6 Alternative Uses for LEGO Bricks

The Lego Company is based out of Denmark, and the word Lego comes from the Danish word Leg Godt which means “play well”. 7 LEGO sets are being sold by retailers every second around the world, and more than 400 billion LEGO bricks have been already produced since 1949. Stacked on top of each other, this is enough to connect the Earth and the Moon ten times over! The number of combinations you can build are practically endless. With just six 8-stud LEGO bricks you can build over 102 million combinations! Multiply it by different possible LEGO uses and you get unlimited possibilities! It is also estimated that there are about 50-60 Lego bricks for every person on the planet, and children around the world spend 5 billion hours a year playing with LEGO bricks. Bored Panda did some investigation too, and found these 5 Cool Alternative Uses of LEGO. Enjoy, share and comment! http://www.boredpanda.com/alternative-uses-for-lego-bricks/ added by: atomiclegion

Moon and Mars August 2010

The hoax has been around since 2003 when Mars was 56 million kilometres away — the closest it has ever been to Earth. But it wasn#39;t anywhere near as close as the moon and looked like a star. Mars will not be the same size as the moon on Friday — it#39;s a heavenly hoax. An email is making the rounds describing a once-in-a-lifetime event in the night sky on Friday. It says Mars will be 56 million kilometres away, making it seem like the Earth has two moons. But don#39;t be fooled, astronome

Tonight’s the Night to Really See Our Magnificent Planet Jupiter! Lots of Photos, Even a Map, to Help You Enjoy Your Experience

Photos: Jewels of Jupiter By Joe Rao updated 8/25/2010 1:52:00 PM ET For many weeks, the planet that has dominated our evening sky has been brilliant Venus, visible low in the west-southwest sky for about 90 minutes after sunset. But after Venus sets, it is Jupiter that takes over for the rest of the night, outshining everything in the night sky but the moon. This week, Jupiter — the solar system's largest planet — rises around 8:45 p.m. local daylight time. On Thursday evening, if youre facing east soon after 9 p.m., you'll see the nearly full moon standing about 6 degrees above Jupiter. Your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees in width, so just over half of a fist will separate Jupiter from the moon. The two objects will remain visible through the rest of the night, peaking toward the south at around 3 a.m., at an altitude that measures more than halfway from the horizon to the point directly overhead (the zenith). Jupiter rules In the coming weeks we will see Jupiter loom as large and as bright as it ever can get from our earthly vantage point, because it's nearing perihelion — that point in its 12-year orbit that places it nearest to the sun. Jupiter now appears 11 percent larger and more than one and a half times brighter than it did back in 2005, when it was near aphelion (that point in its orbit farthest from the sun). Even steadily held 7-power binoculars will show Jupiter as a tiny disk. A small telescope will do much better, while in larger instruments, Jupiter resolves into a series of red, yellow, tan and brown shadings, as well as a wealth of other telescopic detail. Amateur astronomers have been imaging this big planet all summer long as it has been approaching the Earth. In less than a month, on Sept. 21, the planet will be in opposition. That's when Jupiter is nearest to Earth and shining in the sky all night long, from sunset to sunrise. And don't forget Jupiter's four major moons, discovered 400 years ago by Galileo. They can be seen in any telescope and even binoculars. They orbit Jupiter so quickly (with orbital periods ranging from 1.68 days for Io to 16.7 days for Callisto) that they change their appearance from night to night. Size (and distance) matters When you look at the moon and Jupiter on Thursday night, you might ponder the difference in both their sizes and distances. The moon, of course, far outshines Jupiter — by more than 9 magnitudes, or a brightness ratio of 4,370 to 1. But the moon is also much smaller than Jupiter. The moon's diameter is 2,158 miles (3,473 kilometers), while Jupiter's is 88,846 miles (142,984 km). What makes the moon loom so much larger and brighter is its distance. On Thursday night, the moon will be 251,200 miles (404,270 kilometers) from Earth. But Jupiter will be 1,496 times more distant: 375.9 million miles (605 million kilometers) away. Gyrating Jupiter? I recently received an e-mail from Linda Francese of Brookfield, Conn., involving an interesting observation made by her son, which likely involved a sighting of Jupiter. She wrote: “My son, Johnny woke me up at 2 a.m. to look at a 'star' that was moving. His friend had called him and told him about it. Johnny walked over to his house (he lives a house away) and they called another friend to come over. The three of them were watching this 'star' go back and forth. Do you know anything about this?” I'm pretty certain that the “star” that Johnny and his friends saw was Jupiter. So why did it appear to move? Likely they experienced what is called the “autokinetic effect.” This is a phenomenon of human visual perception in which a stationary, small point of light in an otherwise dark or featureless environment appears to move. Many sightings of UFOs have also been attributed to the autokinetic effect's action on stars or planets. Psychologists attribute the perception of movement where there is none to “small, involuntary movements of the eyeball.” The autokinetic effect can also be enhanced by the power of suggestion: If one person reports that a light is moving, others will be more likely to report the same thing. Currently, Jupiter is shining in the constellation Pisces, a star pattern that consists chiefly of faint stars. Under a clear, dark sky with no moon nearby, Jupiter will appear to shine with little or no competition from other nearby stars. If a person stares at Jupiter over a span of perhaps 15 to 30 seconds, it's quite possible for the autokinetic effect to kick in and cause Jupiter to gyrate or perhaps move in a small circle. Next week, when the moon has moved out of Jupiter's vicinity and the surrounding sky is dark, try staring at Jupiter and see if it'll move for you like it did for Johnny and his friends. Kid Cudi’s ‘Man On The Moon 2’ Tops ‘Elle 25’

