‘Harry Potter’ Expected To Smash Box-Office Records

‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2’ could break $158.4 million opening-weekend record of ‘The Dark Knight.’ By Gil Kaufman Daniel Radcliffe and Ralph Finnes in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. It takes a powerful wizard to defeat “The Dark Knight,” but based on early media reports, all indications are that the final episode in the onscreen Harry Potter saga, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” is on track to beat the $158.4 million opening-weekend record set by “The Dark Knight” in 2008. Thanks to a combination of breathless, nostalgic anticipation for the last installment in the series, a raft of sold-out midnight screenings on Thursday and higher ticket prices for the first 3-D installment in the $6 billion franchise, experts are predicting that a series of records could fall by Sunday. According to the Los Angeles Times , thanks to 10,000 midnight screenings on Friday (July 15) and nearly sold-out IMAX shows through Saturday, the movie had already rolled up an estimated $45 million box office by Thursday before the doors had opened for a single showing. To put that into perspective, that’s a shade under the $53 million that “Green Lantern” made over the course of its entire opening-weekend last month. “Potter” is opening in 4,575 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, and Deadline Hollywood predicted that based on the early tracking, it could smash the “Dark Knight” high-water mark and possibly reach $180 million in opening-weekend grosses. Another record almost sure to crumble is the biggest single day ever, which was set by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which pulled in $72 million, a figure that could be eclipsed (pun intended) by an estimated $80 million that “Hallows” is projected to collect between the $40 million in midnight screenings and an additional $40 million on Friday. Look for “Hallows” to also take the biggest foreign opening-weekend crown, a record recently set by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which boosted $260 million earlier this summer. “Potter” studio Warner Bros. expects the film to smash that figure, though it’s unclear if it will be able to beat the worldwide seven-day opening-gross mark set by “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which raked in $402 million in its first week in June. A good sign, though, is that “Hallows” has already broken records Down Under. The Hollywood Reporter noted that following its midnight opening on Wednesday, it took in more than $7.4 million in its first 24 hours in Australia, smashing the previous mark of nearly $1.8 million in the first 24 hours for “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’: More Sequels On The Way?

Box-office experts look into the franchise’s future. By Kara Warner Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures Given the spectacular box office grosses of “Transformers” and its sequel, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (despite being lambasted by critics and audiences), it is not all that surprising that the three-quel, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” has made box office history and a ton of money in the first few days of its release. Michael Bay’s third robot-tastic installment hauled in an estimated $97.5 million over the holiday weekend, making it 2011’s new biggest opening-weekend record holder, which was previously set by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” So, what does this mean? In a nutshell, we’ll be getting more “Transformers” movies, no matter what Bay and star Shia LaBeouf have said or decided about their “retirement” plans. “I guarantee that Paramount is currently thinking of ways to keep the franchise going,” Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino told MTV News. “Unfortunately, making a deal for a property this big won’t be easy,” he added, speaking to moving forward with the franchise without Bay and LaBeouf. “I’m sure a bunch of directors and stars will be kicked around publicly before new hires are made.” Entertainment Weekly senior writer Anthony Breznican agreed that the robots will live on to rule future box offices. “We will definitely see another movie; how soon is a good question,” he said. “I took Bay seriously when he said he was finished directing [the ‘Transformers’ films], and they can reboot them again with someone else. That’s not something you say if it’s a negotiating tactic. I believed him. I think Shia is serious,” he added. “Three movies in this universe are a lot for an actor. Unless you want to be known only as the ‘Transformers’ guy, you have to move on and do something different.” ” ‘Harry Potter’ will be gargantuan,” Breznican said. “People are going to want to see it again and again, and that’s a real tribute to the filmmakers and J.K. Rowling’s storytelling. It’s a story where you invest a lot in those characters and they invest a lot back. There is a lot of sacrifice and affection; that movie packs an emotional punch,” he said. “It’s going to blow ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ out of the water.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Transformers: Dark of the Moon Breaks July 4 Record, Hits $116M Over Four Day Weekend

Michael Bay ‘s juggernaut of a sequel Transformers: Dark of the Moon didn’t just spank Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts at the box office; it handily seized the title of the biggest domestic July 4 opener of all time from previous champ Spider-Man 2 and should hit $116.4M over the four-day weekend for a $181.1M domestic take. On top of that, Transformers 3 is performing even better overseas than in the U.S. of A. — and it has yet to open in Transformers -loving Japan. Bow to our robot overlords!

