‘Love the Way You Lie’ Joins List Of Memorable Joseph Kahn Videos

Kahn has directed videos for Britney Spears, Eminem, and Lady Gaga. By James Dinh Rihanna on the set of the “Love the Way You Lie” music video Photo: Danny Mayer/ Eric Ford/ On Location Photos After much anticipation, the Joseph Kahn-directed video for Eminem and Rihanna’s chart-topping “Love the Way You Lie” debuted Thursday (August 4) on MTV. In the song, Em and Rihanna tell the intense story of a woman who stays with her male counterpart despite his violent habits. The video shows Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan engaging in a relationship that’s similarly emotionally destructive. Kahn, who has worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Rob Zombie, has a particular directing style that emphasizes CGI special effects and futuristic styling. Here are a few other highlights from his career. Britney Spears, “Toxic” In the 2004 clip for Spears’ flashy “Toxic,” the pop princess played an assassin on a quest to poison her cheating boyfriend. The clip employed eye-popping costumes for Spears — including a stewardess outfit and a glittery bodysuit — and quickly rose to the top of the pop princess’ videography. “The plot is pretty nonsensical. It’s just fun. [It’s like] James Bond flicks and sex,” Kahn told MTV News . Years later, the director would collaborate with Spears on the clip for “Womanizer” — in which he slyly referenced their earlier collaboration. U2, “Elevation” U2 went on a ride like no other when they joined forces with “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” for the 2001 video promoting “Elevation.” A call from an “evil Bono” set the mood for the action-filled video, which features the band on a rescue mission with Angelina Jolie thanks to Kahn inserting members into scenes from the film. With the help of Ms. Croft, U2 dodges the dangers of the bad Bono, although eventually good and evil come face to face in a battle of stereo and vocal power. But the good guys win out, and the band walks into a calm street that has cars and elephants floating overhead. Eminem, “Without Me” For most of Eminem’s career, the rapper has played the funny guy in his music videos. His clip for the 2002 hit single “Without Me” went further than mere gags, asserting his ability to poke fun at the controversies surrounding his music. Throughout the video, Em parodies a comic-book hero on a mission to save a young boy from listening to a copy of The Eminem Show , which is labeled with a dreaded ‘Parental Advisory’ sticker. While on his quest, Em manages to sleep with porn stars, practice yoga and appear on “The Real World.” Enrique Iglesias, “Hero” Understandably, Enrique Iglesias’ music videos have showcased his good looks and suave persona. His 2001 clip featured Jennifer Love Hewitt as the singer’s love interest and other half of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. The two are on the lam from Mickey Rourke, woh heads a rival group of bandits. After some steamy scenes with Hewitt, the pop star is found by Rourke’s gang and apparenly killed by them. Lady Gaga, “LoveGame” If there’s one thing Lady Gaga reps for, it’s the busy streets of New York City. Before the days of her music videos doubling as mini-movies, Kahn helped the singer take a journey through the Big Apple’s underground in a video that recalls Michael Jackson’s also-subway-set “Bad.” Accompanied by her crew of dancers, the singer drops it low in a subway station and dances the night away. “I worked with Joseph Kahn, and he did an amazing job. He didn’t just capture the fashion; he captured the artist,” Gaga told MTV News . What’s your favorite Joseph Kahn-directed music video? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Auditioners Weigh In: Jennifer Lopez Or Steven Tyler?

‘Idol’ hopefuls at New Jersey tryouts are split on who should sit at the judges’ table. By Kara Warner, with reporting by MTV News staff Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage It seems like every day brings some new bit of “American Idol” insider information or speculation. With the ratings juggernaut being down two judges — Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres — and the future uncertain for Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson , the rumor mill has been in overdrive. The first round of rumored replacements — Elton John, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Simpson — have fallen through, and Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s names have since dominated the conversation. Following up on fans’ reactions to DeGeneres’ exit and Ryan Seacrest’s recent comments that the judges might not be officially in place for weeks, MTV News hit up the “Idol” auditions in New Jersey on Tuesday (August 3) to see what the aspiring singers had to say about who would make the better judge: Lopez or Tyler. “Steven Tyler,” “Idol” wannabe Lindsey Laird said without hesitation. “Because he’s awesome. He’s from Aerosmith. That’s amazing.” Devon Michael sided with La Lopez. “That would be such an honor to stand in front of Jennifer Lopez after watching her for so many years,” he said. “She’s just versatile. She dances, she sings, she acts — it’s really admirable. She’s an inspiration to all the people here.” “I know who would be better looking,” Ben Anderton teased, before putting his support behind Tyler. “I actually think Steven Tyler would [be a better judge]. He’d give better feedback to the contestants about performance. The guy is a fantastic performer.” The Lopez fans, including enthusiastic supporter Shannon Leet, cited the “Jenny From the Block” singer’s versatility as one of her strongest qualifications. “I’ve wanted to meet her since I was a little girl,” Leet explained. “She’s an entrepreneur, actress, singer, dancer — she’s amazing.” Those in the Tyler camp were equally insistent, however, even if their enthusiasm had them thinking Tyler and Lopez were already on the audition premises. “I can’t wait to see him. I want to try and impress him,” Freddie Sosa said. “To me, he’s like a legend. I love his songs, I love his band. I’m looking forward to seeing him.” What do you think of Lopez’s and Tyler’s possible spots on the “Idol” judges’ table? Share your replacement ideas in the comments! Will Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video Set The Tone For His Album?

