MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. NOW Southern California — this just in – Los Angeles Times Man killed by Long Beach police was holding water nozzle, not gun December 13, 2010 | 3:07 pm The 35-year-old Long Beach man killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday was holding a water spigot, not a gun, Long Beach Police officials said Monday. Two Long Beach police officers responded to a 911 call at 4:40 p.m. Sunday from a neighbor reporting an intoxicated man holding a “six shooter” that looked like an antique gun in the 5300 block of East Ocean Avenue. “The officers had a position of cover and were observing the suspect while other officers were en route,” said Sgt. Dina Zapalski, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department. Zapalski said Douglas Zerby was in a seated position when he extended his arms while holding the gun-like object and pointed it at an officer. The investigation revealed that Zerby was actually holding a black pistol-grip water nozzle with a metal tip, she said. He was shot in the torso with a shotgun and handgun, then handcuffed, Zapalski said. He died at the scene. Zerby's older sister, Eden Marie Biele, said she was “mortified” upon hearing of her brother's death. “Our brother was killed for no reason,” she said. “We're outraged. You can't get drunk in the city of Long Beach and not get shot? You're trying to do the responsible thing and not drive and you get shot? Is that standard protocol? They didn't wait for backup, they just shot him.” Zerby had been waiting on the stoop for his friend to come home. He often frequented the building after he had been drinking and was known among the neighbors, his sister said. It was a new neighbor who was not familiar with her brother who made the 911 call, she said. The family will be holding a vigil at the scene of the shooting at 5:30 p.m. Monday. For eons, powerful tides have raged through Puget Sound, ripping along at 11 feet per second at their peak, predictable as the phases of the moon. To establish a place in the emerging marine renewable market, the time for investment is now. – Monty Worthington, Ocean Renewable Power Co.Three years from now, a local utility hopes to begin converting a portion of that raw energy to electricity, part of a growing effort to harness the tides to power homes and businesses miles from the smell of salt air. The Snohomish County Public Utility District's pilot project is small – two turbines with 500 kilowatts of total capacity and an average output of 50 kilowatts – hardly a panacea for all that ails the United States' energy portfolio. But tidal power is garnering increasing attention as a niche supplier of renewable alternative energy in Washington, Maine and Alaska. The tides, some say, have the potential to light five percent of the nation's homes – nearly nine gigawatts of generating power. And with wind and solar increasingly seen as viable commercial energy alternatives in the United States, investors and public utilities also seem more willing to literally test tidal energy's waters. “There is a realization that a diversified suite of renewable energy resources will displace fossil fuel,” said Monty Worthington, who is directing a tidal energy project in Alaska for the Maine-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. “To establish a place in the emerging marine renewable market, the time for [U.S.] investment is now.” To that end, earlier this fall, the Snohomish County utility, which serves 320,000 customers north of Seattle, won a Department of Energy grant covering half the costs of its $20 million tidal energy pilot project. Two 30-foot tall turbines will operate 200 feet beneath the surface in the narrow tidal passage of Admiralty Inlet, between the Olympic Peninsula and Whidbey Island, Wash. When fully developed, the Puget Sound project could power tens of thousands of homes, the utility says. Hedge against carbon taxes Tidal power remains a nascent technology, still very much being developed. But for the Snohomish public utility district, it offers several advantages over relatively more advanced renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, said Craig Collar, the utility's senior energy resource development manager. “Solar is not yet economically competitive in the Northwest,” he said. “And given wind's transmission and integration challenges, we would prefer to add more predictable – and potentially more local – resources such as tidal and geothermal.” Climate change and energy security concerns are tidal energy's primary drivers, Collar said. A desire to hedge against possible future carbon taxes makes it even more attractive. The Puget Sound initiative is the first to be launched by a public utility in the Pacific Northwest. Tidal energy has made headway in recent years in Europe and Canada, and it is attracting growing interest inside the United States. Ocean Renewable Power is testing a turbine in Maine and has plans for a project in