I Don’t Feel Good! Brian Grazer Says James Brown Biopic Is Ready To Start Casting

To paraphrase James Brown , I don’t feel good after reading Rolling Stone magazine’s interview with producer Brian Grazer about the status of the biopic that he and Mick Jagger are producing on the late soul singer. Now that the Hardest Working Man in Show Business’ estate has been put in order, Grazer says the picture is moving forward again after being in limbo for some time. Jagger has come on board as producer, which is a smart move given that he’s a student of Brown, but Grazer’s explanation of director Spike Lee’s departure from the project last fall and the subsequent hiring of The Help helmsman Tate Taylor doesn’t exactly boost my confidence level. Here’s what Grazer says: What happened with Spike Lee, who was said to be directing the original movie project before Brown’s death? He was the choice when I had the rights. I had just produced Inside Man with him. When the rights left me, I didn’t have any control, and I couldn’t make director choices. So when it came later with new people and new rights holders, we weren’t doing it with Spike Lee anymore. The world was different then. Now you have to make movies for less money. When it was announced that Lee was no longer involved and that a white director, Tate Taylor, was on board, the blogosphere went nuts. How do you respond to those comments? What would I say? I view that a bunch of different ways. Mick and I don’t see the world that way. I started my career making Boomerang and CB4 . I’ve made so many movies where I’ve supported black artists. Tate made The Help, and that had almost an entirely black population. I just want to try to make the best movie. Were you surprised by those reactions? Well, I didn’t read them! I can’t make movies like that, where I’m going to look at some blog and change the course of the whole movie. I also think Mick is so amazing. For him to decide he’s going to participate and split half the money – he’s a man of integrity, and I feel pretty good about that. I get that Grazer and Jagger want to make this an Important picture, which Brown most certainly deserves, but I fear that, given the creative path they’ve chosen, the grit of Brown’s life, which is so key to his portrayal, will be sacrificed for something more sanitized.  I hope Spike tweets his thoughts on this. Then again, as the saying goes, “shoulda, coulda, woulda” — the project is moving ahead with Taylor and Fair Game   screenwriters  John-Henry and Jez Butterworth, and Grazer says casting is about to begin: Do you think you’d cast a pop star or an actor who can sing or dance? We haven’t made any decisions yet. We’re going to start casting and we’re going to have to test lots of actors and be determined to pick the right one. No movie starts in a day. I’ve never loved a subject and not made the movie.  Friday Night Lights  took 13 years.  American Gangster  took seven or eight. Who do you think should play Brown? Put your picks in the comments section. ( Jamie Foxx , you can stop raising your hand now.)  Whoever it is, I hope Grazer and Jagger hire Prince to consult on this picture because he’s the only contemporary artist I can think of whose performances match the intensity, complexity and virtuosity of the ones Brown gave in his prime. The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap – The Donkey’s Back End

