Optimism & The Art Of Facing Your Fears

Continued here:

Last night, as I was getting ready for bed, I happened to stumble upon the most recent Time Magazine, which features a cover article about whether or not optimism is a genetic trait. After flipping through the magazine, I was struck by The Optimism Bias and how much people tend to not think about the genetic value of their thoughts. I’ve always been a glass-half-full type of person. Even as a child, I remember being described by adjectives such as “sunny” or “bubbly,” something that I feel has followed me throughout my life as a model of what I aspire to be: free of doubt and full of dreams. However, despite these reminders, I had never realized that the strong hope and open-mindedness I possessed for life might be part of my core being. In my continual thoughts on this topic on the train and subsequent subway ride over here, I looked around at my fellow passengers and saw many grim expressions among the crowd. It might be because it was early in the morning (completely understandable!), but there did not seem to be an air of optimism about the day in the sea of faces, despite the new beginning that happened with the sun rising. While there are definitely factors such as stress and the time of day that contributed to my observations, I still could not help thinking that a bit of laughter or smiles might have improved the moods of the passengers, thus adding an air of friendliness to the morning commute. While friendliness and optimism do not necessarily correlate, the art of smiling and expressing upbeat emotions can definitely contribute to one’s self-esteem and internal optimism. I recently spent a few short months in Europe and noticed a more open air of communication that seemed to point toward a culture more focused on sharing their internal selves, which may or may not be predisposed to “rose-colored glasses.” Part of the reason I have been examining optimism in the world around me and in my own life is because of the Time Magazine article, as well as a review of an upcoming book called My Year With Eleanor which explores some of the same ideas, but with a twist. The author of this memoir, Noelle Hancock, was stuck in a rut in her late 20′s when she came upon a quote by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in a coffee shop which said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” A lightbulb went off in her head at that moment and Noelle from then on was on a mission to add one thing that she was scared to do to every subsequent day, including public speaking and even swimming with sharks. This inspired the optimistic, glass-half-full part of me because even in her late 20′s, when most of us have formed a set identity, she chose to make significant changes to who she had become. The idea that life is a canvas, something that can be constantly added to and tweaked is an interesting way to look at the path that one is on, since it can be constantly rerouted and in transition. Optimism is important to note from this upcoming memoir because while Noelle might just have forward-thinking in her blood, there was also a sense that she took charge of her life because she knew in her heart that she had more courage than was normally displayed. Through looking at her life as an open-book, full of numerous possibilities, she found the optimism that comes with securing one’s future in hopes and dreams in a healthy way, which is definitely inspiring for every day life! 5 Ways To Make Life Transitions Easier While thinking about optimism, it’s important to be reminded that life may throw hurdles at you and there will always be challenges, but by thinking of life as continually changing an evolving, there is always a bright side that you’re yet to explore! Thinking back to The Optimism Bias and Noelle Hancock’s upcoming memoir (look for it starting June 7th!), you might have a genetic “bias” toward the sunny side of life, but as well, you might just have to dig deeper into yourself to discover the inner quotes that define the way you live your life. As with the yin and yang, with the good comes the bad – with the difficulties comes the inspiration to will yourself with change and optimism. My Bieber experience started back in 2008 when JDB uploaded…