For clues, MTV News takes a closer look at clips for ‘Ye’s previous first singles. By Steven Roberts Kanye West 10.10.2005 Photo: MTV News Despite his newfound penchant for social media, Kanye West has kept quiet about what’s in store for the video for his newest single, “Power.” MTV News gathered a few clues, including a look at the videos for his previous first singles, for hints about what fans might expect from his latest. A photo from the Marco Brambilla-directed “video project” hit the Web last Thursday and it featured a sullen-faced West wearing his oversize, gold Horus chain and standing between rows of columns. Still, West urged fans to not get too excited — via his Twitter. “Preview of the ‘Power’ Trailer, it’s just a still pic. Don’t get to[o] hype.” Naturally, everyone got hyped, and West tweeted a link to a New York Times article about Brambilla’s involvement with the project soon after. Brambilla described the video as “kind of apocalyptic, in a very personal way.” It remains to be seen how it will shape up, but it seems certain the clip will set the tone for his still-untitled fifth album. “Through the Wire” The video for West’s triumphant, Chaka Khan-sampled first single from his debut LP, The College Dropout, featured a bulletin board of Polaroids documenting ‘Ye’s recovery from a near-fatal car crash and early footage of West’s road to recognition. With his jaw still wired shut, West narrates the story of how his life-threatening accident fueled his fire as an MC. The video reflected the mood of West’s debut, which saw the Chicago native detailing his early struggles trying to get put on in hip-hop after being overlooked and underappreciated. West spent years behind the scenes, producing for the likes of Jay-Z, Mos Def and Beanie Sigel, but received little encouragement when it came to his dreams of rapping. It wasn’t until his accident, however, that even he began to give it his all. “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” Following the enormous success of College Dropout, West upped the ante with the video for “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” The black-and-white, Hype Williams-directed video finds West riding around in a Mercedes-Benz in Prague. As he explores the city’s lavish architecture, he’s haunted by the sins of wealth in the form of children who’ve died mining diamonds in West Africa. The video reflects the creative steps forward that Kanye took on his second album, Late Registration. West collaborated with composer/producer Jon Brion on the project, which combined hip-hop production, string arrangements, horn riffs and piano. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” West again reached out to Hype Williams for the video for “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” The visual was filmed in the desert with West rapping to a track featuring some Young Jeezy ad-libs. The barren backdrop was perfect for the boastful song, as Graduation became the album on which West began to separate himself from the rest of the rap universe. Famously criticized for not having a street record, Kanye dropped “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and it became not only an anthem for the streets, but nearly every MySpace page. It was during this period that West also topped 50 Cent in a much-hyped sales duel. Following the album’s release, MTV named ‘Ye 2008’s “Hottest MC in the Game” “Love Lockdown” In all honesty, the video for “Love Lockdown” may not have played as large a role in helping to set the tone for 808s & Heartbreak. West had lost his mother, Donda West , in 2007 due to complications from surgery and broke off his engagement to his fianc

For AP, Angry Conservative Are ‘Demagogues,’ But Obama’s ‘Sharp Tone Is Justified’

The Associated Press gave voice to a Repuiblican Congressman today to bemoan what he sees as “poisonous ‘demagoguery'” from the usual suspects, including, by the AP’s own account, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Rep. Bob Inglis, R-S.C., who lost in a primary for the GOP nomination last month, went so far as to claim that heated political rhetoric is “dividing the country into partisan camps that really look a lot like Shia and Sunni.” The AP did not feel the need to qualify this absurd statement (and it is absurd, given that a few years ago Sunni and Shia tribes in Iraq were “systematically trying to assassinate moderates”). And while the AP now feels the need to unquestionably parrot claims that conservatives are dividing the nation into potentially murderous political sects, just last year it ran an article headlined “Obama spokesman says sharp tone is justified.” By the AP’s unquestioning accounts, heated conservative rhetoric is dangerous, but heated liberal rhetoric is necceary for the health of the nation. Wrote the AP in Febrauary of last year:     President Barack Obama’s spokesman is defending the sharper tone Obama is taking to push his economic stimulus plan through Congress.     Obama sharpened his rhetoric while addressing House Democrats in Virginia on Thursday. He appeared to be sending a message to Republicans as he warned against turning back to the policies of the last eight years and insisted that voters chose a new course in November.     Spokesman Robert Gibbs says Obama is simply “fighting on behalf of” the 3.6 million Americans who’ve lost jobs since the start of the recession. Contrast that tone — understanding of, even laudatory towards the President’s claims — with the mood of its piece on Inglis:     While not naming names, 12-year incumbent Rep. Bob Inglis suggested in interviews with The Associated Press that tea party favorites such as former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and right-wing talk show hosts like Glenn Beck are the culprits…     Inglis said voters eventually will discover that you’re “preying on their fears” and turn away…     Inglis said the rhetoric also distracts from the real problems that politicians should be trying to resolve, such as budget deficits and energy security.     “It’s a real concern, because I think what we’re doing is dividing the country into partisan camps that really look a lot like Shia and Sunni,” he said, referring to the two predominant Islamic denominations that have feuded for centuries. “It’s very difficult to come together to find solutions.” So conservatives using harsh language is “preying” on the fears of Americans, distracts from the issues, and has the potential to turn political foes into something resembling warring religious clans. Meanwhile, President Obama’s use of harsh language is “fighting on behalf” of the unemployed and channeling the will of the public and anyone who says otherwise is trying to “[turn] back to the policies of the” Bush administration. Got it. Thanks, AP.

