Beliebers Download Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ To Tune Of 500K

Singer’s first Believe single sells more than 500,000 copies in its first week. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: Walmart/ Island As expected, Justin Bieber ‘s new single “Boyfriend” has made an impressive debut. After dropping last Monday, the song has sold 520,000 downloads in its first week. The number is particularly meaningful since it places him at #2 in all-time first-week singles sales. Flo Rida’s track “Right Round,” featuring a then up-and-coming Ke$ha, has the Biebs beat, according to Hits Daily Double . Flo’s track sits at #1 with 636,000 units moved. Other big sellers include the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” with 465,000 in downloads (#3), and Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” selling 447,000 (#4). Not only are fans gobbling up the single, but his real-life girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has given the song two thumbs up. “Is it my ring tone? No. I didn’t even know you could make it a ring tone,” Gomez told E! News . “It is a great song.” Bieber is hardly resting on his laurels. The teen star is back in the studio working on Believe. He explained on Twitter that the album, for which “Boyfriend” is the lead single, will go there. “Here making music addressing the past and the rumors, clearing it all up in the music. Im putting it all out there on this album. #BELIEVE,” he tweeted . He also tweeted out silly videos of himself acting goofy on mock-up sets of the “Boyfriend” video, which he shot last week. In one, he stands in front of a green screen of icy land and in another he stands in front of a green screen of a fireplace. Of course, Bieber already shared that there really will be fire and ice in the video. “The concept of this video, I mean it’s not like a steady concept,” he explained to MTV News on the Cali-based set in between shots. “It’s not like ‘Justin follows this girl to this spot.’ No, it’s a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene. “It’s kind of like bouncing back and forth,” he said. “And then there’s scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It’s fun.” Related Artists Justin Bieber Black Eyed Peas Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s 26th Birthday: Her 10 Best MTV Quotes!

As Mother Monster celebrates her birthday, MTV News takes a look back at her most-interesting confessions … so far! By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Universal Listen up, Little Monsters: It’s Mother Monster’s 26th birthday! And in that quarter of a century (plus one year!), Lady Gaga has managed to reinvent the pop wheel with her eccentric persona and pumping, politically charged dance music. Lady Gaga Unveils Elaborate Born This Way Stage

Mother Monster tweets out a sketch of the stage, which takes on a gothic castle theme. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga’s stage design of the “Born This Way” Ball Photo: Lady Gaga/Twitter Lady Gaga is going all out for her Born This Way ball. As promised, on Tuesday (February 7), the singer revealed a sketch of what her forthcoming tour stage will look like. “I’m so excited. The Haus has been working so hard, we can’t wait for you to see it!!” she wrote in the lead-up to the reveal, before adding, “Love you Little Monsters, have the time of your life.” So what should all those Little Monsters expect from the one and only Mother Monster for this trek? It looks like the Born This Way ball will be taking place in an elaborately designed gothic castle that includes intricate details like viewing towers, cross-like carvings and a catwalk that extends right into the audience, bringing Gaga close to her many legions of dedicated fans. The look is a far cry from her Monster Ball tour , which was set in modern-day New York City, complete with a subway car, lighted marquees and, yes, a giant monster that Gaga and her dancers had to defeat in order to attend the oft-teased Monster Ball. This new tour will kick off sometime this year and continue right through 2013. Haus member and BTW producer Fernando Garibay shared with MTV News in December that the show will be reflective of the 2011 album. “This album was the most personal [because of] the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion [and] emotion from her and the team,” he said. “Every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. We’re excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level. “You can imagine what happened on the Monster Ball, so use your imagination,” he said. “That’s what’s going to happen, exaggerated.” What do you think of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way stage? Lady Gaga Announces Born This Way Foundation Launch

