See One Blockbuster Store’s Sad, Final F— You to Netflix

” Screw Netflix !!!!!!” ” Don’t be stupid !!!!!!” And with one final missive taped to the shelf between copies of Syriana and Shoot ‘Em Up , another doomed Blockbuster store fell to the tyranny of Netflix ‘s superior business model. Might as well screw Netflix with three months’ free rental, eh Blockbuster loyalists? (What about those Redbox bastards, with their $1.20 rentals?) All is not lost, indeed. [ Reddit via Movies.com ]

Titanic and 9 Other Movies Some Folks Don’t Know Are Based on Real Events

James Cameron ’s Titanic is a stunningly realistic portrayal of a sinking ship , but apparently it just got more real for at least a handful of people. According to some tweets that are making the rounds, some younger Americans had no idea until now that the “unsinkable” cruise liner existed and did in fact hit an iceberg and sink in the Atlantic 100 years ago. What? They didn’t watch Downton Abbey and put two and two together either? (Note: Just like the deceased would-be heirs of Downton, Jack and Rose are fictional. Though something tells us many of the Titanic’s passengers probably had acting abilities comparable to Billy Zane’s.) Instead of ridiculing these youths for being ignorant of a fairly remarkable historic event and complaining about Idiocracy becoming more factual each day, let’s turn this into a teaching moment. Here are nine other films that depict a very real thing that happened in human history: Pearl Harbor In case the reference didn’t register at the time, there was a real Day of Infamy behind those insipid comments on Twitter a year ago about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami being payback for Pearl Harbor. Those jerks weren’t talking about the Ben Affleck movie, but a real military strike that happened. The movie that tells the sobering story of the naval base attack in 1941, in which 2,402 Americans were killed, was directed by Michael Bay (which seems like a joke but is true). Apollo 13 The three-man crew on the Apollo 13 mission really did spend four bleak days in their spacecraft after an oxygen tank exploded on the service module. What had been planned as the third manned moon landing instead became a harrowing effort to make it back to Earth safely. The drama captivated the nation on television in 1970, a time before the Internet. The Perfect Storm Before George Clooney and his perfectly disheveled beard hairs set sail in 2000, the dangerous storm that swept away the Andrea Gail fishing vessel really occurred, serving as the basis for the ill-fated film of the same name. Some of the facts in the movie have been disputed, but the 1991 nor’easter/hurricane did in fact collide in what many referred to as “the perfect storm.” The Killing Fields The mass killings by the Khmer Rouge in the mid- to late 1970s might be difficult for even Cambodian youths to fathom, but the story of journalists Dith Pran and Sydney Schanberg was very real. The two were covering the fall of the capital to the regime, and at the time, many journalists managed to flee. Pran was stranded but ended up escaping the death camps. He coined the phrase “killing fields,” the mass grave sites of which there are a mind-boggling 20,000. Alive A chartered flight really did crash in the Andes in 1972, and survivors stayed alive by eating the flesh of dead passengers. Sixteen of them were rescued two months later when Uruguayans Nando Parrado (played in the film by Ethan Hawke) and Roberto Canessa climbed through the mountains for 10 days to seek help. All the President’s Men Wondering where the “-gate” suffix originated? Decades before Weinergate, a little scandal called Watergate happened, and journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were there to reveal the truth behind the wrongdoing and President Nixon’s involvement in it. The film is an adaptation of the reporters’ book, which was based on their investigative reporting in an era before “truthiness.” Silkwood Another pop culture reference is about to make sense to many: A “Silkwood shower” isn’t just something germophobes want to take after they get off the subway. It’s a term derived from a scene in which plutonium plant worker Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep) is, horrifically, contaminated with radiation. Silkwood really did die mysteriously as she planned to reveal wrongdoing at the plant in the mid-’70s. GoodFellas Based on the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, GoodFellas recounts the dirty deeds of Henry Hill and Co. Hill, who became an FBI informant, was a member of the Lucchese crime family and was involved in the also-real Lufthansa heist, among other crimes. Hill’s still out there somewhere, being forced to eat “egg noodles and ketchup” instead of spaghetti with marinara. United 93 After terrorists hijacked United Flight 93 on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, passengers and crew learned of the strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Those aboard refused to let the plane hit its intended target, likely a government building in Washington, D.C., and planned to storm the cockpit. Some liberties were taken regarding whether they successfully entered the cockpit, but unless you believe conspiracy theorists, the plane did crash in a field in Pennsylvania.

