CNBC’s Cramer and Burnett: Could BP and Obama Have Handled Spill Better?

Reports are surfacing that BP is finally considering a suspension of its shareholder’s dividend, but what could have been done differently to avert the public relations nightmare BP is facing? Two CNBC hosts had some ideas about that, and about what could have happened if BP chose not to play ball. Jim Cramer and Erin Burnett shared their thoughts on the “Stop Trading” segment of “Street Signs” June 11 . According to the “Mad Money” host, Obama could have set a foul precedent for multi-national businesses if BP (NYSE: BP ) didn’t agree to make some concessions on how it is handling its day-to-day operations in the wake of this ecological crisis.  “I think that this is a, a stock that represents great value but you’re dealing with the government,” Cramer said. “I saw that Nancy Pelosi, she’s the second most powerful person in our country, saying that they shouldn’t be paying a dividend. I mean, this is one of those situations where I know, the president’s approval ratings are down and what you got to do is you got to go after BP if you’re the president. I’m not saying I would do it but I’m saying if I were the president of the United States, BP is public enemy number one and you’re not even going to listen to what the British say. You just gotta say, ‘Guys, here’s the deal, we’re not, we’re not going to have any dividends here. And just you know, take it or leave it, partner, because this is a company that needs U.S. ball play.” And as for other cards the Obama administration could play? There were several since it’s politically ripe for the legislative and executive branches to act in an extraordinary manner. “Hey listen, the president could take away Prudhoe Bay,” Cramer continued. “There’s a Fifth Amendment against the taking of property in this country, as opposed to like say the old Soviet Union. But you know what, I got to tell you, when you got an angry president and angry Congress, nobody’s safe. And Mark Twain said that a few years ago.” And Burnett wondered if both parties involved, the federal government and BP, might have come out way ahead had this matter been handled behind the scenes. “You know, yeah, I just wonder Jim, you know if you think about it whether the administration in hindsight could have done it differently,” Burnett said. “You know, instead of having the first thing you do – go out and say they should cut the dividend publicly, making them sort of look evil, maybe privately you have that conversation. And maybe they did and BP was just so resistant, that’s why they went public. So maybe I’m jumping to a conclusion, but if they didn’t, it would seem maybe having a little bit more – let’s just say [better] relationship between the government and BP. At least while we get through this. It might have been a better thing.” But one thing Cramer pointed out that not a lot of other outlets have seemed to pick up on – the amount of oil gushing from this spill in such a short amount of time indicates this was an incredibly huge find from a purely oil exploration perspective. “What you have on right now, you see the flow, and I thought it was 1,500,” Cramer said. “I remember when I was on the ‘Today’ show and they were talking about it being 1,500 barrels, 2,000 barrels. Now look, here’s what my oil friends say. My oil friends are very tied in. This is the greatest well in the world right now. It is literally pumping out more oil than anyone has ever seen. It has not let up one bit. My friends who are oil men are saying the same thing over and over – “This is the greatest discovery in this planet and what’s really going on is that they can’t get the pressure down. They’re just stalling hoping the pressure will come down and it doesn’t stop. It’s the greatest find of all time.”

Shannon Price is a Money-Grubbing Leech – Just Ask Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman’s ex-wife Shannon Price was motivated by money alone. The former child star himself said as much to the girl’s face – and on video. In 2008, around the time Gary and Shannon were divorcing, the two were filming a TV show pilot. It’s unclear what show, but it wasn’t picked up. Clips have been unearthed, however, and show Gary unloading on Shannon Price in front of a life coach. “All you care about is the money,” he says. He goes on to bitterly complain he’s been forced to take jobs he hated to support her … going to places he loathed, including Madison, Wisconsin. Why the hatred of that city, we have no idea. But the coach tells Gary he needs a job, STAT, and even offered to hook him up at a car dealership. Gary Coleman had Shannon Price pegged. Fast forward to 2010. Coleman died in May, and Price’s behavior has been nothing short of deplorable as she makes move after move to cash in. As if hawking the Gary Coleman death photo weren’t bad enough, Price filed legal documents angling for control of whatever assets he has left. Shannon wants to be named special administrator of Gary’s estate on grounds she was his common-law wife, having lived with him for five years. Additionally, she has submitted to the court a handwritten document purportedly from Gary making her the sole beneficiary of his entire estate. In what she claims is a handwritten addendum written by Gary Coleman in 2007, Shannon says he named her “sole heir of any and all monies.” That and all “earnings, model trains, vehicles, cars, toys, electronics, homes, other inheritances if any, all things physical and/or intellectual.” The couple then got divorced in 2008, but no matter. Oddly, the handwritten document reads: “This I have done because of my personal selfishness and weakness and I Love her with all my heart.” The handwritten addendum modifies a 2006 will stating “I revoke all previous wills. I specifically disinherit my biological parents and siblings.”

Analyst: BP Oil Spill Clean-Up Will Have $60-Billion Price Tag; Dividend Elimination Hurts Retirees

We all know the BP oil spill is a huge mess. It’s going to be costly to clean up – but just how much? And while some outspoken critics are calling for BP to eliminate its dividend, they probably aren’t realizing the residual effects. On the June 10 broadcast of Fox Business Network’s “Bulls & Bears,” Fadel Gheit, a senior analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., offered a huge estimate. But, he explained what is done is done and that going after BP with harsh penalties, as in elimination of the BP stock dividend, now will hurt a lot of American retirees. “Couple of things – I mean, it is water under the bridge, it is over and you will have to live with it,” Gheit said. “BP will have to live with it. We have to remember one thing — BP bought 10 years ago, Amoco, Arco, a very large American corporation with a lot of people working for BP today. And the retirees are pensioners from the Amoco and Arco days. So by cutting the dividend we’re penalizing completely innocent people that worked very hard for many years. And now, the dividend is the way they support themselves. So, I don’t understand.” And he suggested a compromise – not the total elimination of the BP’s stock’s dividend but that something should come down in the middle.  “Yes, I understand clearly that we have to set the money aside to clean up and all those things but we have to reach a compromise and not throw [out] the baby with the bath water,” Gheit continued. “So there has to be some balance between my view here, BP should cut dividend by at least 50 percent. And I think they will have the financial feasibility to clean up the mess they created.” But over time, the spill would be cleaned up he explained. “Eventually it will be cleaned up,” Gheit said. “It will cost more” How much more? A lot more, he said. “I estimate it will cost about $60 billion,” Gheit said. This figure was a bit of a shock to “Bulls & Bears” co-host David Asman: “Wow! $60 billion.” And although BP (NYSE: BP ) has a market cap of roughly $100 billion, Gheit explained it won’t come in one lump sum but over 10 years. “But it’s not going to be in a day or a week or a year,” Gheit said. “Might take about 10 years. So, that the present value of the $60 billion is pretty manageable.”

REVIEW: Jackie Chan, Karate Kid Offer Hit-Or-Miss Summer Treat

For those weaned on the original, watching The Karate Kid ‘s franchise reboot is a little like running into your old crush at a middle-school reunion: Warmly familiar and yet altered enough to warrant a second look, the raw material’s all there, it’s just been moved around a bit. OK, more than a bit: The Sex and the City ladies follow the money to Abu Dhabi; the Karate kid and his widowed mom follow the jobs — to China. This necessitates one of the film’s most conspicuous and yet least noted swap-outs: In China one practices kung fu, but karate is Japanese, as was the original film’s instructor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). And yet the title remains, asserting allegiance to brand over narrative logic. It’s all the same crap anyway, right?