The Real Housewives of Atlanta learn the hard way how “The Donkey Kicks” when he doesn’t have a contract.  We recap how the donkey’s nickel and dime one another in our THG +/- review. So can Phaedra and Apollo really make this donkey booty video fly?  I’d be more confident if even they could get on the same page. Minus 12 .  Phaedra still says it’s for beginners but Apollo shot down that idea once before.   It’s been weeks and they still haven’t hammered out many details, between themselves or with Kenya.  But Kenya’s the little producer who could and she’s already gotten a distribution contract.  Plus 15. Unfortunately no one wants to pay her for it.  I’m not Kenya’s biggest fan but if she’s not getting a fee on the front then I can’t blame her for asking for a percentage on the back end.   Not so fast. Ms. Phaedra’s not willing to give up that 10%. And Kenya’s right. If Phaedra’s got something else in mind she needs to make a counter offer. Instead everyone is left in limbo. Minus 11. If they are the incredible business women they all claim to be, then why is this deal causing such angst? I love how Cynthia shut this whole thing down before it even started. Phaedra sends out some lame tweet about casting for her fitness video at the Bailey Agency and you can just hear Cynthia say, not so fast girl .   Cynthia’s not allowing her agency to get dragged into this without the money being hammered out up front so she cancels the casting call and puts Phaedra in her place. Plus 18.   For an attorney, Phaedra doesn’t seem to be communicating the details of this fitness video deal very well to any of her so called partners.  Something tells me that’s going to come back to bite her soon. Things are going much better for NeNe who is furnishing her home in the Hollywood HIlls. Plus 20. From exotic dancer to actress on a prime time sitcom, complete with our own trailer.  Nothing stops NeNe. But she does need to slow down and let Gregg take the reins, at least at home. Let’s see how the two of them handle the role reversal. Back in Atlanta, Kandi throws Todd a 39th birthday bash complete with helicopter tour of the city and a surprise visit from his Momma.  Plus 13. She even does one better when she shuts Kenya down for bringing up this ridiculous donkey booty video nonsense.  Why start trouble at Todd’s birthday party?  Plus 10 to Kandi. She’s having none of it.   One of the few signs we see of Porsha is her adoring husband bringing her breakfast in bed. Minus 14.   I’ve had enough of Porsha’s perfect life.   This donkey booty video controversy isn’t about to end any time soon.  Kenya’s $100,000 budget seems high for a fitness video and minus 9 for bragging about her $1000 shoes.  How on earth will she ever survive if she only gets to by the $500 pair?   And did Andy say something in a promo about Kenya singing?  Minus 30 .  The last thing anyone needs is yet another singing Housewife. Episode total = -10!                Season total = -142!

Britney Spears-Jason Trawick Split: Kids to Blame?

The long-awaited Britney Spears and Jason Trawick breakup reportedly happened because of kids … though not for the specific reason you might think. Britney, who is already mother to Sean Preston, 7, and Jayden James, 6, really wanted to have more children and Jason did not, according to reports. Jason Trawick, 41, is “just in another place” and does not want to start a family, although he loves Sean Preston, Jayden James and Britney Spears, 31. The former couple argued frequently about expanding their family since getting engaged in December 2011 and this ultimately proved their undoing. Sources also say dealing with Britney Spears – the money-making empire, not the woman – also wore at Jason and “took away his individuality.” The agent maintain his identity and one of the things he tried was to expand his business by taking on more clients … which didn’t sit well with Britney. Both Spears and Trawick say they will remain close going forward and this decision, while difficult, was mutual and agreed upon by mature adults. At least on paper, that appears true. The house Britney just bought for them for $8.5 million was purchased solely with her money and she’ll keep it. She always paid for the bulk of their lifestyle, but Jason also does well for himself and should continue to, so there’s no arguing over money whatsoever.

Citizens Unite: Republicans Who Voted ‘No’ On Sandy Relief Get Slammed With Angry Phone Calls!

Some 67 GOP members voted “No” on $9 billion in aid , and good ‘ole boy Paul Lyan was one of the heartless politicos who wouldn’t give additional assistance to victims in NJ and NY. SMH. Via the NY Daily Mail : Republican lawmakers who voted against the first Hurricane Sandy relief package scrambled to explain their votes as their offices were swamped Saturday by a deluge of angry phone calls from storm victims. Sixty-seven members of the House of Representatives, all Republicans, voted against the $9.7 billion funding package that will help the ailing federal flood insurance program to pay the legitimate claims of those impacted by the historic storm. Most of the lawmakers explained that they were making a statement not against the victims in the northeast states, which all lean Democratic, but rather the federal government’s bloated budget.”Being from South Carolina, I can understand the need for disaster relief,” said Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC). “However, we’re over $16 trillion in debt, and this bill did not offset the disaster relief funds with spending cuts in other areas.” Some of the representatives who voted against the measure on Friday hail from the Gulf Coast states that received billions of federal aid – some within two weeks – after being hit by Hurricane Katrina. “Of course, we are sympathetic to the hurricane victims,” said Laura Chambers, spokeswoman for Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS), who represents cities like Gulfport and Biloxi that were nearly washed away by the killer 2005 storm. “But on the heels of a fiscal cliff deal that added $4 trillion to our existing $16 trillion national debt, we must ensure that disaster relief is paid for,” she said. Staffers of several Congressional Republicans confirmed Saturday that their offices had received scores of angry calls and emails from people furious about their vote. The Daily News printed the office phone numbers of the 67 lawmakers who sided against the bill. That vote total – and the looming clash over the nation’s debt limit – could foreshadow a tougher fight to get the rest of the $60.4 billion package passed when it comes to a vote Jan. 15. The Club for Growth, a conservative lobbying group that advocates for limited government and low taxes, has already warned lawmakers that they would campaign against any candidate who votes for the aid bill. The group demanded that every dollar spent be offset by one cut from somewhere else in the federal budget. “It doesn’t help the nation to pass a giant, overpriced bill that isn’t paid for,” said group spokesman Barney Keller. “This is Congress’ fault. All we’re asking for is them to spend the money responsibly.” Damn…we’ve got some cold-hearted people up on Capitol Hill. Images via AP