George Clooney Arrested During Protest

Actor was arrested in Washington, D.C., outside the Sudanese embassy. By Jocelyn Vena George Clooney is arrested at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington on Friday Photo: Colin Drummond/ Splash News George Clooney was arrested on Friday (March 16) in Washington, D.C., after participating in a protest. The Oscar nominee was taken into custody outside the Sudanese embassy. According to MSNBC , the group was protesting Sudan’s blockage of food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains and aimed to bring attention to the treatment of the people in that area of Sudan. His father, journalist Nick Clooney, was also arrested, according to MSNBC, as well as Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Rep. Jim McGovern and Rep. Jim Moran and former Rep. Tom Andrews. Clooney and the other protesters knew that, because the embassy is private property, they would be arrested if they refused to move. MSNBC reports that the protesters were warned three times before police moved in. The group reportedly held a sign that read, “Sudan: Stop Weapons of Mass Starvation.” He told the large crowd at the protest, “We need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.” He asked “the [Sudanese] government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them, and stop starving them.” According to People.com , the group was then taken to a Secret Service van. “He’s being charged currently with disorderly crossing of a police line, which is a misdemeanor and he will be transported to the second district of the Metropolitan Police Department for processing,” Max Milien, spokesman for the Secret Service, told the site, noting that Clooney was being cooperative. “They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children,” Clooney’s rep said in a statement. “They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.” The actor has been trying to bring change to the area, even meeting with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Obama in the Oval Office on Thursday. One day before, he attended the White House state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron. He is expected to appear on “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on Friday.

Wilson Ramos: Rescued in Venezuela!

Wilson Ramos is safe and sound. The Washington Nationals catcher, who was kidnapped earlier this week at gunpoint in his native Venezuela, was discovered by local authorities yesterday and has reconciled with his family, The Washington Post reports. “It’s a special moment for his family,” Ramos’ agent, Gustavo Mercado, said in a statement to the newspaper. “We’re all happy. We’re grateful.” FBI Agent Chris Voss confirmed the incident took place due to the “money [Ramos] could produce,” while five people have been arrested for the abduction. “I don’t know who those people were,” Ramos said. “I know they’re Colombians by their accent. Three guys grabbed me there in front of my house, they took me to another SUV and from there they took me into the mountains… thanks to God, everything turned out well.” The ballplayer also thanked the police and National Guard commandos who rescued him, saying “the boys did a great job.”

Sister Wives Recap: Goin’ Camping, Polygamy Style

Kody Brown and Robyn Brown, one of the titular stars of TLC’s Sister Wives, welcomed the family’s 17th child last week at their home in Las Vegas, Nevada. With four wives and now 17 kids, guy’s got his hands full. Fortunately, there’s time for fun and family bonding to keep the unit strong. On Sunday’s episode, Kode, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn went camping. Sleeping under the stars, fishing, complaining, yelling, mass chaos … in the end, the camping trip was a lot like any family’s, just much, much bigger. Heading out to Big Bear Lake in California because it’s too hot in Vegas on July 4 – almost hot enough to literally fry an egg on the sidewalk, but not quite – the gang heads to the mountains for a camping trip to reconnect with each other. Some of Kody Brown’s kids are less than thrilled, however. Kody tries to chalk it up to hormones and kids getting pissed for no reason at all in their formative years. Meri thinks the teens are justified in their anger, however. The fam did just move, after all, and Janelle sees resentment in her son Hunter, who feels that the Browns were basically chased out of Utah, friends and family. Hunter also has a problem accepting Robyn, wife #4 . Robyn’s children – she has three by a different father – complicate things, and when they start getting on people’s cases, Meri gets involved and Robyn breaks down. She even describes the possibility of having her children leave the family, since legally, they have the right to choose to live with their father if they like at age 13. That’s on hold for now, but still, emotionally heavy stuff for Robyn. This week’s Sister Wives episode also featured a kid swap of sorts. Christine’s two daughters, Brianne and Isabel, are apparently going to be moving in with Meri, with the rationale behind that Isabel gets along better with Meri. Looks like polygamy has its perks after all – and not just for Kody. Christine says people might think she’s a bad parent, but admits Isabel living with Meri is just one of the things they can do that a conventional family cannot. Robyn has a name for her sister wives’ children: “Bonus children!” Call them what you want, they were not the happiest family ever this week, but that’s okay. Everyone struggles from time to time with familial relationships, and for the Browns, those relationships are very complex, making them hard to work through. Despite their unorthodox lifestyle and enormous brood, they face personal struggles and try to find solutions like the rest of us. It’s funny how that works out. What do you think of Kody Brown and Sister Wives?

