Mayor takes $90,000 pay cut to help struggling Mississippi city

CNN) — The city of Biloxi, Mississippi, is in a financial rut. Its sales and gaming taxes have been sliding for two years. So the mayor is voluntarily taking a $90,000 pay cut and will supplement his income with retirement money. “I just thought it was the right thing to do,” said Mayor A.J. Holloway, who will earn $27,000 a year after the cut. The nationwide economic gloom has affected Biloxi, which was a tourist hot spot before Hurricane Katrina ripped waterfront properties apart in 2005. “We lost a lot of our businesses along Highway 90,” Holloway said. Many of those businesses decided not to rebuild along the scenic “Beach Boulevard” and relocated to other cities, far from the threat of a storm surge. The moves left the town struggling economically. Holloway proposed ideas on ways to reduce the budget, including new taxes. The city pays 100 percent of its employees' health benefits, in addition to coverage for dependents. The mayor suggested having the employees foot part of the bill for dependents. City council officials voted against both ideas. The city took out a loan with a $6 million line of credit just to meet payrolls. Biloxi subsidizes a regional airport about $115,000 a year, but can no longer do that. The same goes for various health agencies and nonprofits. Holloway said he will likely have to order furloughs for city employees. Meanwhile, the mayor is willing to put his money where his mouth is with an 80 percent pay cut that will free up thousands for the city budget. The city council is reviewing the budget proposals this month. If the budget is approved, he plans to keep his old schedule despite the new pay. “Frankly, I enjoy the work,” Holloway said. “And we have a great deal more to accomplish. I could go for another six to eight years.” And, the mayor says, the pay cut is not part of a re-election strategy. “I'm in my second year of my fifth term, so I have nearly three more years before I would be running for re-election,” he said. Despite the gloomy economic outlook, there are a few bright spots for Biloxi. The city was not affected by the oil spill that left millions of barrels of crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. “We got some tar patties and some tar balls in spots,” Holloway said. But Biloxi never had to close its beaches. http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/01/mississippi.mayor.pay.cut/index.html?hpt=C2 added by: onemalefla

Is Drake Dropping A New Album This Year?

Young Money’s Mack Maine says a quick album turnaround ‘makes sense’ for Drizzy, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ Getty Images The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive It was spring 1998. DMX was the hottest cat in hip-hop and released his SoundScan-murdering debut LP It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot. That winter, X came right back with another scorcher, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood. OK, speed up 12 years. We all know about Drake’s popularity. His debut, Thank Me Later, came out this past spring, and believe it or not, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Drizzy could come right back with another album just in time for Christmas. “Drake’s crazy,” Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News last week. “He’s doing a mixtape right now. He called me one night, like 2 in the morning. He has the intro done for the new album. We was discussing dates where he should come back. That’ll be soon. And this mixtape, he’s gonna put that out quick. His formula is crazy. He works fast. I can’t give the secret away to the formula. He’s a musical genius. The way he and [producer] 40 put things together is crazy.” When we asked Mack if Drake was putting out another LP before next summer, he simply said, “Real possible! What we discussed, definitely, what me and him discussed.” Such a quick turnaround between Thank Me Later and its follow-up is a simple case of supply and demand. “It makes sense,” Mack said. “Like DMX and those guys [at Def Jam]. They dropped two in one year. I think 50 [Cent] did two in one year. If it wasn’t a year, it was right around that time. [Drake’s] hot like that. Why not? Give them what they want.” When asked if Drizzy would have an album in the marketplace in time for it to be a stocking stuffer around the holidays, Mack Mizzle smiled and advised us to “expect the unexpected.” Regardless of when the new LP comes out, all signs point toward Drake’s R&B mixtape , It’s Never Enough, to come this year. There has been a smattering of Drake records popping up randomly on the Internet recently, such as “What If I Kissed You.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Obama: ‘I Can’t Spend All My Time With My Birth Certificate Plastered On My Forehead’

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams that aired yesterday, President Obama addressed the lingering rumors about his birth and religion, condemning what he calls a “network of misinformation” and taking a swipe at the birther movement. “We went through some of this during the campaign,” Obama said in response to a question about the rising number of Americans who think he's a Muslim. “There is a mechanism, a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out their constantly.” “I will always put my money on the American people and I'm not going to be worrying too much about whatever rumors are floating out there,” Obama said. Even facing the beliefs of a number of Americans “as sizable as this?” Williams asked. “I can't spend all my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead. The facts are the facts,” Obama responded. added by: TimALoftis

