‘Transformers’ Stars Reveal Tricks Behind Filming Building-Escape Scene

‘We all felt 12 again, sliding down the side of this building, shooting, screaming,’ Tyrese Gibson tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Jaimie Trueblood For those who’ve seen ” Transformers: Dark of the Moon ,” there is so much going on in the film that one could spend the next 12 months breaking down all the dirty details. We’ve already tackled the nods to “Star Trek” and the “Transformers”-specific Easter eggs , so today we turn our attention to one of the film’s most impressive action sequences: the part when evil Decepticon Shockwave sends his massive, spinning, snakelike destroyer after our protagonists, who become trapped in the upper stories of a tall building. The Transformer proceeds to cut the building in half, leaving our heroes no option but to jump out of the windows and slide down the outside of the building to safety. MTV News had the scene’s stars, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tyrese Gibson explain how they managed to pull off that sequence. “The building comes up on what I can only describe as a crane,” Whiteley explained of the rig used to support and move the specific set piece. “It tilts to about a 40-degree angle. It’s built to look like the outside of a skyscraper,” she said. “Shia, myself, Tyrese, the Marines, we all set at the top, Mike [director Michael Bay] would scream ‘Action!’ and then we would slide down this thing,” she recalled. “And then flower pots, chairs, paper and fake glass, tennis balls, every office supply you could possibly think of would get thrown down after us.” Despite the gravity of that particular scene, it turns out that the boys thought of the tilting skyscraper set piece more like a ride at a county fair. “This thing had to be 150 to 200 feet in the air. It was like a huge slide,” Gibson said. “We all felt 12 again, sliding down the side of this building, shooting, screaming, doing everything we had to do in those scenes.” “It was scary stuff,” he added with a smile. “It was scary with the idea that we are about to be eaten, eaten alive.” “We shot that for three weeks or so,” LaBeouf said. “You’re basically pulling yourself on rope to get to the top of the thing. It’s like a big slide, you know those slides they have at fairs where you get the little brown bag? Brown bag slides, sort of like that.” Whiteley added that in the midst of all the fun had while sliding, she learned very quickly to pay attention to her landing and get out of the way when she reached the bottom of the set piece. “I’d always hit the bottom first. It took one time to realize if I didn’t get out of the way really quick, I was going to get flattened by a 300-pound man coming quite quickly after me!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Mission: Impossible 4’ Is ‘Intense,’ Katie Holmes Says

Mrs. Tom Cruise says ‘Ghost Protocol’ is ‘the best ‘Mission’ yet.’ By Kara Warner Katie Homes & Guillermo Del Toro Photo: MTV News While we’ve been awaiting an official trailer for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” — which is said to drop in front of this week’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” — a French version leaked online Monday (June 27), and reportedly contains plenty of expected shots of Tom Cruise involved in crazy action sequences as super-spy Ethan Hunt. Since we have yet to see the trailer or any footage ourselves, when MTV News caught up with Cruise’s better half, Katie Holmes, Monday during the press day for “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” we asked if she’s seen any of the film yet. “I have. I had an advanced screening,” she said with a laugh, adding that it’s a perk of being married to the film’s star. As for her thoughts about Cruise’s death-defying stunts in the film, particularly those he performed atop Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building), Holmes turned the question over to Guillermo del Toro, who produced “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” “What did you think, Guillermo, about the Burj?” she asked him. “I love it!” he said, at which point they both agreed that Cruise’s stunts were scarier than their film, which revolves around the demonic activities of a group of terrifying little creatures that seek out and kill humans, particularly children. “It’s amazing,” Holmes continued. “The movie is going to be very cool and intense and the best ‘Mission’ yet.” The actress also mentioned that she’d be game for a role that required a few crazy stunts herself. “I think it sounds fun,” she said. Del Toro then chimed in with his own “Mission: Impossible Diaries,” so to speak: “I live ‘Mission: Impossible.’ It’s what I call my diet,” he joked, and then proceeded to hum the “Mission: Impossible” theme song, while miming his insatiable appetite, making Holmes burst out laughing. Holmes weighed-in: “I have a lot of ‘Mission: Impossible’ moments, just being a mom.” Del Toro agreed: “Yes, coping with the home front.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Michael Bay Really Wants You to See Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 3-D

With another weekend of disappointing 3-D grosses in the books — Cars 2 was a hit, but mostly just in two dimensions — the pressure on Transformers: Dark of the Moon is mounting. Not that Michael Bay minds . The director is so sure of his work on Dark of the Moon that he’s telling fans to see it on the biggest screen possible. Really, he wrote a letter and everything.

