‘American Idol’ Recap: Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano Rock Out

Scotty McCreery also goes uptempo as James Durbin slows things all the way down. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” top 9 Photo: FOX There are plenty of ways that “American Idol” is mixing things up and dragging the highest-rated show into the present this season. But after taking a bedazzled trip to the 1970s last week with Elton John, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme on Wednesday night’s (April 6) performance episode was yet another example of why “Idol” is your granny’s favorite show. The search for today’s new star made yet another pit stop in the past, inviting the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am in to mentor the top nine as they dug into rock’s back pages. Some balladeers rocked it out (Pia Toscano, Paul McDonald), while the rockers got mellow (James Durbin, Casey Abrams) and Scotty McCreery proved he’s no one-trick cowboy. Jacob Lusk was up first and he worried about his not-rock background. But Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” was firmly in his warbly gospel sweet spot. Uncomfortable with the song’s blunt lyrics, however, he went with Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” instead, wearing all-white as he wrapped his breathy falsetto around a spare acoustic guitar arrangement. Singing the song as a duet with a female backup singer (the song’s co-writer, Siedah Garrett, in fact), Lusk showed off some newfangled hip thrusts and then unleashed his gospel flavor as he rumbled around the stage. Steven Tyler loved it, Jennifer Lopez said Jacob proved again that believing in yourself is the key and Randy Jackson gave Lusk props for sticking to his moral convictions. After looking for a “Jacob Moment” last week, Randy said those moments were all over Wednesday’s performance. After getting a lot of Janis Joplin comparisons all season, Haley Reinhart picked the oft-sung JJ nugget “Piece of My Heart.” She had the right growl and swagger, and looked the part in leather leggings and flouncy top, but her blues-mama belting came off a little too cheery for the gritty tune. “What you’re showing everybody is that you’re a contender,” Lopez told her. “You’re coming on strong.” Randy said Haley finally brought out the cool, bluesy vibe the judges fell in love with early on and congratulated her for finding her lane. After will.i.am turned the Police song “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” into a beatboxing rumba for Casey Abrams, mentor Jimmy Iovine wasn’t feeling it. Like Jacob, Casey changed his mind, too, and went with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” plucking his upright bass alongside a gently strummed mandolin and keeping the vocals in the non-crazy eyes zone for a second week. It was pleasant, but perhaps a bit vanilla at this point in the competition. Fellow bass player Jackson said Casey did the song justice while singlehandedly making the upright cool. “The whole world’s watching you because you’re not just a singer, you’re a true musician,” Tyler told Abrams. Lopez said Abrams was also right in the pocket playing his bass and said that’s exactly where he belongs. Talk about a perfect fit! Teen Lauren Alaina sought to wed R&B and country on Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Doing a slow walk down the stage and holding the audience in the palm of her hand, the 16-year-old poured more sensuality and feeling into the slow-burn classic tune than, well, someone her age should even be able to. “Four months ago you came in here an immature little girl and tonight you are a natural-born woman,” Tyler gushed. Jennifer wasn’t sure how Lauren would handle the song, but labeled it, simply, “amazing,” and Randy said after choosing one of the toughest songs of the night, Alaina did a solid, “good” job on it. You might have expected rocker James Durbin to go even more over-the-top, so he took it the opposite direction with late Beatle George Harrison’s slinky “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Sitting on a stool and shrouded in shadows, Durbin did, indeed, gently croon the song over a weepy string section, but while slowing things down and saving his rebel yell until the very end showed another side of vocal his personality, it also pointed out that James’ instrument has some obvious flaws. Jennifer liked seeing the other, vulnerable face of James, saying it helped make the rocker aspect of his personality that much stronger and Randy appreciated seeing how the emotion of the song lived in Durbin’s eyes. “Taking chances like that are extremely important,” he said. What would country boy Scotty McCreery do? An Elvis Presley tune, of course. A lifelong Elvis fan, McC chose “That’s Alright Mama,” and the gospel-tinged rockabilly arrangement fit Scotty’s voice to a T. Despite his awkward microphone technique, he worked the stage like a seasoned pro and totally won over the room. It helped that a gaggle of squealing tween girls were let loose on him at song’s end to give him a group hug. “Scotty is in it to win it!” Randy said. “Anybody that thought that you were a one-trick pony, that all you did was the country thing, dude you can perform … this was amazing!” Steven agreed, saying that Scotty made Elvis feel new and fresh again and Jennifer sensed, well, a little bit of hip-hop flavor in the teen’s moves. She’s made a reputation for singing ballads, but Pia Toscano came out of the box for Tina Turner’s high energy “River Deep, Mountain High.” Planting herself confidently center stage, Toscano indeed showed a whole other side of her personality, unleashing the passionate soul diva within. That titanic note at the end didn’t hurt her, either. “Murderer, murderer! You killed it,” Tyler yelled. “There’s a million guys in a million bars out there having a million drinks about you tonight.” Lopez said the “amazing” vocals proved that Toscano can handle the uptempo songs as well and encouraged Pia to keep researching the greats to figure out what else she can do to make her performances special. Stefano Langone needed to knock it out of the park this week after some close elimination calls, and for a sensitive ballad singer, Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” seemed like the right call. Leaning on his crisp falsetto, Langone showed more feeling and emotion than he has in weeks past, stepping out of his cruise-ship zone into a meatier, more personal space. J.Lo was blown away, squeaking, “Baby, baby, baby, I knew you had it in you! That was beautiful!” She felt that extra layer of emotion and said she could tell he was singing it about or for somebody. Randy wasn’t jumping up and down as much, dubbing the first bit of the tune uneven and encouraging Stefano to ease up and save his big punches for the end. After a shock trip to the bottom three last week, Paul McDonald attempted to come back with Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” with Iovine encouraging him to sing it like he was out of his “f—in’ mind!” Unable to stop smiling and be anything but his loveable self, McDonald nonetheless let loose a bit and was more ragged than usual as he furiously strummed his acoustic, stomped his feet and got the crowd clapping along. “I loved it!” Randy shouted, getting an amen from Tyler and Lopez. ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Thia And Naima Boom-Fired

