Nicki Minaj Told Jay Sean She Was ‘Going In’ On ‘2012’

Young Money rapper is uniquely ‘fun and playful’ on the track, British crooner tells MTV News. By Akshay Bhansali Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images It will come as no surprise to fans of Jay Sean that his new single, “2012 (It Ain’t the End),” boasts bars by Young Money princess Nicki Minaj. After all, his U.S. debut single, “Down,” features Lil Wayne , which was followed by Lil Jon and Sean Paul jumping on “Do You Remember.” Still, the Hounslow hero (Jay Sean was born near the Wimbledon site in West London) was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call from Miss Minaj earlier this year. “It was actually a surprise for me,” Sean told MTV News last week. “Nicki Minaj heard [‘2012’], she called me and … she was like, ‘I love it! It’s sick. I’m going in on this!’ “I’m a fan of Nicki’s. I think she’s incredible,” he continued. “And I had wanted to work with her for a while. But when she picked this song out herself, I was like, ‘Go ahead. Bless it. Please.’ ” Nicki Minaj is one of the most successful hip-hop artists at the moment, all before her debut album is released. And Jay Sean is pleased not only because her feature in “2012” brings the gravity of her presence, but that she attacked the song with a swagger different from her usual form. “A testament to a great artist is the fact that they are able to interpret the song for what it is,” Sean said. “Now, Nicki is a rapper. This is a pop record. She took the message of having fun and enjoying yourself, living like it’s the end, living every minute like it’s the last, and she put that vibe and that swagger on the track … and that voice is fun and playful on it. It was great.” Minaj also appears in the video for “2012” , which was shot last month in Los Angeles. Jay Sean’s sophomore U.S. effort, Freeze Time, is tentatively set for a November 2 release. James Cameron Discusses Sending 3-D Cameras (And People) To Mars

‘I want to make films about this and get people excited about [space] exploration,’ the ‘Avatar’ director says. By Kara Warner James Cameron Photo: MTV News For Oscar-winning director James Cameron, whose box-office clout at this point seems unmatchable, making mega-blockbusters like “Avatar” and “Titanic” might not be enough. So next year, Cameron is taking his filmmaking expertise to the final frontier. In April, it was announced that Cameron had partnered with NASA to help build a 3-D camera mounted atop the Mars rover Curiosity for a mission planned for launch next year. When MTV News caught up with the filmmaker, we asked if, in addition to sending 3-D cameras to Mars, he’s thinking about how to send humans there. “Oh, yeah, I’ve been thinking about the issues of sending human beings to Mars for a long time,” he admitted during a press day for the re-release of “Avatar.” “I started 11 years ago working on a Mars project that led me to doing a lot of research, meeting a lot of people at NASA, getting involved with people, and then at a certain point, a couple years ago, they said, ‘Wait a minute, this guy knows a lot about Mars, he knows a lot about 3-D cameras, zoom lenses, motion photography, all the things we’re incorporating into this new camera system. Why don’t we bring him in?’ ” Cameron said one thing led to another, and suddenly, a partnership was born. “I’m actually on the team developing the new camera for the Mars Science Laboratory, which launches next year,” he said, adding that if all goes well, we could see 3-D photos of the red planet in the very near future. “Theoretically, we will have a motion-image stereoscopic camera on the surface of Mars in 2011, and it will be making the first 3-D movie on Mars — well, it’s not a movie, but we’ll be taking 3-D shots.” As for humans making the trip, Cameron added that it will require a couple of things — namely, a shift in our national interest. “The public has to want it — that’s number one — because it has to be paid for. I think commercial, new, lean enterprises like [PayPal co-founder] Elon Musk’s company SpaceX , which is going to be creating human transportation to the space station. They’re a good candidate to build the systems that could get us to Mars, for example,” he said. “But it still requires the national will, and right now, that national will, quite frankly, isn’t up to the task. People don’t care about it enough, which is why I want to make films about this and get people excited about exploration.” Cameron ended his thoughts with a question for the public: “Frankly, what would you rather spend your money on: pointless wars in the Middle East to support our oil addiction or going to another planet?” What do you think about Cameron’s involvement with NASA and space exploration? Let us know in the comments! Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

WaPo’s Frank Ahrens Suggests Krugman, Kudlow as Potential Romer Replacements

Paul Krugman and Larry Kudlow – not exactly two guys you would associate with one another. However, they are two media figures Washington Post columnist Frank Ahrens thinks should be candidates for the same job. In his Aug. 15 column , Ahrens wrote about some of the people that should replace outgoing chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers Christina Romer. He named several candidates including Pepsi’s Indra Nooyi, James Sinegal, co-founder and chief executive of Costco, and Ford chief executive Alan Mulally. But he also named New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and CNBC’s “Kudlow Report” host Larry Kudlow . In his case for Krugman, Ahrens wondered that since Krugman can talk the talk, can he walk the walk as well. “Outside the academic world, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is best known for his New York Times columns arguing that the $787 billion, debt-busting stimulus bill was not enough, so even moderate Democrats — not to mention conservatives — might lose their minds with this pick. But maybe it’s time for Krugman to put his money where his mouth is,” Ahrens wrote. “You think government needs to spend more to get us out of this funk? Okay, Paul. Here’s the key to the car.”  In the case of Larry Kudlow, Ahrens wrote the CNBC host would be a wise choice because he can communicate economic policies clearly. “You might laugh at this one, but CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan administration before going to Wall Street to make his millions and subsequently flame out like a booze-and-drug-fueled Icarus, a low period he has discussed openly,” Ahrens wrote. “But Americans believe in second chances, and Kudlow’s been one-day-at-a-timing it for more than a decade. There is no more articulate spokesman for supply-side economics and tax-cut job creation. Yet, not even his legendary selection of suits and ties will likely win him admirers in the Obama White House.” Ahrens also appeared on CNBC’s “Street Signs” with Erin Burnett on Aug. 16 to argue for his suggestions, including making the case for Kudlow. Albeit unlikely, Ahrens says idea isn’t as crazy as one might think. “Larry Kudlow, great American,” Ahrens said. “I know you’re going to laugh or some of the viewers may laugh. But, look, the guy has been in this position before in previous administrations. He’s been on Wall Street. He knows about how to talk to folks in government. He knows about how the private markets work. And there’s no really more eloquent spokesman for supply-side job creation through tax cuts. Listen, you can know all you want about policy, but if you can’t explain yourself to the President, then that’s a real key thing, a real key element of this job. To get the President’s ear, you have to be able to explain yourself. It’s sort of fun, but it’s not as crazy as you might think.”

