20 years ago today the world lost one of its greatest talents, specifically within the world of hip-hop. On September 13, 1996, Tupac Shakur died of fatal gunshot wounds he sustained in a shooting and his life was cut entirely too short at the age of 25. As social media has continued to show an […]

Unless you just emerged from the Sarlacc Pit, you probably know that we're less than a week away from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens . You might also be aware that the franchise has been known to inspire just a smidge of obsessive devotion from fans, which means the Internet has been a breeding ground for wild speculation about the new film ever since the first trailer debuted last year. Some of the theories are totally plausible. (It's entirely possible, for example that Luke Skywalker has been left out of the film's marketing campaign because J.J. Abrams and company don't want to reveal that he's gone to the Dark Side.) Others are wackier than the Mos Eisley Cantina at last call on singles' night. We've assembled a decent mix here, but we've mostly focused on the weird ones, because, c'mon…you're so close to the big day, you don't really want to be hit with any spoilers now , do you? Imagine if someone told you that Vader was Luke's father right before you saw The Empire Strikes Back! Sorry, if we ruined that for you, but we have a strict policy here at THG: No advance spoiler warnings on movies that are old enough to run for president. 1. Finn is the Son of Lando Calrissian…and Princess Leia No one’s quite sure how the theory that John Boyega’s character is the son of Lando Calrissian and Princess, excuse us…GENERAL Leia, but you can blame J.J. Abrams for fanning the flames on this one. Asked about Finn’s lineage in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director responded, “I will only say about that that it is completely intentional that their last names aren’t public record.” Hmm…could be something to this one. 2. Luke Skywalker is Kylo Ren The latest trailers show Kylo Ren pledging to his allegiance to Darth Vader’s battered helmet. Luke isn’t seen in any of the trailers and he Is Vader’s son, so…eh, we’re not buying it. 3. Boba Fett is Back! Die hard fans have noticed that the first trailer features a banner with a Mandalorian insignia. The franchise’s most badass bounty hunter just happens to hail from Mandalore. Of course, even if he shows up, he probably end up not doing jack squat again. 4. You Can Watch The First Two Minutes Online! Some fans believe that a completed cut of the first two minutes of the film has leaked online. The fact that there’s a typo in the iconic text crawl leads us to believe they’re mistaken. 5. Han Solo Dies! This one’s not actually all that ridiculous. We could easily imagine Han going out in some noble fashion. After all, we can’t imagine Harrison Ford signing on for endless sequels. It would be tragic, but less horrific than if… 6. Chewbacca Dies! The first trailer showed a grieving Rey in the same frame as a tuft of hair. Is it Chewie?! Could be! Of course, it also be come random Wookie. View Slideshow
Robert Loggia – the actor who is perhaps best known for his role as drug kingpin Frank Lopez in Scarface – has passed away at the age of 85. According to Variety , Loggia passed away at his home in Los Angeles just hours ago. His wife of 33 years, Cynthia Loggia, reports that he had been battling Alzheimer’s disease. Loggia appeared in over 60 films and television shows over the course of his nearly six-decade career in Hollywood. In addition to his role in Scarface, he’s best known to modern audiences for his work on such films and as An Officer and a Gentleman, Big, and Independence Day. Loggia was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1986 for his work in Jagged Edge. Though primarily a star of the big screen, Loggia also played memorable roles on The Sporanos and Malcolm in the Middle. The latter earned him a nomination for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. While he made a career of playing hardboiled gangsters and grizzled cops, friends and family say Loggia was a kind and compassionate man who always made time for his fans and loved to laugh at himself. Fans of the Fox sitcom Family Guy will likely recall the oft-quoted scene in which Loggia lampoons his celebrity status by slowly spelling out his name to an airport check-in clerk. (“‘R,’ as in ‘Robert Loggia, ‘O,’ as in ‘Oh my God, it’s Robert Loggia!'”) The consummate “actor’s actor,” Loggia nurtured the career of many and up-and-comers, and colleagues and proteges alike are currently paying tribute to the late legend on social media. Loggia is survived by his wife and four children. View Slideshow: Celebrities We Lost in 2015
