Michael Jackson’s Daughter, Paris, Visits ‘Ellen’

Paris reveals best advice Michael gave her. By Gil Kaufman Paris Jackson appears on “Ellen” Photo: Warner Bros Paris Jackson will give her first-ever solo interview on Thursday morning (December 15) when she appears on “The Ellen DeGenres Show” to promote her upcoming acting debut. After a cloistered childhood, Paris, 13, the only daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson , opened up to Ellen about her formerly sheltered life and how her dad’s music inspired her acting. In excerpts released before the airing, Paris explained that her dad helped her prepare for her upcoming first movie role, in which she’ll play Lundon in “Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys,” an adaptation of the fantasy series based on writer Dennis Christen’s novels. “When I was really little my dad was in the movie ‘Moonwalker’ and I knew he could sing really well but I didn’t know he could act,” she said. “I saw that and I said, ‘Wow, I want to be just like him.’ ” She said Michael also gave her at-home acting lessons. “We would do improv together. He would give us little scenarios. He would (say), ‘OK, in this scene you’re going to cry’ and I’d cry on the spot.” In one of the most (literally) revealing moments, Paris explained what it felt like for herself and her siblings, Prince and Blanket, to wear disguises for most of their young lives. “I’m like, ‘This is stupid. Why am I wearing a mask?’ But I kind of realized the older I got like he only tried to protect us and he’d explain that to us too,” she said. The masks, in fact, helped the three kids live as normal a life as they possibly could considering that their dad was one of the most-sought-after paparazzi targets on earth. “I do have like a regular childhood,” she said. “I mean, I’m treated the same. When I came to [my new school] they didn’t know who I was. I was like, ‘Yes, I have a chance to be normal.'” When asked if she realized how big a deal her dad was when she was a child, Paris admitted, “I just thought, ‘He’s got a few songs out,’ but I figured everyone did that.” In the action-animation hybrid “Lundon,” Paris will voice the lead character, a human, in a fantasy adventure in which “sea magic turns a dolphin into a human, a teenage boy into a dragonfly and a loving jellyfish queen into an evil fairy godmother.” Among the other voices in the movie are former CNN personality Larry King and his wife, Shawn, and ex ‘NSYNC member Joey Fatone. Paris told DeGeneres that her dad warned her before his surprise death in June 2009 that he would not be around forever. “He said, ‘If I die tomorrow always remember what I told you.’ I took his advice and I remembered everything he told me,” she said. 9 Suggested New Titles for Will Ferrell’s Dubious New Comedy Casa de mi Padre

Maybe I’m still annoyed nearly ten years after I saw Anchorman in theaters and was so angry with its juvenile, unfunny, dude-baiting humor that I’m sour to any movie whose theme is ” Will Ferrell is a hilariously alpha dimwit!” — but I’m pretty sure Ferrell’s new jam Casa de mi Padre with Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna is downright moronic for real. In fact, the sophisticated-sounding title isn’t a good fit for the film (though it is written entirely in Spanish) and ought to be replaced. Here are nine titles we’d consider, along with the movie’s new teaser trailer.

‘Drive’ Is MTV’s #2 Movie Of 2011

Hard to describe and hard to forget, the film (and Ryan Gosling’s Driver) oozed cool. By Kevin P. Sullivan Ryan Gosling in “Drive” Photo: FilmDistrict In October, a Michigan woman filed a lawsuit against FilmDistrict for misleading her about the film “Drive.” She claimed the movie’s trailer promised a more action-packed film and “promoted the film ‘Drive’ as very similar to the ‘Fast and Furious,’ or similar, series of movies.” But the suit succeeded in only one respect: It perfectly described why we love “Drive” and why it’s #2 on MTV’s Best Movies of 2011 list. Everything about “Drive” subverts expectations. The main character, played by Ryan Gosling , doesn’t have a name besides “Driver” and rarely speaks. We root for him despite knowing nothing about him or what’s going on behind his stares. All the audience has to go off is his affection for his down-the-hall neighbor Irene, played by Carey Mulligan , and his sudden, violent outbursts, which surprise with horror levels of gore. This is all the more shocking when you consider that for the first 30 minutes of the movie, the story plays out in a slow and quiet way, more like a romantic comedy than a crime thriller. Driver’s relationship with Irene puts the audience so off its guard that when the violence finally erupts, it’s instantly unforgettable. Director Nicolas Winding Refn sets up the film’s opening chase sequence in a way that looks and feels like a “Fast and Furious” movie, but as soon as it starts, it stops — literally. Driver parks the getaway car to remain out of sight. It’s a subtle move that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. And speaking of tone, what other film captured as much attention for its use of music and atmosphere? The synth-laced soundtrack by Cliff Martinez and a collection of electro-pop songs had everyone talking. Out of context, the choice for the music doesn’t make sense, but the second “Nightcall” drops in over the neon-pink title, all the pieces come together. When describing the movie to others, most people struggle until they stumble upon the word “cool.” “Drive” is cool in a way that most action movies with their overly muscular heroes and explosions could only dream of being. Gosling and Refn captured an exact balance of warmth and coldness, emotion and indifference that makes the film’s look, sound, story and characters feel like instant classics. All of these elements would make for a great film, but that would mean ignoring a stellar supporting cast. Albert Brooks oozed menace and dark humor as the villainous pizza parlor owner/low-level mob boss Bernie Rose, and Bryan Cranston continued his streak as the most likable actor working today as Driver’s mentor Shannon. For all its surprises and unexpected turns, “Drive” is our second favorite movie of the year. It took tired movie clich

