Oscar 2012 Nominations: Biggest Snubs And Surprises

‘Harry Potter,’ Albert Brooks passed over, while Gary Oldman finally gets his due. By Kevin P. Sullivan Melissa McCarthy in “Bridesmaids” Photo: Universal We now have the answer to one of awards season’s biggest questions: We know who has been nominated for the 2012 Academy Awards . All we need to know now is who wins. This year’s Oscar nominations didn’t offer any enormous surprises, but a few of the snubs have some people gasping. Right off the bat, it must be addressed. Albert Brooks was not nominated for his delightfully evil turn in “Drive.” Both Brooks and the film have a passionate following, so Max von Sydow’s nomination for “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” over Brooks can’t come as welcome news for the movie’s many fans. Brooks hilariously responded to the snub over Twitter, saying, “I got ROBBED. I don’t mean the Oscars, I mean literally. My pants and shoes have been stolen.” That’s it, Al. Kill them with laughter. But let’s not focus on the negative. A great injustice was righted with the nominations. Gary Oldman’s nod for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” didn’t come as a complete surprise, but it was a welcome one. Shockingly, the famed British actor had never been nominated before now. After decades of memorable characters, Oldman has finally gotten his due. He and the Best Actor category’s other surprise, Demi

Reese Witherspoon To Premiere ‘This Means War’ Clip On MTV

Witherspoon stars in the McG-directed comedy-action film as a seductive female dating two of the world’s deadliest CIA operatives (played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) whose partnership and friendship is put in jeopardy when they begin to battle for her affections. Instead of ‘fessing up to her about the love triangle, they try to settle the matter using all the weapons at their disposal. The film also stars one of Witherspoon’s real-life pals, comedian and “Chelsea Lately” host Chelsea Handler, who gives Reese’s character the terrible advice that she should continue dating both men. After positive word-of-mouth during test screenings, Twentieth Century Fox pushed the movie’s release date up by three days to Valentine’s Day (February 14). “After all,” said director McG, “everyone needs a little action on Valentine’s Day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “This Means War.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Robert Pattinson’s ‘Cosmopolis’ Wins MTV Movie Brawl

More than 3 million votes were cast to push the David Cronenberg-directed indie over brand-new franchise ‘The Hunger Games.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon in “Cosmopolis” Photo: David Cronenberg The final buzzer has sounded, the brawl for it all is over, and Robert Pattinson is the last man standing: “Cosmopolis” has won MTV Movie Brawl 2012 . His indie drama made for one hell of a Cinderella story in the vote-driven tournament to pick the must-see movie of the year. Entering the bracket as a #4 seed (following an impressive showing in the play-in round), “Cosmopolis” appeared to be facing an unavoidable Elite Eight ouster. What were the chances Pattinson’s cerebral film about a young finance wiz taking a day-long limo ride though New York City would beat “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”? Apparently pretty good. Fans banded together, choosing to support RPattz’s post-vampire career rather than the franchise that made him a star. “Breaking Dawn” was sent packing. And so, after easily fighting off “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Cosmopolis” came to face “The Hunger Games,” a brand-new franchise that had waltzed through the tournament and seemed to be the odds-on favorite to win the whole tourney. But it was not to be. After more than 3 million votes and a slew of lead changes, Pattinson’s film beat back Jennifer Lawrence’s series to become the undisputed champion of the Movie Brawl. Hours before voting closed Monday afternoon (January 23), with “Cosmopolis” staking out an insurmountable lead and the MTV Movies team at the Sundance Film Festival, we broke the news to Pattinson’s co-star, Paul Giamatti, that their film had won the tournament. “Holy cow, that’s astounding!” he said. “The fact of that is amazing. … That’s a really cool thing that it brings that visibility to that movie.” It’s been a whirlwind few weeks in the tournament, so we’d like to thank all the fans who voted. The Brawl broke bigger than we could have ever hoped. Well over 5 million votes were cast. The competition spread wildly over Twitter and Facebook. Our comments sections caught fire as fans debated, argued and rallied. In the end, though, only one film could stand as the undisputed champion of the MTV Movie Brawl. Pattinson, Giamatti, director David Cronenberg and everyone connected to “Cosmopolis” — we salute you! See the results of the matches In MTV’s Movie Brawl 2012! Spike Lee: “Hollyweird Studios Know Absolutely Nothing About Black People”

Man, Spike Lee sure has a potty mouth: Spike Lee had a message for the Sundance festival crowd at tonight’s world premiere of his new film, “Red Hook Summer”: “Please tell them that this is not a motherf**king sequel to ‘Do the Right Thing’!” That’s what people had been saying, mostly to fill the vacuum of information surrounding the movie. All anyone seemed to know was that it was set in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, that it followed a 13-year-old boy (newcomer Jules Brown) and his preacher grandfather (played by ‘The Wire’ veteran Clarke Peters), and that it featured the return of Mookie, Lee’s pizza-delivering character from his trailblazing 1989 movie about tensions boiling over in the summer heat. Lee, who took the stage for the post-screening Q&A draped in New York Giants regalia and immediately declared that the audience had “doubled the black population of Utah — maybe tripled it,” prefers to think of “Red Hook Summer” as “another installment in my great chronicles of Brooklyn,” a series that includes “She’s Gotta Have It,” Do the Right Thing,” “Clockers” and “Crooklyn.” “We never went to the studios with this film, I told you!” he shouted. “We said, ‘Were gonna do this motherf**king film ourselves and show it at Sundance…. This whole thing was planned out.” Of the studios, he added, “They know nothing about black people. And they gonna give me notes about what a young black boy and girl gonna do in Red Hook? F**k no! We had to do it ourselves!” Make sure y’all support Spike and his film! Source More On Bossip! How Is “Red Tails” Doing At The Box Office?

