Wyclef Jean’s History With Haiti: From Birth To Presidential Bid

Throughout his career, former Fugees leader has been an outspoken advocate for his homeland. By Gil Kaufman Wyclef Jean Photo: Steve Mack/ Getty Images Wyclef Jean officially announced his bid for the presidency of his native Haiti on Thursday’s (August 5) “Larry King Live.” Word began to surface last month that he was considering a run for the position . The job comes with a five-year term that would likely keep him out of the music game until 2015. If news of Jean’s political ambitions caught anyone by surprise, they clearly haven’t been paying attention to the former Fugees leader’s non-musical efforts for the past 15 years. While Wyclef — who was born outside the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and raised in Brooklyn, New York — was one of the first celebrities to call for assistance for his Caribbean homeland in the wake of January’s devastating earthquake, the 37-year-old has been at the forefront of Haitian relief for much of his career. Back in 1997, when the Fugees — whose Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill also are of Haitian descent — were still riding high, the trio headlined a benefit concert in Port-au-Prince. The six-hour homecoming show drew more than 70,000 fans as it raised funds for Haitian refugees and artists. (MTV News followed the band to the island for the show, which you can relive here and here .) Although there were accounting problems with the money raised from the benefit concert, they were mostly ironed out, and ‘Clef was honored for his work helping underprivileged kids through the Wyclef Jean Foundation two years later. In the following years, Jean continued to raise funds for his foundation and frequently reminded his audience about the troubles affecting his homeland, from AIDS and poverty to political corruption. In 2004, Jean started the Yele Haiti foundation, which distributed more than 3,600 scholarships to Haitian children in its first year and, at one point, announced plans to build a Wyclef Jean School of the Arts and a cultural center on the impoverished island. That same year, as Haiti suffered from a violent uprising against the government, ‘Clef voiced support for Haitian rebels and called for the resignation of embattled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. ‘Clef also addressed the country’s AIDS problem and promised, through education and prevention, to help the nation’s children avoid contracting the HIV virus. The singer was named a roving ambassador in January 2007, charged with improving the image of the island, which is perennially tagged as the poorest in the western hemisphere. He and Akon closed out the year in Haiti with a fundraising concert dubbed the Yele Festival . After Hurricane Ike hit Haiti in 2008, Yele delivered food and assistance to those impacted by the storm, and in October 2008, ‘Clef performed with Carlos Santana in San Francisco to raise funds for the foundation. It was in the early hours after January’s earthquake that Jean really became Haiti’s favorite son, when he issued urgent pleas for help though his Twitter account and in multiple TV and radio interviews. Within days, Yele had raised more than $2 million for Haitian relief via text message, as ‘Clef continued to keep the topic at the forefront of the news with interviews about the devastation and his offer to co-anchor MTV Networks’ “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon alongside George Clooney. Bringing some of his Creole background to his performance with “Yele,” Jean also gave a moving performance of the reggae classic “Rivers of Babylon,” before returning to the island the next morning to help with recovery efforts. He also pitched in on the 25th-anniversary remake of “We Are the World,” which benefited Haiti relief as well, and helped anchor BET’s “SOS Saving Ourselves: Help for Haiti,” alongside Mary J. Blige and Drake. What do you think about Wyclef’s decision to run for president of Haiti? Share your thoughts in the comments. Will Ali Fedotowsky Wed Roberto Martinez on TV?

They just got engaged on The Bachelorette finale , bringing in big ratings for ABC. So … will Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez tie the knot on TV next? On Live with Regis and Kelly today, they say they haven’t ruled it out. “We’ve talked about it a little bit,” Ali said of a TV special. “Definitely a possibility.” “[But] not because we want to be on TV again.” So for the money then. Hey, it’s honest! Ali said a TV wedding could “be practical for our marriage, our life, our relationship. Weddings are expensive and [Roberto] has a huge family. When I met his mom, she said 700 people will be at it!” Kelly Ripa concurred: “Let ABC pay for it!” Should Alberto marry on a Bachelorette special? “We figure we are in love,” Ali Fedotowsky said, further explaining her reasoning. “We can invest that [wedding fund] money and invest our whole lives.” Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney were the most recent (and only the second ever) couple from the franchise to get hitched on TV, marrying in March. As for Bachelorette runner-up Chris Lambton , who she sent packing before their final date,” Ali said, “I’m sort of glad I went through the motions, but at the end with Chris, I had to let him go … I just had to be with Roberto … I think he’ll be okay.” Roberto Martinez isn’t sure: “I don’t think so. He took it really bad.” TV wedding or not, will Ali and Roberto last?