Talkback: Should ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part II’ Sweep The Razzies?

As terribly easy as it is to hate on the Twilight films, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II was the best of the series. (Not that it was without its share of WTFery — imprinting and vampire fistfights and every second of Michael Sheen onscreen, anyone?) But with Breaking Dawn – Part II nominated for 11 Razzie Awards in just ten categories, up against the likes of Adam Sandler ‘s That’s My Boy , Eddie Murphy ‘s A Thousand Words , and the bizarro pop culture sensation / box office bomb The Oogieloves In Big Balloon Adventure , let’s be real: Does Twilight truly deserve to win all the Razzies? 2012 was rife with bigger targets for stinkbomb honors. Take the Worst Actor category, for example: Murphy’s turn in A Thousand Words as a man with a finite number of words to utter before death should give four-time nominee Robert Pattinson a run for his money, but Tyler Perry just might take it — and the Worst Actress prize, for which he’s also nominated for Madea’s Witness Protection . The pictures earning repeat scorn at the Razzies this year include blockbuster Battleship , which sucked Liam Neeson into the race to the bottom for his turn as a stern Navy officer and also earned Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker nods for their supporting work in the film. (If Decker doesn’t win, somebody get her a chicken burrito! Within five minutes!) It seems unfair to nominate performers who are playing themselves in obviously cheesy comedies, which is why David Hasselhoff in Piranha 3DD and Vanilla Ice in That’s My Boy cancel out of the Supporting Actor contest in my book. Meanwhile, the only nominee in this year’s crop who might actually take the Razzie honor as a warning sign to get a new agent is The Guilt Trip ‘s Barbra Streisand, who has been nominated thrice before — last year for Little Fockers , and three decades ago for 1981’s All Night Long and 1984’s Yentl . But let’s bring it back to the Worst Picture race. Battleship had its defenders, and Breaking Dawn – Part II was the best of the series. That’s My Boy scored worse the G-rated gyrations of Oogieloves on Rotten Tomatoes, but even Sandler shenanigans and dancing in the aisles to the sad sight and sound of C-list celebrities cashing paychecks didn’t hold a candle to the universally loathed A Thousand Words , which still stands at the elusive, ever-impressive 00 percent snake eyes on the Tomatometer. So which films and performances of 2012 really deserve that golden statuette? (Allow me to remind you what 00% on the Tomatometer looks like…) Full list of nominees: Worst Picture Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Director Sean Anders – That’s My Boy Peter Berg – Battleship Bill Condon – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Good Deeds / Madea’s Witness Protection John Putch – Atlas Shrugged: Part II Worst Actress Katherine Heigl – One for the Money Milla Jovovich – Resident Evil: Retribution Tyler Perry – Madea’s Witness Protection Kristen Stewart – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II / Snow White and the Huntsman Barbra Streisand – The Guilt Trip Worst Actor Nicolas Cage – Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance / Seeking Justice Eddie Murphy – A Thousand Words Robert Pattinson – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry – Alex Cross / Good Deeds Adam Sandler – That’s My Boy Worst Supporting Actress Jessica Biel – Playing For Keeps / Total Recall Brooklyn Decker – Battleship / What to Expect When You’re Expecting Ashley Greene – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Jennifer Lopez – What to Expect When You’re Expecting Rihanna – Battleship Worst Supporting Actor David Hasselhoff – Pirannha 3-DD Taylor Lautner – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Liam Neeson – Battleship / Wrath of the Titans Nick Swardson – That’s My Boy Vanilla Ice – That’s My Boy Worst Screen Ensemble Battleship The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure That’s My Boy The Twilight Saga: Eclipsed Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screenplay Atlas Shrugged Part II Battleship That’s My Boy A Thousand Words The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance Pirannha 3-DD Red Dawn Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Madea’s Witness Protection Worst Screen Couple Any two cast members from Jersy Shore in The Three Stooges Mackenzie Foy and Taylor Lautner in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II Tyler Perry and his drag in Madea’s Witness Protection Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, or Susan Sarandon in That’s My Boy [via Indiewire ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Venus Palermo: Living Doll Becomes YouTube Star, Controversy Magnet