Bin Laden Movie Remains Top-Secret, Joel Edgerton Says

The actor also spoke with MTV News about the ‘very subtle’ use of 3-D in ‘The Great Gatsby.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Joel Edgerton Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Joel Edgerton could tell you about Kathryn Bigelow ‘s untitled Osama Bin Laden movie, but then he’d have to kill you. OK, perhaps it’s not as dramatic as all of that. Still, the “Wish You Were Here” actor spoke briefly with MTV News about starring in the Navy Seal thriller alongside Chris Pratt and Jessica Chastain , and while he’s “very excited” to start shooting the film, his lips are sealed on the top-secret op. “I can’t really tell you anything about it,” he told MTV during the Sundance Film Festival . “I don’t know that I can’t tell you anything about it, but I’d be very ill informed to talk about it at this point. But I’m just excited to work with all of those guys.” Edgerton was much more inclined to talk about “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann ‘s upcoming adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. The Australian actor, who stars in “Gatsby” as drunken socialite Tom Buchanan, spoke at length about Luhrmann’s “very subtle” use of 3-D in the film. “3-D is absolutely the right thing for [the film],” said Edgerton. “I’ve seen sections of the movie and it sort of invites you in. It’s not like spectacle 3-D; you’re not being confronted by things blowing at your head. But it invites you in. What it does psychologically is very interesting, and I think you’ll forget you’re watching 3-D.” “Also, it’s lavish,” he continued. “That era was so lavish. The ’20s was about excess, so why not add a bit of excess to the filmmaking as well?” For those who remain skeptical of the use of 3-D in “Gatsby,” Edgerton expects negative opinions to change when the movie is released this December. “Baz knows absolutely everything he’s doing,” he said. “I’m really excited for all the people [groaning] about 3-D to see the movie. I hope everybody is crossing their arms and frowning to begin with, because I think they’ll unfurl by the time they see it.” What do you think of the use of 3-D in “The Great Gatsby”? Taylor Swift Supports Ethel Kennedy Doc At Sundance

Singer was seen in Park City at the red carpet for ‘Ethel,’ an upcoming HBO documentary. By Josh Wigler Taylor Swift attends the premiere of “Ethel” at Sundance on Friday Photo: Jonathan Leibson/ Getty Images PARK CITY, Utah — The Sundance Film Festival is no stranger to seeing masses of unexpected celebrities flocking to the snowy hills of Park City, but that didn’t stop the surprise appearance of singer/songwriter Taylor Swift from attracting a crowd. The “Back to December” singer hit Sundance on Friday (January 20) to attend the red-carpet premiere of “Ethel,” the HBO documentary chronicling the life of Ethel Kennedy. Indeed, a grand total of 23 members of the Kennedy clan were on hand, including the documentary’s director Rory, daughter of Ethel. What exactly prompted Taylor’s attendance at the “Ethel” red carpet? According to the musician herself in a recent interview with Vogue, Taylor had an encounter with the 83-year-old Ethel some weeks ago. Describing the woman as “effervescent,” Taylor said the meeting with the wife of the late Robert Kennedy left her feeling “starstruck” for the first time in her life. “The only time in my life I have ever been starstruck was meeting Caroline and Ethel Kennedy,” she told the magazine. “I got to spend the afternoon with Ethel a couple of weeks ago. She is one of my favorites, because you look back at the pictures of her and Bobby, and they always look like they are having the most fun out of everybody. You know, 11 kids, all these exotic animals on their property. I’ve read a lot about them.” Taylor wasn’t the only non-Kennedy who showed up to the “Ethel” red carpet. Sundance founder and legendary actor Robert Redford also hit the scene to show his appreciation and admiration for the project — and to pose for a few photos with Swift. Nicki Minaj Delays Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

Young Money rapper softens the blow of sophomore album’s delay by premiering her ‘Stupid H–‘ video. By Nadeska Alexis Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Back in November, Nicki Minaj announced that her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, would debut February 14, giving fans a little something extra to look forward to on Valentine’s Day. Now, there’s been a change of plans. Just a couple of hours after premiering the video for her latest single, “Stupid Hoe,” on Friday (January 20) Minaj announced that the album would be delayed until April. “New Album Date: April 3rd. Pink Friday: ROMAN RELOADED,” she wrote to her throngs of followers on Twitter . “But have no fear. Tons of surprises before then ;). Love Always, HB.” Fans weren’t thrilled to hear about the delay, but the new video for “Stupid Hoe” was enough to tide them over momentarily. In the colorful clip, directed by Hype Williams, Nicki is in full Barbie mode with bright makeup, her signature pink wig and prosthetic body parts, and she even gets a little ferocious, morphing into a caged tiger. With the sexy, bubblegum effect of the video, it’s almost easy to forget that the track throws a few harsh words at her female critics, most notably Lil’ Kim. When “Stupid Hoe” originally premiered in December, the song held the first clue that Minaj might perform at Super Bowl XLVI (“2012 I’m at the Super Bowl,” she raps), and the video confirms that suspicion. In the midst of the outrageous colors and special effects, the video cuts to a sign that reads “2012 Super Bowl,” which means the Young Money rapper will likely perform alongside headliner Madonna . After premiering the video, Minaj proceeded to retweet the overwhelmingly positive responses from her Barbz, who will likely be thrilled when she releases the album’s second video for “Roman in Moscow.” In December Minaj told MTV News that the visuals would set the stage for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. ” ‘Roman in Moscow’ is like a teaser to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, ” Minaj said. “When I say it’s a teaser, it’s like a trailer to the movie, it’s like setting the stage, and I just wanted to touch the surface. It’s the wackest thing on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. ” Did Nicki’s new video tide you over until the release of Roman Reloaded ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj
