Andrew Young Testifies Against John Edwards

Former aide Andrew Young, the star witness in the trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards, began his testimony against his former boss Monday. Edwards is accused of using hundreds of thousands of dollars from 101-year-old Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and Fred Baron to conceal his affair with Rielle Hunter . Young, testifying as the first witness Monday, said Mellon was an enthusiastic supporter who apologized for not being able to give more than $1 million. “She said she was close personal friends with Senators John and Bobby Kennedy and felt like Edwards was the best combination of them,” Young testified. Prosecutors say Edwards broke federal law by accepting about $725,000 from Mellon and more than $200,000 from Fred Baron, a now-deceased Texas lawyer. The money was used to pay for Rielle Hunter’s living and medical expenses, travel and accommodations to quash the scandal while he sought the presidency. Edwards is accused of concealing the money from the public and the Federal Election Commission, which polices political contributions, in the 2008 campaign. Federal prosecutors say he filed false and misleading campaign disclosure reports to do this, though Edwards denies any (legal) wrongdoing in the case. The defense argues the money he received from Mellon and Baron was for personal reasons – to protect Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, who was dying of cancer. Basically, he says he did it to hide his cheating from his family, and that the donors would have given the money regardless of these rare circumstances. Of course, by concealing it from his family, he also hid it from the public, and made a serious run at the White House in the process. Needless to say, the John Edwards trial represents a murky legal gray area. Young, who is married, initially claimed he was the father of Hunter’s child. He went on to become the author of The Politician: An Insider’s Account of John Edwards’s Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down . In the book, he accuses Edwards of using money from his rich benefactors to maintain his relationship with Hunter, breaking the law in the process. Edwards admitted to his affair with Hunter in 2008, after his presidential ambitions foundered. In 2010, he admitted he was the father of Hunter’s daughter.

Juvenile Down For Hot Boys Reunion With Lil Wayne

‘As long as Juvie living, it’s definitely possible,’ MC tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Juvenile on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Before Lil Wayne became the solo rap superstar he is today, he was making his mark as a member of a noted hip-hop group: The Hot Boys consisted of Juvenile , B.G., Turk and a teenaged Tunechi, and together they broke down doors for independent Southern artists everywhere by establishing Cash Money Records as a musical powerhouse. The quartet dropped their debut LP, Get It How U Live!!, in 1997, which they followed two years later with their platinum sophomore album, Guerilla Warfare, but the group was rendered defunct after Juvie, B.G. and Turk left Cash Money to take on new ventures. Fans have since longed for a reunion. On Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” Juvenile said of a reunion, “It’s possible. As long as Juvie living, it’s definitely possible.” Though he isn’t signed to YMCMB, Juvie maintains a relationship with both Wayne and Birdman. “I got a relationship with Cash Money; me and Baby still cool. We don’t talk every day, but we do talk, and we can stand in a room together. It’s not a situation where I’m beefed out with them,” he explained. Add DJ Khaled to the list of folks awaiting a comeback for the group. Sitting next to Juvenile on the “RapFix Live” couch, Khaled said, “I’m a fan first when it comes down to the Hot Boys, and it’s the whole Cash Money era, so Juvie already know and Bird already know, I would love to see that.” Unfortunately, there won’t be a full Hot Boys reunion any time soon because both Turk and B.G. are currently imprisoned. In 2005, Turk was convicted of multiple firearm-possession charges after a 2004 shooting incident with a police officer. In December of last year, B.G. plead guilty to felony weapons-possession charges stemming from a 2009 arrest. “B.G. got dealt a bad hand,” Juvie said. “He’d had his run-ins with the law through the years, so I guess this one caught up with him.” What’s your favorite Hot Boys song? On the Heels of Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus Catches the Indie Bug with Paris

Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus debuted her new HBO series Veep over the weekend, and she — along with husband/director Brad Hall — appears eager to add independent filmmaking to her repertoire. The pair hit the Tribeca Film Festival with their new short Picture Paris , teasing the project at an Apple Store event and hinting that this will not be their last foray into the indie space. Starring Dreyfus, the film follows a woman with an extraordinary obsession with Paris and a surprising past. “It was a way to dip our toes into the independent film world,” Dreyfus said at the event co-hosted by Indiewire. “It was like being in our old theater days, so we called in favors from friends and it was a great experience.” “The short is based on true life,” Hall added. “We had a kid heading off to college and it’s a major life-changing event. So I wrote a script by chance and I showed it to Julia. It has a good amount of twists and turns, and Julia said, ‘maybe we should just make it.'” Hall and Dreyfus are used to working together, but noted that this project allowed them to call the shots, which they are hoping to replicate on a future feature. “I’ve written other shorts about Paris,” Hall said, “but then we realized that we can’t really recoup our money making shorts, so we are going to do an independent feature, but keep the same group together.” Hall also contributed a complimentary gush about the French capital where they shot their short over six days, calling it “the Buenos Aires of Europe.” As for Veep , Dreyfus apologized for the onslaught of posters around New York City at the moment promoting the new HBO comedy in which she plays a fictional vice president of the United States. She said the show’s tagline is that the “buck stops somewhere near here,” but noted also that it is decidedly non-partisan. “This is a show about political behavior,” she said. “You’ll never see the actual president, and you’ll never know which party I belong to.” Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here .

