Will ‘Snow White’ Beat Out ‘Men In Black,’ ‘Avengers’ At Weekend Box Office?

Experts weigh in on whether Kristen Stewart’s star power can overtake current box-office champs leading up to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3. By Ryan J. Downey Kristen Stewart as “Snow White” Photo: Universal Last weekend, “Men in Black 3” finally ended the box-office domination of “The Avengers,” which saw the superhero team-up movie smashing world records with the combined might of Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield, Iron Man’s snarky wit and the Hulk’s green fists. During this MTV Movie Awards weekend, “Snow White and the Huntsman” will do battle against them both, with “Thor” himself, Chris Hemsworth, in one of the title roles alongside Kristen Stewart, best-known for a little franchise called “Twilight.” Will Stewart’s vampire fanatic fanbase focus their attention on “Snow White”? Will Thor’s Asgardian thunder rain down more box-office coin in this role? Keep in mind this isn’t the first “Snow White”-centered movie to hit multiplexes this year. Julia Roberts flopped in “Mirror, Mirror” just two months ago. “Huntsman” is headed to theaters with similar reviews (50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Tomatometer” at press time). So how will it do? “It’s going to be close, but ‘Snow White’ should edge out ‘Men in Black 3,’ ” HitFix ‘s Gregory Ellwood told MTV News. MTV Next Movie Executive Editor Kevin Polowy concurred. “Its competition isn’t that daunting. ‘Men in Black’ did well last weekend but hardly gangbusters. ‘The Avengers,’ which is still hanging ridiculously tough a month after opening, might actually be more of a threat than last week’s big winner. But ‘Snow White’ has an alluring cast, the potential to draw all demographics, and most importantly for a summer blockbuster, a whole lotta action.” Jeff Bock, Exhibitor Relations Senior Box Office Analyst, gave the edge to “Huntsman” over “Mirror, Mirror,” which opened at #3 at the box office with just $18.1 million. He credited the newer film’s stronger chances to its tone, likening its style to box-office juggernaut “Alice in Wonderland.” “Universal’s ‘Snow White’ is the one everyone was waiting for; [this one is] done on a much grander scale, more akin to ‘Alice’ and very dark, like the Brothers Grimm fairy tale it spawned from.” ” ‘Snow White’ very clearly wants to be a ‘Lord of the Rings’-like swashbuckling epic, which should draw a bigger, more enticed audience,” agreed Polowy.” “The Avengers” is now the fourth-biggest movie ever, in terms of gross, domestically. The power of “Twilight,” of course, continues. But what will the success or failure of “Snow White” mean for the careers of its respective stars outside of their tried-and-true franchises? “This movie has been sold as Charlize Theron as the evil queen,” Ellwood pointed out. “You could argue that Universal hasn’t done enough to showcase Hemsworth in the movie, especially after the success of ‘The Avengers.’ ” Bock was quick to note talk of a possible “Huntsman”-centered sequel. “Hollywood is pretty smitten with Hemsworth. In the end though, as an ensemble piece, this has very little risk involved for him. If it were to tank, the blame would likely fall on Kristen Stewart, with critics jumping on the ‘she can’t carry a film other than ‘Twilight’ bandwagon. It is quite apparent when watching the movie that the real stars are Hemsworth and Theron, who both give powerhouse performances.” “[The movie’s success or failure] will be very important for Kristen Stewart,” Polowy said. “This is Stewart’s first high-profile starring role outside of ‘Twilight,’ and it’s loaded with variables. Can she open a summer blockbuster? Can she do action? Can she do accents? Can she refrain from biting her lip so much?” “Any opening over $30 million outside of ‘Twilight’ is good for Stewart,” offered Ellwood. “If ‘Snow White’ has legs, it’s a sign she’s can easily transition as a leading lady in tentpole films once her days as Bella are over.” Speaking of “biting” and “legs,” there is another film swimming toward the box office: “Piranha 3DD.” It’s 2010 predecessor, “Piranha 3-D,” was a surprise hit with critics (73 percent on the Tomatometer, which is like an Oscar for that type of horror flick). It didn’t collect huge amounts of cash, but it certainly did well enough for the Weinstein Company/ Dimension Films to warrant a follow-up, for which director John Gulager (“Feast”) took over for Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”). However, despite the critical love for the last one, “Piranha 3DD” sat at a lowly 20 percent on the Tomatometer at press time. “Critics loved the first Piranha because it exploited everything cheesy about campy horror films — and 3-D flicks — in tongue-in-cheek style. The sequel is merely exploitation of that success,” Bock said. “Based on the theater count of 75 theaters, you can see that this one will go belly up quick and flushed down the drain.” Flesh-eating fish and “Snow White” aside, the $600 million question, as Polowy put it, is whether anything will beat “The Avengers” in 2012. All three of the experts we contacted agreed that only one film stands a chance. Which film is that? Let’s just say it involves a cape, a cowl and maybe a broken back. “There’s only one candidate who could come close, and its name is ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ ” Polowy said of the forthcoming flick, for which an exclusive clip will premiere at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. “Assuming [filmmaker] Christopher Nolan recaptures the magic of his last Batman blockbuster, and Tom Hardy’s Bane proves a viable replacement for Heath Ledger’s Joker, it will be close.” “It will have to be as strong critically as ‘The Dark Knight,’ ” said Ellwood. “That may be the only way to pull in [people who visit the movies four to six times per year]. Besides the added benefit of higher 3-D ticket prices, ‘The Avengers’ became a de facto family film, something ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ clearly isn’t, which helped fuel its coffers. Warner Bros. will need strong repeat business and massive adoration for ‘Rises’ to overtake ‘The Avengers.’ It’s arguably Batman’s toughest challenge yet.” Bock agreed it’s a huge challenge for Bats, one that may prove more defeating than anything Bane could cook up. “Even considering ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is probably the most anticipated threequel since ‘Return of the Jedi,’ ‘The Avengers’ is playing like Earth’s mightiest sequel. And that’s exactly what it is.” “Sorry Batman, you’ve been busted by Hollywood’s box-office brigade,” he concluded. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey Tease ‘Dirty’ Reunion