‘Cars 2’ Parks At #1 For Weekend Box-Office Debut

‘Bad Teacher,’ starring Cameron Diaz, makes a strong showing at #2, with ‘Green Lantern’ following behind at #3. By Ryan J. Downey “Cars 2” Photo: Disney “Cars 2” may be the worst-reviewed movie in Pixar’s storied history, but that didn’t stop the animated sequel from maintaining the studio’s streak of box-office number ones. The second entry in the merchandise-friendly franchise took in $68 million over the weekend, according to distributor Walt Disney Studios, making it Pixar’s 12th consecutive movie to debut atop the box-office charts. Thanks to higher ticket prices and expensive 3-D screenings, “Cars 2” enjoyed the fifth-biggest opening for a Pixar film ever. In terms of attendance, however, the “Cars 2” debut was ahead of only “A Bug’s Life,” “Ratatouille” and the beloved company’s first feature film, 1995’s “Toy Story.” The 3-D fatigue evidenced by other recent openings continued as a mere 40 percent of moviegoers chose to see “Cars 2” in that format (versus the 60 percent who opted to see “Toy Story 3” in 3-D). “Bad Teacher,” the weekend’s other new wide release, debuted at #2 with $31 million. It was a strong showing for the reportedly low-budget Cameron Diaz vehicle, which industry watchers had predicted would be less well-received. Debuting the adult-oriented comedy against the family-oriented “Cars 2” was apparently a wise choice on the part of Sony Pictures, who released the film. Warner Bros., meanwhile, watched “Green Lantern” drop 66 percent in its second weekend of release. A sequel was already in development before Ryan Reynolds hit the screen as the DC Comics hero, but there has been little news about those plans since its lukewarm debut. “Lantern” made $18.4 million over the weekend for an $89.3 million total. With an estimated production budget of $200 million and a major marketing campaign behind it, “Green Lantern” has not done well. “Super 8” bears the distinction of being the only well-reviewed film in the top five. JJ Abrams’ nostalgic homage to ’80s coming-of-age classics took in $12.1 million for a $95.2 million total. Coming in at #5, Jim Carrey’s “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” dropped 44 percent with $10.3 million for a $39.4 million two-week total. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” seems a safe bet for next weekend’s number one. Linkin Park Talk Next Album From Moscow’s Red Square