Pay Up: Ray-J Ordered To Pay $30K After Blowing Off A Radio Appearance In South Carolina

Where is the money team now??? Via TMZ : Ray J is taking a 5-figure beating in court — because a judge has ordered the singer to pay more than $26,000 … after allegedly blowing off a radio appearance in South Carolina back in 2010. The SC station — called Cox Radio — originally sued Ray J, claiming it paid him $20,000 to MC at a local event for a couple hours … then attend a meet-and-greet with fans for another 30 minutes. But according to the lawsuit, Ray blew the entire thing off — and absconded with the money. A South Carolina judge ruled in favor of Cox radio because Ray never showed up, awarding it $25,100 — but Ray didn’t pay, so Cox took the judgment to Ray’s primary state of residence … California. The judgment has since swelled to $26,848.33. So far, no word back from Ray. More On Bossip! Can Spoilers Really Spoil ‘The Avengers’?

As the wait for the superhero flick grows more agonizing, the age-old debate crops up again: to spoil or not to spoil? By Josh Horowitz “Avengers” Photo: Marvel Over the weekend I was getting the shakes. And Tony Stark is to blame. I knew a whole bunch of folks had seen “The Avengers” last week (Los Angeles was host to its premiere last Wednesday) and, well, that wore on me. I don’t know why. I’d get to see it myself soon enough. And frankly, seeing it without knowing whatever Easter eggs were planted would probably only add to my eventual enjoyment, right? But it gnawed on me. Since I have little to no will power, it only took me a few minutes of searching the interweb to get just about every plot point ruined forever. Do I have a problem? Is it a problem? I’ll say this to those who say they want any and all movie spoilers kept from them — fearing the house of cards will come crashing down if they know the kid can see dead people or whatever: Spoilers can’t (or shouldn’t) ruin a film. Any film that rests on a third-act twist and the surprise it causes just isn’t all that great a film. Let me bring to mind another M. Night Shyamalan film, “Unbreakable,” a movie that blew my mind with a third-act revelation the first time I saw it. Now that I know what’s coming, does it make me love the movie any less? No. Another case in point, let’s journey back to 1983 and visit the 7-year-old version of me (shorter, that’s about the only difference) reading the comic adaptation of “Return of the Jedi” (back before the Internet comics and novelizations were the best bet for the spoiler-minded). Yup, I was the guy who knew every twist in the culmination of the greatest saga of my youth before stepping into the theater. Did I enjoy the film at all less than I would have going in blind? I truly don’t think so. My only regret actually is ruining the film for my brother in advance and that’s just because he hit me really hard as a result. Look, I know a lot of you disagree with me and trust me, we discuss spoilers an awful lot over here within the movies team at MTV. We know a lot of you want to enjoy a movie fresh without a third-act twist weighing on you throughout the flick. But we also live and breathe on breaking news, and if a certain A-list actor is going to appear in “21 Jump Street” (see, I’m being careful), it’s hard to ignore that. That’s news. So it’s a bit of a conundrum we face every single day. It’s probably the same for you if you’re reading this. You want to know just enough, am I right? But some of you are like me and wouldn’t mind knowing it all. Lately I’ve been wondering if we’ve become a society that’s more anxious for spoilers than ever. If I had to guess, the easy access to virtually any information on whatever mobile device is probably a big reason. Has the Ming dynasty come up in conversation again? Why, it’ll just take you about 10 seconds to find out what century it began in (the 14th, duh). We’re a culture that has now been conditioned to believe we can and should know anything. How much did “The Hunger Games” make in Nebraska last week? Hold on a second. I got that. How does Rihanna look on a beach when she’s hanging with friends? No problemo. What happens at the end of “The Avengers”? What do you mean I can’t know right now? Secrets are hard to keep in 2012. Which is probably why films like “Prometheus” and “The Dark Knight Rises” are my two most anticipated flicks at the moment (and I know I’m not alone). Take the final installment in the Batman trilogy for example. Despite being shot out and about on the streets of several major cities, I’d guess the number of folks who actually know how Christopher Nolan’s next film ends numbers in the dozens. OK, maybe a couple hundred. So I’m conflicted once again. I desperately want to know everything and yet I know it will be all the more satisfying to know nothing. Damn, I’m in the wrong business, aren’t I? Drake Proclaims ‘I’m A Proud Young Jewish Boy’ On ‘HYFR’ Set

