Ja Rule Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion

Rapper, who is headed to jail on a weapons charge, admitted that he failed to pay taxes on $4 million in income. By Gil Kaufman Ja Rule Photo: Mark Mainz/Getty Images Queens rapper Ja Rule pleaded guilty to tax evasion in federal court in New Jersey on Tuesday, admitting that he had failed to pay taxes on more than $4 million in income. According to the Associated Press , the platinum-selling MC (born Jeffrey Atkins) earned the money between 2004 and 2006 while he lived in an upscale northern New Jersey enclave. The plea deal included an agreement by prosecutors to dismiss two counts of unpaid taxes on income earned in 2007 and 2008. Rule, 35, will be sentenced on the three remaining tax evasion charges in June and faces up to one year in prison and $100,000 in fines on each count. Ja Rule pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession in December, stemming from a July 2007 arrest, but his prison sentencing was delayed earlier this month so he could get his finances in order. Lil Wayne, who Ja Rule performed with on that July night at the Cash Money star’s Beacon Theater show, was arrested on the same night and eventually served eight months in prison for the same offense. Rule is now slated to be sentenced on June 8 and has agreed to a two-year prison term in that case. At the time of the sentencing postponement, Rule’s lawyer said the delay would allow her client to resolve his tax issue and maybe work on his next musical project as well. “We want to finish the album, and there’s also a tax issue,” lawyer Stacey Richman said. “Somebody, an accountant, had filed an incorrect form, and this is to correct what was done in the past.” Related Artists Ja Rule

Petey Pablo Pleads Guilty To Gun Charges, Faces Up To 10 Years In Jail

Rapper was arrested in September for trying to board a plane with a firearm. By MTV News staff Petey Pablo Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage North Carolina rapper Petey Pablo faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to gun charges from trying to board a plane with a firearm on September 11, 2010, according to The Associated Press. According to original reports, Pablo (born Moses Barrett III) was arrested when security at Raleigh-Durham International Airport found a Smith & Wesson 639 in his carry-on luggage. According to reports, the rapper was on his way to Los Angeles to attend the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Pablo claimed he didn’t know the gun was in the bag but was still charged with possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and attempting to take a gun onto an aircraft. On Wednesday, the rapper — who is best known for his singles “Raise Up” and “Freek-a-Leek” — reached an agreement and pleaded guilty to the possession of a stolen firearm charge. The remaining two charges were dropped and the rapper faces sentencing in June. Prior to making his rap debut, Pablo served six years of a 14-year jail bid for armed robbery. In 2001, he released his debut album, Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry, and saw the LP’s single “Raise Up” peak at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Three years later in 2004, he once again rose to prominence thanks to his hit single “Freek-a-Leek” (#7 on the Hot 100) from his sophomore album Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry. That same year, Pablo appeared on R&B singer Ciara’s breakout single “Goodies.” He reappeared with a meager hit in “Show Me the Money,” a song from the soundtrack to the 2006 film “Step Up,” but Pablo has made little to no musical noise since.

Lil Wayne Brings His ‘Whole Clique’ On I Am Music II Tour

With Nicki Minaj, Lil Twist and others on the road with him, Wayne says he’s got ‘the toughest team in the game right now.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne performs on Wednesday in Providence, Rhode Island Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images Lil Wayne is a superstar act, but the New Orleans MC isn’t just a solo package. When he hits the stage at his I Am Music II showcase, he has his Young Money crew in tow, including Nicki Minaj, Lil Twist, Mack Maine, Jae Millz and Shanell. It’s a lesson the Cash Money Records artist learned from watching Bad Boy and Roc-a-Fella treks in the past. “That’s where I get my little oomph from, when I bring my whole clique out there, and I want them to be heard,” Wayne told MTV News. “I remember when [Bad Boy] had Total, Biggie, Ma$e, Junior Mafia, all of them other people. Then you think of the Roc. We’re more so like the Roc. ‘Cause Jay always had artists the world didn’t know, but he put them on the proper song and everybody knows the song. But this time around, I want you to know the song, I want you to know the person, I want you to know us. And it’s no secret about it, I got the toughest team in the game right now and later.” On Wednesday, Weezy kicked off the sequel to his successful I Am Music II Tour. The show is set to run for 31 days, and throughout, he’ll be joined by Rick Ross and Travis Barker with DJ Mix Master Mike. Drake, Tyga and the rest of Wayne’s YM family are expected to drop in for select dates. Wayne is touring in support of his forthcoming Tha Carter IV album , which he says is due in stores and online May 16. TRAILER: Could Friends with Benefits Be the Movie No Strings Attached Wished It Was?

Confession time: I love Justin Timberlake. Not his music career, mind you — though who doesn’t love a little ” Rock Your Body ” every once in a while — but his acting one. You can grumble that he jumped the shark with endless appearances on SNL and his performance as himself — er, Sean Parker in The Social Network , but for my money, Timberlake constantly hits it out of the park. He even makes something as disposable as Bad Teacher look moderately watchable in a “Let’s wait to see it on a Wednesday night on HBO2 !” sort of way. All of which is a long way around saying that his presence in Friends with Benefits is key to making this summer rom-com look positively charming.