Glenn Beck Condemns Obama’s Christianity, Calls for "Religious Revival"

Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, conservative talk show host Glenn Beck led what turned out to be a largely religious rally, calling on the assembled crowds to bring America back to God. The event took place on the forty-seventh anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legendary “I Have A Dream” speech, leading to sharp criticisms of Beck for dishonoring Dr. King's memory, and the memory of that day. And indeed, as many have already pointed out, the racial dynamics of Beck's mostly-white rally and the much smaller but heavily African-American protest rally, led by Al Sharpton, seemed to provide a potent illustration of how far the country has yet to come. Religion has slipped its way into recent media discourses, mostly because of the Park51 Center controversy and the revelation that disturbing number of Americans believe Barack Obama to be a Muslim. But many of these discourses have centered on the othering of American Muslims, which is why I was surprised to see a new twist in Beck's discussion of Obama's religion. Beck's new line is that while Obama may not be a Muslim, he is certainly a bad Christian. Specifically, Beck charged that Obama adhered to “liberation theology,” a Catholic movement aligned with Marxism that originated in Latin America in the 1950's and '60s. This morning, debriefing the rally on Fox News, Beck half-heartedly retracted an accusation of racism hurled at Obama last summer, saying that he had a “big fat mouth sometimes” (he may tie Dr. Laura for best non-apology of the year), but added that he made the comment because he “didn't understand Obama's theology.” Obama, Beck said, subscribed to liberation theology, which he described as centered on “oppressor and victim.” This is not, Beck claimed, a theology which many Christians follow, because it is, in his words, the “direct opposite of what the gospel is talking about. It's Marxism disguised as religion.” Beck took this complex theological discussion a little further, saying that while Obama believed that “your salvation is directly tied to collective salvation,” while Beck (and all good Christians) believed that “Jesus came for personal salvation.” Beck said “people aren't recognizing [Obama's] version of Christianity.” Liberation theology is not a new subject for Beck, who devoted an entire episode last July to attacking the idea that Jesus was a victim. “Social justice,” Beck said, “isn't in the Bible…Jesus was a conqueror. Jesus conquered death.” Beck's deep misunderstanding of both liberation theology and much of Christianity itself are obvious in these remarks, and illustrate the extent to which Beck is willing to harness religious rhetoric for political aims. I don't know whether Obama subscribes to liberation theology, but if he does, it's in theory rather than in practice, because the movement itself has very little political influence today. His beliefs correspond to a basic tenet of Christianity: the obligation of the Christian to care for others. This is repeated throughout the New Testament, from Matthew 25:40 (“Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me [Christ]”) to Paul's epistle to the Romans, where he writes, “We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.” This doesn't seem to jive with Beck's assertion that because Christians believe that they are saved through God's grace, this translates into an exclusively personal vision of salvation. In an interview on Religious Dispatches, Union Theological Seminary president Serene Jones addressed Glenn Beck's bizarre formation of grace, saying, “Just as grace reminds us as individuals that there is nothing we can do to earn the love of God—that it is simply poured out upon us—so too it reminds us that at a political level, the minute we start constructing political structures that we think are unambiguously right, we are making our own politics into God. Nobody does that more than Glenn Beck.” Obama's interpretation of Christianity is not radical – and it is in fact Glenn Beck who is deeply out of sync with fundamental Christian ideals. When asked, on Fox News, how he would respond to critics of his wealth, Beck responded “the money doesn't matter.” It's hard to believe that Beck hasn't read the gospel of Matthew, where Christ says to a young man, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give the money to the poor” (Matt. 19:21), but from his comments, it seems that he's never bothered to read or wrestle with the scriptures that he seems so eager for Americans to embrace. Perhaps it would be best for Beck simply to listen to Martin Luther King, Jr., who wrote, “Any religion that professes to be concerned about the souls of men and is not concerned about the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them and the social conditions that cripple them is a spiritually moribund religion awaiting burial.” Is Beck's God the one that we want America to turn toward? And is Beck's Christianity one that Christ would recognize? added by: pinkpanther

Mandy Moore’s ‘Tangled’ Heroine Not ‘Typical Disney Princess’