Move over, Human Barbie . Here comes the Living Doll. At 15, Venus Palermo has grown into her doll obsession … sort of literally. Under the username Venus Angelic, the London teen posts beauty tutorials on YouTube. Living Doll Venus Palermo According to Venus, you too could be a ball-jointed doll (or BJD). Her doll-like appearance has turned her into an Internet star, and a magnet for controversy. Based on her 5 million viewers and a legion of Facebook fans, people take her advice on pupil contacts, plastic-sheen-effect powder, and white eye shadow to heart. But at what cost? The modern BJD is widely popular in Japan, which Venus is obsessed with. “Mommy cooks Japanese, thinks Japanese, goes to Japan with me,” writes Palermo on her blog. ” “Because we like it. Liking something, is soooooo GREAT!” Palermo’s obsession has attracted many a critic. Her videos have been called “bizarre” and “disturbing” in the media; her uncanny appearance is raising red flags. Perverse comments on the 15-year-old’s videos is proof she’s attracting unsavory fans. So is the occasional grown man trolling her Facebook page. But the teen’s mom doesn’t appear to be intervening in her daughter’s risky hobby. Mom serves as host of Q&A chats between teenager and fans. In one video posted last year, she sat by while the teenager chatted with a 24-year-old male who professed his love and then proceeded to belittle her. In text under that video, posted to VenusAngelic’s channel, Palermo refers to her fans as “lovers.” The title of the video is “Insane Guy in Love.” “The case of Venus Angelic is uncomfortably exploitative, as there is clearly a sexual undertone to what she is doing,” says Hilary Levey Friedman, PhD. “In general, young girls on YouTube is a disturbing, growing trend,” she says noting the recent trend of pre-teen girls asking viewers if they’re pretty. In many cases, parents are unaware of their child’s webcam usage, until their uploads go viral. But in other instances, the parents are facilitators. Levey Friedman wonders about Palermo’s mom’s aspirations for her, noting that Justin Bieber’s mom helped get his career get off the ground. The YouTube stage parent is relatively new concept. Most kids rise to viral fame for just being kids, and if a parent profits off of that they’re criticized. The rare performing prodigy, like Bieber, is an exception. Palermo doesn’t fall into either category. She may be bringing a Japanese trend to Western teens, but she’s also attracting a largely unwanted fan-base. What do you think? Harmless fun? Or too much, too soon?

