DAVID LEE ROTH’S EGO GOT HIM JOB

David Lee Roth’s ego landed him in Howard Stern’s seat on CBS Radio morning show in 2006: By David Hinckley DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER CBS Radio fantasized about getting Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David or Jon Stewart to replace Howard Stern when he left his ultra-successful terrestrial morning radio show at the end of 2005, says the then-CBS executive in charge of the search. CBS ultimately settled for David Lee Roth, said former CBS exec Rob Barnett, because he was the only viable candidate with an ego large enough to think he could step into Stern’s shoes. “That couldn’t have been your first choice,” Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers said. “Seventy-eighth choice,” said Barnett, who eventually rose to the position of CBS Radio president before he was downsized out of a job.Barnett guested on Stern’s Sirius XM show Tuesday morning. He and Stern both said the drama led to many dead ends and some lingering hard feelings. First of all, said Barnett, the idea of replacing Stern, who was heard in New York on WXRK (92.3 FM) and had one of the most popular syndicated shows in the country, was a “ridiculous impossibility.” “The only name that advertisers would hear and think ‘maybe we’ll put one twentieth of Howard’s dollars on that’…was Jon Stewart.” So he approached then-CBS Radio President Joel Hollander, “and I said, Jon’s not going to host a radio show. But Jon is a producer and a person who develops new talent. Jon developed Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, not radio guys. Stewart is a big name and I wanted him to meet Joel.” Then “two minutes into the meeting,” said Barnett, Hollander asked Stewart to host, and “Jon quickly wrapped up the meeting.” Hollander also contacted Seinfeld, Chris Rock and others, said Barnett, even though “all the money in the world couldn’t get them to do five hours of live radio. They’re already rich.” Hollander also turned down the idea of Opie and Anthony, said Barnett. So it came down to Roth, he said, who was eager to take the job and did a tryout in Boston that Barnett called “amazing.” But when Roth got to Stern’s seat in early 2006, it all went south. He lingered a few months, long enough to go down as one of the major disasters in radio history. “The meltdown came day one or day two,” said Barnett, “when he got in the chair … and wouldn’t listen to anyone that was there to do only one thing….to help him.” Opie and Anthony took over a few months later and eventually were also cashiered when the ratings never approached Stern territory. Many of Stern’s old stations eventually changed formats. K-Rock, which played rock during non-Stern hours, is now a top-40. All this has been resurrected lately as Stern approaches the end of his five-year deal with Sirius XM, in December, and speculation mounts about what he will do next. He has denied he has any plans to return to “free” radio, where he said again on Tuesday that censorship restrictions drove him nuts. He also said he still has “a tremendous amount of animosity” toward Hollander and current CBS CEO Les Moonves. “Joel Hollander, I have no love for the guy,” Stern said. “And Les Moonves treated me horribly. They wished me well. Then a couple of months later they sued me.“ Stern also said that while he liked Roth and wished him well, he knew he would fail when he didn’t seem to grasp the idea that talking to a radio audience is different than talking to the crowd at a rock concert. “He looked at me with a blank stare,” said Stern, “like he wasn’t concerned.” Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/2010/04/21/2010-04-21_david_lee_roths_ego_landed_him_in_howard_sterns_seat_on_cbs_radio_morning_show_i.html#ixzz0m37qAvps

‘Glee’ Recap: New Directions Kids Do Lady Gaga Proud

After dazzling ‘Bad Romance’ and heartbreaking ‘Poker Face,’ Kiss’ ‘Beth’ is also a highlight. By Terri Schwartz The cast of “Glee” on Tuesday Photo: FOX If you were looking for an episode of “Glee” that could top last week’s Joss Whedon-helmed “Dream On,” or rival the grandeur that was “The Power of Madonna,” look no further than Tuesday night’s “Theatricality.” Both written and directed by creator Ryan Murphy, the episode managed to combine Lady Gaga, “Twilight,” Idina Menzel and issues of sexuality in a way that only “Glee” can. The only thing it was missing was an appearance from Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester. The episode opened with Tina and Mr. Schuester in Principal Figgins’ office. He announced that Tina needs to change her goth-y clothing habits because “American teens are coming down with a serious case of “Twilight” fever. Turns out, some Edward Cullen-happy William McKinley students had attacked one of the school’s nerds in an attempt to get Robert Pattinson’s attention. But Tina wasn’t to be dressed in a gray sweatshirt and jeans for long. Once the group discovered that rivals Vocal Adrenaline were working on a Lady Gaga routine , Mr. Schue decided to make that his group’s weekly assignment as well. Rachel, Quinn and Mercedes decided to sneak into a Vocal Adrenaline practice, where Rachel saw Shelby perform a soulful version of Barbra Streisand’s “Funny Girl.” It was enough for her to realize that the rival glee coach is her mother. The two had an awkward conversation, as Shelby realized this reunion wasn’t what she had hoped it would be. Back at New Directions’ practice, Kurt and the girls performed a fabulous rendition of “Bad Romance” that would do Gaga proud. Then the boys covered Kiss’ “Shout It Out Loud.” Doing research on Kiss inspired Puck to come up with a name for his and Quinn’s daughter, so he sang “Beth” for her in front of everyone. That was enough to convince her. But warm hearts weren’t a trend in this episode, and one of the most intense moments came after Burt, Kurt’s father, invited Finn and his mother Carol to move in with them. Finn reached his breaking point about the sudden life change, taking his anger out on Kurt, using a derogatory slur to describe their redesigned home. Burt walked in on them and confronted Finn about using the word. “When you use that word, you’re referring to him,” Burt said, and kicked Finn out of their home. To prove to Kurt that he was different, Finn came to school dressed in a full-fledged Gaga outfit to defend Kurt in the bathroom from the jocks, who had been harassing the glee club about their costumes for the majority of the episode. The rest of the club came to back them up and, though we know there is still a lot to be repaired between Kurt and Finn, it was a good start. Rachel and Shelby didn’t have as happy an ending lined up. The club coach announced that she was Rachel’s mother, “but not your mom.” In a heartbreaking moment, Shelby said they should “just be grateful to each other from afar for a while,” and Rachel asked to sing a duet with her to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams. They sang an almost unrecognizably slow version of Gaga’s “Poker Face,” and the look of despair on Rachel’s face as she sought to hold herself together was enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes. Shelby walked out with the promise that they would see each other again at regionals. As for Tina’s wardrobe change, she threatened the terrified Principal Figgins with the promise that “Asian vampires are the most vicious of all the vampires.” Needless to say, she was back to expressing herself through her clothing by the end of the episode. Man Wrongfully Imprisoned for Decades Happy to Start Relearning Life

Man wrongfully imprisoned for decades happy to start relearning life By Rich Phillips, CNN May 24, 2010 8:43 p.m. EDT Tampa, Florida (CNN) — Meeting 54-year-old James Bain, the one thing that stands out is that the smile never seems to leave his face. He appears happy and positive, and the bitterness that might be buried inside a man who was wrongly sent to prison for 35 years is nowhere to be found. “I kind of see myself as a man of God and being like Joseph,” he said. “In a sense, I feel like a bear, coming out of hibernation. Like, they come out to eat, mine would be coming out to enjoy what I have missed.” Bain has missed a lot. His life was returned to him and his family in December, when a Florida judge freed him after DNA testing proved he did not kidnap and rape a 9-year-old boy in 1974 in Lake Wales, Florida. With the help of the Innocence Project, a national public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA tests, Bain left a Florida courtroom and entered a world he had left a lifetime ago. He is now on the outside, in a world that has changed technologically and socially, and one in which he must now learn how to live — again. “I've been planning on going back to school, and getting ready to take my driving test again, and hoping to get a motorcycle license,” Bain said. In the backyard of his mother's home in Tampa, Florida, Bain said that he'd like to tour the country on his motorcycle. CNN spoke with him amidst grapefruit and orange trees that weren't even planted when he went to prison so many years ago. “You spend 35 years in prison, and just the little things, like a grapefruit tree or an orange tree … those had vanished for me,” he said. “I never thought I'd get a chance to see another one of these.” The past six months have been a whirlwind, and Bain has become a celebrity. He was brought to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Martin Luther King Jr. Association for Nonviolence to ring the Liberty Bell on Martin Luther King day. When it was revealed that his favorite movie was “Titanic,” the owners of the Orlando, Florida, exhibit “Titanic — the Experience” invited him and his family to spend the day at the site, where characters from the movie tell the story of the sunken vessel. Noting the movie symbolized hope and strength for him while in prison, Bain said the film sends chills through his body. “To me, it means love and care for what you feel about other persons, like my sisters and mother. I think about that key word from 'Titanic,' 'Don't ever let go,' ” Bain said. Bain was invited to Orlando by Lowell Lytle, the man who portrays the Titanic's captain, Edward Smith. Lytle was touched by the torment James experienced while wrongly imprisoned. “It just hit me how horrible that must have been. That man's youth was taken away from him,” Lytle said. “I thought, I need to do something to help this man. If I can bring a smile to his face … to be able to take him through this exhibit here, and take him through an experience he will remember forever, that was fun for me.” During the past six months, Bain also has spoken to church groups and organizations. “I try to show whoever I'm speaking to about choices. That's my key word. Choice. Only you can make it because you have to live with it,” he said. “My choice was snatched. … It was taken from me. They didn't leave me no alternative. It's like the old saying, the right place at the wrong time.” But Bain insists that he's not bitter. He said he believes he's returned to a better society — a better country than the one he left in 1974. He points to the fact that an African-American was elected president. “I saw a big difference when the president changed, which I never dreamed would happen,” he said. “To see that change, that goes to show me, now, that there's a lot of good that we've done in this country.” Bain has been living with his mother in Tampa. He's been paid to speak in a couple of places, money that will help tide him over until his big payday. He and his attorneys have filed with the state of Florida for the restitution that Bain is entitled to — $50,000 for every year he spent behind bars, for a total of $1.75 million. That's a lot of money to most of us, but not nearly enough to make up for 35 years, Bain said. “Not even if they gave me $100 million,” he said. “Even if they gave me that, it still wouldn't replace what I lost.” He said it's the money that's keeping him on his guard — and is one reason why he doesn't yet have a girlfriend. “I just don't want no woman to want me for my money, to be honest with you,” he said. “… You don't know what they have planned.” added by: EthicalVegan

Deputy arrest 5 year old boy “to teach him a lesson” while mom observed and approved.

Lehigh Acres, Fla. While pumping gas at a nearby 7 Eleven Gas Station a Floridian woman witnessed a very disturbing site . A Sheriff’s Deputy was arresting a 5 year old boy and the mother was watching and consenting to the act. The woman, who requested to remain anonymous, snapped a picture from her cell phone, started to cry and said “That's not a way to treat a child, that's not a way to teach a lesson to a little boy,” The mother explained how she had requested to her friend and 15-year old veteran of the Lee county Sherriff’s office to help her teach her son a lesson with a scare. The deputy complied and arrested the boy. “I hope it scared him to figure out that he's not going to play with matches or lighters again,” said the mother. “That was the whole point of it — to make him afraid that he was going to go to jail.” The discipline was too much said Child psychiatrist Omar Rieche. “No matter what the details are, when you see that picture, it says so much,” he said. “The age in which this is being done is inappropriate, so it's misguided.” But the boy's mother said she'd do it again if she had to. The actions of the deputy were not protocol explained the Lee County Sheriff's Office. added by: BRAVATRAVELS