Diddy Regrets Not Sending Notorious B.I.G. To London The Day He Died

Bad Boy mogul says letting Biggie stay in L.A. is ‘the only regret that does haunt me.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Notorious B.I.G. and Diddy in 1995 Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images As one of the most money-earning, game-changing, party-starting moguls in entertainment, Diddy has had a lot to celebrate throughout his career. However, the star has also spent a lot of his storied career lamenting the loss of his slain friend and Bad Boy artist, Notorious B.I.G. Diddy recently revealed that one his biggest regrets is not insisting that the late star handle some business overseas; a move that could have saved Biggie’s life. “Probably the only regret that does haunt me was the night that Biggie got killed. … He was supposed to go to London for a promo tour, and he had talked me into letting him stay in L.A.,” the entertainer revealed in a press conference video posted online by US Rap News . “That’s, like, a regret that I have, just not forcing him to get on the plane.” Diddy expressed similar regrets about the day Biggie died in a video blog released last year before the release of the biopic “Notorious.” Biggie was murdered on March 9, 1997, in Los Angeles after attending an after-party for The Soul Train Awards. The case remains unsolved. The situation is eerily similar to the challenge faced by the protagonist in Diddy’s latest movie, Get Him to the Greek. The flick revolves around an ambitious record label rep (played by Jonah Hill) tasked with delivering a rowdy rock star (portrayed by Russell Brand) from London to Los Angeles for a comeback concert. Brand’s character spends most of the movie trying to finagle his way out of his professional commitments. Diddy plays an over-amped music exec whose insane demands and bizarre behavior make things even more difficult for Hill’s character. Diddy-Dirty Money held a press conference in Paris to promote the group’s upcoming album Last Train to Paris. The project includes the steely single “Angels,” which features a verse from B.I.G. Lil Wayne’s Verse On Drake’s – Light Up – From Jail? Watch Now!

Weezy and Mack Maine come up with the idea during a phone call, in new footage from DJ Scoob Doo. By Jayson Rodriguez Scoob Doo, Baby and Mack Maine Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne unleashed a lyrical tirade on Drake’s “Light Up,” with the incarcerated rapper contributing a remix verse to the Jay-Z-featured track from behind bars. But how exactly did the collaboration come about? According to footage provided to MTV News by DJ Scoob Doo, Young Money cohort Mack Maine challenged his boss to drop some rhymes to the Tone Mason and Noah “40” Shebib banger. The scene will be featured on Scoob Doo’s forthcoming DVD project featuring Lil Wayne, “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3.” “You was supposed to have that third [verse],” Mack tells Wayne after the rapper called him. “Write something to that.” Wayne and Mack were talking about Jay-Z’s opening lines to the second verse, which Weezy admired. “Yeah, man, ain’t nobody talking about what your boy talking about,” he said of Jay. “That n—a is stupid [with his rhymes]. I said, ‘Oooh, look at that.’ ” Mack and Wayne go back and forth, bantering about what the Cash Money Records superstar would sound like on the song. Then, Wayne finally responds. “Come up with a [verse]? Don’t play with me, man,” Weezy tells Mack over the phone. “Just drop that beat to a breakdown to where you can really hear what I’m saying. I’ll write 100 bars to that. Don’t play with me. Let me know when it’s set up, and I’ll do it. “It’s over,” he adds. “I got it already.” The two then coordinate a time for Wayne to call an engineer to help clean up the rapper’s vocals, which were slightly distorted, since he had to rap over the phone. The result was classic Wayne, chock-full of punch lines and illuminating lyrics. “I’m feeling like Elvis, ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ” Wayne raps via telephone. “I’m not Tupac, I’m the new ‘Pac/ Behind bars, but the bars don’t stop/ Recording over the phone, I hope the call don’t drop/ Drizzy got the ball, I know the ball won’t drop/ And I pray none of my kids ever wanna be Pop.” As of press time, it’s unknown if the “Light Up” remix will be included on the official Thank Me Later release or possibly a later deluxe version. 50 Cent, Floyd Mayweather Talk Eminem, Weight Loss