‘Transformers’ Sequel Sets Box-Office Record

Michael Bay’s third installment in the series had the highest-grossing July 4th debut ever. By Ryan J. Downey “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures There’s no hiding the success of the “robots in disguise” franchise: “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” enjoyed the highest-grossing Fourth of July film debut ever over the weekend. Summer sequel mania was in full swing over the Independence Day holiday as the latest “Transformers” movie took in an estimated $97.5 million. “Transformers” beat the 2011 opening-weekend record previously set by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Director Michael Bay’s third installment in the “Transformers” series took in more than $180 million during its six-day opening, which started with Tuesday night previews. While it beat the Independence Day record held by “Spider-Man 2” thanks to inflation and 3-D screenings, it fell short of the superhero sequel in terms of overall attendance and far behind the last “Transformers” opening as well. Only 38 percent of major critics found the film favorable, according to Rotten Tomatoes . Last weekend’s big sequel, “Cars 2,” suffered from the largest second-week drop in Pixar’s history. The talking-car-centered animated kid flick fell 60 percent to #2 with an estimated $26.2 million, with an 11-day total of $123 million. Cameron Diaz’s “Bad Teacher” was #3 on the box-office chart with $14.5 million for an 11-day total of $59.9 million. Critics have not been kind to “Larry Crowne,” which opened at #4 with just $13.1 million. ” ‘Larry Crowne’ has Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and a good premise and a colorful supporting cast,” wrote Roger Ebert . “But what it doesn’t have is a reason for existing.” The weekend’s other new romantic comedy, Selena Gomez’s “Monte Carlo,” failed to even crack the top five with its $7.4 million debut. “Super 8” was #5 with $7.8 million. JJ Abrams’ homage to co-producer Steven Spielberg’s thrill-filled coming-of-age stories has earned more than $108 million in four weeks of release. Friday Box Office: Transformers Continues Assault, Larry Crowne Flops

All hail Megatron! While Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned “just” $33.5 million on Friday night — 15 percent behind what Revenge of the Fallen grabbed on its first Friday in 2009 — the Michael Bay-directed explosion orgy is on track to bank $185 million through its first seven days. That might be disappointing, until you consider the foreign grosses, which are expected to top $200 million over the same timeframe. The outlook isn’t as rosy for Larry Crowne : the film crashed its moped into fourth place on the chart, and won’t top $20 million for the weekend. Your Friday box office is here.

‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’: Hunting For Easter Eggs

Hidden treasures in the threequel include new ‘bots and a not-so-new heroine. By Kara Warner Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Jaimie Trueblood As is to be expected with Michael Bay movies, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is jam-packed with a lot more than his patented brand of eye-popping action sequences. The movie is two hours and thirty-seven minutes, after all, so even with all the Autobot vs. Decepticon fighting action, there is plenty of room for an actual plot and, more importantly, a ton of fun Easter eggs for the most perceptive fans out there. In addition to all the “Star Trek” nods , Bay and company have cleverly inserted five “Transformers”-specific Easter eggs in the film. Thanks to the eagle eye of Splash Page editor Rick Marshall, along with his extensive “Transformers” knowledge, MTV News is proud to provide you with a few key things to look out for while watching “Dark of the Moon.” Not-So-New Girl Carly Played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the character of Carly is new to Bay’s “Transformers” but has a meaty role as one of the humans in the “Transformers” cartoons. Carly is the wife of Spike Witwicky in the original animated series, the inspiration for Shia LaBeouf’s character Sam Witwicky. The Ark of the Moon The opening of “Dark of the Moon” is all about a mysterious ship that crash lands on the moon. Optimus Prime calls that ship “the Ark,” which is the name of the spaceship that first brought Optimus and the rest of the Transformers to Earth in the original cartoon. Spock’s Speaking-Part Past We mentioned the Nimoy connection in our “Trek” Easter eggs article, but his work is such a nerdy thrill, it gets another mention here. In “Dark of the Moon,” Nimoy is the voice of Sentinel Prime, which marks the second time he has lent his voice to a robot in the series. In the 1986 classic “Transformers: The Animated Movie,” Nimoy voiced Galvatron, Megatron’s equally mischievous successor. Bridges in Space We won’t go into details about how a space bridge may or may not be mentioned and/or used in “Dark of the Moon,” but throughout Transformers history onscreen and in comics, the space bridge allowed for travel between Earth and Cybertron. Old New Faces “Dark of the Moon” introduces us to a slew of new Autobots and Decepticons, although the die-hard “Transformers” fans out there will recognize the following from the cartoons. New-to-the-movie Autobots include: Wheeljack (has a strong Albert Einstein-like resemblance), Mirage (a red sports car) and Optimus Prime’s fancy silver trailer. Decepticon debuts include: fan-favorite master of destruction Shockwave and bird-like Lazerbeak, who transforms into a variety of objects, save for the excellent cassette-tape shape of his cartoon counterpart.
