James Franco, Asked About Gay Roles, Says ‘Maybe I’m Just Gay’

‘There are lots of reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to have sex with guys,’ actor says. By Gil Kaufman James Franco Photo: Getty Images They’re the two questions actor James Franco hears almost every time he sits down for an interview: “Are you gay?” and “are you stoned?” The multi-hyphenate, perpetually heavy-lidded actor (who, for the record, denies that he’s a smoker) has aroused curiosity about his sexuality by playing a number of high-profile gay parts in movies such as “Milk,” “Howl” and his upcoming “The Broken Tower.” Franco, who has been in a relationship with actress Ahna O’Reilly for more than five years, has avoided the definitive denial/confirmation that other high-profile celebrities have made in the past when questioned about their sexual preferences. In a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story, though, he tackled the issue head-on and provided, well, clarity of a sort. “It’s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,” Franco said. “It’s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ‘Is he straight or is he gay?’ Or, ‘This is your third gay movie — come out already!’ And all based on gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.” The “127 Hours” star has spurred further talk about his bedroom politics with news that he’s planning to write the screenplay and direct a biopic about gay “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Sal Mineo. “There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,” he said about why he chooses the roles he does and why gay parts are often much meatier than other ones he’s offered. “I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ’50s, and one being in the ’20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition.” But, ever the provocateur, the sometime “General Hospital” guest star, painter, author and Ph.D. student ended the interview with another explanation for why he might be choosing all these homosexual roles. “You know what, maybe I’m just gay.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Britney Spears’ New Single Is A ‘Surefire Hit,’ Perez Hilton Says

Ryan Seacrest, who has heard the final cut of ‘Hold It Against Me,’ also gives the tune his seal of approval. By Jocelyn Vena Perez Hilton Photo: Frazer Harrison/ WireImage The demo for Britney Spears’ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” that hit the Web on Thursday is catching people’s attention, and it seems clear that the pop star wants everyone to hit the dance floor and party. The unfinished track, which feature the vocals of songwriter Bonnie McKee rather than Brit herself, is a dirty, grinding club banger with pulsing beats and lustful lyrics. The track already has the media talking. “With her vocals on that it’s going to be an undeniable, surefire hit,” Perez Hilton told MTV News . “I loved it. My own critique is that the demo sounds a little too much like Ke$ha. I hope that the finished song feels like a Britney song. Beside that it’s still to me a hit song.” Perez’s Ke$ha comparison likely can be attributed to the work of Dr. Luke. And the gossip guru’s further evaluation of the tune draws parallels to another Luke production. “It’s not inspired. It’s not groundbreaking,” Perez explains, noting that this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering he’s only heard the demo. “It’s like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’; I think this is the equivalent.” Perez isn’t the only one giving “Hold It Against Me” his seal of approval. Ryan Seacrest revealed that Britney’s managers, Larry Rudolf and Adam Leber, played him the finished version of the track , and he insisted that if fans are stoked about the demo, then they should just be over the moon about the final cut. “@BritneySpears just sent me ‘Hold It Against Me.’ WOW. The demo doesn’t even compare!” he wrote on Twitter . Seacrest added that Britney’s video for the tune is set to shoot in two weeks, after a month of rehearsals, noting that it’s “gonna be major.” He also reported that Rudolf and Leber played him another track off the singer’s March release, “I I I Wanna Go,” but gave little details about the song besides describing it as a “powerhouse single.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Britney Spears Related Artists Britney Spears

Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon And More 2011 Movie Pairs