After hours of onstage drama, Elton John week spelled elimination for two more girls. By Jim Cantiello Thia Megia performs on “American Idol” on Thursday Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox It was Elton John week on “American Idol,” which meant the most contemporary song performed was from 1983. The top 11, including a newly saved and shaved Casey Abrams , mostly warbled ballads, making Wednesday night’s two-hour episode feel as “samey” as Elton’s musical output of late. (For an even zippier recap of the week’s “Idol” insanity, hit play on the embedded video below for Jim Cantiello’s “American Idol” in 60 Seconds recap.) Pia lied to America when she promised an uptempo song this week, while Stefano lulled America to sleep with dreams of being held by Tony Danza. Naima confused America with a new dialect, leaving millions of viewers wondering if a stereotypical Jamaican accent done by an African-American is still racist. Then, Jacob was reprimanded for being over-dramatic onstage so he reacted the way any drama queen would: renting a smoke machine and pretending to weep. Sorry seems to be the hardest word, indeed! Scotty sang for his memaw. Thia sang for her brother. But Haley Reinhart sang for her supper, ferociously taking a bite out of “Bennie and the Jets” and spitting it out with a succulent hissssss. Oh, and James Durbin torched a piano. Thursday night’s results show was like a never-ending awkward group number — chock-full of half-rehearsed collaborations that revealed the cliques in the cast. Sorry, Jacob Lusk and li’l country boy Scotty, you aren’t invited to the dorm-room band from hell that is Paul McDonald, James, Casey and Stefano, dwarfed by a normal-size keyboard. Fantasia stopped by to debut her new single, “Collard Greens and Cornbread,” then Jamie Foxx, will.i.am and four thousand Six Flags performers danced around to “Hot Wings.” Ultimately, the meal ticket ended for Thia “Dead Air” Megia and Naima “Boom Fire” Adedapo … continuing “American Idol” ‘s disturbing Lady-Singer Massacre of 2011. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore, Disturbed Reach Final Four Of March Madness