What’s worse than having your name chosen as a participant in The Hunger Games? Releasing a poster in anticipation of the final Hunger Games movie… only for keen Internet eyes to notice something fishy about it. And by “fishy,” we mean hilariously dirty and really Not Safe for Work at all. Not Safe for Work or Wife , really, for that matter. The poster in question features an extreme close up of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. It has a hashtag in the bottom left-hand corner. It has the name of the film a bit higher up. So far, so good. But it also has the words “100 Days Until” scrawled across Ms. Everdeen’s face… only the word “Until” bleeds into the second zero in “100” and the first letter in “Days” and… can you see what we’re getting at here? Can you see what word has been accidentally formed? No? Here’s a hint: It’s every single woman’s least favorite word in the world. Get it now? Do we need to C U Next Tuesday in order to double check? Ah, yes. There it is! No word yet from anyone at Lionsgate concerning this hilarious snafu, but we can’t wait for Lawrence to talk about it on future talk show appearance. It looks like Ben Affleck has found a way to keep himself busy in the wake of his divorce from Jennifer Garner . Deadline has confirmed that Affleck will direct and star in his very own standalone Batman film down the line. No release date has been set and no title has been revealed, but Affleck will co-write the blockbuster along with comic books scribe Geoff Johns. Events in the movie will be set after whatever goes down in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, along with what takes place in 2017’s Justice League movie, which will unite nearly all DC superheroes on the big screen. Affleck was named as the latest actor to don the cape and cowl last year, taking over for Christian Bale, who portrayed the Caped Crusade in three Christopher Nolan films. Among the many rumors for why Affleck is splitting from Garner, at least one report actually blamed his casting as Batman . The Oscar winner is supposedly more focused on his career than his personal life. We don’t know about that, but we do know that we can’t wait to see his take on Batman! Furious 7 was Paul Walker’s final film, and with the premiere of his last ride, we can finally answer the question fans have wondered for almost 18 months: What happens to his character, Brian O’Conner? Obviously, the mother of all Furious 7 spoilers awaits, so turn back now if you want to see the movie first. We can tell Walker fans they won’t be let down … When Paul Walker tragically died in a car crash in late November 2013 during a break from filming, it wasn’t clear if Furious 7 would even be finished. The producers eventually decided to go ahead and re-write it, but the question of how to end things for Walker’s Brian O’Conner was far from simple. Perhaps Brian, an undercover officer who went on to become a part of this “family” of street racers, would retire, riding off (literally) into the sunset. Plausible, albeit somewhat unlikely knowing Brian. Or perhaps he could die in a heroic way, giving up his life for those he cared about most in the world. The problem with that, of course, is that it would be like watching art imitate life, reliving Walker’s tragic demise in a way that might polarize audiences. So what direction did the movie decide on?! With the aid of body doubles and CGI, Brian cheats death as he always have in Furious 7 , and the ending may have a few grown men hiding tears. Seriously. The reason Furious 7 reviews have been so positive is that for all its over-the-top action, it’s got real heart, and boy, it wears it with pride. Brian retires, and while he doesn’t say as much, the whole crew looks on as he plays with his son and Dom (Vin Diesel) says “things will be different” now. The film then basically acknowledges that Walker has died, a risky move blending fiction with reality, but providing the chance for a moving tribute. After his pensive reflection following the gripping final action sequences, Dom gets up to leave without saying goodbye, only to have Brian chase him down. Paying homage to 2001’s The Fast and the Furious , the duo revs up for a race, and we are treated to a montage of Walker from all the past Fast films. By the time that’s over, it’s suddenly really dusty in theaters as we watch both Brian and Dom, and “brothers” Paul Walker and Vin Diesel say goodbye. Vin Diesel named his daughter after Paul and has been open about how much Walker meant to him. In that respect, this was pretty much perfect. The movie’s final scene shows Dom and Brian racing in the streets from above until they reach a fork in the road, and veer off in opposite directions. As the screen fades to black from this simple, yet profound and emotional parting of ways, the words “For Paul” appear just before the credits roll. For fans of the franchise, it’s pretty awesome. Vin may be reaching a bit when he says Furious 7 deserves an Oscar , but he and the rest of the team can certainly hold their heads high after this. Remembering Paul Walker (1973-2013) 1. Ever since we learned that Jared Leto was cast as the Joker in director David Ayers’ highly-anticipated Suicide Squad, we’ve been trying