Swizz Beatz Says No Monster Mondays Tracks Will Make Haute Living

‘That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music,’ producer says of weekly free-music series. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Swizz Beatz is leaving his free music on the Web. The Grammy-nominated producer’s weekly Monster Mondays series of gratis ear goodies follows in the footsteps of fellow MC and songsmith Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays campaign , but unlike ‘Ye, Swizzy maintained that his upcoming Haute Living album will be largely free of Monster records. “Monster Mondays is its own entity for right now. But will I put my first single on Monster Mondays? 100 percent. Monster Mondays, Swizzworld,100 percent. I’m gonna promote my stuff when it’s time,” Swizz recently told MTV News. “That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music, which is now turning into them shooting videos for it, labels putting up budgets for it. It’s just a great forum.” True to the spirit of the initiative, some of the music has already turned up on other projects, like the Diddy-Dirty Money track “Ass on the Floor,” which first hit the Web via Monster Mondays but ultimately ended up on the trio’s debut LP. So far, everyone from Ace Hood to Busta Rhymes has participated in the campaign — which kicked off in October — but Swizzy singled out his team-up with lyrical legend Rakim as his personal highlight of the series. “My favorite song on there is ‘King Tut.’ Getting a chance to work with Rakim and let people to just hear him, like, in 2010 when he did it. Like, that’s Rakim right there. Just to be able to say that I did that was super fun and [there’s] no politics involved. We don’t gotta deal with nobody. It’s no politics — I’m not talking to no labels, no management. It’s like, ‘Yo, you either wanna do it or not,’ ” Swizz explained of the project’s energy. Swizz has also switched up Kanye’s original music-centric blueprint by putting out a brief documentary of the creation of “Speechless,” a track that features his superstar wife Alicia Keys and longtime Ruff Ryder crony Eve riffing over Yeezy’s “Devil in a New Dress” beat. As the hitmaker is apparently in full-on collaborative mode — outside music, Swizz has also struck up partnerships with Reebok and luxury car company Aston Martin — he also got the production pupils from his New York University class in on the Monster Monday action. “Then taking it to what I did with my wife with the documentary with her and Eve, taking a whole other side and adding a documentary vibe to it. The biggest thing out of the documentary, other than them seeing the process, was it was done by some of my students from NYU,” he said. “Just taking that and adding talent with talent, it’s just fun. It’s all fun.” What Monster Mondays track do you like best so far? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Swizz Beatz

By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the Oak Room on Wednesday Photo: Arnaldo Magnani/ Getty Images Lady Gaga loves to surprise fans with cameo appearances and performances. And on Wednesday night in New York City, Gaga did it again when she popped up at the Plaza Hotel’s famed nightclub, The Oak Room. Gaga took the stage during a scheduled set by her friend, singer/trumpeter Brian Newman, to perform two jazz standards, “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Orange Colored Sky.” Before Gaga’s surprise performance, Newman expressed his excitement over the show, tweeting, “Looking forward to the gig at the @oakroomny @theplazahotel tonight! First show of 2011!!” For her set, Gaga donned long blond locks and a leather-bandage-style S&M dress along with garters. In a video posted online, Gaga displayed her strong singing ability while forgoing her usual raucous onstage antics as she belted out the tunes for the cheering crowd. The club’s staff posted news of the performance on its Twitter page as it happened, telling fans to come by if they could and keeping those who couldn’t in the loop. “Come to the packed @oakroomny @theplazahotel right now to see LADY GAGA — singing, dancing — its amazing!!!” they tweeted. “Lady Gaga @oakroomny right now singing LIVE!!!!!… its packeddd.” It’s not the first time that Gaga has surprised Oak Room clubgoers during a show by Newman. Mother Monster also performed at the New York hotspot back in September, wearing a dress made of human hair. “There were no tickets sold,” the club said in a statement at the time. “She sang three songs as a surprise gig because she’s friends with the musician we have on Wednesdays, Brian Newman.” Related Artists Lady Gaga

Bon Jovi, AC/DC, U2 Top World Tours Of 2010

Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour placed fourth on the list. By Jocelyn Vena Bon Jovi Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images Bon Jovi showed all the newbies how it’s done. The veteran rock group had the most successful tour in 2010. And, following closely behind at #2 and #3 are fellow veteran acts AC/DC and U2, concert tracker Pollstar reports. The New Jersey act sold an impressive $201.1 million worth of tickets worldwide this year in a concert economy that was on the downslide. Around the world, ticket sales for the top 50 tours dropped 12 percent to $2.93 billion, and in North America, they dropped 15 percent to $1.69 billion. Bon Jovi beat out 2009’s top two acts, bumping AC/DC, who grossed $177 million in ticket sales, to #2, and U2, with $160.9 million (impressive, considering they had to postpone their North American leg to 2011 due to Bono’s back surgery), to #3 on the list. But hot on the heels of the aging rockers is Lady Gaga, the only woman in the top 10 tours for 2010. Gaga and her Monster Ball tour placed fourth on the list. According to the report, Gaga’s over-the-top spectacle grossed $133.6 million over the course of 138 shows, most of which took place outside of North America. Gaga may have only placed fourth, but she played more shows than the top three: Bon Jovi played only 80 shows, AC/DC played 40 and U2 played 32 shows. The rest of the top 10 is rounded out by Metallica at #5 (netting $110.1 million), pop crooner Michael Bubl