One of these four bands will win the 2011 MMM title; vote now in the Newsroom blog! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way and Gerard Way Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Three weeks ago, 64 bands embarked on the voyage that is MTV’s Musical March Madness . Now, after millions of votes and nearly as many grueling matchups, only four remain. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Paramore and Disturbed each punched their ticket for the Final Four late Thursday night, and one of them will hoist the MMM trophy next week. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! It wasn’t easy for any of them. Much like the Sweet 16, voting in the Elite 8 broke records and went down to the wire. We wouldn’t expect anything less, not when the bands still competing were this big, and the stakes this high. And they’re about to get even higher. Because voting in our Final Four matchups — #9 Disturbed vs. #3 Green Day and #5 Paramore vs. #3 My Chemical Romance — is now under way over on the Newsroom blog, and it’ll be up to you to determine the two bands that’ll go head-to-head for the MMM championship. Final Four voting has begun on the Newsroom blog! While you consider just whom you’ll be voting for — if you haven’t made your mind up already — let’s take a look back at each band’s journey to the Final Four. Disturbed The lowest-seeded band still standing, Disturbed entered MMM as a #9, but quickly served notice that they were a force to be reckoned with, knocking off #8 the Dave Matthews Band in the opening round, then shocking the world by slipping by the Midwest’s top seed, the Foo Fighters , to reach the Sweet 16. Then, they handled Patrick Stump and, perhaps inspired by frontman David Draiman’s now legendary “time to make a statement” speech, took down defending MMM champs Coheed and Cambria in an air-tight battle. With more than 105,000 votes cast, Disturbed outdistanced Coheed by less than 500 to win the Midwest region and earn a spot in the Final Four. Green Day Last year, Green Day were sent packing in the opening round of the tournament, an exit that left them with a bitter taste in their mouths and a sizeble chip on their shoulders. So, in their 2011 march to the Final Four, they took no prisoners, absolutely dominating Adam Lambert in the first round, then going toe-to-toe with a pair of their fellow rock heavyweights — U2 and Blink-182 — and barely breaking a sweat. Their toughest challenge came in the Elite 8 against, ironically enough, Panic! at the Disco, the very band that sent them packing last year. Green Day got revenge , withstanding a late surge from the Panic! guys to take the West region title and head to the Final Four. Paramore Nearly two years ago, we wrote that Paramore were poised “to become the kings and queen of the South.” Little did we know how right we’d be; after a string of impressive victories, Hayley Williams and the guys are, in fact, the rulers of the region, and they’ve certainly earned their crowns. No band faced a stiffer series of matchups throughout the tourney — Paramore drew No Doubt in the opening round and Kings of Leon in the second — and that was before they took on tournament vets Tokio Hotel in the Elite 8. Each time, they rose to the challenge, taking the South region title and, in the process, may very well have become the favorites to win it all. My Chemical Romance It was heartbreak city for MCR last year, as they rode a wave of fervent fan support all the way to the MMM championship game, only to be crushed by Coheed. They’re the only band to climb the mountain once again, and they’ve done it with a frightening level of proficiency. Because, to this point, My Chemical Romance have yet to be really tested, rolling #14 Panda Bear in round one, #11 Rage Against the Machine in round two and #2 Radiohead in the Sweet 16 . They ended 16th-seeded Sum 41’s dream run in the Elite 8 , wrapping up the East title and barely breaking a sweat. In the Final Four, they’ll face off against Paramore, which might very well be the de facto 2011 championship game. MTV’s Musical March Madness has reached the Final Four. All winners are determined by your votes, so, if your favorite act is still standing, it’s up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — and you’d better; the MMM trophy is within reach! Tyra Banks Says Going To Harvard Is ‘Fabulous And Fierce’

Fashion/media mogul talks to MTV News about business classes and writing her novel, ‘Model Land.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Tyra Banks Photo: MTV News Tyra Banks may be a successful media mogul , but that didn’t stop her from registering for classes at Harvard Business School. Turns out, she thought she could learn a thing or two. “I started last summer and I didn’t really talk about it. It was very incognito, my name and everything, but I decided to talk about it [now]. I think it’s a positive thing, especially for girls to see that you can still continue to educate yourself and you can still be fabulous and fierce and celebrate your femininity,” she told MTV News while promoting her new fashion website, TypeF.com. Banks hopes that by putting a face to those fiercely educated young ladies, they’ll also feel empowered. “I think a lot of girls think it’s either/or, even at my age, I feel that it’s never too late to continue your education,” she explained. “I can’t just rely only on my gut. I have to have the knowledge that my professors have in order to take it to the next level.” With her successful reality show, “America’s Next Top Model,” still a hit, and all of that school work on her schedule, Banks is adding one more job to her r

Anne Hathaway Will ‘Go There’ As Catwoman In ‘Dark Knight Rises’

‘Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films,’ a studio source tells MTV News of her casting. By Kara Warner Anne Hathaway Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images Given the overwhelming, worldwide success of “Batman Begins” and, even more so, “The Dark Knight,” any time there’s news about Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises,” it make headlines. Case in point: Wednesday’s (January 19) big announcement from Warner Bros. about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) and the unveiling of Tom Hardy’s role as the formidable, villainous Bane. Regarding Hathaway’s casting, who has been linked to the film via various rumors that started last November, a source at Warner Bros. told MTV News that the “Love & Other Drugs” star is a great choice to play the femme fatale. “She definitely has the [acting] chops,” the studio source said. “She can ‘go there’ with this role. Obviously, Chris [Nolan] sees something in her that’s fantastic that we haven’t seen or have seen … plus Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films.” Hathaway is, after all, an Oscar-nominated actress (in 2009, for her performance in “Rachel Getting Married”). She first captured the hearts of young girls everywhere in Disney films like “The Princess Diaries” and “Ella Enchanted,” which showcased both a feminine vulnerability and modern, sassy takes on the traditional “princess” stereotype. From there, Hathaway’s highlights include a supporting role in “Brokeback Mountain”; the action/comedy “Get Smart,” where we saw her more mature, sexy side as Agent 99, the perfect foil to Steve Carell’s bumbling Maxwell Smart; a starring role in “The Devil Wears Prada,” opposite Meryl Streep; and her darker, subversive and ultimately award-worthy performance in “Rachel.” So, in looking at Hathaway’s r