Homeless Heir, Set to Inherit $19 Million, Dies

Timothy Henry Gray, a homeless man, died under a railroad overpass in Wyoming – just before learning he stood to inherit $19 million from a reclusive New Yorker. Eccentric Huguette Clark (pictured) who died in 2011 and left nothing of her $300 million fortune to her family in her will, but relatives challenged the document. That meant her great-nephew Gray, 60, stood to inherit $19 million. Sadly, children playing on sleds discovered Gray’s body in the snow on Thursday. The former cowboy died of hypothermia in the 10-degree Evanston, Wyoming weather. The death of his 104-year-old relative caused a flurry of media attention because of Clark’s wealth and reclusive nature, which evoked comparisons to Howard Hughes. She hadn’t even been photographed since 1930. Clark was the daughter of United States Senator and industrialist William Andrews Clark, who made a fortune in copper and other ventures. Although she dabbled in art and once exhibited her paintings, Clark distrusted family members and strangers because she feared they were after her money. The fate of her fortune is still unclear.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap – Strip No More

The Real Housewives of Atlanta “Press Down and Strip Bare” but I think we were all begging that some of these ladies would put their clothes back on. We break down all of the husband chasing and divorce rumors in THG’s +/- recap! NeNe meets up with Kenya after their trip. She wants to figure out if Kenya’s for real. Minus 10 . Duh. She’s really nuts is what she is. You’d think NeNe would have figured that out. Has anyone else had enough of the Kenya and Walter show? Minus 15 . What part of, this guy’s just not that into you , is Kenya not getting? I almost felt sorry for the guy. Kenya calls him aggressive when he was finally being honest with her.  She claims he yelled at her when all he did was tell her something she didn’t want to hear.  Have you noticed that Walter’s in his work uniform with the logo clearly visible about 50% of the time he’s on camera? Minus 14. Maybe I’m paranoid but could he be hanging on to Kenya for the free publicity? When Kenya says she wants to be married in six months Walter practically laughed in her face.  She claims she’s wife material, not just a girlfriend. Walter shoots back by asking if she’s really wife material, why is she still single at 40 something? Ouch!  Minus 20 . How much more of a shove does Kenya need before she realizes that this just isn’t happening. If Kenya is serious about having a baby, she may need to talk to NeNe about that turkey baster. Across town, Peter gets a text about Phaedra and Apollo’s supposed divorce.  Um…why is Peter getting gossip updates on his phone?   So Peter and Cynthia come up with a grand scheme. She’s heard that Apollo frequents strip clubs like some people visit Starbucks.  So let’s head to a strip club with Apollo and Phaedra and get all the dirt.  Plus 22 . There must be a hundred strip clubs in Atlanta, yet somehow they manage to find the skeeviest hole in the wall place possible. The strippers are jiggling rolls of cellulite. I can’t imagine that there’s enough alcohol to make that look good. While Phaedra’s yelling take it off, Peter’s begging keep it on.  LOL. Plus 9. I was actually relieved that they were drinking out of paper cups at the bar. Plus 11. I don’t think I’d want to drink out of a glass anyone else had touched in that establishment. Honestly, more dirt comes out days later when Apollo confides to Peter that, “I’m dealing with a God damn beast, man.”  and claims it takes a lunatic to deal with Phaedra. Apollo’s only 32 and he’s spent six years in prison. He sounds bitter that Phaedra’s keeping him from having his fun. Minus 10. When Apollo and Phaedra invite Kenya over to talk about their workout video it’s obvious the two are on different wave lengths.  He says Phaedra’s entire concept won’t work.  Minus 13 . Perhaps they could have had this discussion before Kenya got there. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Porsha who might just be the dumbest housewife of the bunch but she’s also the happiest.  She can’t even remember how many bedrooms her house has. It might be eight.  No wonder she’s shooting for twins. That’s a lot of rooms to fill. Plus 20 to Kandi for shooting down Porsha’s yam theory.  Watching Porsha try to wrap her mind around the concept of heredity and genetics was amusing. And finally there’s NeNe who is doing the money shot for Ebony magazine, literally.  She’s covered in cash and diamonds and posing for the cover of their Power 100 issue. Plus 25. From stripper to Power 100 cover girl. No matter what you think of Ms. NeNe, you can’t say she hasn’t come far. EPISODE TOTAL: +5! SEASON TOTAL: -172!