My Bieber experience started back in 2008 when JDB uploaded Chris Brown’s “With You” . I saw it the day it came out, but enough about that! The other night in Sydney was my first Justin Bieber concert seeing as last year’s one was cancelled and om-biebness, it was amazing. DJ Tay James broke it down and Dan Kanter tore it up but Justin Bieber was outstanding. As expected. After the concert, we went and grabbed some confetti and then raced out to where the vans and buses were leaving so we could catch a glimpse of the Biebs but alas, not even the crazy girls standing on the road could see him. We then got into my car, and headed home. We stopped off at a Maccas on the way, about 40 minutes from the city, when one of my friends pulled out her iPhone and checked Twitter. Chris Brown said THEY WERE GOING BOWLING! CRAP!! So we got back in the car and rushed into the city. We didn’t know they were going bowling, or when they were going bowling BUT WE WENT! The first place we got to was an over 18 bowling bar with some little kids and their mum standing outside. The bouncer checked me and my friends ID (and the other two were well underage) and we went inside. Bieber was not there but feeling so guilty for walking into the alley without doing anything, we purchased a game of bowling. We thought that all the alleys would close up at about 12 so at 10 past 12 when Alfredo Flores tweeted they were still bowling, we freaked out and left that place to find the other place! When we got to the other place, we noticed a group of beliebers standing outside, the very same people who we had sat next to a the concert! We waited about 15 minutes in the cold (this is about 12:30am might I add) and then a figure started walking up the corridor inside towards the glass doors. IT WAS FREAKING SCOOTER BRAUN!! I waved and he smiled and gave me thumbs up! That was it, from then on, we were waiting until we saw our JB. About 15 minutes later, we approached the other group and spoke to them. They said they had already had their photo with CHRIS BROWN and that they spoke to Scooter who had told them not to freak out if JB comes out but just to approach him calmly. WOWOWOWOWOW. About 15 minutes later, THE ENTIRE CREW CAME OUT. Chris Brown came out and we snapped a couple with him before he headed off . The other group of beliebers were having their photos taken with JB at this moment so I asked Scooter if we could get a pic as well but he was like, “Well these guys have been waiting here a long time and I told them they could….plus Justin’s got school in the morning,” to which we responded, “but Bec’s also got school in the morning!!” (more like Bec’s got school in 6 hours). Then Kenny (OMB KENNY) was like, “Okay Justin let’s go” and they started walking the other way to which Chris Brown had walked and Scooter whispered to us, “Go around and meet us over there!!” SO WE DID!!!! We then snapped some pictures and waited for them all to leave before we passed out in excitement. Three years of following JB all meant so much more when finally we got to meet him. #NEVERSAYNEVER -Matt See the original post here: My Bieber experience started back in 2008 when JDB uploaded…

‘Water For Elephants’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

From Robert Pattinson’s hairdo to his love scenes with Reese Witherspoon, MTV News has you covered. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Photo: 20th Century Fox The question for Robert Pattinson wasn’t if he would make the leap from “Twilight” vamp to major-studio player but when. The answer came in January 2010, when news broke that the British actor was eyeing a role in Fox’s “Water for Elephants.” Ever since, MTV News has been following anything and everything connected to the film, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel. Now the movie is set to hit theaters and we’re gathering all our coverage into one place for a “Water for Elephants” cheat sheet. Training When word broke of Pattinson’s intention to play a veterinary student named Jacob in “WFE,” Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon was already signed on to play Marlena, a beautiful circus performer who’s married yet falls in love with Jacob when he joins the troupe. Sean Penn was originally eyeing the role of Marlena’s husband, but the part eventually went to another Oscar winner, . With Pattinson’s new part came a new haircut: Goodbye, Edward Cullen’s messy locks , hello Jacob’s cropped do. The first shot of Pattinson in action arrived in June, when a photo of him climbing a train popped up online. More pics followed, including looks at Reese and Rob sharing a smooch . Paparazzi weren’t the only ones paying attention to the production. Fans were everywhere, too. “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” Witherspoon told MTV News in December. “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was just unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” Rehearsal Shortly after our chat with Reese, Fox released the first “Watermfor Elephants” trailer , highlighting the film’s story of a circus-centered love triangle between Jacob, Marlena and Marlena’s cruel husband, August/. That, and Rob’s many smoldering looks . A second trailer debuted in March, showing a darker tone and, perhaps to lighten the mood, Reese and Rob’s kiss. As the film’s release date neared, MTV News announced a live-stream event with Pattinson . The star debuted a new clip from the film and stuck around for a 30-minute chat, touching on everything from cursing on the set of “Breaking Dawn” to an awkward “WFE” love scene with Reese. “The love scene in this, I was doing it when I had a really bad cold,” Pattinson explained . “I’m not generally that awkward doing stuff apart from when I’ve got my belly coming out. But my nose is running all over the place and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” Performance The live chat wouldn’t be our only chance to talk with Rob and the rest of the cast. We met back up with him at a press event a few weeks later. This time around, Pattinson discussed love at first sight (he believes in it) and his preferred circus job (manual labor). “I find it very satisfying. I like stacking boxes and stuff like that,” he said. “And also I looked at all the background guys who were putting up a tent as a part of a scene and they were doing this stuff, like in ‘Dumbo,’ and it looked like something appealing about that, being a part of this team that creates this town in two days, and it’s quite cool. And I like the idea of being the absolute everyman as well.” And, just in case you didn’t get enough of RPattz, MTV News presented a live stream from the “Water for Elephants” red carpet in New York. Turns out, Rob barely made it to the event. “It was a mad rush to get here!” Pattinson said of trying to leave the set of “Breaking Dawn,” which wrapped production hours before the premiere. “I was leaving at, like, one o’clock in the morning. They’re like, ‘C’mon, we need one more shot!’ and you’ve got three people pulling you from either side!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