Kelly Brook Keeps Up The Good Work

I knew that yesterday’s pictures of hottie Kelly Brook flashing us her tight little ass in spandex were going to be tough to beat, but I thought that these shots of her in her skin tight little dress walking around were almost as good. Obviously you can’t beat an ass in spandex , at least not without the money up front, but these are just as sexy in a different kind of way. They’re classier, like you could bring this one to church on Sunday or to a really high class strip club. more pictures of Kelly Brook here

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Premieres Thursday On MTV

The 90-second clip will air at 11 p.m., after ‘Jersey Shore.’ By Shaheem Reid Kanye West Photo: MTV News It’s not a video, it’s a work of art. But MTV will be the gallery when Kanye West’s much-anticipated clip for “Power” debuts Thursday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT right after “Jersey Shore.” The Louis Vuitton Don and director Marco Brambilla have been adamant in avoiding the “music video” label since their collaboration was announced. “The ‘Portrait of Power’ premieres this Thursday on MTV right after Jersey Shore…it’s not a video… it’s a painting!” West tweeted Wednesday morning (August 4). Unlike the standard music video, West’s “Power” runs only 90 seconds. Speaking to The New York Times last week, Brambilla described the look of the video as “kind of apocalyptic.” “It had this very dark, personal conflict within it,” Brambilla said. “Because of his own concept of celebrity and his own notoriety, he’s keenly self-aware of all these things. And it all came out in the music.” Since “Power” leaked to the Net in May, the record has been lauded by fans as well as journalists . The song’s release was just part of West’s return from his brief musical hiatus. He produced two tracks (“Find Your Love” and “Show Me a Good Time”) for Drake’s Thank Me Later, and he appears on and produced “Live Fast, Die Young” on Rick Ross’ Teflon Don. Kanye has also produced and appears on albums by his G.O.O.D. Music roster of talent, Consequence, Big Sean and Kid Cudi, all due out on September 14. Thursday is a big night for video premieres, with Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” clip also debuting on MTV that night, at 9 p.m. before “Jersey Shore.” Are you excited for Kanye’s new video? Talk about it in the comments. Related Videos Kanye West Flashbacks Related Artists Kanye West

Lil Wayne Debuts New Single, ‘Right Above It,’ Featuring Drake

First track from I’m Not a Human Being EP aired on New York radio on Tuesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: C. Flanigan/ Getty Images Lil Wayne dominated New York’s hip-hop radio stations on Tuesday night, when the Cash Money Records superstar conducted an interview on Hot 97, and almost simultaneously, his new single, “Right Above It,” featuring Drake, premiered on Power 105. The song is the first effort from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, slated for release on September 27 (Lil Wayne’s birthday). During his Hot 97 interview with Funkmaster Flex, Wayne said he recorded the music for his upcoming EP before turning himself in to serve a yearlong prison sentence. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said over the phone. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” “Meet me on the fresh train,” Wayne raps over the synth-laden production. “Yes, I’m in the building, you just on the list of guest names/ And all of my riders don’t give a f—, X-games/ Guns turn you boys into … sex change.” Wayne later chants on the chorus: “Now tell me how you love it/ And know you at the top and only heaven’s right above it.” Earlier this year, Drake told MTV2’s “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy that he and Lil Wayne are planning on recording a joint project once Wayne finishes his sentence. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake explained. “There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s “Right Above It,” featuring Drake? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @MTVRapFix . Related Artists Lil Wayne

