30 Seconds To Mars’ Next Album Will Be A ‘Dramatic Departure’

Jared Leto says they’ll be ‘bringing the world inside our process’ in an ‘intimate’ broadcast on Friday. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images For most of 2011 — when they weren’t setting Guinness World Records or winning MTV awards — 30 Seconds To Mars repeatedly ducked questions about their future, getting glib when asked about reports that they were calling it quits. Of course, much to the relief of the Echelon, on Tuesday, the band put any and all speculation of a split to rest, announcing that they had begun work on the follow-up to their This Is War album … which sort of raises the question: Was 30 STM just messing with us all along? Well, no. Turns out, they were about as unsure of their future as anyone else, as Jared Leto explained to MTV News. “We weren’t playing coy; we were on the road for two years, four months or so, and people started to ask us about a new album, and we didn’t have any plans. We didn’t know what the future was,” he explained. “We had been working for a really long time. We went from A Beautiful Lie right into the studio, right onto the road, I hadn’t had a significant break in years. So, at that point, I don’t think we knew what was going to happen for the future, so rather than make something up, we just told the truth: We didn’t know.” That uncertainty began to change as soon as the band finally took time to decompress following their record-setting world tour. Leto — who admitted he’s “always writing songs … it’s basically become a habit at this point” — took a glance at his notebooks and realized that he was feeling recharged and excited about the possibilities a new album would present. Though, before the band started work on the new album, they had to make one thing clear: This time around, they’d try very hard to not try very hard. “We made a commitment not to tour for all of 2012 … and I think that helped provide a lot of clarity,” Leto laughed. “And we realized there’s no way this new record could be like [ This Is War, ] because the last record was so conceptual and wrapped around this idea of conflict, because we were battling a corporation and being sued for $30 million. That was our lives, being hunkered down in the studio for a couple years, fighting this conglomerate. Of course, now, different time, different state of mind, so this album is definitely a dramatic departure.” That said, there are still some things 30 STM will keep the same on the new album … namely, incorporating the voices of their worldwide fanbase (they held a series of collaborative recording sessions — so-called “Summits” — during the making of This Is War ) and crisscrossing the globe to find inspiration. In fact, Leto rang in 2012 by making a trek to India, where inspiration was definitely not in short supply. “I was recording in India, and had an amazing experience over there, and came back with some really great material. And not so much that this is a World Beat record, it’s more about the experiences and how they’re influencing me in creative terms, emotional terms,” he explained. “I recorded a tabla player and an Indian folk singer, and I’m hoping I’m able to utilize that on a song. There was one afternoon that we climbed up above a city called Jodhpur, we were on a cliff with a 2,000-year-old fortress behind us. And they call it the blue city; all of the roofs and buildings are painted blue, and when you climb up this mountain you can get a great view of all of it. “So it was about sunset, and I had a portable set up, so we started recording. I had an external speaker, and the kids started to hear this song I was working on,” he continued. “So they started climbing out onto the rooftops of the city, and soon they were scrambling up the side of this mountain, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by dozens of these amazing Indian kids, singing and dancing along to this recording process … it was really mind-blowing.” And on Friday, fans will be able to get a first listen to some of 30 STM’s new material when the band hosts their second It’s a way of welcoming their worldwide fanbase into their laboratory, and Leto is thrilled to pull back the curtain. Because though they may be making a “dramatic departure” on album #4, some things will remain the same. “There are a lot of people around the world who just can’t jump on a plane and be part of a show, and that’s what we provide [with VyRT]. The event on Friday is different, it’s not based around an existing show, it’s a show we created and designed, and it’s going to be a lot of fun for us,” he said. “There will be some music, there will be some mistakes. We’re bringing the world inside our process, it will be intimate. I’m going to play some songs, some old songs, some new songs and then maybe some newer songs I’ve been working on. I’ll play a piece of a song here or there — I doubt I’m going to play an entire song, but you never know. It’s new territory.” Related Videos Buzzworthy Exclusives