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Needs More ‘Aggressive’ Chanting

‘If you want to be heard, get a little louder,’ composer Hans Zimmer tells fans contributing to film’s soundtrack. By Kara Warner Hans Zimmer Photo: MTV News Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer made Batman fans’ dreams come true earlier this year when it was announced they would have an opportunity to contribute to “The Dark Knight Rises” score by recording and uploading their own versions of an official chant at UJAM . On top of that, fans got an early listen of the chant via the first photo reveal of Tom Hardy as Bane . Now, with a few lucky audiences getting early glimpses of the highly anticipated film via its six-minute prologue , there is more of the chant to hear, which has us wondering if it will be part of Bane’s theme in the movie. When MTV News caught up with Zimmer himself recently, we asked how it’s been scoring for the seriously villainous Bane and how much of the chant will be in the film. “Chris [Nolan] and I came up with the idea of the chant a long time ago. I had this great idea, or maybe Chris and I did, of hundreds of thousands of people chanting. Well, as soon as you say the words hundreds of thousands of people, there goes the privacy, because you have to let people know what you’re doing.” Zimmer said the original chant that was used for the big Bane reveal was made with just a few of his closest friends, so he has very high hopes for what has been sent in from fans already. “It’s nice to have the whole world join in on a chant. My only problem is that they’re so well-behaved on the chanting right now,” he said. “If anybody goes onto UJAM right now, I need a little bit more. If you want to be heard, get a little louder, get a little more aggressive,” he encouraged. So is this great big collaborative chant Bane’s theme in the film? “It’s not necessarily his through-line; it will be an aspect of it,” Zimmer said. “Right now we’re all focusing on the chant because that’s all you guys are hearing. It’s a very small part of the score, but I think there is something wonderful about finding a way of having the people who really care for this movie be participants in this movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

John Leguizamo Pushes Boundaries In MTV’s ‘Pioneers’ Speaker Series

‘I’m coming into the party, I’m going to be somebody and you can’t stop me,’ actor says of his career pursuits. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Sway Calloway John Leguizamo Photo: MTV News Triple-threat talent John Leguizamo has made a career out of pushing boundaries, not being afraid to speak his mind and never taking no for an answer. As such, we were proud to have him as part of our MTV Pioneers Speaker Series, where he sat down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to talk about breaking the mold, not being typecast and what success means to him over a career that has included roles in film, television and on Broadway . One of his many groundbreaking roles was the beloved character Chi-Chi from “To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” a role to which Leguizamo said he gave 100 percent. “I just went all out. I wanted awards and sh–, so I wasn’t playing,” he joked about his motivations for taking on the character. “I was going to take no prisoners. I was on a vegetarian no-protein [diet], so all my muscles would disappear. I stopped training, I would just run like crazy. In the movie, they were great, we did a lot of research. We went to all the drag queen clubs, like Escuelita, which used to exist here [in New York City], with all the Latin drag queens, and we had a godmother drag queen who would put us through the paces every day,” he recalled of his transformation with co-stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes. “We worked every day for hours and hours every day until we could get it perfectly drag queen-like.” When asked about how he approached being a minority and how that affected his decisions, Leguizamo said that you have to know what you want and go for it. “You’ve got to be thoughtful about your career. When you’re a minority — and I don’t really even like that word anymore because we’re not as minority as we used to be — you have to think about what you’re saying and what you’re leaving behind. When I was a little kid, we didn’t see [ourselves] on TV or anywhere. It was weird because you didn’t feel like you were a part of the American fiber,” he recalled. “Latin people, we have a 45 to 50 percent dropout rate in this country, and I understand that. It’s a tragedy and shouldn’t be happening, but you understand it. You don’t feel connected in that positive way that your people and you are going to make it, and ‘this is your chance and this is your opportunity,’ no, you feel like you’re not really a part of it. “You have to crash into the party even if you’re not invited,” he said, indicating that those who have dreams of “making it” have to carve out their own career paths. “I was going to be that guy, I didn’t care I wasn’t invited. ‘I’m coming into the party, I’m going to be somebody and you can’t stop me.’ ”

‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Is ‘More Sophisticated’

‘We all raised our game, creatively,’ director Guy Ritchie tells MTV News of ‘Game of Shadows.’ By Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros If you’ve caught a trailer for the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which hits theaters Friday, you might have noticed that there is a lot going on. Holmes ( Robert Downey Jr. ) and Watson ( Jude Law ) have carried their bromance over from the 2009 original, with Holmes having issues with Watson’s pending marriage and his wily love interest Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams). Work-wise, the curiously successful Holmes and Watson duo now have to contend with a mysterious new female character (Noomi Rapace) and a formidable and familiar future supervillain, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). When MTV News caught up with Downey and director Guy Ritchie, we asked them to explain what new excitement “Game of Shadows” offers that we didn’t see in the first film. “I think it’s a superior product, and I’m very tough on these sorts of things,” Downey said. “I think we return to one of the great original face-offs-with-a-supervillain stories in Arthur Conan Doyle’s lexicon, and I think that it’s a little bit more thoughtful. I think the female roles are much more central. It’s a more nicely balanced bit of entertainment.” Ritchie admitted that the success of the first film meant he had pleased audiences enough that he could make this movie for himself in a way, zeroing in on his sensibilities and what he likes in an action film. “We all raised our game, creatively. Rob and the rest of the team took it pretty seriously. We think we’re onto something here, and we don’t want to take it for granted,” Ritchie explained. “We try to give you a more sophisticated plot and more sophisticated action. All in all, we tried to basically put this film on ‘roids.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