‘She’s very independent,’ actress/singer tells MTV News of new Rapunzel. By Kara Warner “Tangled” Photo: Disney While the fall-to-Thanksgiving film season is usually rife with Oscar bait, it’s also prime time for releasing family films. One such movie is the highly anticipated “Tangled,” Disney’s updated and traditionally animated take on Rapunzel, starring the vocal talents of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. Kicking off our Fall Movie Preview, we bring you a delightful chat we had with the ever-gracious and lovely Moore, during which she discussed non-typical femmes fatales, singing in front of a 65-piece orchestra and Levi’s powerful pipes. MTV : How is Rapunzel different from the typical femme-fatale characters? Mandy Moore : She’s not the typical femme fatale or the typical Disney princess even, because: A) She doesn’t know she’s a princess. I think she sort of has this inkling that something isn’t quite right in her life, [but] she’s just really sort of motivated to find out what else is out there beyond this crazy tower she’s lived in for 18 years. Having said that, she’s very independent, she can take care of herself, and she’s definitely come up with really entertaining ways to keep herself busy. MTV : Is the Disney take on Rapunzel the same as the original fairy tale? Moore : Pretty much. She has an overprotective mother who tells her she’s not missing out on anything, and it’s a big bad world out there and it’s too scary and dangerous and she’ll be eaten alive, literally, if she decides to venture out into the world. MTV : What was your reaction to Disney changing the film’s original title, in an effort to lure in more young boys? Moore : I think I was initially a bit taken aback, only because people know the story of Rapunzel, so when you say you’re working on “Rapunzel,” it’s sort of a no-brainer, you don’t have to explain it to people. But as the title sort of sunk in, I understood the decision behind changing it. The movie is so great and so cute, and people are going to see the trailer and know what the story is about. I guess you sort of have to leave it up to the brains at the top. They know what they’re doing. MTV : What can you tell us about this particular story? Can you tease any romance? Moore : She sort of comes face to face with this stranger who precariously ends up in her tower, and he’s very handsome [and] he knows it. He’s quite the ladies’ man, if you will. Somehow, they get roped into going on this adventure together and start to see a different side of one another, and potentially a romance ensues. There’s [also] a few musical moments. MTV : What was that experience like, recording with legendary Disney composer Alan Menken? Moore : That was fun. I’m definitely the quintessential girl who grew up watching “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” and the like, so it was probably one of the coolest things I’ve done thus far, being in the studio with Alan Menken and a 65-piece orchestra. It was such a moment in time. I kept telling myself: “Just be in the moment. Remember this. You’re going to want to think about this for years to come.” It was really magical and sort of everything you’d want a Disney animated experience to be. As one of the players involved, I was like, “Oh my God!” … To watch it all come to life, because so much of your job — you’re looking at storyboards, you’re having things explained to you, but there’s nothing tangible to see or get, it has to form in your imagination, which is one of the slightly taxing parts, but also the most fun — to get to be a kid again and go into the depths of your imagination and play around. This, being there with the orchestra and hearing the score sort of come to life and what the feel of the movie was going to be at different parts was like, “Oh, OK, now I really get what we’re doing.” So that was definitely a moment for me. It was the first time I met Zach [Levi]. MTV : Does Zach actually sing in the film? Moore : He does, and he’s amazing! Oh my God, we had one rehearsal before we went into the studio, and I was so interested [in him], because they wanted to cast actors in the roles who could also sing, and I had no idea that he sang, and it turns out he’s like a big musical-theater nut and had that in his background. He has a beautiful voice, but he has the perfect voice for something like this. He’s such a sweet guy, and he’s so funny in the movie, but I think his voice will astonish people, like, “Wow, where did that come from?” From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars. Bow Wow Wants To Become An ‘Artist’s Artist’ With Greenlight 3