Lindsay Lohan Accuser Drops Charges

Police say they will look into the incident further. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Marsaili McGrath/ Getty Images After speaking out about a December 12 incident with Lindsay Lohan at the Betty Ford rehab facility, Dawn Holland has dropped her charges against the embattled starlet. The former rehab worker released a statement to TMZ noting that she wouldn’t pursue a case against Lohan. “Dawn will not continue to press charges against Lindsay, nor will she be assisting any further in the investigation or prosecution,” her lawyer, Kevin Davidson, said. Davidson continued that “a crime has quite simply not been committed by Ms. Lohan.” Holland is reportedly a recovering addict herself and does not want “in any way, shape or form to do anything that would violate Lindsay’s probation or cause an arrest.” E! News reports that while Holland may not be pursuing charges, the Palm Desert Police Department is keeping an investigation into the incident open. “We are continuing our investigation,” the spokeswoman said. “We hope to be done sometime in January.” When asked how Holland would respond if subpoenaed by the police department, her lawyer simply responded “she won’t.” Holland was a technician at the Betty Ford Center and was fired shortly after she gave a video interview in which she discussed the alleged altercation. “She was the only patient out of the three who was being very uncooperative and out of control,” Holland said in the video, explaining that Lohan had been acting defiant at the rehab center. “I did not touch the woman! I am not willing to risk my job over any patient.” Related Videos Lindsay Lohan: Crime And Punishment Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Lady Gaga To Make Born This Way Announcement New Year’s Eve

‘My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE,’ she writes in a Christmas tweet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is kicking 2011 off with a bang. The singer shared with her little monsters that, come New Year’s Eve, she will have a special announcement for her loyal fans about her upcoming album, Born This Way. She tweeted over the weekend: “Merry Christmas little monsters! I love you with all my heart. My gift to you is a BORN THIS WAY announcement Midnight on NEW YEARS EVE. -MM.” The Mother Monster didn’t reveal anything else about the announcement but did react to a fan-made video sending Christmas love to the superstar. “This is so darling!” she wrote . “You make me so happy, Im sending you monster kisses!” Gaga had always planned to end 2010 on a high note. She shared with Rolling Stone back in June that she had every intention of making an announcement on New Year’s Eve, even if what she had planned to announce was pre-empted. “I think I’m gonna get the album title tattooed on me and put out the photo,” she said of her plans six months ago. “I’ve been working on it for months now, and I feel very strongly that it’s finished right now. It came so quickly. Some artists take years; I don’t. I write music every day.” Since she already revealed her album title at the VMAs , what she plans to announce on New Year’s Eve is a mystery, but we’re sure her fans are counting down the moments. Gaga recently shared that the album will be her “most innovative.” A single is expected in February , and the album will follow shortly thereafter. “[The album is] a marriage of electronic music with major, epic, dare I even say, metal or rock and roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats,” Gaga said. “I think that lyrically this album is more poetic … It’s really written by the fans, they really wrote it for me because every night they’re funneling so much into me. So I wrote it for them. Born This Way is all about my little monsters and me, mother monster.” What do you think Gaga will unveil on New Year’s Eve? Share your guesses in the comments! Lady Gaga Dishes On Born This Way During London Show

During her concert on Friday, the pop star said her upcoming album ‘doesn’t have a bunch of rock ballads,’ confirmed that it will feature ‘You and I.’ By James Dinh Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News Throughout the year, Lady Gaga has not only talked up her forthcoming album, Born This Way, but she’s also previewed a few new tracks that may or may not appear on the release. On songs like “You and I” and “Living on the Radio,” Gaga strays from her usual dance-hit formula to explore a more Elton John-esque sound. However, during her recent Monster Ball Tour stop at London’s O2 Arena on Friday, the pop star told the roaring audience that the project won’t be full of too many piano-driven ballads. After asking concertgoers if they wanted to hear a new song, Mother Monster said , “Want to hear ‘You and I’? This one is going to be on Born This Way. It’s one of my favorites. The album doesn’t have a bunch of rock ballads or anything, but this is one of them.” Following her chit-chat with the audience, Gaga launched into tune, which finds the singer recalling a reunion with a lover. “There’s something, something about this place/ Something about lonely nights and my lipstick on your face/ Something, something about my cool Nebraska guy/ Yeah something about/ Baby you and I,” she sang while pounding away on her piano. In the midst of her “You and I” performance, the songbird took time to give herself props for the originality and creativity she puts into her material. “Now I don’t know if you know this, but for those of you who don’t know, I write all my own music,” she announced. “Every single lyric, melody and note was created by me. I am not manufactured. I’m a bad cat and coming for you ’cause I believe in you and I.” Later on in the song, she added, “It’s not that I don’t like to be humble, it’s just that pop music has a pretty bad rap,” before indulging in some of her usual impulsive piano antics. Gaga’s Little Monsters can expect to hear even more new tunes as early as February. Just a few weeks ago, she told fan site Lady-Gaga.net that the lead single from Born This Way will be released that month, while comparing the album to “bad kids going to church, having fun on a high level.” What kind of tracks are you looking forward to hear on Born This Way ?