We’re A Miracle (Justin Bieber Video) with lyrics

A video I made for Justin Bieber using the song “We’re A Miracle” by Christina Aguilera. Lyrics: Here we are, safe at last We can breath a sigh, seems the storm has passed Through it all, no one knew, That all the tears in heaven, would bring me back to you No one I know, imagined we would make it But it only matters that we both believe [Chorus:] You and me, we’re a miracle; meant to be And nothing can change it Mountains move And oceans part When they are standing in our way You and me, we’re a mircale; Angels stand watching over And heaven shines upon us, everyday Everytime, I felt near defeat You were there for me oh By my side completely You give me strength ohh.. you set me free… hey yeah yeah Its just because of you ohh.. I’m all that i can be ohh.. When im with you, the world is ours to reach for Together there is nothing we can’t do. ooh ooh.. [Chorus] [Bridge:] The chance was so unlikely That we would ever win Two stars among the heavens Destiny brought you to me [Chorus] You and me, We’re a miracle (miracle) You and me, We’re a miracle (miracle) http://www.youtube.com/v/14tEbzwXlzU?f=videos&app=youtube_gdata Read more here: We’re A Miracle (Justin Bieber Video) with lyrics

Universal Won’t Make Ron Howard’s Adaptation of The Dark Tower

Apparently, it just wasn’t meant to be — for now. Per Deadline, Universal has decided not to go forward with the crazy-ambitious adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower that director Ron Howard , producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter/producer Akiva Goldsman had planned over three films and two companion television series. Howard is now free to shop the project to other studios, though whether one bites remains to be seen. This is the second major geek property that Universal has passed on this year, following Guillermo del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness . [ Deadline ]

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ Actor Recovering As Show Goes On

Stuntman Christopher Tierney is walking again after suffering multiple broken bones in a fall during a performance last week. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel Thanks to new safety measures put in place on the set of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the Broadway musical’s preview shows continued on without incident over the holiday weekend. Several “Spider-Man” performances were canceled last week after stuntman and aerialist Christopher Tierney fell an estimated 20 feet and suffered severe injuries during a show last Monday (December 20). Tierney’s father, Timothy, told The New York Times in a phone interview on Friday that his son walked for the first time since the accident with the help of a walker and a brace. The actor had undergone back surgery on Wednesday to treat three fractured vertebrae he sustained in the fall, and had been expected to remain in the intensive care unit of New York’s Bellevue Hospital Center until Monday (December 27). Christopher Tierney also suffered a hairline fracture in his skull, a broken scapula, a broken bone close to his elbow, four broken ribs and a bruised lung. “My understanding is that Chris is fortunate to be alive,” Timothy explained to The Times . Apparently, the 31-year-old had been falling headfirst from a platform after the safety tether to his harness malfunctioned, but he managed to land on his right side in the basement below the stage of the venue — the Foxwoods Theater in Times Square. Timothy Tierney also spoke with The Associated Press about his son’s injury, and said that the musical’s cast and crew were “eagerly waiting [Chris’s] return. “He just felt so blessed to be part of this whole creative process, and he just cannot wait to get back and perform in the show,” Timothy added. Timothy also said doctors were “cautiously optimistic” that his son would eventually resume his career, but the performer will take a while to heal. “We just feel very blessed that Chris is alive and well, and thank goodness that he knew enough to roll onto his right side and land that way rather than land on his head or back,” Timothy said. “Some people fall from a lesser height than Chris and suffer more damage, even fatal damage.” On Wednesday, meanwhile, “Spider-Man” director Julie Taymor issued a statement and wished Tierney a safe recovery. Preview performances continue at the Foxwoods Theater this week as the days tick closer to the musical’s planned official opening on February 7 . The $65 million production features music written by U2’s Bono and The Edge.