‘Magic Mike’ co-stars might be teaming up again, they reveal during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — ” Magic Mike ” co-stars Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey have been seeing a lot of each other lately — and we’re not just talking about the thong-heavy wardrobe for their upcoming stripper flick, due June 29. As part of our Sneak Peek Week leading up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, June 3, the castmates, along with producer/screenwriter Reid Carolin, took to the Universal Studios CityWalk stage in L.A. to debut an exclusive clip from their film and participate in a 30-minute Q&A session. When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz pointed out that Tatum and McConaughey seem to have great chemistry, wondering aloud if they’d ever collaborate again, Tatum let a few juicy tidbits slip. “Actually, a script just got turned in,” he revealed. Asked whether the film would be a drama, comedy or something of the stripper variety, the actor’s answer was coy, yet titillating: “It’ll be dirty, let’s just say that. Dirty and dangerous.” With the pair portraying exotic dancers in their latest endeavor, it’s hard to imagine how much more dirty and/or dangerous things can get. We’ll have to wait and see! In the meantime, you can catch Tatum at this weekend’s Movie Awards, where he’s nominated for five Golden Popcorn trophies, including Best Male Performance (“The Vow”), Best Cast (“21 Jump Street”), Best Fight (“21 Jump Street”), Best Kiss (“The Vow”) and Best Hero (“21 Jump Street”). ‘Magic Mike’ Cast Had No Problem Getting Naked

‘It was hilarious that none of them really balked,’ Channing Tatum tells MTV News during Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey Photo: MTV News Struggling actors are no strangers to the odd job — be it waiting tables, walking dogs or washing cars. Few, however, would admit to taking their clothes off for cash, and even fewer would later document their sordid side gig in a feature film helmed by an Oscar-winning director. But few actors are Channing Tatum . As part of our Sneak Peek Week leading up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, Tatum, along with ” Magic Mike ” co-star Matthew McConaughey and producer/screenwriter Reid Carolin, took to the Universal CityWalk stage in L.A. to debut an exclusive clip and chat about their stripper flick, out June 29. And while Tatum doesn’t shy away from talking about his past, it took a little convincing from director Steven Soderbergh to convince the actor his story was big-screen-worthy. “I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping]. I’d been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, ‘We gotta make a movie out of that.’ And I was like, ‘Why? Why do we need to do that?’ And he said, ‘I’ve never seen that world on film before.’ And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality.” So the two set out to bring “Magic Mike” to life — without studio funding. “We put money into it and did it ourselves,” Tatum explained. “I don’t know if people realize it, but it was an independent movie.” An independent movie, albeit with an impressive cast including Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey, who said he simply couldn’t turn down an offer from Soderbergh to play groovy club owner Dallas. “He pitched me the story, and 10 minutes into it, I was on my knees in my house laughing,” McConaughey recalled. “And I said, ‘Tell me, any words of advice?’ And he said, ‘This guy, Dallas, he’s connected to the UFOs in space.’ And then I said, ‘Anything else?’ And he said, ‘You really can’t go wrong.’ And I said, ‘I’m in.’ ” And that’s when the real work began. Tatum took McConaughey to a male revue in New Orleans so he could get a glimpse into that world. “He loved it,” Tatum recalled with a grin. In fact, according to Tatum, none of the men seemed too worried about dropping trou. “The first day of rehearsals, I looked at the guys and we went through our stuff, and I was like, ‘All right. It’s time to get naked, boys.’ And it was hilarious that none of them really balked.” And neither did the female extras on set, who couldn’t seem to calm their excitement during McConaughey’s solo performance, in particular. “We could not get the women to sit down in the front row,” recalled Tatum with a laugh. “They just ran at the stage.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Justin Bieber Laughs Off Paris Concussion

