Should Oprah Winfrey Host the Academy Awards?

She’s off the small screen, but might Oprah Winfrey play a role in big screen affairs next year? Motion Picture Academy sources tell The Chicago Sun-Times that the former talk show host is in contention to host the 2012 Academy Awards. The event will be broadcast on ABC, which has a close relationship with Oprah, and a deal could even be finagled that would give OWN exclusive rights to some kind of post-Oscars telecast. Such a deal would be a boon to the struggling network and might be the only reason Oprah would consider the gig. No matter what direction the Oscars choose, it’s a lock the next host will be more entertaining than the last two . Do you think Oprah should host the show?

Could Oprah Winfrey Host the Academy Awards Next Year?

Take this with the comically large grain of salt it most certainly deserves, but: Chicago Sun-Times celebrity journalist Bill Zwecker reports that Oprah Winfrey is at the top of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences list to host the 84th annual Academy Awards in 2012. Winfrey’s hosting duties could possibly come with an OWN -only behind-the-scenes component, in an effort help the ratings-deficient cable network. If this comes true, hopefully Olympia Dukakis winds up in the front row. [ Chicago Sun-Times ]

The Hangover Part 2 Monkey Is Now Addicted to Cigarettes, Todd Phillips Regretfully Reports

Maybe including a monkey in The Hangover Part II was not director Todd Phillips’s finest idea. Earlier this month, the Motion Picture Association of America (rightly) complained about a sequence in which the denim jacketed primate simulates oral sex on Zach Galifianakis and Warner Bros. was forced to pull the the trailer from theaters. And now, officials at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are (rightly) outraged that Crystal, the capuchin monkey who appears in the film, cannot quit cigarettes after being taught to smoke on the Hangover: Part II set in Bangkok.

The Social Network’s Trent Reznor on the Technological Disaster That Occured During The Oscar Noms

After winning the Best Original Soundtrack for The Social Network at this year’s Golden Globes, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were still not convinced that they would be recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — so much so that Reznor, the former Nine Inch Nails frontman, nervously parked himself in front of the television this morning after a sleepless night to watch the nominations himself. Alas, technological disaster struck — an irony, considering that Reznor was being recognized for his work in the most tech-savvy film of the year.