Frustrated Locals Not Waiting for Official "OK" to Try to Stop Oil and Save Oiled Animals and Birds

PART ONE… http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/21/oil.spill.okaloosa.county/index.html?hpt=C1 By Jamie Gumbrecht, CNN June 21 2010 4:30pm EDT Photo: Stephanie Neumann holds a Northern Gannet Okaloosa Island, Florida – Vacationers were the first to notice the bird fumbling in the water near this popular tourist beach last week. He bobbed and swayed differently than other birds, and didn't react when humans came dangerously close. Once he was ashore, they could see why: a light sheen of oil covered his feathers. Animal health technician Stephanie Neumann tried to rescue the Northern Gannet, but beach safety officers stopped her. Her coworkers at the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge already had stabilized birds and a sea turtle affected by the Gulf oil disaster, but officials wanted to know: Did she have a contract with BP? Could she – and the bird – wait while they verified her organization's status? “They're trying to do their job,” Neumann said as she crouched over the motionless bird, wrapped in a white sheet and barely hidden from the stares of kids and parents. “They have to make sure protocol is followed.” When brown clumps of tar began to wash up on the snow-white beaches around Destin last week, the mood in this sunny beach community shifted from optimistic denial to furious worry. Local ideas about how to protect the area clashed with plans from BP, state and federal agencies. Community volunteers struggling to cut through protocol cheered a decision by Okaloosa County to defy BP and the feds. They were done waiting. They'd use their own plans. “This is ridiculous. We'll take the heat. We would do whatever it took to stop the oil,” said the county commission chairman, Wayne Harris. After months of wrangling with agencies responding to the spill, Harris wasn't willing to stake the county's ecology and economy only on boom that captures or absorbs oil. The commission authorized emergency management teams to add skimmers, barges and extra boom, and an air wall they hope will push the oil away. They plan to layer prevention measures in the pass that connects the Gulf to Choctawhatchee Bay, where fresh and salt water mix and dolphins play. Harris said the plan could cost up to $6 million per month, which he hopes will be covered by money from BP. The county developed its oil plan in the days after the disaster began to unfold, but it was plagued by miscommunications, disagreements and bureaucracy once it left local hands, Harris said. Communities along the Gulf Coast have made similar complaints. Mayors grilled a BP official about the response during a press conference earlier this month. In Magnolia Springs, Alabama, locals went outside the federal plan and risked incarceration by adding boom and barges to protect Weeks Bay. In Pointe Aux Chenes, Louisiana, Native Americans pitched in to string boom near an island where many of their ancestors are buried. Harris said some of his county's efforts may work; others may not. “Doing something is better than doing nothing,” he said. On the Okaloosa Island beach, local response to the oiled Gannet was quicker, but the federal response had less red tape to work through. U.S. Fish and Wildlife workers arrived before Neumann's status was verified, so she left their bird in their care. “Time is essential with these guys,” she said. “Every minute counts.” For the rest of Okaloosa County, more boom and barges were starting to appear in the water. The county commission vote was “smart,” and sped up the state and federal response, said public safety director Dino Villani, who was quickly invited to an “olive branch” meeting in Mobile. Most of the county's preferred plans are moving forward, Villani said, and they'll continue to adapt as the oil moves throughout their waters. Harris said the plans would have gone forward even without approval from BP or other government agencies. “I'm sure they're cussing. I'm sure they're cussing us bad,” Harris said. “If we had waited, we'd still be waiting. Why did it take us giving an ultimatum?” Charles Diorio, a Coast Guard commander in Mobile, said some communities decided to implement their own plans once they saw they didn't top the list of state and federal priorities, if they were on the list at all. Some just wanted to act before the mess – and response agencies' attention – began to move their way. Now that oil is reaching Florida's shores, resources are shifting there, Diorio said, and there's a plan to meet with Okaloosa commissioners this week. “Now is the time to make sure these relationships are still working and strong and the lines of communication are open,” he said.