to imagine what the svelte, long-locked, eternally youthful actor would look like as Batman’s most iconic foe. It’s probably a futile task, considering we couldn’t have have conjured up an accurate image of Heath Ledger’s Joker if you’d given us a thousand years and a gallon of LSD. But while Ledger was famously secretive about his preparations, Leto has been providing some clues as to what we can expect from his version of Gotham’s clown prince of crime. Last week, we learned that Leto is gaining weight for the role , because apparently he pictures the Joker as a sort of manic overweight comedian, a la Louie Anderson. (See every SNL cast ever for other examples.) Today, another piece of the puzzle fell into place as we learned that Leto’s Joker won’t be no gosh darn hippie: Yes, Tree Hugger Leto has morphed back into Zoolander Leto by lopping off his famous locks. Social media seems split on the decision. Some are thrilled to see that Leto is throwing it back to his days as Jordan Catalano on My So-Called Life. (Or the blonde in Fight Club, or the one-armed junkie in Requiem For a Dream. So many dreamy roles to choose from.) Others are decrying the loss of one of the great man-manes in Hollywood. Regardless of your feelings on Leto’s new ‘do, however, one thing is for sure – it’ll be a treat to see the heartthrob actor complete his transformation into one of the world’s most famous villains. Step aside, Vinny Chase – there’s a new Aquaman in town! Okay, we’d like to apologize for that horribly dated Entourage reference. Let us make it up to you with this badass first photo of Jason Momoa as the man who can talk to fish: Like millions of nerds across the country, we’re pleasantly surprised to see arguably the lamest superhero in the DC universe actually looking pretty cool. You might remember Momoa as the ill-fated Khal Drogo from the first season of Game of Thrones . If you’re not a GoT fan, check out Momoa’s audition tape to get a sense of just what kind of frightening lunacy this dude is bringing to the table. The photo was tweeted by director Zack Snyder as a teaser for 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice . Yes, this thing is gonna have more heroes than Spiderman 3 had villains. Hope you like your action flicks 4 hours long! As for the meaning of “unite the seven,” that’s been a subject of debate amongst fans. Some say it refers to Aquaman’s plans to rule over all seven seas (an argument supported by Snyder including the phrase “one true king” in his caption). Others say it’s an allusion to the members of the Justice League (Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter). Either way, it’s clear that Aquaman is no longer the Meg Griffin of comic book heroes, and we have to admit…we’re a little bummed that we can’t make fun of him anymore without fearing for our lives. 36 Memorable Movie Posters 1. Well, this is unexpected. In case you’re somehow unaware, the new Clint Eastwood-Bradley Cooper film American Sniper is a massive hit with audiences, but its also drawn a good deal of criticism, in part because large portions of Chris Kyle’s memoirs – on which the film was based – are believed to be fabricated. Michael Moore referred to snipers as cowards and is still subjected to daily Twitter hate as a result. Seth Rogen compared the film to Nazi propaganda and the actor received swift and immediate backlash. Eastwood has been largely silent on the subject, so it was somewhat surprising when he decided to offer his two cents to a TMZ cameraman last night. It’s really surprising when you hear what he had to say: Clint Eastwood Talks American Sniper Yes, Squinty Clint seems to agree with those who have claimed that the film is not without its problematic elements. It’s possible that Eastwood just misunderstood the question, but it’s equally possible that he meant what he said, and that his film is being used to support political ideologies with which he doesn’t agree. Anyone who’s seen at the RNC knows that Clint is a card-carrying Republican, but he’s generally moderate and often left-leaning in his politics. Eastwood has been openly critical of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and though he’s clearly a supporter of the troops, it’s not surprising that he might object to some warhawks finding a message in Sniper that’s not really there. Or, it could be that he acknowledges that Kyle made some questionable claims in his autobiography and you’re not necessarily disparaging an American hero if you point out that Kyle didn’t really snipe looters after Katrina or beat up Governor Jesse Ventura. Or maybe Clint’s just defending the right of his critics to openly express their thoughts on his film. After all, Clint is pretty much the quintessential American, and what’s more American than freedom of speech? Then again, this is the same Eastwood that threatened to kill Michael Moore , so there might be something to that “didn’t understand the question” theory. Debut Roles of 2015 Oscar Nominees 1.