LP’s performance of ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ single ‘Iridescent’ in historic landmark airs Friday at 8:55 p.m. on all MTV channels. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington (file) Linkin Park’s voluminous A Thousand Suns was a departure, to say the very least. And, from the sound of things, they’re getting ready to depart once again with a brand-new album that’s already in its infancy. At least that’s what Linkin Park told MTV News in Moscow, where they’ll perform the Suns song — and lead single from the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” soundtrack — “Iridescent” on Friday from the iconic Red Square, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere (a performance that will air on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia at 8:55 p.m. ET/PT). Turns out they’ve been working on new material for months now, and things are finally beginning to take shape. “We’re always writing. It’s hard to explain to people in simple terms what it means to us; the way we do it is a little weird and unique,” LP’s Mike Shinoda said. “We kind of write it and record it at the same time; we can do it on the road at all times. I mean, I was in my hotel room throwing something together at, like, 2 a.m. But what it takes to go from one of those demos to a finished song, I mean, we really obsess over it. It takes a while.” And to that end, Linkin Park said there’s still no firm release date for the new album (which will once again be produced by Rick Rubin), but they do know that it will see the light of day sooner rather than later, which, for them, would be yet another departure. “We do have a really great head start. We’ve got some great music, some good ideas. The creativity has continued to flow for us for the last few years, consistently,” Chester Bennington said. “So, we do plan on having this record out much quicker than what we’ve turned out in the past — that was one of our goals — and I feel like we’re in a really good place now.” Of course, the next logical question would be: What does the new album sound like? And while LP weren’t about to give up all the details (“Right now, it sounds like blips and bleeps and pieces,” Bennington laughed), they’re adamant that it will most certainly sound different than any of their previous efforts … mostly because that’s been the goal with every record they make. “The fans, what they always ask is, ‘What’s it going to sound like?’ ” Shinoda said. “And, for us, when we go into a record, from the beginning until now, the attitude has been ‘We’re going to challenge ourselves, and try to be better songwriters, try and come up with something that’s original.’ And we can’t say, ‘Oh, it’s going to sound like one of our other records,’ because the goal is actually not to do that.” Linkin Park’s Red Square performance will premiere Friday, June 24, at 8:55 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia. ‘Bad Teacher’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Before signing up for Cameron Diaz’s class, study up with our fun facts. By Eric Ditzian Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake in “Bad Teacher” Photo: Sony It’s been more than a month since “Bridesmaids” slayed us at the cinema. We’re desperately in need of some hard-R laughs, a few gross-out moments that make us cringe, and the reminder that as crazy as we might be, we’re not nearly as loco as the folks we’re watching onscreen. Thus, we say thanks to “Bad Teacher” as it floats, on a comedic cloud of profanity and penis jokes, into theaters. Cameron Diaz stars as Elizabeth Halsey, an educator less concerned with math lessons than she is in smoking pot and calculating her way into marriage with any filthy-rich doofus. She meets the perfect mark in Justin Timberlake’s Scott Delacorte, a substitute teacher and a guy so freaking nice there’s got be something wrong with him. And then we have Jason Segel’s sly gym teacher; even though he’s got the hots for Halsey, his paycheck doesn’t have nearly enough digits to entice the leggy blonde. But all this is just the setup. The punch comes in a series of outlandish events that, if we were to reveal them here, would just spoil the fun. What we can do is tell you everything you need to know about “Bad Teacher” before hitting the multiplex this weekend. That’s where our cheat sheet comes into play. Getting Ready for Class News of the film, penned by “Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, broke in December of 2009. Diaz had signed on , but the rest of the cast had yet to be filled out. That changed a few months later, when Timberlake and Segel hopped aboard . Though Diaz had formerly dated JT, the actress had no qualms about stepping in front of the camera with him. “He’s the best person for the job. He’s going to be hilarious,” she said. “He’s clearly a very talented comedian; look at his ‘Saturday Night Live’ [skits]. He’s fantastic. He’s going to be so great.” School’s in Session Filming kicked off in March. Nearly a year later, a truly filthy red-band trailer popped up online, giving us a very clear idea of how truly terrible a teacher Diaz would be: “Are you f—ing kidding me?” she writes on a student’s test. While the comedy’s raunchiness was no surprise, Timberlake’s weirdo of a sub certainly was. As Diaz later explained to us , “He gives us a character that you have not seen yet before — not just him, but pretty much anyone. It’s just a very interesting character and a lot of fun to watch. By the end of it, you’re like, ‘What is up with that dude?’ It’s hilarious.” The Final Exam As part of our Summer Movie Preview Week, we debuted an exclusive photo of Diaz getting ready for a fundraising car wash unlike any that you might recall from your school days and also sat down for a chat with the woman herself. “She’s miserable. She’s not happy with her world, and she doesn’t pretend that she is,” Diaz said of her character. “Her pain is real. She’s living a very painful existence, so there’s no humor to her in this.” Sure, she’s a woman in pain. But there’s also something liberating about the way she just doesn’t give a hoot about anything. “I think that’s why people love Elizabeth,” Diaz told us at the film’s premiere in New York City. “It’s because everyone wants to be her, even for an hour, maybe a day. If you get away with a week — oh my gosh! I got to play her for six weeks. So yeah, it was a lot of fun.” “The first 30 pages, I’m like, ‘I am not playing this. There is no way I can play this character. There [are] no redeeming qualities to this character,’ ” she recalled of the script in an earlier chat. “And by the end of it, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is genius! There’s no redeeming qualities to this character!’ We got to the end of the script, and we’re not apologizing for anything she said. It’s a very modest arc.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Bad Teacher.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Shia LaBeouf Explains His Kid Cudi Connection

‘Transformers’ star says he ended up directing Cudi’s ‘Maniac’ and ‘Marijuana’ videos because of mutual friend Cage. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LaBeouf Photo: MTV News From the outside looking in, the friendship and working partnership that actor Shia LaBeouf and rapper Kid Cudi have established recently seems only slightly unlikely. However, upon closer examination of Cudi’s track record in working with Hollywood types, and LaBeouf’s relationship with “Maniac” featured performer Cage, their collaborations on two of Cudi’s videos, “Maniac” and “Marijuana,” isn’t that unexpected. When MTV News caught up with LaBeouf recently as he promoted “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” we asked the aspiring director how the Cudi/Cage/LaBeouf magic began with music, and how it ended with a trip to Amsterdam’s infamous Cannabis Cup. “[Cage] is one of my good friends. Cage, Chris Palko, and I had been trying to make a movie about him for a while,” LaBeouf explained. “Cudi hit [Cage] up and did a song with him. Cage sent me the song, called ‘Maniac,’ so initially, we started prepping this video, which is really like a short horror movie that I made that comes out on Halloween,” he said. “In the interim, while we were finishing up the effects on it, [Cudi] told me he was going to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup.” LaBeouf jumped at the chance to continue working with Cudi, and joked that a trip to the legendary land where cannabis is legal was too good to pass up. “It’s as big as Spielberg,” he said with a laugh. “It is for a 25-year-old male who has all these crazy fantasies about Amsterdam, which every male my age has, there’s that college trip you always want to take,” he admitted. “And to do that with Cudi when he’s a judge, and I get to roll with him with my 8mm camera [like] an ‘Easy Rider’ documentarian, I felt like Cameron Crowe or something.” Despite all the references to the drug, that trip and the clip that came from it are Cudi’s send-off to smoking weed. “It was almost like an R.I.P. video to my whole smoking career,” Cudi told MTV News of the “Marijuana” clip earlier this month.
