‘The Hunger Games’ In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film’s premiere to casting ‘Catching Fire,’ Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the “Hunger Games” trailer Photo: Lionsgate The past year boasted a cornucopia of ” Hunger Games ” highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song “Safe and Sound.” But as bountiful as 2011’s harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23. Though our calls to Greasy Sae’s Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem’s people. Read on for our five forecasts: 1. One more trailer With just about two and a half months to go until the first film’s debut, we’d bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include , well, we’re less sure about that, but we wouldn’t mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes. 2. A full soundtrack announcement Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire’s husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I’ve already made my plea for Florence and the Machine , while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for this one. 3. The film’s premiere Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for “Hunger Games” acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we’re more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie’s premieres and publicity circuit. 4. Casting “Catching Fire” With the second “Hunger Games” installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick , Johanna, Beetee and Mags? 5. First look at “Catching Fire” Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don’t think it’s completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here’s hoping the “Catching Fire” director (whomever he/she will be) isn’t afraid to take a cue from “Breaking Dawn” helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final “Twilight” installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Kanye West In Talks To Join ‘Jetsons’ Movie, Producer Confirms

After ‘Ye mentioned his possible involvement in the film, Denise Di Novi tells MTV News about a ‘fun brainstorming conversation’ with the MC. By Eric Ditzian Kanye West Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In what would easily be the coolest movie news of 2012, Kanye West dropped word in the midst of a scorching series of Twitter updates that he was in discussions to join up with a long-gestating adaptation of “The Jetsons.” “I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie,” he wrote. Could it be true? The live-action adaptation of the futuristic Hanna-Barbera cartoon — starring George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, Jane his wife, plus their robot maid Rosie — has been in development for years, with Robert Rodriguez attached to direct at one point. MTV News put in a call to producer Denise Di Novi, who confirmed that talks with ‘Ye had indeed taken place. “Kanye’s always been a Jetsons fan, I think because he’s so into design and he loves the design aspects,” she told us exclusively. “So we had a fun brainstorming conversation.” The call took place after West touched base with producers and told them he was interested in working on the project. “We heard that he knew we were working on the Jetsons,” Di Novi said. “He reached out and said he’s a huge Jetsons fan. There are a lot of Jetsons fanatics out there, especially people that are into either futuristic science or design. He was interested in creatively brainstorming what we were doing with the movie and what ideas he might have. It was a really friendly, preliminary conversation.” At this point, though, Di Novi is unsure if Kanye will actually sign on to become creative director of “The Jetsons.” “He was going to think about it more and see if he got inspired visually,” she said. “He’s a very visual artist.” Kanye did mention in his Twitter spree that he was annoyed about one suggestion that arose during the conversation. “Someone on the call yelled out.. you should do a Jetsons tour!” he wrote. “This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course because for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour…Or Coachella or Glow in the Dark or Runaway.. you know I have real ideas.” Di Novi, however, said the tour comment was nothing more than a good-natured joke, especially because her production company is involved solely in the movie business. “We were just kind of joking about that,” said Di Nova, whose credits include “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and many Tim Burton films. “I don’t know if he would want to do that, but it was just a fun comment.” What do you think Kanye would bring to a “Jetsons” movie? ‘Breaking Dawn’ Leading In Round One Of MTV Movie Brawl!

‘Hunger Games’ races to front, while dark horses ‘John Carter’ and ‘Dark Shadows’ also show promise in 2012 tourney. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment It’s the brawl to win it all! On Tuesday, we launched MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , a winner-take-all tournament to pick this year’s must-see movie. Starting with 32 films in an epic “play-in” round to pick 16 flicks that will make it into our March Madness-style bracket, the Brawl has kicked off with fans giving it 110 percent, determined to leave it all out on the field, and ready to step up and make plays. This is what the playoffs are all about. As MTV News’ team of analysts pointed out at the start of the tourney, there are three front-runners at this early point in the competition: “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” So far, two of those flicks are living up to expectations, while one is going to have a lot of questions to answer if it can’t turn things around. “Breaking Dawn” has staked out an early lead and has got to be an odds-on favorite to secure a #1 seed when the 16-team bracket is chosen at the end of this first round. Hunger Games has got its game face on and is trailing close behind; a number-one seed for this rookie sensation seems like a lock. “Dark Knight Rises,” however, is not showing the determination and drive we’d expect from a film with such ravenous fans. Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie has settled into the #6 slot thus far and will have to pick up the slack if it expects to head into the bracket with any sort of momentum. Voting in round one is open in MTV Movie Brawl 2012! Films that have been flexing some unexpected Movie Brawl muscle include “John Carter” and “Dark Shadows.” The former hits theaters in March, the latter in May; what they both have in common are fans coming out of the woodwork to support their underdogs and turn them into dark horses. Meanwhile, no one who’s been paying attention to the cinematic landscape should be surprised that “Snow White and the Huntsman” has been playing like a savvy vet, given that the film is led by Kristen Stewart. Veteran leadership, especially from “Twilight” stars, is going to prove a key factor as the Brawl moves forward. On the other end of the spectrum, there are a few films that are going to have to look themselves in the mirror and ask if they truly want to be in this competition. “Skyfall” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” for instance, are both floundering in the back of the pack. Unless fans step up and vote for Bond and Spidey, these films are looking at an early trip home and months of second-guessing. And while we don’t expect high-brow fare like Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” to be able to tussle with the big franchises, we were hoping for more from QT fans than a first-round exit. So that’s where we stand on the second day of the competition. Anything can happen at this point. Seriously. That’s why we’ve just introduced a wild-card round in which fans will be able to add a few movies that didn’t make the original 32 — Robert Pattinson’s “Cosmopolis”? Emma Watson’s “Perks of Being a Wallflower”? — and, if they deliver enough votes, slip them into the 16-movie bracket. Voting in the first round closes Sunday, January 8, and the bracket kicks off on Monday, January 9. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! Here’s My Beef With Taylor Swift’s Hunger Games Song