In Sick White Folks News: Jared Loughner’s HS Sweetheart Says He Went Crazy After She Broke Up Him

According to his ex, Jared Loughner “used to be” a typical teenager: The high school sweetheart of the Arizona gunman has said his descent into madness began after she broke up with him. Kelsey Hawkes described how Jared Loughner, whom she dated for a year in 2005 when she was 15, turned from a normal person into a ‘psycho’ when she ended their relationship. The student claimed Loughner ‘fell apart’ when she said she wanted to move on and looked like he had ‘nothing to live for’. Over the following months she watched in dismay as her former love began drinking and taking drugs before cutting himself off from their mutual friends. His warped journey is said to have reached its terrible climax last week when he opened fire at a meeting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, seriously injuring her and killing six others. Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Miss Hawkes, 21, said: ‘My breaking up with him was not the cause of him going off the rails but it was definitely the start of it. ‘Something changed in him, he was not the same person when I told him it was over. ‘I remember his face clearly – he just looked like he had nothing to live for. It was my first relationship and it was his first relationship. He was definitely in love with me but I’m not sure if I could say I was in love with him – it was typical teenage stuff. Jared used to care about everything, his grades, school, his friends. That was when Jared was a normal person. It all stopped when we broke up.’ She added: ‘There was never any sign of that when we were going out, I would not have dated a weirdo.’ Miss Hawkes said the couple met in 2004 – when she was 15 and he was 16 – at a college American football game while both were studying at Mountain View High School in Tucson, Arizona. Although he was in the year above, the pair bonded over shared interests such as rock music. She said: ‘We clicked and we hung out, we did our homework together, we went to the movies. Typical teenage romance stuff.’ Miss Hawkes, who lives in Tucson, near the site where Loughner carried out his plot, said she learned her ex-boyfriend was the mass killer when she got a call from her sister. ‘I had to go home from work and I cried for the rest of the day,’ she said. ‘We had such an ordinary high school relationship that to think of him like that just blows my mind.’ Source

Michelle Williams Says She’ll Watch ‘Brokeback Mountain’ With Daughter

Actress says Matilda will see the film in which her mother and father Heath Ledger co-starred ‘when she’s ready.’ By Terri Schwartz Michelle Williams Photo: Getty Images Michelle Williams already told MTV News that she’ll show her daughter Matilda her racy drama “Blue Valentine” someday, but that’s not the only controversial film the actress thinks she’ll be proud to show her child. In an interview with Angeleno magazine , Williams said that there will be a time in Matilda’s future when she will sit down and show her daughter “Brokeback Mountain,” a film that has a special place in Williams’ heart. “I will watch it with her, when she’s ready,” she said of the gay-cowboy film in which she co-starred with the late Heath Ledger, Matilda’s father. “It is hard to imagine what that would feel like, but one day, yes, we will watch it together.” When describing why “Brokeback” was so important to their family, Williams said, “I was just an actor who happened to be lucky enough to be in the right place, and it was the place where I met Matilda’s father, and that is a lot. It was a lot. And it will be a lot for Matilda too, when she gets around to watching it.” Matilda is only 5-years-old now, but Williams told MTV that she is excited for the day when she can share her work with her child. She described “Blue Valentine” as a movie she could “stand behind” and has been thinking a lot about what Matilda’s reaction to her filmography will be. “I feel like I’m excited for the day when she’s old enough to see it, because my aim is to make her proud that the time I spent away from her wasn’t in vain,” she explained. Williams recently opened up to the press about Ledger’s death. Her ex-boyfriend was found dead in his apartment on January 22, 2008, at age 28. His death was attributed to an accidental overdose of a number of prescription medications. “I’ve found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event itself still doesn’t … I can’t find a meaning for it,” Williams told ABC’s “Nightline.” “I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I can find a lot of meaning in that, but not in why.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Blue Valentine.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
