start of the month. The other change in the pack is lock Alun Wyn Jones who gets the nod ahead of Deiniol Jones, who moves to the bench. “Gavin Thomas is an experienced flanker who knows all about what it takes to perform at international level,” said the Wales coach, Warren Gatland. “He and Alun Wyn Jones have both impressed in training and deserve their chance this weekend.” Thomas gets his chance due to the absence of Martyn Williams, who is being rested, and Sam Warburton (out with a broken jaw) and will have no better opportunity to press his claims for World Cup selection after an impressive season with the Newport Gwent Dragons. In the back line Andrew Bishop comes in at centre in place of James Hook who has remained in Wales to have surgery on his shoulder. “Andrew has been one of the form centres in Wales this year and after helping the Ospreys lift the Magners League title was something of an unsung hero in their team,” said Gatland. Elsewhere on the bench, the Scarlets scrum-half Tavis Knoyle is in line to make his international debut if needed and is joined by the Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar and his fellow Scarlet Jonathan Davies in providing cover for the backline. Rob McCusker will once again provide the back row cover after stepping in when Andy Powell was ruled out against the Springboks in Cardiff. Powell, Williams and Hook are three of several top-line players missing through injury or unavailability for the two-Test series in New Zealand. Others who are absent include Gethin Jenkins, Tom Shanklin, Shane Williams, Luke Charteris and Duncan Jones. “We are playing one of the best sides in the world at the moment on home soil and they don’t come much bigger than this,” said Gatland. “But we are determined and there is a quiet self-belief creeping through the squad at the moment which makes me feel we are capable of producing a performance to be proud of against the All Blacks.” Wales only arrived in Dunedin today after choosing to do the bulk of their preparations in Wellington, where they will be playing South Africa in next year’s World Cup. New Zealand, fresh off a 66-28 rout of Ireland last weekend, have spent all week in Dunedin getting ready for what will be the final international at the famous Carisbrook ground after 102 years. From next year matches will be played at the under-construction, indoor Forsyth Barr Stadium. “It’s going to have a bit of emotion for the New Zealand team,” said Gatland. “It’s something I understand. It’s important that we front up mentally and physically for what’s hopefully going to be a really tough game.” Wales rugby union team Rugby union guardian.co.uk

Day Four

I have never experienced four days like this in my life. So much of the Convention had been planned for months and dreamed of for years, but nothing prepares you for the actual experience. Add to that the craziness of the week, and it made for an experience of a lifetime. The last night was very special to me because it featured both of my parents and allowed our entire family to share in the moment. People don’t always see or understand the challenges that a political family encounters; there are some difficult times along the way. But on Thursday night, my Mom and Dad’s hard work was recognized and celebrated in a way I’ve never seen before. I am so happy for them and I am so eager to watch the next 60 days unfold. I’m confident that my Dad will be an incredible President. Thanks to everyone who has helped us get this far. Your support is always a cherished part of my life. And a special thanks to my girls, Heather and Shannon. You guys are always there for me and that means more to me than you’ll ever know. Song of the Day: “Shut Up and Drive” by Rihanna

Big Boi Loses Head Over Buxom Beauty In New ‘Shutterbugg’ Video

The Outkast MC appears headless, rhyming and backed by band of puppets in funk-drenched clip. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by James “FLX” Smith Big Boi Photo: MTV News Big Boi is as cool as they come, but that doesn’t stop the slick-witted Outkast MC from losing his head over a buxom beauty in his new clip for “Shutterbugg,” which premiered online Thursday (May 27). In the Chris Robinson-directed video, a headless Big Boi is seen from behind, seated and dancing on a stool, while his leading lady clutches his disembodied, but still-rapping noggin. “Not to flex/ But to protect my neck/ Like the Wu-Tang,” Big Boi raps over the funk-drenched bounce. “Self-preservation is the rule when you do aim.” “The video concept basically accents different lines with the song,” Big Boi told MTV News earlier this month from the video’s Atlanta set. “It goes with the rhymes. Chris Robinson was definitely onboard [with the concept]. What he took from the song was a lyrical, visual adventure. There’s a lot of special stuff going on. He’s freaking the visuals like I’m freaking the rhymes.” In several scenes in the video, Big Boi can be seen rhyming on a mountain of sneakers, while an enormous pyramid of red disposable cups forms the backdrop. A group of musicians — made up entirely of puppets — serves as the Atlanta rapper’s backing band. Earlier this month, Big Boi talked about “Shutterbugg,” the lead single from his forthcoming solo effort, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, his first project with Def Jam, due in July. After dropping a few teaser selections, including the Gucci Mane-assisted “Shine Blockas” and “Royal Flush,” featuring Raekwon and Andre 3000, Big Boi is ready to move forward with his long-delayed LP via the Scott Storch-produced “Shutterbugg.” “It’s basically a cut that’s all about capturing the moment, whether it be your kid’s first steps or you got a Polaroid and you with your lady somewhere,” Big Boi said of his single. “It’s about capturing the moment and getting them good times. When you look at certain photos, it takes you back to the moment, and that’s what it’s about. It’s a funky, get-down, slap-your-sister-in-the-mouth jam.” What do you think about Big Boi’s new video?