The problem with Taylor Swift ’s Hunger Games single “Safe & Sound” is – sorry, Swifties – Taylor Swift. Taken on its own it’s a perfectly lovely slice of discordant Americana pop that wisps beautifully with Swift’s reedy warbling as she sings about protecting loved ones as a war rages outside. But as a Hunger Games song… as what promises to be the Hunger Games song associated with the movie (besides Rue’s iconic ditty within the film), it leaves something to be desired precisely because Swift is singing in the spirit and voice of Katniss Everdeen . And you, my adorable little Taylor, are no Katniss Everdeen. Here’s the thing: I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the oeuvre of Taylor Swift. Do I sing along every time “Love Story” comes on the radio? Fine, yes. Will I ever forget the ear-bleedingly bad live performance she gave at the 2010 Grammys, as horrified duet partner Stevie Nicks gamely powered through? Never. It haunts my waking dreams. And yet Swift is just too bubbly and cute to loathe, dammit. Remember her in Valentine’s Day , all track shorts and legs and smiles? She’s like a crinkle-haired bubblegum-singing bunny rabbit. There is no hating her. So it’s not that I hate Swift as I listen to the twangy strains of “Safe & Sound,” as backed by the band The Civil Wars. But as the first song released from the Hunger Games soundtrack it’s the film’s leading pop single, the one that will be associated with the beloved book’s adaptation from the get go in mainstream media. And it’s kind of disappointing that Swift’s voice is so overpoweringly front and center whilst crooning about life from Katniss’s perspective. Consider another recent pop single from a beloved YA film franchise: Bruno Mars’s Breaking Dawn ditty. Now that’s a catchy, hook-filled number that dances the line between Mars’s signature sound (okay, so it sounds exactly like a Bruno Mars song) while being vaguely related to the themes of the film. Something about if you go away it will rain and your father not approving of your “troublesome” boyfriend. Sure. Why not? Bruno Mars isn’t singing as if he’s Bella Swan. We are not meant to identify him with our heroine, hence Mars seems as if he was simply influenced to write a love song after Netflixing Twilight or something. In Swift’s case, she’s singing as if she is Katniss. And therein lies the problem. Give this song to a singer with a less confrontational voice (Gillian Welch, if she was 17?) and it’d be instantly more palatable. The showy breathiness of Swift’s voice never lets you forget that it’s Taylor Swift singing. I imagine this playing over the end credits of The Hunger Games , a seemingly contemplative coda to the senseless carnage Katniss lives through in the series’ first installment, and Swift’s voice needling its way into my head from the first verse, breaking through my Hunger Games afterglow. TAYLOR SWIFT TAYLOR SWIFT TAYLOR SWIFT is all I fear I’ll be able to think as I exit the theater come March. Worse: The idea of Taylor Swift channeling Katniss Everdeen – singing her life with her words! Killing me softly, and not in a good way! — is an unfathomable vision that does not compute. Put Swift in the Cornucopia and she’d be the first to go down, no question. I’d almost rather Jennifer Lawrence sung the theme song herself. I know it makes total sense for Lionsgate given the tween/teen/YA demographic of The Hunger Games movies, which aim to fill the Twilight gap, and the universal truth that all 13-year-olds love and worship Taylor Swift. But not all of us Hunger Games fans are members of the Taylor Swift fan club. Can we at least graduate to less wimpy pop stars (How about Demi Lovato ? She’s been to rehab !) for the Catching Fire soundtrack? Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Robert Pattinson Or Kristen Stewart: Who Will Rule 2012?