Mother Monster’s nonprofit will promote youth empowerment and equality. By John Mitchell Lady Gaga Photo: India Today Group/Getty Images Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation will launch February 29 with a fete at Harvard University, the singer and her mother and co-founder, Cynthia Germanotta, announced in a statement on Thursday (January 19). BTWF was created to promote youth empowerment and equality by encouraging self-confidence and well-being and bringing bullying to an end. Joining the pop star at Sanders Theatre will be her partners in the endeavor: Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, the MacArthur Foundation and the California Endowment. Gaga has long been a staunch supporter of anti-bullying legislation, reportedly meeting with President Obama to discuss the topic in September and visiting the White House in early December to discuss the issue with administration officials. She dedicated her performance of “Hair” at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas to Jamey Rodemeyer , a 14-year-old fan who took his own life after years of anti-gay harassment. And last year, Gaga topped DoSomething.org’s list of the most charitable celebrities, in part for her work on behalf of gay rights causes. “My daughter’s foundation was born out of her passion to create a better world where people are kinder and nicer to one another and are accepted for who they are, regardless of how different they may be,” Germanotta said. “She has experienced many of the struggles that our youth encounter today, and identifies with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Together, we look forward to creating a new movement that will engage and empower youth and accept them as valuable members of our society.” The Mother Monster’s commitment to the gay community was again recognized Thursday (January 19) with a nomination for Outstanding Music Artist at the GLAAD Media Awards .The awards recognize fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community across all media. In December, the diva was recognized with the Hero Award by the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that offers suicide-prevention services to LGBT youth. During her acceptance speech at Trevor Project Live , Gaga touched on her wishes to someday make bullying a hate crime. “I hope that we can acknowledge all together that where this needs to begin is in the schools,” Gaga said. “I want my fans and people all over the world to know that there’s always somebody that’s listening. But I want them to know they’re listening before it gets too late.” Related Videos MTV First: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga To Help Drop New Year’s Ball In Times Square

Mother Monster was named Mayor Bloomberg’s special guest for the annual celebration. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Joe Scarnici/ WireImage Back in May, ahead of the release of her Born This Way album, Lady Gaga described her hometown of New York City as her “husband,” and now, she’s been tapped to help her spouse ring in the New Year in the most traditional of ways: by dropping the ball in Times Square. Yes, according to The New York Post, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has named Gaga as his special guest at the City’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration, where she’ll ceremoniously push a Waterford Crystal button at 11:59 p.m., officially beginning the famed crystal ball’s descent over the raucous Times Square crowd. Shortly after the official announcement was made, Gaga took to her Twitter account to express her excitement, writing “I’m so looking forward to … dropping the Ball with Mayor Bloomberg! What an honor as a New Yorker!” Each year, Bloomberg chooses a guest to drop the ball and help usher in the New Year … though, to date, Gaga is his most, uh, unique pick: previous honorary button-mashers have included Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Muhammad Ali and Rudy Giuliani. Of course, dropping the Times Square Ball — which this year is bedazzled with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles and carries the theme of “Let There Be Friendship” — isn’t Gaga’s only New Year’s Eve gig. She’ll also perform at two NYE celebrations: the 40th annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and, of course, the Japanese program “Kohaku Uta Gassen.” MTV will also be throwing a New Year’s Eve party of its own: “NYE in NYC 2010,” a performance-packed special featuring Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, J. Cole, Jason Der

Lady Gaga Says Next Album Is ‘Beginning To Flourish’

