‘I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me,’ Pittsburgh MC tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Oh to be a kid again! For his debut album, Blue Slide Park, Mac Miller is paying homage to his childhood stomping grounds of Pittsburgh. The LP cover is a simple, child-like rendition of the playground, drawn by the rapper’s (born Malcolm McCormick) older brother, whose first name is actually Miller. “I knew I wanted to do something with it that was more than just a picture of me,” Mac told MTV News. “Blue Slide Park is a park in Pittsburgh we grew up at,” Miller explained to us about the album title’s significance. “Being 2, going down slides and then being 6, playing Little League and hanging out there, then being older, coming back there to drink and smoke and party, running from the cops. And now going back there just to chill out and drink a beer.” When Mac and his Most Dope team were seeking inspiration for the artwork, they consulted Google and came across a young girl’s drawing, which they eventually used as a basis for the cover design. “We came across this 8-year-old’s drawing and we were like, ‘Yo, that is like the most simple but incredible thing ever; it’s right to the point,’ ” he recalled. “Basically, the point is making something simple that can represent the whole idea. You look at it and it doesn’t look like a park, but you know that’s that Blue Slide Park.” The Blue Slide Cover is more Bob Ross than Rick Ross in its design. Deviating from more standard hip-hop cover art, the BSP front panel features a painting of multicolored triangles, with a big blue line right down the middle. To execute his vision, rather than go with famed hip-hop photogs like Jonathan Mannion or Danny Clinch, Mac recruited his big brother. “He’s always worked on art as long as I can remember,” Mac said. “He draws all the time and he’s getting into graphic design. If I can have my brother work on something for it, that’s great.” Mac Miller’s Blue Slide Park is due in stores November 8. What do you think of Mac Miller’s album cover? Tell us in the comments! Former No Limit MC says, ‘My star is still out there in the stratosphere.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by James “FLX” Smith Mystikal Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Mystikal has more to celebrate these days. Not only is the New Orleans rapper expecting the birth of a baby boy, the Tarantula has new music on the way and just turned 41 years old. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Mystikal, who was released from prison in January 2010 after a six-year incarceration stemming from charges of sexual battery, extortion and failing to file tax returns. But Thursday, Mystikal was all smiles as he performed at his own birthday bash at the Sha-La club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “I’m in the process of rebranding everything,” he told MTV News. “My star is still out there in the stratosphere; I just gotta get the spiderwebs off of it and shine it back up. That’s it — simple as that.” Part of that process is getting back in the studio. Though he hasn’t released an album since 2001, last year Mystikal hooked up with former Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh , and the two have been slowly cooking up new material. “We been working. Last couple of weeks, we been coming with some monsters in that studio,” Mystikal said before describing his plan for 2011: “I still gotta give them that vintage me, because that’s what I am, but I found a way to kinda bring it up to speed and still be contemporary.” Not that Mystikal is ignoring his legacy in the slightest. The former No Limit star performed a string of hits Thursday. “That wasn’t really a whole bunch of new material, that was vintage Mystikal,” he said. “It just reminds them of a moment in time when things were alright. Everybody remember that moment when “Here I Go” or “Shake it Fast” or “Make ‘Em Say Uhh” — they remember that.” Are you excited to hear new music from Mystikal? Tell us in the comments! Channel 2 Action News has obtained a surveillance video that shows the June 2010 break-in at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that preceded the sexual misconduct lawsuit against Bishop Eddie Long . Burglary charges were dropped against former church security guard Anthony Boyd, who told Channel 2 that the video proved he was not involved. Boyd and Maurice Robinson were arrested in June 2010 and charged with burglary. Robinson accepted a deal to enter a pre-trial diversion program in exchange for having the charges dismissed. Boyd chose to fight the charges. Robinson and three other men later settled a sexual misconduct lawsuit against Long for an undisclosed sum. Boyd was not involved in the lawsuit. The trailer gives out a lot of plot details, but fans of the book will be thrilled to see Mikhail and Lisbeth in action. By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” Photo: Columbia Pictures The teaser trailer for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” didn’t divulge much about the murder mystery at the center of the flick, trading story details for darkly cool imagery and a badass Led Zeppelin cover courtesy of Trent Reznor , Atticus Ross and Karen O. The latest “Dragon Tattoo” trailer takes a wildly different approach, running four minutes and diving deeply into the lives of Mikhail Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) and Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), the two Swedes at the center of this tale about a 40-year-old cold case of a missing girl and a rich, dysfunctional family. It’s hard to argue the new footage is too spoiler heavy, considering the ubiquity of the international best-selling Stieg Larsson novel on which the film is based. Let’s just say that there is a ton to unpack in the new trailer. Here are our picks for the five key scenes: The Family Dinner While Larsson’s book is set in contemporary times, its story is inextricably tied to the past, to events surrounding the disappearance and suspected murder of Harriet Vanger, a teenange girl and scion of a wealthy family with dark secrets. Blomkvist and Salander are charged with cracking the decades-old case and largely rely on vintage photographs to assist their investigation. This scene, a glimpse of the Vanger family in the 1960s, shows that director David Fincher is using these weathered photos as the visual inspiration for flashbacks. The almost sepia-toned aesthetic differentiates the gritty present from the vintage-y past, and makes the connection that past events, captured in photos, will be the mechanism allowing Blomkvist and Salander to undercover the truth. The Flowers For those