‘Game Of Thrones’ Births A Shadow Baby

Things get weird on the latest episode, and MTV’s ‘Watching the Thrones’ is ready to dive into it head-on. By Josh Wigler Shadow Baby on “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO In case you didn’t realize it before, Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” should have made it quite clear: Westeros can be very, very weird. Think about all the various forms of magic cropping up all over the Seven Kingdoms: the crippled Brandon Stark is able to walk again by way of his wolf dreams. North of the Wall, humanoid monsters with voices like crackling ice exist, with the ability to raise their victims from the dead. And across the Narrow Sea, the first dragons to be born in decades are beginning to grow under the love and care of exiled princess Daenerys Targaryen. And now, on top of all of that, we have … a shadow baby?! Needless to say, episode four of the fantasy series’ second season, “Garden of Bones,” was a strange one. Keep reading for our take on the latest trip to Westeros, and watch the video below for more from our weekly “Watching the Thrones” roundup! Hungry Like the Wolf Robb Stark is a hugely important part of “A Clash of Kings,” the novel upon which season two is based. But his physical presence leaves something to be desired — which is to say, he’s rarely seen in the book, mostly talked about. That’s not the case on “Game of Thrones.” Here, Robb is fully present, as seen in the opening moments of “Garden of Bones.” Robb’s direwolf, Grey Wind, grows stronger with every battle, and Robb’s skills as a tactician and leader of men are improving at the same pace. This latest episode also pulled the curtain back on something not seen in the books, but hugely important to Robb’s character: a little trace of love. But that nurse on the battlefield does not go by the name Jeyne Westerling as she does in the books; indeed, as she presents herself, she’s hardly a noble-born woman at all. Is it just an alias for now, a parlor trick that Jeyne is playing? Or has “Thrones” altered Robb’s love interest in a seriously significant way? The Greatest City in the World Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Qarth! At long last, Dany and her khalasar have reached civilization. And if the people of Qarth are to be believed, Dany has arrived at the greatest city in the world. If you’re a bit skeptical of that claim, that’s more than fair. But even if Qarth as a city doesn’t necessarily live up to the hype (and that itself is up for debate), there are things that happen in Qarth that rank high on the list of all-time greatest “Thrones” moments. Needless to say, Dany has some interesting times ahead of her. The Ghost of Harrenhal Poor Arya Stark. It’s just not getting any better for the little girl forced to live as a little boy. Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie found themselves at the mercy of the Tickler and the Mountain in this week’s episode, watching the pair interrogate their prisoners to death with a disturbingly clever combination of a rat, a bucket and a torch. Not pretty stuff. Even the arrival of Tywin Lannister is hardly a mercy; he’s more civilized than their initial captors, sure, but he’s a Lannister all the same. On the bright side, now Arya has a few more names to add to her people-to-kill list alongside Queen Regent Cersei and her wicked son Joffrey. Draining the Poison Speaking of Joffrey, he’s just getting worse and worse with each episode, if you can believe it. From beheading Ned Stark to threatening Sansa’s life with a crossbow held at point-blank range, Joffrey’s wicked ways seem to know no bounds. And that’s not even the worst of it: The way he made the two prostitutes purchased for him by Tyrion torture each other was absolutely sickening to watch. Joffrey is easily one of the most loathsome characters in all of “Ice and Fire” lore, if not the most loathsome — and believe it or not, he’s even more unlikable on the show. Brutal, brutal, brutal. Shadow Baby! While the latest episode of “Thrones” ended the show’s three-week kid-killing streak , it made up for the combo-breaker by having us witness the priestess Melisandre give birth to a shadow baby. A shadow baby. Clearly, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but it’s strange and horrific to behold all the same. If you ever doubted that Melisandre has magic at her disposal, doubt her no longer. Perhaps she hasn’t backed the right horse in the race for the Iron Throne, but she definitely has formidable power on her side, as Davos can attest to firsthand. As for where that shadow baby’s headed next? Readers of the books certainly know — and if you haven’t read the books, well, keep the Kleenex on hand. You’re going to need it. Which ‘Twilight’ Scenes Could Use A Revamp?

As Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart go back for re-shoots, MTV News asks fans what scenes need a makeover. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment In light of the news that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are headed back to the “Breaking Dawn — Part 2” set for a few re-shoots , this week’s Twilight Tuesday posed the question: If you could have any scene in any of the previous films re-shot, which one would you revamp? (Pun intended!) As always, the members of the knowledgeable and passionate “Twilight” fan community responded to the query with gusto. Some folks want to see extended versions of their favorite scenes, some are still displeased with the book-to-film adaptation in certain areas and some requested they re-shoot entire films altogether . But there are two scenes that a majority of fans agreed could use a makeover: the meadow scene in “Twilight” and Edward and Bella’s reunion in “New Moon.” Here’s a sampling of our favorite responses and suggestions: @Cycyn: The meadow scene. It was THE ONE scene they had to capture perfectly (it was Steph’s dream) and it’s really bad. @Cordyq45: Eclipse- Bella getting on Jake’s bike in the school parking lot. Never shoulda happened. @dazzle715: The scene where Bella kisses Jacob in Eclipse, instead she would just push him off the mountain. @pinkpixiechick: Edward and Bella’s reunion in New Moon. Wish it was more like the book version. Too short and passively handled in the film. I’m not a fan of how Melissa Rosenberg writes Edward & Bella scenes. Their reunion in her bedroom (New Moon) felt very rushed. @MeganC79: The meadow scene by far. It’s the most important scene in Twilight and was completely botched in the movie. Huge disappointment. @Brendaof6: The Twilight scene when the “bad” vamps crash the game and Cullens get defensive. Liked at first but now I giggle every time! @Melly1901: Twilight’s meadow scene. Wasn’t how I imagined it. I wish they added the Twi lunch scenes between Ed/Bella too… @KansasCityGypsy: “I know what you are.” “Say it.” “Vampire.” Such bad acting. @Mama_Cougar: Good LORD that heinous “Wolves at the lumbermill” scene from Breaking Dawn. The Eclipse Forest Frolic is a close second. @robownsme: Bella’s speech at the end of Eclipse and her riding away with Jacob on the motorcyle. Both scenes were ridiculous and horrible. @maineemilyhoon: New Moon – the post-Italy scenes. In the book it’s so swoonily romantic…in the movie it’s just dull. What other scenes could use a re-vamp? Married Sunday School Teacher Who Tried To Meet Up With A 14-Year-Old Student For Sex Met One-Time Instead

Sunday School Teacher Who Tried To Meet Up With A 14-Year-Old For Sex Met Police Instead A 21-year-old man from Douglas County is charged with enticing a child for sex — a girl whom he met in his Sunday School class. Brent Turley, 21, who also goes by Pete, lives in Norwood. Investigators say he planned to secretly meet a 14-year-old girl at a Mountain Grove city park. “(He was) wanting to meet on Monday. It was all arranged through text messages,” said Wright County Sheriff Glenn Adler. Adler says Turley intended to take the girl he’d taught in Sunday school “parking,” and then have sex. He met officers instead. “It is saddening that someone would use their position within a church to maybe do this. However, I don’t want that to reflect on the church. Everybody has employees, and you can’t control what the people who work for you do once they leave your office,” said Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase. The only reason law enforcement caught Turley is the 14-year-old girl’s mom took the initiative to look at her daughter’s phone. When she saw suspicious messages, she started asking questions. “Parents have a right to get in their kids’ phone. Get in your kids’ phone: see who they’re texting. We were very fortunate that this mother got into the phone,” said Degase. Investigators say Turley, who is married with a 4-month-old baby, also communicated with the girl on Facebook, where predators find easy access to impressionable youth. “If they’re going to have one, make them produce the password and username to get on there,” said Adler. Law enforcement say Turley also confessed to sex acts with a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from Douglas County. “What I know of it, I think there’s probably going to be some other victims involved in it,” said Adler. Turley is charged with one felony count of enticement of a child. Charges in the other cases are pending. Source More On Bossip!