‘I’ve accomplished more than a lot of cats in hip-hop who get that recognition,’ Bow tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Bow Wow Photo: MTV News Monday’s Main Pick Street Star : Bow Wow Holding It Down For : Cash Money Mixtape : Greenlight 3 Real Spit : Bow Wow’s Greenlight 3 has a yellow light for now. Bow definitely plans to put it out, but he’s delaying it for a couple of weeks. He wanted to let his film “Lottery Ticket” breathe before he dropped his new project. “It’s important for me to do the Greenlight mixtape, because the fans want it. Where I got the title, the whole Greenlight title came from Jermaine [Dupri],” Bow explained. “He was gonna name his album Greenlight. I asked him: ‘What you gonna do with it?’ I took it and ran with it and created a brand. G1 set the tone. G2, I told you, it did a million downloads in a day. I never knew it was gonna be like that. I didn’t know if it’s me signing to Cash Money or because it was free. This is the third one, and it’s the last one. And it’s gonna complete the series. ” Greenlight 3 has 12 original records. It’s gonna sound like a brand-new album,” he added. “It’s easy to take a verse and put it on whatever’s hot. To make songs, that’s what a lot of artists or MCs have a hard time with. Making records. I did it this time for it to be original, because you see what’s going on with Chris [Brown] and the ‘Deuces’ record. That’s off the mixtape, what you think is off an album. I did that intentionally, because I could probably have three singles — which I do. I feel like I got three singles off the G3. G3 is to prepare people of what’s to come from the album.” Joints to Check For

ENDA is about men showering with women

Barney Frank: ENDA is about men showering with women Date: 8/27/2010 9:53:29 AM By Bryan Fischer “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27, emphasis mine). According to both Scripture and biology, there are just two genders, two and only two, male and female. Period. Pro-family advocates have from the beginning opposed the normalizing of transgenderism because it does gross violence to any rational view of human sexuality, and, even worse, will force women to share shower, bathroom and locker-room facilities with biological males. Nonsense, we’ve been told by the deviancy cabal. All hype, fear, and exaggeration. Nothing to fear here except homophobia, move along. It’s all just fear-mongering, nothing like that will ever happen. Your daughter will never run into a disrobed male in the locker room of your local public pool. This is an ongoing battle in our day, at the state level as well as the congressional level. This spring, Maine very nearly enacted a policy that would require ENDA-type regulations in every school in the state, including private Christian schools. It was narrowly turned back. A major goal of the Democrats in the current Congress is to get a transvestite-friendly ENDA bill passed this year. No worries, they say. Pro-family opponents are just trying to scare you with all this bathroom and locker room talk. And then along comes Rep. Barney Frank, the homosexual congressman from Massachusetts, to inadvertently save the day. Democrats tried to pass ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) in 1999, and were under extreme pressure to include transgenders under its umbrella. Transgenders are people who are so psychologically and mentally confused they think they are trapped in a body of the wrong sex. So we are talking here about biological males – males in every single cell of their bodies, with every strand of DNA male to the core, males according to “the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God” – who are convinced that they are women trapped in male bodies. Consequently, they want to act as women, dress as women, and use the same facilities women use, including bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms. The pro-family community has spoken with one voice. No, no, a thousand times no. We do not want our wives and daughters exposed to such perversion. We insist on a decent protection for the privacy of the females in our families, and do not believe that males have any moral, ethical or legal right to share shower facilities with them. In a long-buried piece from the homosexual newspaper, Bay Windows, dated June 10, 1999, Mr. Frank lets the proverbial cat out of the cathouse. In fending off transgendered activists, Frank told the paper it would be impossible to pass an ENDA bill which included special protections for such sexually abnormal individuals. Here’s what he had to say: “I’ve talked with transgender activists and what they want—and what we will be forced to defend—is for people with penis’ who identify as women to be able to shower with other women. There are no votes for that. And if that is the price for this bill, it is wrong.” (Emphasis mine) Read that again: ENDA, as currently fashioned, is about “people with penis’ who identify as women to be able to shower with other women.” Rep. Frank said since that’s what this bill is about, we’d have to defend that. They didn’t have the votes to do it in 1999. But they’re back, trying to break down the door to your daughter’s locker room in 2010. So if you want your daughter to share a shower at your school, or at the local YMCA, with “people with penis’,” then Barney Frank and his ruling class colleagues are the kind of congressmen you want. But if you want any kind of sane public policy on human sexuality, then they’re not. For my money, this is the ENDA the discussion about whether the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is good public policy. Let’s protect our wives and daughters and drive this misbegotten piece of legislation into oblivion. http://action.afa.net/Blogs/BlogPost.aspx?id=2147497842 added by: ReverandG