‘I will see u again Glass,’ Bieber tweets after hitting his head on a glass wall during a secret show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Island/Def Jam When Justin Bieber was in Paris on Thursday (May 31) to perform a secret show for his fans in the lead-up to the release of his Believe album, he got a surprise of his own when he walked into a glass wall, injuring himself mid-set. According to an interview with TMZ , he bumped into the wall but was able to finish out the performance. “I was performing, and I was going offstage and, basically, I’m in Paris and performing on the tallest building in Paris, and there’s a glass wall behind me, but there’s a railing behind the glass. And so I went to reach for the railing and I hit my head on the glass,” he explained. “And I guess me and glass windows don’t really go together.” He is referring to a viral video of himself going through a glass revolving door where he hit his head from back in 2010. However, this incident was a bit more serious and he added that he “felt lightheaded,” but “my adrenaline pushed me through it and I performed the last song.” After he walked off the stage, he passed out for 15 seconds and later learned he suffered a concussion. “I feel good. I feel good,” he assured his fans. “I have a little bit of a headache, but I feel fine.” On top of clearing the air with TMZ about the incident, he was able to laugh it off on Twitter : “Thanks for the love but there are alot of people out there who need prayers. im fine. just smacked my head and needed some water. all good. im Canadian. we are tough. lol. its all good. just gotta take it easy the rest of the night. back at it again for u guys tomorrow. I have amazing fans. very grateful for your love,” he continued. “Gonna eat, rest, get some sleep and tomorrow Im back at it. The show must go on! Love yall. We got this.” Bieber had this message for the glass wall. “I will see u again Glass. I will have my revenge. BIEBER vs GLASS. MGM LAS VEGAS 2013. lol. #GottaLaughAtYourself,” he joked. While chatting with TMZ, Bieber also commented on the pandemonium he stirred up when he performed a secret show in Oslo, Norway, earlier this week , during which several young fans were injured. “Oh my goodness that was crazy. The fans were insane. I even had to go to this secret location or else they were going to cancel my show, it was crazy,” he said. “Norway’s been waiting for me to come, and I’ve never been to Norway. It was nuts.” Despite several minor setbacks on his secret-show tour, Bieber plans to continue his final 10 around the world in the lead-up to the June 19 album release. When MTV News caught up with Bieber before Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , he threw all his support behind multi-nominee “Bridesmaids.” “I just think it was funny. It’s kind of like the female version of ‘The Hangover,’ ” he said. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! T.I.’s Trouble Man Will Be ‘More Aggressive Than Paper Trail’

‘All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment,’ Tip tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but don’t fret: The King of the South has it all figured out. Throughout his career, T.I. has delivered various types of records, catering to different audiences, and though he has continually messaged that his next album, Trouble Man , will be a return to his aggressive style of rap, Tip has a little something for everyone. “All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment in time,” T.I. told MTV News’ Sway Calloway when he appeared on “RapFix Live.” “So the biggest difference in the man that I am today and the man that I was then, I guess musically, it’s gonna be more aggressive than Paper Trail . Back in 2008 when Tip dropped Paper Trail, the album that housed two of his biggest hits — the Justin Timberlake-assisted “Dead and Gone” and “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna — he purposely stayed away from his usual trap music because he was facing federal weapons charges at the time. Now that he has completed his prison sentence, the Atlanta rapper doesn’t have the same constraints, so fans can expect to hear hustle-heavy tracks not unlike his 2003 single “Rubber Band Man.” Still, on the upcoming Trouble Man, Tip plans to satisfy fans who not only appreciate his underground work, but those who crave his Top 40 hits as well. He calls it a “high-class problem.” “There are so many classes of people and so many different demographics that are looking to T.I. to redeliver their favorite song,” he explained. “I’ve come to the conclusion that when you service one group of those fans, then there’s gonna be another group of fans who feel like, ‘He should’ve done what I wanted him to do.’ So you just gotta serve each group, so I’m servicing each group at a time.” How much are you looking forward to Trouble Man ? Robert Pattinson’s Next Movie: A Modern-Day ‘Bonnie And Clyde’?

‘Twilight’ producer says Pattinson would be ‘fantastic’ in the big-screen adaptation of ‘The Professionals.’ By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Getty Images When it comes to knowing the comings and goings of Robert Pattinson , we’d like to consider ourselves experts, or very much in the know with regard to what movies we can expect to see the “Twilight” superstar make next. We know about his roles in “Bel Ami” , “Cosmopolis” , and of course “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” , but what do you think of Pattinson tackling a modern-day thriller a la “Bonnie and Clyde”? When MTV News caught up with “Twilight” producer Wyck Godfrey recently to discuss Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s chances of another Best Kiss win at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3), he revealed that he and Pattinson might be cooking up some post-“Breaking Dawn – Part 2” work plans, in the form of a big-screen adaptation of a crime thriller. “There’s a book called “The Professionals,” which is a new crime thriller that Rob has read and really likes,” Godfrey said of Owen Laukkanen’s well-received debut novel. “We’re just starting to look at a writer [to adapt it]. It’s kind of a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ for today, and he would be fantastic in the role. It’s in the early days; we’ll see.” A modern-day version of “Bonnie and Clyde” sounds gritty and violent no matter which way you look at it. We asked Godfrey if he sees this potential big-screen crime thriller as a PG-13- or R-rated film for Pattinson. “Possibly R,” he said. “[Rob’s] an adult now.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now!