Cash Money videographer Derrick G. catches up with Drake during his re-Bar Mitzvah. By Rob Markman Drake in his video for “HYVR” Photo: Universal “Money just changed everything.” Those are the words that opened Drake ‘s Thank Me Later album. Hell yeah, it changed everything. Just look at Drizzy’s recently released “HYFR” video as an example. In the Director X-helmed clip, Drake stages a second Bar Mitzvah to re-establish his commitment to the Jewish faith. “I’m proud, a proud young Jewish boy. When I had a Bar Mitzvah back in the day, my mom really didn’t have that much money. We kinda just did it in the basement of an Italian restaurant, which I guess is kinda like a faux pas,” Drake told Cash Money videographer Derrick G on the video’s Miami set. “I told myself that if I ever got rich, I’d throw myself a re-Bar Mitzvah. That’s the concept for the video.” Drake dropped some childhood party footage at the top of the “HYFR” video, and while it looked like a good time, we’re sure it paled in comparison to his adult Bar Mitzvah, which features Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Birdman and Trey Songz. The behind-the-scenes documentary shows the Toronto MC interacting with his YMCMB family and his real-life family. “I have some of my mother’s friends, some of my friends,” he said to the camera, gesturing toward Birdman and Khaled, who were seated in the Miami synagogue. “Stunna Man and Khaled had to come and show their support. I learned my Torah portions; they had to come hear me read it.” The set-visit video is filled with a ton of fun moments, but none more thrilling than when Lil Wayne performs his verse from the song. Weezy, who starts off in a suit and ski mask, begins to peel back his wardrobe with each passing rhyme until he is in a Truk Fit T-shirt, banging his skateboard across a banquet table. Birdman Jr. is clearly the life of the party. “Maybe in the world, there might be somebody crazier and more energetic and more talented, but I don’t know where the f— they’re at,” Drake said. “This guy gets on the camera every single time and kills that sh–. That’s why he’s Lil Wayne.” What did you think of Drake’s “HYFR” video? Share your review in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Drake Related Artists Drake

Mystikal Gets 81 Days In Jail For Probation Violation

Cash Money CEO Birdman confirms to MTV News that the label will continue to support the New Orleans rapper. By Nadeska Alexis Mystikal Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Getty Images Mystikal inked a new deal with Cash Money Records in December to release his upcoming sixth studio album, Original, but the New Orleans rapper will have to delay work on his LP due to legal troubles. Mystikal, born Michael Tyler, has been sentenced to three months in jail for probation violation. On Monday, Louisiana State District Judge Tony Marabella handed down the three-month sentence for the 41-year-old rapper, who was arrested in February and charged with a misdemeanor for domestic abuse battery. The arrest was in violation of his five-year probation, stemming from sexual battery and extortion charges that landed him in a Louisiana prison from 2004 to 2010 . A spokesperson for Cash Money CEO Birdman issued a statement to MTV News, confirming the label will continue to support Mystikal’s career, emphasizing that the arrest will not affect their relationship. Birdman’s rep added that Mystikal will turn himself in on May 14 to being the sentence, but he will only serve 81 days, since Marabella is crediting him for the nine days he spent behind bars after the February arrest. During a March visit to “RapFix Live,” Mystikal revealed a few details about his anticipated album, including an upcoming collaboration with Cash Money labelmates Drake and Busta Ryhmes. “I’m telling you, this album is gonna be so well worth the wait, Sway, believe that,” Mystikal told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “Busta [Rhymes] was one of the first artists I worked with when I first came home. Busta came out there, came all the way to Baton Rouge. I’m talking about we got it in.” In mid-March, Mystikal dropped the video for his album’s lead single, “Original,” which featured appearances from Lil Wayne and Birdman and gave fans a glimpse of the luxurious YMCMB lifestyle. Original will be Mystikal’s first album since 2001’s Tarantula. Related Videos Hurricane Mystikal Storms ‘RapFix’ Related Artists Mystikal

Last week, Sway welcomed Ace Hood and TDE’s Schoolboy Q on the red couch, but this week, he’ll have to make even more room because Future , DJ Khaled and Juvenile will all be stopping by to kick it Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. It’ll be quite the moment if the rap newcomer crosses paths with veteran MC Juvenile , who will also be in the studio. Juvie began his career as the shining star on Birdman’s Cash Money Records. His 1998 LP, 400 Degreez, was a pivotal hip-hop album and ultimately established Cash Money as a musical force to be reckoned with. It spawned singles like “Ha” and the rump-shaking “Back That Azz Up.” Juvie left CMR in 2002 and has largely carried on by himself. He dropped his last solo album, Beast Mode, in 2010 and earlier this year released his Mardi Gras mixtape with DJ Smallz. Now you can’t have a party without DJ Khaled . Since 2006, the Miami representative has been carving his lane as a hitmaker. On his debut LP, Listennn… the Album, Khaled paired artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Jadakiss and Beanie Sigel on high-powered collaborative cuts. He successfully improved on the formula through the years and has delivered with hit records like “I’m So Hood” featuring T-Pain, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy and Plies, as well as last year’s inescapable single “I’m On One” with Drake, Ross and Lil Wayne. Khaled’s latest track, “Take It to the Head,” partners Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj on a single track. His sixth studio album, Kiss the Ring, is due later this year.