‘I have the name for it,’ Gaga reveals to MTV News, while producer Fernando Garibay says they’re hoping to ‘outdo’ Born This Way. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias and Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga is perhaps the busiest monster of them all. Just six months after dropping her chart-topping Born This Way, the Mother Monster is already hard at work on its follow-up. “I’ve started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place,” she told MTV News at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, where she also talked about her Grammy nods and “Marry the Night” video . “I’m excited to put it out, but it’s not done yet. So I’ll put it out when it’s done.” BTW contributor Fernando Garibay recently stopped by the MTV News offices in Santa Monica, California, and shared the vision he has in mind for Gaga’s next release . “I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now,” the producer said of plans for the album. “I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs. “They’re already incredible songs. But I feel like she’s so young,” he said, adding that the record is in its early stages and that “there’s a lot of room to grow.” While Gaga will hit the road on the Born This Way Tour next year, Garibay said that won’t halt the recording process. “The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms,” he said. “Wherever she’s at, we’ll make it.” However the recording schedule pans out, Garibay knows he and Gaga will continue experimenting with new sounds. “She’s the perfect platform for me to express myself,” he said. “You can do stuff with her that you can’t do with anybody else. It’s amazing.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s next album? Share your ideas in the comments! Related Videos MTV First: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga To Debut ‘Marry The Night’ Video Thursday

Autobiographical clip, shot in various New York City locations, will premiere on E! By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images On Thursday, Lady Gaga will officially “Marry the Night.” The singer announced on Twitter that she’ll premiere her highly anticipated video for the song on E! Directed by Mother Monster herself, it marks the first time she’s ever directed a video completely on her own. Gaga previously directed clips in collaboration with her Haus or former creative director Laurieann Gibson . Shot at various locations in New York City in October, including the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island , Gaga weaves an autobiographical tale in the new clip. At another NYC location, Gaga was spotted rolling around on the roof of a car . In a preview released earlier this month, a “Girl, Interrupted”-type story line was teased. In it, Gaga is rolled on a gurney through a mental ward. She goes on a long monologue about the nature of memory and art: “When I look back on my life, it’s not that I don’t want to see things exactly as they happened, it’s just that I prefer to remember them in an artistic way.” In her Thanksgiving Day TV special last week, Gaga teased another part of the “Marry the Night” video. The clip references films like “Fame,” with Gaga donning leggings and a tube top and practicing a dance routine at a studio. During a trip to India, Gaga opened up a bit about shooting the clip and being a first-time director. “It has been a wonderful experience. I worked alongside director of photography Darius Khondji, who is an absolutely amazing DP, and I worked with Gideon Ponte, who is an incredible art director,” she explained. “So I’m looking forward to sharing this autobiographical video with the world. I’m very excited. It’s my favorite song on the album.” Related Videos Track By Track: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga ‘Doing Prep’ For Tour, Next Album

‘She’s always doing 25,000 things in a row,’ DJ White Shadow tells MTV News of Gaga’s 2012 plans. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Leon Neal/AFP Lady Gaga is hard at work. The Mother Monster is already coming up with ideas for 2012’s Born This Way Tour and even thinking about her next album . When MTV News caught up with pal and musical collaborator DJ White Shadow, he talked about what the Haus has in store for Gaga. “She’s doing prep for the next round of touring, and she’s always doing 25,000 things in a row,” he told MTV News last week when he stopped by to chat about the opening of Gaga’s pop-up holiday shop at Barneys . “But I think the main focus for her after this season is going to be prepping up for the show, touring new songs for the record.” Gaga has hinted that she’d like to get Elton John on this next record, but, right now, anything goes. White Shadow — who has worked with Gaga extensively on Born This Way, including on the tracks “Born This Way” and “Americano” — is ready to drop everything to collaborate with Gaga again. “I want to try and be as close to it as possible, that way I don’t have to wake up at 4 o’clock in the morning and fly to L.A. or wherever or Japan or wherever she’s starting to do stuff,” he explained. “Maybe when the tour starts, she’s working all the time. I send her stuff and she sends stuff. She’s always working on something. It just depends. I know she likes to write when she’s on the road, [so maybe she’ll make a] new album during the tour.” Given the pair’s track record, expect across-the-board sounds on the next project. “The kind of stuff that I send her, some of it is so crazy that I don’t know what you’d call it,” he said. “When I make stuff … I know what’s for her and what’s not for her. Some of it’s structured as songs and some of it is structured as madness, and she goes through it like a gold miner.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s next album? Let us know in the comments below!