Brad Pitt & Jonah Hill and Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz also will team up onscreen this year. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Photo: Disney As frigid temperatures and frozen banks of filthy snow have taken hold outside the MTV News offices in Times Square, we’ve been warming ourselves with thoughts of what’s to come at the multiplex in 2011, where heavy doses of buttered popcorn and Sno-caps will keep us content all year round. In the months to come, we’ll take in a series of films featuring highly anticipated twosomes, some romantic and others platonic, some heavy on explosive laughs, and others featuring heavy explosions. Here are our picks for the big-screen pairings we’re most looking forward to checking out this year: Robert Pattinson & Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Sure, RPattz will once again share the screen opposite Kristen Stewart in 2011, but he’s been mining the same limited “Twilight” material for a while now, and we’re keen to see how he manages when his character has more emotional motivation than simply protecting his beloved. While we enjoyed his turn in last year’s romantic drama “Remember Me,” a performance opposite the Oscar-winning Witherspoon in “Elephants” will mark Pattinson’s biggest opportunity yet to establish himself as a formidable talent. The first trailer mostly showcased RPattz in smoldering default mode . Can the 24-year-old Brit step it up? Can his chemistry with Witherspoon begin to compare, in fan’s eyes, with the Bella-Edward-Jacob love triangle? Answers will arrive with the film’s release in April. Brad Pitt & Jonah Hill in “Moneyball” At first glance, we’ll admit, this seems like an odd match. But consider: Hill is just beginning to scratch the surface of his acting range, as his deeply strange and strangely affecting turn in “Cyrus” made clear. Pitt, meanwhile, is a proven comedic talent. The two play fast-talking, ego-heavy execs for the Oakland A’s. With a dramatic, real-life story line about the hard-scrabble, small-market ball club and a script that got a makeover from dialogue whiz Aaron Sorkin, “Moneyball” has the perfect framework for a memorable dynamic between Pitt and Hill. Shia LaBeouf & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” One can hardly call what LaBeouf and Megan Fox shared onscreen in two “Transformers” flicks “magical,” so LaBeouf and Huntington-Whiteley’s pairing in “Dark of the Moon” won’t be a case of recapturing cinematic gold. Yet the comparisons will be inevitable, even if Michael Bay’s directing for his leading “Transformers” ladies seems to begin and end with, “Look hot!” We look forward to seeing how LaBeouf and Huntington-Whiteley play off each other, one a savvy vet of Spielberg and Stone movies, the other a Victoria’s Secret model making her big-screen debut. Johnny Depp & Penelope Cruz in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” Jack Sparrow’s adventures on the high seas have usually taken precedence over his adventures in the bedroom. “On Stranger Tides” could well change all that. With Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley out of the picture, the head-butting between Depp’s Captain Jack and Cruz’s swashbuckling beauty will take center stage. Are we ready to see the softer side of the dreadlocked pirate? Simon Pegg & Nick Frost in “Paul” Has it really been almost four years since these comedic pals were onscreen together in “Hot Fuzz”? Any time the British funnymen get together, we’ll be first in line for a ticket. This year will bring them back for a third cinematic turn, following “Fuzz” and 2004’s “Shaun of the Dead.” “Paul” is a sci-fi comedy in which Pegg and Frost play conspiracy-minded friends on a road trip to a purported alien-landing sight, where — much to their surprise — they actually discover an alien. Frost and Pegg excel when challenging themselves with such high-concept comedic obstacles, and if the film’s trailers are any indication, they’ve got another winner on their hands. Daniel Craig & Rooney Mara in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” The role of troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander was one of the most coveted in Hollywood last year until Mara, a relative unknown, won the part. She’ll star opposite Craig, who plays journalist (and Salander’s love interest) Mikael Blomkvist. The “Tattoo” stars have a lot to live up to: The book on which the film is based was a best-seller across the globe, and the Swedish adaptation has garnered plaudits from critics and audiences alike. But we’ve got high hopes: David Fincher is in the director’s chair, and the story line sizzles with emotional stakes and high-tension plot twists. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry React To ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal

Ellen DeGeneres, Pink and more celebrate historic Senate vote on Twitter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Members of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network join Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV VMAs Photo: Getty Images The armed forces’ controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy will soon be history. On Saturday (December 18), the Senate voted to repeal the 17-year-old measure that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the military. The bill passed by a 65-31 margin, according to CNN , which included eight republicans and one independent who joined the Democrat-backed initiative. President Obama will sign the bill into law next week. “Today, the Senate has taken an historic step toward ending a policy that undermines our national security while violating the very ideals that our brave men and women in uniform risk their lives to defend. By ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love,” the president said in a statement . Calls to dismantle the policy ramped up this year with stars such as Lady Gaga decrying the measure and demonstrations cropping up around the nation. On Wednesday, the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who had been crusading to end the policy, tweeted to Gaga after the vote, “We did it! #DADT is a thing of the past.” Gaga, who arrived at the 2010 MTV VMAs with openly gay service members who had been discharged or left the military due to the policy, made viral videos and spoke at a September rally calling for the end of DADT, tweeted about her emotional reaction to the vote. “Can’t hold back the tears+pride. We did it!i Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS,” she wrote . Openly gay talk-show queen Ellen DeGeneres tweeted , “Thank you Senators for pushing us one step closer towards full equality.” Katy Perry showed her support for the repeal of DADT by responding to a missive that fellow songstress Pink retweeted. “SUPPORTING ALL OUR TROOPS!” Perry added to Pink’s retweet, “RT @Pink: Congrats 2 US!!! REPEAL of DADT & 17 years of allowing Human Rights Violations. There’s hope after all!” Former army lieutenant and gay-rights activist Dan Choi, who has called for an end to the policy since he was discharged from service after publicly coming out in 2009, also gave his take on the vote. “Thank you, Democrats, for your leadership,” he tweeted . “There: I said it. Also, thank you 8 Republicans. You’re on the right side of history.” MTV News also caught up with student Bridget Todd , who once questioned President Obama about DADT during the commander-in-chief’s “A Conversation with President Obama” forum in October. Although Todd said she was skeptical of the president’s commitment to ending the policy after the Obama administration asked for stay blocking a judge’s ruling that the measure is unconstitutional, she said the Senate vote has restored some of her faith in the U.S. leader. “I think it’s fantastic. I’m over the moon about it,” Todd said. “It’s sort of strange that it’s 2010 and we’re dealing with this so I’m happy that it’s done, I’m happy that it’s gonna be over with. “I think I said that he displayed an alleged commitment to gay equality,” she continued. “I think that this sort of proves that perhaps he is actually committed to these issues. They’re not just sort of political talking points that you use to get elected — that this is something that he is willing to make happen.” What do you think about the Senate voting to repeal DADT?