‘Hyercool’ Cleveland MC’s October LP is what magazine’s editors are most looking forward to by end of 2010. By Jayson Rodriguez Kid Cudi Photo: Jason Kempin/ WireImage Kid Cudi is a wanted man. The Cleveland rapper notched the top spot on “The Elle 25,” a list of things the staff of the fashion magazine is looking forward to before year’s end. In the piece, the mag’s editors rave about Cudi’s upcoming album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, which reportedly will now see the light of day in October . “A sophomore effort that up-stages his first, with booming choruses (Cudi sings — sans Auto-Tune, at that!), raging electro beats, and a rock-rooted single, ‘Erase Me,’ which features that other hypercool skinny-jean-clad rapper, Kanye West,” writes the Elle staff. A new Cudi/Kanye collaboration also leaked online over the weekend, the first offering from a mixtape effort helmed by West. “Wylin’ Cause I’m Young,” is a brooding, bass-heavy number on which the two trade woozy rhymes: “Rage, ’cause I’m paid,” Cudi raps. “Take the grey and create another shade/ Awesome, no more bitches playing possum/ Pop and lock ’em and send them all home.” The track will be featured on ‘Ye and Perajok’s upcoming G.O.O.D. Ass Mixtape (named, of course, for the rapper’s own G.O.O.D. Music label). Another Cudi track, “Mr. Rager,” also hit the Web; a snippet of the song appeared earlier. It’s tentatively slated for a spot Man on the Moon II. “Mr. Rager, Mr. Rager, tell me where you’re going, tell me where you’re heading,” Cudi sings on the slow-thumping chorus. “I’m on my way to heaven/ Mr. Rager, can we tag along?/ Can we take this journey?” What are your expectations for Kid Cudi’s new album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Kid Cudi

‘I Was Scared to Sleep’: LGBT Youth Face Violence Behind Bars | The Nation

Over the phone, Krystal has a calm and lilting Southern accent. She identifies as a woman now, but when she entered Louisiana's juvenile justice system at 12 years of age, she presented herself as a boy and used male pronouns. Today, she's 18 and was just recently released from the system. Being closeted about her gender identity was never an option for her. “It's very obvious with me because of how I walk, talk, the way I do things,” she says. And while her sentencing judge had told her that she wouldn't be in prison for long, it was five years before a sympathetic counselor made a formal request for her release. In her letter to the judge, the counselor mentioned in passing that Krystal had confided in her that she was probably transgender, and that she was in a romantic relationship with another boy at the facility. On the voicemail he left in response to the counselor's report, the judge openly laughed and called the recommendation a joke. He said that based on those facts, he would absolutely deny the request for a release hearing. “Many judges in rural Louisiana still conflate sex offenses with sexual orientation and gender identity,” says Wesley Ware of the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana. It was months before Krystal was finally set free. added by: toyotabedzrock

‘Doomsday Ark’ to be Housed on the Moon

If the human species should be destroyed on Earth, our future may reside on the Moon if plans.being drawn up for a “Doomsday ark” on the moon by the European Space Agency are carried through. The Ark will contain the essentials of life and human civilization, to be activated in the event of earth being devastated by a giant asteroid or nuclear war. The construction of a lunar information bank, discussed at a conference in Strasbourg last month, would provide survivors on Earth with a remote-access toolkit to rebuild the human race. A basic version of the ark would contain hard discs holding information such as DNA sequences and instructions for metal smelting or planting crops. It would be buried in a vault just under the lunar surface and transmitters would send the data to heavily protected receivers on earth. if no receivers survived, the ark would continue transmitting the information until new ones could be built. The vault could later be extended to include natural material including microbes, animal embryos and plant seeds and even cultural relics such as surplus items from museum stores. As a first step to discovering whether living organisms could survive, European Space Agency scientists are hoping to experiment with growing tulips on the moon within the next decade. The first flowers – tulips or arabidopsis, a plant widely used in research – could be grown in 2012 or 2015 according to Bernard Foing, chief scientist at the agency’s research department. Tulips are ideal because they can be frozen, transported long distances and grown with little nourishment. Combined with algae, an enclosed artificial atmosphere and chemically enhanced lunar soil, they could form the basis of an ecosystem. The first experiments would be carried out in transparent biospheres containing a mix of gases to mimic the earth’s atmosphere. Carbon dioxide given off by the decomposing plants would be mopped up by the algae, which would generate oxygen through photosynthesis. The databank would initially be run by robots and linked to earth by radio transmissions. Scientists hope to put a manned station on the moon before the end of the century. The databank would need to be buried under rock to protect it from the extreme temperatures, radiation and vacuum on the moon. It would be run partly on solar power. The scientists envisage placing the first experimental databank on the moon no later than 2020 and it could have a lifespan of 30 years. The full archive would be launched by 2035. The information would be held in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish and would be linked by transmitter to 4,000 “Earth repositories” that would provide shelter, food, a water supply for survivors http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2010/07/doomsday-ark-to-be-housed-on-the-mo… added by: pjacobs51