Foxy Brown Says Firm Reunion Is Up To Nas And Cormega

‘I’m the link that can bring each one of them together,’ Foxy tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Foxy Brown Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials: Foxy Brown and the Firm The Firm are one of one. We haven’t seen a collective quite like them. Back in the ’90s, Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and even Nature were able to drop endless classic material on mixtapes, be a part of the historic Puff Daddy-headlined No Way Out Tour and drop one platinum group album on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath imprint. For the past few years we’ve seen live hints at a reunion of the Firm. The core four, Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ and Cormega have performed together at shows in various permutations, but never all four at one time. Foxy Brown says everyone has talked about a real reunion, but differences between the Queens half of the group have to be ironed out first. “We all sat down and conversed,” she told MTV News recently. “We all know if it’s not the main four, the only four, it can’t be. Nas, myself, AZ and Cormega, that is the Firm. There is no other artist that can substitute for Nas, AZ, Cormega and myself. If all four of us can’t do it, it can’t be done.” Brown says she’s still on great terms with the others. “AZ and myself are inseparable throughout the years. He can walk in my house and go inside the refrigerator, get whatever he wants,” she said. “Cormega is like my brother. You know Nas, Nas has gone his way. He got married and has gone through his own stuff. I went to prison, lost my hearing. We all just had our lives take different turns. We realized that everywhere we go, people are like, ‘The Firm, the Firm.’ A was like, ‘We gotta do this.’ That’s when the rumors started.” During a recent concert in New York, Brown brought out AZ and Cormega. She says that before they all can fully reunite, Nas and Mega have to work things out. “He and Cormega — everybody knows the legendary beef between them,” she assessed. “So, [the challenge is] getting them in the same room together. Nas had a concert at Lincoln Center two Christmases ago. AZ wasn’t there, but me and Cormega came out. So they can get in the same room together. And they can kind of alleviate the bullsh– and say, ‘Let’s get this money now.’ We’re older, let’s get this money. “We started as babies,” she added. “We were babies, like ’96, ’97, selling millions of records together. We have history together. I’m the one that’s close to each one of them. I’m the link that can bring each one of them together. So it’s Nas getting in the same room with Mega. And then we’re good. His personal feelings with Mega, they have to work that out. Once they do that … They have a history that AZ and I can’t relate to. There’s something they have to work out. I know I can get them together.” Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Foxy Brown, Tony Yayo, Idris Elba Related Artists Foxy Brown Nas

Toronto Gets Bixi Bike System, Sponsored by Dutch Bank ING

Like American cities, Toronto is taxed-starved to the point that a couple of years ago it couldn’t find $75K to save its community yellow bike system. But its gotta be, as a former mayor used to say, “World Class”, so if Paris and London and Montreal have bike share systems, so does Toronto. It is bringing Montreal’s Bixi system to town, or a small portion thereof. Since Toronto can’t even pay for civic amenities like garbage cans and bus shelters, let alone bike share systems, it will be sponsored, in this case by the… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Danielle Staub Accused of Snitching, Coke Whoring, Death Threatening by Former Lover/Drug Dealer

Throughout this season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey , Danielle Staub has been referred to as a “coke whore” by her cast mates. But spurned ex-convict Daniel Aguilar went one step further this week, telling Radar Online the troubled reality star is a “snitchin’ coke whore.” And, according to sworn testimony by Aguilar, he should know. Last Thursday, Aguilar was deposed under oath as part of Kevin Maher’s defamation lawsuit against Staub. A former drug dealer who was arrested in a kidnapping and drug distribution scheme with Staub three decades ago, Aguilar went to jail because Staub turned on him. He said he met Staub when she worked as a prostitute and used the names Beverly Merrill and Angela Minelli. The pair started dating and working together, with Staub approaching Aguilar at one point and asking for four kilograms of cocaine to sell to her neighbor. Aguilar provided the drugs. But the neighbor never paid for the cocaine, and Aguilar believes he was ripped off by Staub and this man. In order to cover her tracks, though, Staub allegedly began beating the neighbor over the head with a 9mm Beretta, threatening the man’s life. She told the man’s father that his son would die unless at least $25,000 was paid. Both Staub and Aguilar were arrested for the incident and charged with extortion and intent to distribute cocaine. Via a plea bargain, Staub avoided jail time and flipped on Aguilar, sending him to prison for years. Under oath, Aguilar admitted “I wanted to kill her because of what she did, but I realize that if she’s dead I’m not going to get paid,” referring to the $100,000 he’s still owed for the original cocaine shipment. Aguilar even says he contacted Staub last month to demand the money, but she insists she owes him nothing. It’s a complicated, layered story – and a lot of it rests on the word of a convicted drug dealer. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that Danielle Staub is rewarded for her incredibly shady, illegal behavior throughout the years with a six-figure salary and a starring reality show role.
