‘All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment,’ Tip tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but don’t fret: The King of the South has it all figured out. Throughout his career, T.I. has delivered various types of records, catering to different audiences, and though he has continually messaged that his next album, Trouble Man , will be a return to his aggressive style of rap, Tip has a little something for everyone. “All of my albums are basically a reflection of where I am in my life at that moment in time,” T.I. told MTV News’ Sway Calloway when he appeared on “RapFix Live.” “So the biggest difference in the man that I am today and the man that I was then, I guess musically, it’s gonna be more aggressive than Paper Trail . Back in 2008 when Tip dropped Paper Trail, the album that housed two of his biggest hits — the Justin Timberlake-assisted “Dead and Gone” and “Live Your Life” featuring Rihanna — he purposely stayed away from his usual trap music because he was facing federal weapons charges at the time. Now that he has completed his prison sentence, the Atlanta rapper doesn’t have the same constraints, so fans can expect to hear hustle-heavy tracks not unlike his 2003 single “Rubber Band Man.” Still, on the upcoming Trouble Man, Tip plans to satisfy fans who not only appreciate his underground work, but those who crave his Top 40 hits as well. He calls it a “high-class problem.” “There are so many classes of people and so many different demographics that are looking to T.I. to redeliver their favorite song,” he explained. “I’ve come to the conclusion that when you service one group of those fans, then there’s gonna be another group of fans who feel like, ‘He should’ve done what I wanted him to do.’ So you just gotta serve each group, so I’m servicing each group at a time.” How much are you looking forward to Trouble Man ? No Mercy, due December 7, also will feature Kanye West, Chris Brown, The-Dream and Christina Aguilera. By Paul Cantor T.I. and Eminem Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ John Shearer/ Getty Images T.I. and Eminem have teamed up once again, this time for “All She Wrote,” which leaked online Tuesday (November 16). The song is from T.I.’s upcoming album, No Mercy , due in stores December 7. T.I. recently began an 11-month stint in an Arkansas prison for parole violations. His problems with the law have left him with a fair share of critics, and “All She Wrote” takes a shot back at them. Witness the song’s hook: “I don’t really care what you call me, just as long as you don’t call me broke/ I bet they knew as soon as they saw me, good night it’s over with that’s all she wrote/ Streets like cold Chicago, ain’t nothing new, I seen it all before/ But still I ball like no tomorrow, good night it’s over with that’s all she wrote.” Of No Mercy , T.I. wrote on his website: “This album represents some of my best work inspired by my most recent best and worst life experiences … I’ve been taking stock of myself and digesting everyone’s comments and criticisms. Now it’s my turn to express myself and take you into my mind.” The production on “All She Wrote” is a mellow affair, guitar strums over steady staccato 808s. It allows both artists adequate space to let their voices take center stage. Speculatively, in the first verse, T.I. addresses former Grand Hustle member Alfamega, who the Smoking Gun revealed last year was a DEA informant. T.I. raps, “Others sworn under oath or vanished left completely scorned/ You tell lies, get cut n—a, kick rocks/ You never did blend in with the big shots.” Eminem’s verses, however, deal more with the opposite sex: “I rather slip and fall in sh– than fall in love with you/ Before I f—ing tie a knot, I’ll tie you in one/ Bitch you think this is a Nintendo game, how f—ing dumb is you/ I’ll give you some lumps before I split some lump sums with you.” No Mercy , T.I.’s seventh LP and first release since 2008’s double-platinum Paper Trail , also will feature appearances from Kanye West, Chris Brown, The-Dream and Christina Aguilera. Production will be handled by Dr. Luke (“Magic,” “Right Round”), Danja (“My Love,” “Knock You Down”) and Jim Jonsin (“Whatever You Like,” “Lollipop”), among others. T.I. and Eminem last officially collaborated on T.I.’s 2007 album T.I. vs. T.I.P. on the track “Touchdown.” Which of T.I.’s No Mercy collaborations are you most excited to hear? In his first on-camera interview since completing his sentence, rapper says album is ‘classic T.I.’ By Shaheem Reid T.I. in an interview posted Thursday on trapmuzik.com Photo: Trapmuzik.com On Thursday (April 1), T.I. had his first on-camera interview since completing his jail sentence , revealing a few more details about his upcoming album and speaking for the first time about his time behind bars. “I’m happy to be home,” Tip said during the interview, posted on his TrapMuzik.com Web site. “I feel better than I’ve ever felt. I learned a lot, grew a lot. Now, I think it’s time to put all that to good use.” The multi-platinum Grammy-winning rapper has been working on his yet-untitled next album (due August 24) but said that he wasn’t feeling creative behind the prison walls. “I didn’t write too much. People might have thought I was doing a lot of writing, but I didn’t write that much,” Tip said. “I didn’t get a lot of time to. It was a lot of activity around me, so I really wasn’t motivated to create.” The first song from his album is called “I’m Back.” The tone of the LP is vintage Tip. “I want to maintain the level of success I’ve been fortunate enough to do over and over again over the years,” Tip said. “This album is different in many ways. I think that Paper Trail was a lot more about thoughts; this is more about feelings. This is significantly more aggressive, or at least at this period in production. Who knows? I can do 10 love songs tomorrow and change the direction. At this point, right now, it’s going hard. It’s going hard like classic T.I.” T.I. was sentenced to a year and a day in jail last March stemming from a 2007 arrest for attempting to illegally purchase firearms. Rapper will reportedly be placed under 23 days of supervised release. By James Montgomery T.I. (file) Photo: Gifted Talents/ RMG T.I. is officially a free man. Mostly. On Friday (March 26), the rapper completed his prison sentence , stemming from a 2007 arrest for attempting to illegally purchase firearms. Originally given 366 days in prison, T.I. was released to a halfway house in December and earlier this month, he was allowed to return home to finish the remainder of his sentence, which ended today, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records. But T.I. isn’t exactly out of the woods just yet. While his home confinement may have ended, his lawyer reportedly told TMZ that T.I. will now be placed under 23 days of “supervised release,” meaning he’ll have to be home by 11 p.m. unless he’s performing, in which case, his curfew is extended until 1 a.m. The Web site also reported that the rapper still needs to complete some 400 hours of community service and will remain on probation for three years. Before his prison stint began, T.I. made an arrangement with prosecutors, in which he would complete 1,500 hours of community service, 1,000 of which needed to be completed before he would be formally sentenced. In exchange, he was given the 366-day jail sentence, which allowed him the opportunity for early release. T.I. officially began serving his time in May, meaning he ended up doing 10 months of the year-and-a-day bid. Since being moved to the halfway house in December, T.I. has been recording the follow-up to his 2008 album, Paper Trail, and earlier this month, he announced plans for a brand- new single, “I’m Back.” Do you think T.I. will regain the status he had before his prison sentence? What do you want to see him do next? Sound off below. Related Artists T.I.