Cee Lo’s New Song Is Easy On The Ears, Heavy On The Language

Motown throwback ‘F— You’ is gaining Internet buzz despite its explicit lyrics. By James Dinh Cee-Lo Green Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Four years ago, Cee-Lo scored big with his Gnarls Barkley hit song “Crazy,” but now the singer is sending a different message, one that may be a little too hard to sing in public. With his new song “F— You,” the R&B singer is keeping blogs across the Internet buzzing. On the first single from his new solo album, The Lady Killer, Cee-Lo convincingly tells off his money-hungry ex-girlfriend and the man with the larger pockets who took her away. Despite being kicked to the curb, the soul singer holds his head high and turns the tale of a scorned man into a happy-go-lucky track with his charismatic voice. The song was produced by the Smeezingtons (the writing and production trio of Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine). “See you driving ’round town with the girl I love/ And I’m like, f— you!/ Oo, oo, ooo/ I guess the change in my pocket wasn’t enough/ I’m like, f— you!/ And f— her too!” the 36-year-old sings. Entertainment Weekly described the track as “beyond fantastic” with its “hilarious contrast to the really, really salty language and creative lyrics,” while Pitchfork marveled at the track saying, “It’s beyond happy. Cathartic. It could be the new ‘Sesame Street’ theme. It could play at a wedding, and your grandmother would hobble to it. It’s post-censorship.” Others, including Prefixmag.com , pondered how the track will be able to succeed with the restrictions imposed by its explicit chorus. “It’s easy to imagine the folks at Cee-Lo’s label tearing their hair out as they realize that this potential hit will hit some fairly insurmountable stumbling blocks when people are affronted by the title,” the magazine said. With all the blogosphere praise, the singer took to Twitter to thank fans for all their early support. “Oyea, a bit of history has been made with “f— you” I’m equally amazed 🙂 yall help put your people (me) on top where I belong! and I’ll rep till the death,” he tweeted on Sunday. Cee-Lo will reportedly release the song’s official video next week, but until then listeners will have to settle for the song’s lyric video, which was uploaded on the singer’s official YouTube page. “F— You” will be available for download October 4. Method Man Also Hit With Debris At Gathering Of The Juggalos

Following earlier attack on Tila Tequila, rapper was cut on the face by a beer can thrown by an audience member. By Gil Kaufman Method Man Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ WireImage The garbage wasn’t just flying during Tila Tequila’s set at last weekend’s Gathering of the Juggalos. According to photos posted on TMZ , Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man also left the stage bloodied during his set with longtime cohort Redman in front of a rowdy crowd of Insane Clown Posse fans. The photo shows Meth with a bloody gash on the left side of his face, which according to an eyewitness, was sustained on Sunday night when someone in the audience tossed what appeared to be a full beer can at the rapper’s noggin. TMZ referred to a video, apparently shot just moments after the incident, in which Redman cursed out the crowd and told his pal, “Your face is cut, go take care of that.” Ever the professional, Meth waved off the stage injury and shouted, “Start the music, we’re continuing the show. Let’s f— these motherf—ers up!” Meth appears to have taken his Gathering gash better than Tequila, who told E! Online that she wants to bankrupt the event’s organizers after she was reportedly injured when fans pelted her with bottles, rocks and human feces. “I’m hoping this will be the last Juggalos gathering that they will ever have,” she said on Monday, reiterating a threat to close down the annual festival that she first made on her Twitter page . Tequila claimed that her lawyers were planning to sue the festival’s promoters after she reportedly required stitches on her face and sustained bruises to her body. Tequila said she was warned by her fans online before the show that the Juggalos were planning to attack her. She also got a heads up from ICP member Violent J, who told TMZ that the duo alerted her to pre-show rumors that she was going to be targeted during her brief Friday night set. “We told her about the rumor and she didn’t care,” J said. “We paid her before the show and assured her that even if things got out of hand, she could keep the money if she had to leave the stage.” Though he said ICP would fight hard against any potential lawsuit, the rapper lamented that the crowd got violent with Tequila. “If you look at these people, or monsters, whatever they are, they looked very angry and violent,” Tequila said. Comedian Tom Green, who tried to stop the rain of garbage on Tequila by doing a dance onstage during her set, told CNN that a huge mob chased the former Playboy model and star of MTV’s “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila” to her trailer, where she tried to hide out as they rocked the vehicle and smashed its windows. When the tabloid fixture tried to flee in an SUV, the windows of that vehicle were also reportedly smashed. Related Artists Method Man