‘I was pissy,’ rapper says, describing being on a liquid diet to lose weight for role in ‘Things Fall Apart.’ By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Tim Kash 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Photo: MTV News During the run of his Invitation Tour, 50 Cent has been bringing out guests from E-40 to Carmelo Anthony. One guy who almost became a surprise for the fans was his good friend Eminem. Slim Shady, however, had to spend time with his family. “He wanted to come to my performance in Detroit. He was on baby watch,” 50 said last weekend in Los Angeles, when he was backstage at the House of Blues with another one of his onstage guests, boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather. “He was like, ‘Yo, I wanna come out there, but I gotta stay. Hailie and them looking at me now.’ He had to get off the phone, they was like, ‘We have to go.’ We talked for a little bit — he was trying to figure when he could expect [my] next record. He was like, ‘Do like I make my records, like Dre makes his records. [Put it out] when you feel happy with it 100 percent.’ Like Floyd said, having the financial security we have, we don’t have to just jump out there at any point.” “You could take your time,” Mayweather added. “You could take your time and make the record special.” 50’s Black Magic LP is still a ways off, but the rap giant has been filming a slew of movies in the past year, including the drama “Things Fall Apart.” He plays a football star stricken with cancer. 50 lost 54 pounds in less than three months for the role. “I’m glad you got your weight back,” Mayweather said to Fif. “I was getting worried. Everybody was telling me [about the picture posted on his website]. I’m not an Internet freak.” “I went from 214 to 160,” The G-Unit General said. “I was on a liquid diet for nine weeks. “I was in Baku, [Azerbaijan,] and I ran from the airport to the hotel,” he added, referring to one instance in his training. “I was doing a lot of treadmill running, but it’s mental. When you get on the street, you could run. On the treadmill, you start thinking about the time. If you got the same music playing it gets difficult after a while. You gotta have something to distract you.” “When you running on the street, you in control. When you’re on a treadmill, you’re not in control,” Money May added. “I didn’t see this [picture] yet, I gotta go check it out.” Fif says not having anything to eat made him angry. “I was real hungry,” he explained. “I was pissy. Lil Wayne Records Verse For Drake’s ‘Light Up’ From Prison

‘Recording over the phone, I hope the call don’t drop,’ Wayne raps in remix. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Lil Wayne has blogged from the bing and hosted a mixtape from prison , and now the Cash Money Records superstar has kicked a rhyme from behind bars. Weezy recorded a verse for Drake’s “Light Up” featuring Jay-Z ; the original track is set to appear on the Toronto MC’s forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, slated for a June 15 release. Drizzy premiered the number Tuesday night during a Ustream session with Jas Prince, the son of legendary Rap-A-Lot Record founder J. Prince. “I’m feeling like Elvis, ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ” Wayne raps via telephone. “I’m not 2Pac, I’m the new ‘Pac/ Behind bars, but the bars don’t stop/ Recording over the phone, I hope the call don’t drop/ Drizzy got the ball, I know the ball won’t drop/ And I pray none of my kids ever wanna be Pop.” Drake first hinted at the “Light Up” remix during his listening session in New York last week. The Young Money recording artist visited his mentor prior to the session and later told MTV 2 “Sucker Free” host DJ Envy that he and Wayne would release a joint project . The album version features only Drake and Jay-Z as the two rappers trade rhymes about their experience in the rap game. Drake told MTV News in March that the track is similar to the advice and conversations he has with the Brooklyn wordsmith. “It’s just me and Jay both rapping on it for an extended period of time,” Drake explained “It’s real rap. I do sing on it, but it’s just on the hook. It’s great. The perspective, the dynamic on the track — it’s me and Jay’s relationship on the song, basically. When you hear it, people will be like, ‘Oh man.’ That’s how we are — just the two. He definitely has guided me a lot, as far as his words and his advice. We have a real funny rapport. I always enjoy my conversations with Jay.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s “Light Up” verse? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Artists Lil Wayne Drake