Nicki Minaj In ‘Heaven’ Over VMA Nomination

‘I didn’t even think I’d get invited!’ Young Money MC tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News It was just a few years ago when Young Money honey Nicki Minaj would gather ’round the TV at home with her family and settle in to watch the MTV Video Music Awards . But with her first nomination locked down in the hotly contested Best New Artist category at the 2010 VMAs , Minaj said on Tuesday (August 3) that she can hardly believe she’s going to the big game this year. “I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven,” Minaj said from her Los Angeles home about her debut VMA nom. “I definitely thought I’d get one someday, but not before I put the album out. I never thought I’d get a nomination [this year]. … I didn’t even think I’d get invited!” Not only does Minaj have her golden ticket, she’s going head-to-head with fellow newbies Ke$ha , Jason Der

‘Inception’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

MTV News has tracked every hidden layer of this film since word of it first dropped. By Eric Ditzian Leonardo Dicaprio in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. “Inception” is defined as a beginning — the act of commencement — but in Hollywood these days, “Inception” might just be shorthand for what happens when you make two immensely profitable movies and a studio backs up a truckload of cash onto your front lawn and says, “Thanks, man! Now go make the movie you’ve always dreamed of making.” Because that’s essentially what went down between Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan, who helmed “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” which grossed a combined $1.4 billion worldwide and resurrected one of the comic world’s most beloved film franchises. Nolan took his pile of cash — a rumored production budget of $200 million — and put together a film about a band of dream thieves, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, that can infiltrate another person’s sleep-time reveries and swipe coveted secrets. Their task in “Inception” is to implant an idea rather than steal one — a task so monumental they’re forced to construct dreams within dreams within dreams. What follows is nearly three hours of hallucinatory imagery, killer performances and story lines that unfold like origami to reveal hidden layers you never even thought existed. MTV News, however, has been tracking every hidden layer of this production since word of the movie first dropped. Before you hit the theater this weekend, check out our “Inception” cheat sheet for everything you need to know about what is thus far 2010’s coolest flick. Gotham Will Have to Wait In February 2009, a few weeks before Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his turn as the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” word leaked that Nolan would not immediately return to the world of the Caped Crusader for “Batman 3.” Rather, he’d be embarking on “Inception,” which was described at the time as a “contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” Aside from that rather vague description, precious few plot details about the new movie would arise for months. Instead, we stood back as the cast came together. DiCaprio signed up in March , and in April, “Dark Knight” vet Michael Caine told us he’d be joining up as well. Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe and Tom Hardy eventually rounded out the cast. “I can’t wait to talk to you about it, but I’ve been very specifically asked not to talk about it,” Gordon-Levitt told us that June. “I want to respect [Nolan’s wishes], because I love his movies, and I’m so honored and grateful to be working with him.” “Inception” Commencement By the middle of summer, key details about plot points had begun to spring up on the Web, but we still didn’t really know what the heck this movie was about. And after the teaser trailer popped up online, well, we didn’t know a whole lot more — except that it looked freaking amazing. The cast continued to reveal almost nothing about the film during interviews. “It’s conceptual. It doesn’t fit into any genre,” Murphy told us . “There are elements of different types of things in it, but it is all from Chris’ imagination. I’ve never read anything close to it before.” Nolan’s “Inception” was shrouded in secrecy , but as 2010 rolled around, he had to begin telling the world just a little bit more about the movie. “I think it’s really a balance between creating intrigue about the movie, getting people excited to see something original, something different that they don’t know what they’re going to get,” the director explained to us in March. “We have to start giving people a little bit of information, a little bit about what ‘Inception’ is.” Then in April, he let loose in a spoiler-filled interview with the Los Angeles Times, shortly before a full trailer appeared on the Web . Welcome to Our Shared Dream As the film’s July 16 release date approached, Nolan, DiCaprio and the rest of the “Inception” crew began to make the press rounds. Murphy and Watanabe took us inside one of the film’s craziest scenes, Nolan explained how the movie builds on his “Dark Knight” experiences and DiCaprio highlighted the epically layered story line. “It’s a very rare occurrence where you can do a movie that exists on four different planes simultaneously,” DiCaprio said of the film’s various dreamscapes . “That was the immediate intrigue: delving into the world of the subconscious with Chris Nolan.” For his part, Nolan had one specific goal in mind when he decided to take a detour from Gotham City and head straight into “Inception.” “I think, for me, my whole career in making films, really every time I set out to make a film, I want to try and give somebody in the audience the experience I had watching [‘Star Wars’], where it really felt like anything was possible in that world,” he said. “That’s a really extraordinary experience to have as a moviegoer. I think that’s the highest aspiration of the Hollywood blockbuster.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Fabolous Re-Releasing The Funeral Service 2 Mixtape As An EP

