Golden Globes Preview: Kings Vs. Geeks, Charlie Sheen And Sea Bass

Get the inside scoop on the Best Picture horse race, host Ricky Gervais and more before Sunday’s show, which airs live at 8 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Sony Pictures On Sunday evening, Hollywood will gather for the 68th Golden Globe Awards , an annual shindig at which celebs in attendance are at least as interested in re-filling their wine glasses as they are in watching to see who wins. Emceeing the shenanigans once again will be Ricky Gervais , who last year guzzled beer onstage, hilariously eviscerated Mel Gibson and generally won rave reviews for his keep-the-show-rolling comedic talents. Gervais will have a new crop of Hollywood royalty to dis this year. Thus far, the 2011 awards season has been shaping up to be a two-horse race between “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” for top prize. But it’s anybody’s guess which film will triumph at night’s end in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category; even ear-to-the-ground prognosticators are split on the outcome. Other categories are more clear-cut. You can take it to the bank now: David Fincher will nab Best Director for “Social Network,” “The Kids Are All Right” will take home Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Colin Firth will triumph as best dramatic actor for “King’s Speech.” Oh, and if Natalie Portman doesn’t win best dramatic actress for “Black Swan,” it’s a sure sign of the apocalypse. The Globes air live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, and as always, MTV News will be reporting from the red carpet and post-Globe parties, so be sure to check out MTV.com for all of the latest awards-show developments. Also keep an eye out for our interviews with the night’s winners and losers. For added enjoyment, play a game of “Spot the Drunken Celeb.” The 1,300 guests will be sitting around tables, knocking back the booze and, if they’re smart, filling their bellies with food too. On this year’s menu is an appetizer of grilled eggplant and marinated artichoke, topped with a blend of edamame and red pepper hummus. The entr

Marion Cotillard Is Pregnant

Oscar winner is expecting her first child with actor/director boyfriend Guillaume Cane. By Jocelyn Vena Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic “Inception” star Marion Cotillard and her boyfriend of three years, Guillaume Cane, are expecting their first baby. The actress’ rep confirmed the news to multiple celebrity websites; the pregnancy was first reported by Us Weekly. People reports that the baby is expected this spring. Despite being photographed wearing a sparkling ring, a gift from her beau, a source said the couple are not engaged. “They haven’t disclosed any plans concerning marriage,” the source explained. The Oscar winner and Cane, a French actor and director, met when they starred together in “Love Me if You Dare” in 2003. They began dating in 2007. They most recently worked together on Cane’s film “Little White Lies.” In a 2009 interview with The Telegraph, Cotillard made it clear that she wanted to start a family. “You can’t work all your life,” she explained. “I was thinking, of course, about my life, which is a lucky, lucky, lucky life. I have the choice to take a big break and I have to do that. I want to have babies so I must take some time to have babies.” In the same interview, she recalled some advice “Nine” co-star Daniel Day-Lewis gave her. “Take care of my life,” she recalled the actor telling her. ” ‘Don’t work too much.’ He’s right.” Next up, Cotillard will star in Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris,” alongside Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, and Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion.” Cotillard might be making the awards-show rounds this season as “Inception” is up for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes and is getting Oscar buzz. ‘American Idol’ Incorporates Even More Changes

Show plans a sudden-death top 20 and eliminates having equal numbers of men and women. By Gil Kaufman Photo: FOX You could see an all-male or all-female top 12 this year on “American Idol.” And instead of viewers at home whittling down the final 24 contestants over three weeks, this year’s show will featuring a single, 20-singer “sudden-death” round that will determine the season 10 finalists. Those are just a few of the additional tweaks “Idol” producers have in store for the upcoming season of the reality singing competition. When “Idol” returns on January 19, viewers will definitely notice the shake-up, according to Entertainment Weekly . “We’re going ahead with a whole fresh change,” executive producer Ken Warwick told the magazine. “Simply because we never thought in our wildest dreams that any show would last 10 years on American television.” You already knew there was a fresh judging panel anchored by newbies Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and that Interscope Geffen A&M boss Jimmy Iovine will be acting as the in-house mentor. But contrary to earlier reports, contestants will not participate in a video-making challenge after the idea was floated and then abandoned. Another change will also challenge singers who come in with a particular style that they intend to stick with the whole way through. “If you do Motown, then I’m not sure [how] you’re going to sing an R&B song and give it your country flavor,” returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said. “You can’t suddenly go [in a painful country twang] ‘Staaaaap! In the naaeeemeee of loooaahve’ — so it’s not going to be like that. They’ve got to be clever with it.” Replacing the old three-week top 24 round in which viewers whittled down the semi-finalists to a top 12, Lythgoe said the top 60 singers were flown to Las Vegas, where they performed on the same stage as the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show “Love.” After 20 were booted, another trimming round in Hollywood will take their numbers down to 20, at which point viewers will vote in a single sudden-death round that will select the finalists from two groups of 10. But, unlike past seasons in which producers split the boys and girls up into equal groups, the final group — which could number 12 or 10, depending on the talent — will not necessarily be evenly balanced. “If I’ve got six fantastic boys and four average girls, I’m certainly not going to throw out a fantastic boy to put in another average girl, or vice versa,” Warwick said. Other notable changes, according to The Hollywood Reporter , include a “substantial modification” to the set, which will be home to new musical director Ray Chew, formerly of the “Saturday Night Live” band, as well as the return of the “Idol” mansion, where the finalists will live during their run on the show. Iovine has hand-picked major producers such as Rodney Jerkins (Janet Jackson, Britney Spears), Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls), Timbaland (Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado) and Alex Da Kid (Rihanna, Eminem) to help the singers with song selection and provide help with arrangements. In an effort to avoid the loss of headline heat the contestants face when their albums drop later in the year, nearly six months after the show is over, Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair said finalists will start releasing music as the season progresses. “The sands of time are slipping through the hour glass and you want to capitalize while the public is so engaged in the story of winning or losing,” Fair said. “Normally with a new artist, the world isn’t waiting. In ‘American Idol”s case, the public is — they want to hear something great. With a big tail wind like that, you want to set sail.” While many ideas were tossed up against the wall, one that was considered and abandoned was having “Idol” winners face off against former finalists who may have deserved another chance, such as Fantasia taking on Jennifer Hudson or David Cook taking on Adam Lambert. The idea didn’t get very far since few past winners and finalists were keen on it. Justin Bieber’s ‘Karate Kid’ Song Is Eligible For An Oscar

‘Never Say Never’ joins tunes by Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera in the running for Original Song category. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Justin Bieber set tweenage hearts aflutter when he teamed with Jaden Smith to record “Never Say Never,” the theme to Smith’s “Karate Kid” reboot. And now, he’s hoping to do the same for Oscar voters. Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the governing body of the Academy Awards — released its list of the 41 songs eligible for the Original Song category at the 83rd annual awards, and Bieber made the cut. “Never Say Never” is in the running against the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Coming Home” and “Me and Tennessee” (both from her upcoming “Country Strong” film) and a trio of songs from Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque.” Though Bieber made the eligibility list, the tune’s nomination is no surefire bet: Movie clips featuring each song will be screened for voting members of the Academy’s Music Branch on January 6, and it will be up to them to select the field of nominees. Nominations will be announced on January 25 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. According to the Academy, in order for a work to be deemed eligible for the Original Song category, it must “consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film,” and “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film, or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Bieber and Smith’s song is played over the end credits of “The Karate Kid.” The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 27.