‘Twilight’ Tuesday takes a look at the big years ahead for the duo — aside from ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2.’ By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit What better way to kick off the new year than with a detailed analysis of what 2012 has in store for our favorite “Twilight” lovebirds, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart? In addition to the highly anticipated franchise finale, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” Pattinson and Stewart both have other projects on the horizon. For this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday, we examine the superstars’ next must-see movies. On Pattinson’s slate, there are two films of note: the saucy period piece “Bel Ami” and the David Cronenberg-directed drama “Cosmopolis.” Neither film has an official release date yet, but because “Bel Ami” opens in the U.K. on March 2, we hope that means a U.S. release will soon follow. Pattinson and co-star Uma Thurman have not underplayed the fact that there is a lot of sex in the movie, which is evident in the trailer , and there’s also plenty of Pattinson’s “crack” — his words, not ours. For the one or two Pattinson fans not interested in seeing their favorite actor’s bare bum in “Ami,” perhaps “Cosmopolis” will suit your needs. The story is based on Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name and revolves around young multimillionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) through a single day as he attempts to cross Manhattan in order to get his hair cut. According to Cronenberg, it’s a role that really showcases Pattinson’s acting chops. “Really, he’s fantastic. He’s sensational,” Cronenberg told MTV News . “Really, I’m telling you. He’s a great actor. It’s obvious in the movie. It’s not like maybe yes, maybe no. It’s obvious.” Switching gears toward Stewart’s 2012 film forecast, the 21-year-old has a very busy year ahead of her, with the release of “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “On the Road.” Fans first get to see Stewart’s sword-wielding skills as Snow White in Rupert Sanders’ new telling of the classic fairy tale. “Snow White and the Huntsman” — or “SWATH,” as it’s been commonly referred to on the Internet — opens June 1 and shows us a side of Stewart we haven’t yet seen. Stewart has been gushing about the project since filming began and might even be hoping for sequels. “I’ve got stars in my eyes. I’m literally over the moon about what I’m doing right now,” she told MTV News of her work on “Huntsman.” After that, we’ll have a look at the long-awaited “On the Road,” which doesn’t officially have a release date but has been rumored to debut at some point during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The film — based on Jack Kerouac’s beloved semiautobiographical treatise on the Beat Generation and his road trips with a collection of colorful characters — features an eclectic cast, including Garrett Hedlund, Tom Sturridge, Kirsten Dunst, Sam Riley, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortenson and Steve Buscemi. Who has the edge here? We have lots of naked Pattinson vs. a sword-wielding Stewart — it’s very tough to call. Not to mention the fact that they’ll be back onscreen together in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” on November 16. Perhaps the 2012 winners will be fans of the “Twilight” twosome! Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @karawarner with your thoughts and suggestions for future “Twilight” Tuesday columns! Related Videos MTV First: ‘Breaking Dawn’

THG Presents: 12 Movies to Get Excited For in 2012!

With the lowest box office gross in 16 years, 2011 was a year the movie industry would like to forget, despite a handful of mammoth hits. Will 2012 turn things around? Time will tell, but there are no shortage of exciting films landing in theaters in the next 12 months. From action thrillers to rom-coms to ‘tween fare, 2012 has it all! That said, here’s a look at 12 movies THG is particularly excited for this year: Men in Black 3 Trailer 12. Men in Black 3 Admit it, rolled your eyes when you first heard this was being made, but you’re excited. Or you were just fist-pumping from the start. Either way, here they come! 11. The Bourne Legacy Okay, we don’t really care about seeing this. We just want to see if President Obama slams Jeremy Renner’s performance at the White House Correspondents’ dinner. 10. What to Expect When You’re Expecting Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Glee’s Matthew Morrison make for easily the most-hyped must-see rom-com of the new year. J. Lo does it all, baby! The Avengers Movie Trailer 9. The Avengers So many of your favorite Marvel superheroes in one film? America hasn’t geeked out so hard since … every other blockbuster of the last five years. Still, awesome! 8. Paranormal Activity 4 The low-budget, high-earning franchise just got the green light for a fourth installment due out late this year, and fans can’t get enough. We’re freaked out already! 7. World War Z Fittingly, this Brad Pitt zombie-killing romp is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2012. Eat it, Mayan apocalypse calendar doomsday (and zombies)! The Hobbit Trailer 6. The Hobbit Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth. We need not elaborate further, especially not after the trailer (above) raised already high expectations for the LOTR prequel. 5. Rock of Ages Tom Cruise proved he’s still got his box office mojo with M:I-4 . Can that translate into success for this hair band-era epic? We’ll be raising our lighters regardless. 4. The Dark Knight Rises Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Badass Bane’s borderline inaudible voice. Christopher Nolan’s final chapter. The hype and subplots are building by the day. Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer 3. Snow White and the Huntsman Charlize Theron is the reason to see this Kristen Stewart vehicle, though we have high hopes for K-Stew as the title character. Only reason she’s not #1 and #2 here is …