unfamiliar with the novel, this scene — in which Blomkvist and Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), who hires the journalist to investigate his niece’s disappearance — unveils the first creepy clue of the story. Henrik has been receiving pressed flowers, in frames, for years. He’s certain they’re taunts from Harriet’s killer, as the young girl used to present such gifts to her uncle. It turns out that Blomkvist himself has a connection to the Vanger clan, as he spent time as a young child on the family’s remote estate. Taken together, these representations of the past — both in the form of memories and in physical frames — spur the reluctant journalist to take on the assignment. Well, that and the fact that he’s recently suffered a profound professional humiliation and Henrik is offering him a lucrative payout. The Genius To assist him in the investigation, Blomkvist hires Salander, a young woman with a history of being institutionalized and underestimated. The truth is, she’s a brilliant hacker with a photographic memory, as this scene makes clear. Blomkvist shows her a key piece of evidence — a set of names and phone numbers from Harriet’s diary — but she needn’t take another look. Salander has already memorized the information. Blomkvist realizes he’s picked the perfect partner. And he also doesn’t complain that she’s strikingly beautiful; the journalist is something of a ladies’ man, and this duo ends up having success both on the case and in the bedroom. The Photo As we said above, photos are the key clues in this case. Here we see evidence of Blomkvist and Salander’s big break, tthe photo that unlocks everything. In the book, it’s an enormously satisfying moment. After hitting roadblock after roadblock, the case finally picks up momentum, and the rest of the story proceeds at a breakneck pace. So head’s up: Once this scene plays out in the film, hold onto your seat — it’s going to get crazy and violent and freaky from here on out. The Rape That’s not to say there’s not plenty of crazy and freaky violence before that photo pops up. This quick shot shows Salander exacting some well-deserved revenge on Nils Bjurman, the sadistic lawyer who oversees her casework. Earlier in the trailer, we see Bjurman explaining to Salander that his assistance comes hand-in-hand with his unwanted sexual advances. Eventually Salander pays him back for his perversions: Bjurman, meet ball gag. It’s gruesome stuff. And it shows how Salander may look meek and helpless, but when she’s backed into a corner she can come up with some of the most creative and brutal acts of vengeance imaginable. Actor will reportedly reteam with director Nicolas Winding Refn for several projects including a possible ‘Logan’s Run’ remake. By Eric Ditzian Ryan Gosling Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Ryan Gosling ‘s “Drive” didn’t exactly zip away from the multiplex this weekend with a hefty box-office haul, grossing only $11 million. That’s a respectable sum for a Cannes darling — less high-octane thriller than slow-burning, tension-filled drama — that was always going to have trouble finding a mainstream audience. But we certainly haven’t heard the last of “Drive,” which remains likely to be a player come awards season, with Gosling potentially nabbing actor nods and helmer Nicolas Winding Refn looking to pick up other wins on the heels of his Cannes directing award. Gosling, for his part, will have some serious competition … from himself: The actor’s “Ides of March” is also sure to be in the mix come the fall. Whatever happens, Gosling is going to be busy from now through awards season and far, far beyond. “Ides Of March” Hitting theaters in October after a festival run this month, “Ides” features Gosling as an idealistic press secretary to a charismatic Ohio governor played by George Clooney , who also wrote and directed the project. The talent in front of and behind the camera made for a buzzy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, but a crowded field that includes the likes of Steven Spielberg, Stephen Daldry, Woody Allen and Tate Taylor (with his sleeper hit “The Help”) leaves an uncertain awards-season path for “Ides.” “The Place Beyond The Pines” Perhaps we’ve just got “Drive” on the mind, but this project sounds strangely similar to Gosling’s latest. He stars as a motorcycle stunt driver who contemplates committing a crime to benefit his loved ones. At least he looks far different: We recently spotted Gosling on set rocking bleached blond hair and a tattoo under one eye. Costarring Rose Byrne, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, there’s no word yet on a release date or festival debut. “The Gangster Squad” Production on Ruben Fleischer’s (“Zombieland”) third feature kicked off earlier this month with an all-star cast in place, including Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Set in post-World War II Los Angeles, the story focuses on the city’s battles against the infiltration of the East Coast mob. Gosling plays a member of the LAPD — a suavely dressed one at that, as some early set photos made clear. “Only God Forgives” Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. Luke Evans was initially set to star in this flick about boxing and prostitution in Bangkok, but the actor had to drop out because of his commitment to the two “Hobbit” films. Gosling reportedly stepped in, with shooting expected to begin in November and an eye on a theatrical release in the second half of 2012, according to Variety . “Logan’s Run” No, seriously: Gosling and Refn can’t get enough of each other. They’re planning on a remake of this 1976 sci-fi classic, with Gosling playing the starring role of a guy living in a dystopian world where no one is allowed to live past the age of 30. The project has long been in development, with directors like Bryan Singer coming and going. Fingers crossed that Gosling and Refn can succeed where others have fallen short. Untitled Romantic Comedy You know the drill by now: Gosling and Refn, together again. Possibly. We know precious little about this project, other than Refn wants to direct, Gosling could star and both men want “Drive” costar Albert Brooks to pen the screenplay. Hey, we’ll bite. “It’s a romantic comedy set in New York, which seems like a great place to start,” Refn told the Los Angeles Times . “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” This one is pure rumor at this point, but reports have suggested Warner Bros. is looking to pair director Steven Soderbergh with a young Hollywood star for this long-gestating adaptation of the ’60s-era spy series. Gosling’s name has come up alongside those of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsg
