Justin Bieber’s ‘Karate Kid’ Song Is Eligible For An Oscar

‘Never Say Never’ joins tunes by Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera in the running for Original Song category. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Justin Bieber set tweenage hearts aflutter when he teamed with Jaden Smith to record “Never Say Never,” the theme to Smith’s “Karate Kid” reboot. And now, he’s hoping to do the same for Oscar voters. Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the governing body of the Academy Awards — released its list of the 41 songs eligible for the Original Song category at the 83rd annual awards, and Bieber made the cut. “Never Say Never” is in the running against the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Coming Home” and “Me and Tennessee” (both from her upcoming “Country Strong” film) and a trio of songs from Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque.” Though Bieber made the eligibility list, the tune’s nomination is no surefire bet: Movie clips featuring each song will be screened for voting members of the Academy’s Music Branch on January 6, and it will be up to them to select the field of nominees. Nominations will be announced on January 25 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. According to the Academy, in order for a work to be deemed eligible for the Original Song category, it must “consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film,” and “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film, or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Bieber and Smith’s song is played over the end credits of “The Karate Kid.” The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 27. What the Haters Missed in Going the Distance

Every so often, a movie comes into theaters with at least one big target on its back, and then it surprises the naysayers by actually being entertaining and worthwhile. Certainly Titanic couldn’t have had worse buzz, between its scheduling and budget difficulties and the easy jokes that could be made from its title, only to wind up being one of the biggest grossers of all time. Going the Distance (new on DVD from Warner Home Video) is no Titanic , granted, but this charming and funny little movie is nonetheless quite the surprise, all things considered.

Should Susan Boyle Sing at the Royal Wedding?

He’s already a reality show judge and record producer. But Simon Cowell is looking to add another title to his resume: wedding planner. Speaking to Extra , Cowell offered up an idea for who should sing at the royal nuptials between Prince William and Kate Middleton . “Susan Boyle would be perfect,” said the former American Idol panelist, adding that Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” would be the ideal wedding song for the pair. As the world knows by now, William and Kate got engaged last month and have scheduled their exchanging of vows to take place at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. Billions are expected to watch on television. Would Boyle be able to handle that pressure? Do you think she’d made a good choice to sing at the reception? [poll id=”1660″ /]

Anne Hathaway and James Franco to Host Academy Awards?

If Anne Hathaway wears what she donned for a recent EW photo shoot at next year’s Academy Awards, we think the following news is nothing short of exhilarating: According to Deadline Hollywood, Hathaway and James Franco are near-locks to host the 2011 Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has

Michael Moore’s New Job: Oscar Board Member

Deadline Hollywood Daily’s Editor-In-Chief Nikki Finke has declared a Red State Alert over the news that documentary filmmaker and Oscar-winner Michael Moore has just been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors. She writes, Hollywood-hating conservatives are going to have a field day with this (And predictably the L.A. Times’ Patrick Goldstein knee-jerks with this: You could hear the outcry in conservative quarters from a million miles away.) If for no other reason than she saves me from having to spend money on a “Variety” subscription, I love Nikki, but this conservative has no problem whatsoever with Michael Moore being elected to the Academy’s prestigious Board of Governors, because this conservative believes Michael Moore has earned it. Yes, Michael Moore is a liar, a shameless propagandist and an anti-American leftist of the highest order. But he’s also one helluva talented filmmaker and it would be wildly hypocritical for me to believe or argue that anyone should be blacklisted from AMPAS due to their political beliefs. And that’s the only reason I could possibly use to argue against this appointment. In the medium of documentary filmmaking, Michael Moore is one of the very best at what he does, no more or less accomplished than Kathryn Bigelow, who was also elected this year. No more or less accomplished than the other Governors. We Hollywood-hating conservatives are not the ones looking to hold people back based on their political beliefs. If I have an argument with AMPAS it’s not that they should blacklist Michael Moore, it’s why not elect Jerry Bruckheimer, Jon Voight, Michael Moriarty, or Robert Davi to this board? For they are also no more or less accomplished than many of the others. I’m sorry to disappoint those looking for outrage over Michael Moore’s new gig, but we’re not the blacklisters here. I despise everything Moore stands for just as much as the Left surely despises everything Jon Voight stands for. But a blacklist is a blacklist is a blacklist. Big Hollywood will fight Moore in the arena of ideas and expose him as the liar he is any day of the week, and relish it. But my frustration with his agitprop – especially the fact that he’s good at it – isn’t about to turn me into what disgusts me. Crossposted at Big Hollywood .

Is Doris Day the New Betty White?

The organizers behind one Facebook campaign would like to think so, but they’re not stopping at a barnburning guest-host stint on SNL ; they want gold . “Doris Day to be (finally) Honored by the Oscars?” has launched its bid for the 88-year-old legend to collect some honorary hardware at next year’s Academy Awards. Its argument? “As of 2009, Doris Day was the top-ranking female box office star of all time and ranked sixth among the top ten box office performers (male & female). Isn’t it time the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pulled out an HONORARY OSCAR AWARD ?” Well? [ Facebook ]

‘Eclipse’ PG-13 Rating Promises ‘Intense Action,’ ‘Some Sensuality’

Reasons given for rating indicate more action and violence than ‘New Moon’ and ‘Twilight’ movies. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit In an unsurprising development that nonetheless provides titillating insight into what’s to come, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America’s Classification and Ratings Administration, according to a report from BoxOfficeMojo.com . Both “Twilight” and “New Moon” were rated PG-13 as well, but it is the explanation behind their ratings that gives subtle hints as to what “Eclipse” has in store when it hits theaters on June 30. “Eclipse” received a PG-13 rating for “intense sequences of action and violence, and some sensuality.” By contrast, “Twilight” was tagged PG-13 because of “some violence and a scene of sensuality” and “New Moon” nabbed its rating due to “some violence and action.” Was “Twilight” notably more sensual than “New Moon”? According to some folks, so it seems. And what’s the exact distinction between “some sensuality” and “a scene of sensuality”? Does that mean “Eclipse” will have two or more such scenes? That sound you hear? The Twilight-verse uttering a collective, anticipatory shudder. “Eclipse,” no doubt, will feature its Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle front and center, as the first trailer for the film made clear in March: lovers in a flower-covered meadow, Taylor Lautner with his shirt off and so on. But you can also expect a heavy dose of action — “intense sequences of action and violence,” to be exact — as evidenced by the flick’s second trailer : fights, fights and more fights. What else would you expect from director David Slade, who also helmed the vampire horror movie “30 Days of Night”? So that makes it three straight PG-13 movies, and when it comes to the adaptation of “Breaking Dawn,” the final book in the vampire book series, you can expect more of the same. That is, despite a hefty dose of vampire-on-teenager sex and the horror movie-esque birth of a vampire/human baby, “Breaking Dawn” is planned as a PG-13 release. “That’s your audience,” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg said last month. “In this series, you don’t sacrifice anything. There are some movies that wouldn’t play at PG-13, like ‘The Hangover,’ but this is just not one of them for me. Again, if you’re capturing character, emotion and emotional journey, you’re OK.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