‘It started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Def Jam Midseason Salute: Fabolous’ The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2 We have to give credit where it’s due. Our segment on Fab’s mixtape has been one of the most applauded productions we’ve put together this year. Shot on location at Benta’s Funeral Home (shout to b-day girl Whitney!), Loso previewed what would be a front-runner for Mixtape of the Year. The Brooklyn native’s street CD was so hot, Def Jam stepped in and told him it was time to make some money off it. Fab is pulling a Drake and re-releasing the tape as an EP, much like Drizzy did with So Far Gone in ’09. “It’s really incredible how people will connect with the work,” Fab said. “I think we put a lot of work into it, with the whole funeral theme. We didn’t just say it and you had to daydream it. We went into the funeral homes. We picked caskets out for the competition. Def Jam, this summer, is gonna put the mixtape out as an EP. So I did about four new songs, put ’em with some of the original joints from the mixtape. We got more viral videos coming. We just gonna keep it going and let it end as the classic it is. A lot of people saying it’s a classic, one of the, if not the best mixtape of 2010. It’s crazy to me, because it started out as something I wanted to give free to the fans and people who accept my work. Def Jam even came in and said, ‘Whoa, we gotta get a piece.’ It’s a good thing, man. ” ‘Body Ya’ definitely did its thing,” he added about one of the standout cuts from the mixtape. “It got added to Hot 97 and Power 105.1. ‘Body Ya’ grew its own legs. The mixtape itself grew its own legs. People are still asking about it. In this fast-paced music industry, music and mixtapes don’t have that much longevity. You might listen to it for a month, somebody else drop they joint and you listening to it the next month. But No Competition 2, people are still listening to it , still on Twitter talking about it. It’s crazy.” Loso is keeping his production to new guys on the EP. “I worked with Sonaro, a producer who just signed to Street Family. He did ‘Body Ya.’ I worked with the guy who did [Rick Ross’] ‘Blowin’ Money Fast,’ Lex Luger. He did a song for me called ‘Lights Out.’ The one with Sonaro is called ‘Body Count.’ I did one more with Ryan Leslie called ‘You Be Killin’ Them.’ It’s a little bit more for the females but keeping with the theme. I think when people hear these three joints, they gonna be like, ‘He’s still giving us great music, and it’s just a mixtape, just an EP.’ And from here, I’m working on the album.” Fab’s album is Loso’s Way 2. Stacy Keibler’s Awesome Little Shorty Shorts

I’ve spent so much time this summer staring at boobies that I’ve forgotten to highlight some of the world’s greatest legs, until now. Here’s Stacy Keibler showing off her money makers in a sweet little pair of short shorts while heading to some club or something like that the other night. She’s doing her best to show me that she’s got some cleavage and that she’s more than just a sexy pair of long legs, but I’m not really buying it, to me she’ll always be just legs and a head. So hot.

Paris Hilton Obnoxious Posing of the Day

I liked the few months Paris Hilton disappeared. It allowed me to get on with my life and pretend that she ever really polluted my life, but for some reason she’s trying to make a comeback, as what, I’m not quite sure, cuz as far as I am concerned she peaked with her porn career and the rest of her stupid publicity stunt life was just a product of promoting that, and it went on too fucking long….but here she is doing her obnoxious pose like she’s a model, only she’s not actually modeling anything but herself, like she’s some kind of commodity that people give a fuck about and last time I checked that wasn’t anything anyone wanted to buy, if anything it was something they wish they never fucked as they picked the scabs off their genitals… Pics via Fame
