‘Breaking Dawn’ Passes $500 Million Mark Worldwide

Movie hits half-billion mark in less than two weeks. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Summit “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1”
looks to dominate the box office for a good long time. After two weeks atop
the list of top-grossing movies, the penultimate film in the vampires and werewolves epic has already raked in more than $508 million worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the movie is the ninth film this year to push past the half-billion mark globally, hitting the mark in just 12 days of release. So far, the movie has grossed $223.4 million in North America and $285 million internationally, for a grand total of $508.4 million. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years,” said Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement. “Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella.” MTV News asked experts how long this domination can go on, especially since the only competition this weekend is the NC-17-rated full-frontal indie flick “Shame.” “It’ll be close between [‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’] and ‘The Muppets,’ because [‘The Muppets’] has much better word of mouth,” said Boxoffice.com’s Phil Contrino, noting that it was too soon to say which would come out on top. He also predicted that the movie should finish its domestic run in the $300 million range and stay near the top until such holiday blockbusters as “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol” on December 21. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on November 16, 2012. ‘Breaking Dawn’ No Turkey At Box Office

‘Twilight’ flick stays on top, besting family fare including ‘Muppets,’ ‘Hugo.’ By Ryan J. Downey Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment The reemergence of Kermit and his pals wasn’t enough to knock Bella Swan and her new husband off the box-office throne. remained the #1 movie in America over the long holiday weekend as the romantic vampires-and-werewolves flick fended off competition from PG-rated newcomers “Arthur Christmas” and “Hugo.” The second-to-last “Twilight” movie generated an additional $62.3 million from Wednesday to Sunday for an overall domestic total of $221.3 million, according to estimates released by Summit Entertainment. Despite suffering from the same critical drubbing typically inflicted upon “Twilight” movies, “Breaking Dawn” triumphed against a trio of well-reviewed flicks with broad family appeal. Comedic actor Jason Segel’s “Muppets” debuted with $42 million over the five-day period. The celebrity-cameo-filled revival of the beloved television and movie franchise opened much more strongly than previous Muppet movies. Even with adjustments for ticket-price inflation, the newest “Muppets” overtook 1996’s “Muppet Treasure Island,” the previous series’ strongest box-office debut. The reboot of sorts was a labor of love for co-writer and star Segel, who made his adoration for felt puppets clear in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” “Happy Feet 2” was the #3 movie over the weekend. But with a production budget nearly triple that of “The Muppets,” the animated sequel’s $44 million gross ($18.5 million of which was collected over the weekend) couldn’t keep the Australian digital production facility that worked on the movie from laying off 600 of its 700 employees, according to a report from Australian film news site . “Arthur Christmas” opened far behind “The Muppets” at #4 with just $17 million. The 3-D movie, from the British animation house behind “Wallace & Gromit,” cost Sony Pictures an estimated $100 million to produce. Aardman Animations’ “Flushed Away” and “Chicken Run” earned more in their respective three-day opening weekends than the five-day total for their latest movie. Despite playing on 2,000 fewer screens than “Arthur Christmas,” Martin Scorsese’s live-action 3-D love letter to classic cinema, “Hugo,” was #5 with $15.4 million. The filmmaker best known for violent adult dramas like “Goodfellas” based his first foray into family fare on the popular children’s book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” Roughly 75 percent of the film’s grosses were reportedly from pricier 3-D screenings, according to Paramount. “Hugo” played at 1277 venues and is scheduled to expand to 2000 on December 9. The weekend wasn’t without Oscar-bait dramas for adults. The Weinstein Company’s “My Week With Marilyn” made $2 million in 244 theaters while the company’s black-and-white silent film, “The Artist,” made $210,000 in just four New York and Los Angeles theaters. The box office was down 12 percent overall from the same period last year, when “Tangled” was new in theaters against a “Harry Potter” movie and “MegaMind.” “Tangled” was #1 with $68.7 million compared to the $62.3 million made by “Breaking Dawn.” Check out everything we’ve got on and “The Muppets.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Bad News, Julia Roberts: Mirror, Mirror’s Online Praise Might Be Studio-Generated

Last week, you and I watched the first trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror, Mirror in slack-jawed horror. (After all, aren’t Snow White adaptations supposed to be about the titular princess and not Julia Roberts’s aging concerns, Bollywood dance numbers and Armie Hammer’s impression of a dog?) Surprisingly though, not all of the Internet’s feedback was negative. A few brave souls commented on the Relativity trailer enthusiastically — and now MovieMavericks.com is claiming that some of those suspicious thumbs-up reviews came from the same source.

Big Time Rush To Sing National Anthem On Thanksgiving

Nickelodeon stars will precede Dallas Cowboys/ Miami Dolphins game. By Christina Garibaldi Big Time Rush Photo: MTV News To say this month has been a “Big Time Rush” for James Maslow, Logan Henderson, Carlos Pena and Kendall Schmidt is an understatement. The boys from the hit Nickelodeon show released their sophomore album, Elevated, on Monday, just wrapped up shooting their new flick (“Big Time Movie”) and on Thanksgiving, they will be singing the National Anthem before the start of the football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins. MTV News caught up with Big Time Rush on Tuesday (November 22) to talk about their big Turkey Day performance. “We are going to Dallas, which is where I grew up pretty much for 18 years of my life,” Henderson said about performing in front of his hometown crowd at Cowboys Stadium. Most of the members of Big Time Rush are big-time Cowboys fans. “It’s American’s team,” Schmidt said, while Maslow added, “Every American is a Cowboys fan.” Not so fast, James: It seems Pena is torn between rooting for Dallas or his hometown team, the Dolphins. “I like Miami and the Dolphins; they’re my home team,” Pena explained. “But the Cowboys gave me this job to sing the National Anthem, so, who do you go with?” Well, Carlos, you might have a fellow Dolphins fan in Miami resident Enrique Iglesias, who will be performing the halftime show. If you are too busy with Thanksgiving Day plans to catch Big Time Rush in action, the group is planning to take their act on the road for their “Better With U” Tour. The band’s first United States tour will kick off in February. Will you watch Big Time Rush sing the National Anthem? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Big Time Rush