Alaska's Cook Inlet, which boasts the second-highest tidal range in the world. Technology hurdles remain a huge issue. Solar and wind have seen considerable advancement in technology the past decade. But tidal energy – at least in the United States – has arguably been taken seriously only in the last five years. Some scientists question whether soil is necessary for space agriculture Science fiction lovers aren't the only ones captivated by the possibility of colonizing another planet. Scientists are engaging in numerous research projects that focus on determining how habitable other planets are for life. Mars, for example, is revealing more and more evidence that it probably once had liquid water on its surface, and could one day become a home away from home for humans. “The spur of colonizing new lands is intrinsic in man,” said Giacomo Certini, a researcher at the Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Science at the University of Florence, Italy. “Hence expanding our horizon to other worlds must not be judged strange at all. Moving people and producing food there could be necessary in the future.” Humans traveling to Mars, to visit or to colonize, will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything they need with them on a spaceship. This means farming their own food on another planet that has a very different ecosystem than Earth's. Certini and his colleague Riccardo Scalenghe from the University of Palermo, Italy, recently published a study in Planetary and Space Science that makes some encouraging claims. ‘You’re going to get quite the show,’ she tells MTV News of performing a ‘Burlesque’ number at Sunday’s show. By Kara Warner Christina Aguilera Photo: MTV News The American Music Awards are known for their high-octane performances , and this year is no exception, with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Kid Rock, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Pink, Usher, Ne-Yo, Diddy and more set to hit the stage. Christina Aguilera will also be performing, doing a number from her upcoming movie “Burlesque.” When MTV News caught up with the Grammy winner/ movie newbie recently, while doing press with her hunky “Burlesque” co-star Cam Gigandet, we asked her what fans can expect from her AMA performance. “It’s going to be fantastic,” she said. “And it will give you a fitting little look inside the movie.” Aguilera said her saucy, burlesque-style dancing will set her performance apart from past appearances. “It will be another very new challenge for me,” Aguilera admitted. “My legs have been incredibly sore as I stepped into the role of Ali for this.” In the film, Aguilera plays a small-town girl with big dreams — Ali — who stumbles on a burlesque club owned by the feisty Tess (Cher). Aguilera added that, while re-learning the dance routines was grueling, the choreography is amazing. “You’re going to get quite the show,” she promised. “Quite the spectacle.” While Aguilera is new to the world of acting, Cher told MTV News that the pop star can dish it out with the best of them. “The scenes that she and I had together, I really enjoyed, and I really believe that she’s got definite chops,” she said. “We worked well together. No, not that food coma from too much turkey — the parade of megastar albums that drops the week of Thanksgiving. While the past two weeks have already seen the release of a number of potential blockbusters, from Taylor Swift’s instant-platinum Speak Now to new albums from Susan Boyle, Kid Rock, Rihanna, Josh Groban and Rascal Flatts, Monday’s bumper crop could help pump some life into the holiday season. After Kanye West decided to stake out the off-cycle Monday as the release date for his eagerly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, his competitors fell in line to take advantage of the holiday-week sales rush, with Nicki Minaj, My Chemical Romance and Ke$ha pushing their release dates up one day as well. “I think Kanye will do great,” said Carl Mello, director of purchasing for the 28-store Newbury Comics chain, one of the few remaining non-big-box music retailers in the nation. “He did himself a lot of favors putting up so many tracks during the year and engaging with the audience.” Between the string of G.O.O.D. Friday releases and his headline-grabbing “Runaway” mini-movie , Mello said Kanye set the album up by whetting his audience’s appetite for months on end. As for Nicki’s Pink Friday, even though she spent the year building up cred with a series of features and her own hit “Your Love,” Mello predicted she’d do “fine” but wasn’t expecting her to put up Kanye numbers. “It’s nice to have a female rapper who is credible and has a chance at being quite popular,” he said. The bigger challenge might come for My Chem, whose Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys has gotten good buzz thanks to the speedy single “Na Na Na,” but they have been out of stores since 2006’s The Black Parade, which divided some fans. “There’s almost nothing harder to sell than something that reacted well with 13- to 14-year-olds a few years ago, but who don’t necessarily make the journey with the band over the years,” he said, noting the dive in popularity of similar bands such as Fall Out Boy and Good Charlotte. And though first-week sales of Rihanna’s Loud are not expected to be blockbuster, Mello also said he expects that album and Kid Rock’s Born Free to be solid sellers through the end of the year, along with Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, as well as Swift and previously released discs by Eminem and Lil Wayne. Billboard magazine Senior Chart Manager and analyst Keith Caulfield agrees that West will probably have the biggest sales week, but said Ne-Yo could also have a solid bow with Libra Scale after months of working singles to radio. While he thinks Nicki could have a good week, Caulfield was cautious about Ke$ha’s Cannibal. “She could also do well, but because she’s so track-oriented, it’s hard to say,” he said. “The best comparison for Nicki would seem to be Missy Elliott at her height with Under Construction, which sold 259,000 in its first week, and that’s when people bought a lot of records. It’s hard to gauge how an artist who, up until this point, has been very track-oriented but has an established record for a long time before releasing a proper album will do.” He pointed to fellow Young Money rapper Drake, who built his career up for nearly a year with a popular mixtape and features before releasing a full-length debut. “She’s very different. She’s colorful and versatile, but it’s hard to pinpoint how that will translate into sales,” he said, noting that “Your Love” has sold a very respectable 700,000 downloads to date. Also in the mix are greatest-hits releases from Jay-Z and Pink; Lloyd Banks’ H.F.M.2 ; the reissue of Nine Inch Nails’ debut, Pretty Hate Machine ; a Jimi Hendrix box set that Mello said is doing very well at his stores; Bruce Springsteen’s The Promise archival set; the “Burlesque” soundtrack; and next Friday, a Target exclusive acoustic set from Justin Bieber. And the hits will keep coming through the holidays, with a Christmas-themed “Glee” soundtrack on November 30 — which will also bring the latest from the Black Eyed Peas, The Beginning — followed the next week by T.I.’s No Mercy. December 14 brings the last potential blockbuster of 2010, the first posthumous album of Michael Jackson material, Michael, as well as the major-label debut of “American Idol” season-nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox, Farmer’s Daughter ; R. All of these companies paid their CEO millions while they refuse health care to children. INDIANAPOLIS — Several health insurers say they will stop selling new child-only individual insurance policies as they face a health care reform provision that will prevent them from excluding children with potentially costly pre-existing conditions. An insurance industry representative said the decision affects a relatively small population and is being made to keep costs down for all policyholders. But a Georgetown University researcher said some middle-class children could be left vulnerable by the ensuing lack of coverage options. Several provisions of the health care overhaul went into effect Thursday, six months after it was signed into law. One of those could help parents who have struggled to find coverage for children with expensive medical conditions. Under the provision, insurers will not be able to exclude children from coverage because of a pre-existing health condition. This means they will no longer be able to deny coverage or agree to cover the child except for services related to certain conditions. However WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc., Aetna Inc., Cigna Corp. and Humana Inc. — the five largest publicly traded health insurers based on enrollment — all have said recently they will stop selling child-only individual policies, although those children can still get coverage through a family plan in the individual market. Prepare for the Super Harvest Moon! For the first time in two decades, the Sun will sink as the full Moon rises exactly opposite to it on the day the summer ends, creating in a strange 360-degree twilight show. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, today is the autumnal equinox and a Super Harvest Moon will cross the sky after almost 20 years since the last time it happened. When the Sun starts to set on the Western horizon, a full moon will rise opposite to it on the East, reflecting the light of our home star. Being close to the horizon, the orange Moon will be gigantic thanks to a psychological effect called the Moon illusion. The sky will be illuminated by the Sun and the Moon at the same time, creating a weird 360-degree effect that is rarely seen. You don't need to do anything special to enjoy the show, just get ready for the sunset. Make sure to have a clear view to both East and West. In NYC, the event will happen at 6:54pm.
