Al Pacino Did Not Want Michelle Pfeiffer For Scarface and 8 Other Revelations About the Gangster Classic

In honor of Scarface ‘s upcoming Blu-ray release, Universal Studios hosted a lavish soiree on Tuesday night to celebrate the Brian De Palma gangster flick which has become a machismo cult classic since its poor critical reception in 1983. At the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the event featured Cuban cuisine, desserts shaped like lines of cocaine, a Ludacris concert and a Q&A panel with stars Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia and F. Murray Abraham, as well as Scarface producer Martin Bregman. From their Scarface -style thrones on stage — bathed in red light and surrounded by Roman sculptures, natch — the cast reflected on their movie’s present-day popularity, machine-gun injuries and Eddie Murphy. The nine most interesting revelations follow.

Tom Cruise: Scared of Katie Holmes!

Who knew Katie Holmes had such a horrifying streak? After screening her latest flick, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark , for her husband Tom Cruise recently, Katie said it left the actor sufficiently spooked. Holmes said Cruise had to watch another film before retiring for the evening. “I’m not sure what he watched … Maybe The Sound of Music?” Our partner site, Movie Fanatic, just saw Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (follow the above link for more on the film) and can confirm that yes, it is scary. Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro tells the story of a modern family living in an old Rhode Island mansion that has secrets buried deep below the ground. Holmes, a fan of the classics from the horror genre, admits that she appreciated del Toro’s take on the steadfast haunted-house movie storyline. She also liked that the film allowed her to be a mother figure to a young daughter, just like she is in real life to Suri Cruise . She’s five now. Five! [Photo: WENN.com]

Bennett, whose last VMA appearance was in 1993, will introduce the tribute, which includes footage of him recording “Body and Soul” with Winehouse this past March at Abbey Road Studios in London. “It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse, and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul,’ it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” Bennett said in a statement. The single and video will be released by Columbia Records on September 14, Amy’s birthday, in support of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, established by the late singer’s family to help a number of charities connected with children and young people. I know I’m in the minority when I go on and on and about how excited I am [1] for Real Steel. ‘The Avengers’ Assemble, With Other Disney Stars, At D23

We recap all the sneak peeks and news to come out of the Mouse House’s movie convention. By Terri Schwartz, with additional reporting by Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth Photo: MTV News “The Avengers” might not be assembling in theaters until May 4, 2012, but fans who attended Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim, California, over the weekend were lucky enough to catch the cast joining forces in person. MTV News was on the scene too, so stay tuned for our interviews with the stars. In the meantime, here’s a little recap of the weekend’s highlights: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Cobie Smulders all showed up to unveil two new clips from the upcoming superhero flick. It was the first time the group has come together publicly since 2010’s San Diego Comic-Con , and the first time “How I Met Your Mother” star Smulders has been part of the promotion for the movie. Both of the clips shown focused on the showdown between the Avengers and “Thor” bad boy Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, AceShowBiz reports. The first showed Loki trapped in a high-tech chamber in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier, chatting with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. It is revealed that the chamber was actually created to hold the Hulk, but will hold Loki because he threatens Earth with war and “a force [he] can’t control.” The second scene featured Downey’s Tony Stark chatting with Loki in a private bar. “Let’s do a head count,” Loki says. “Two world class assassins” — the camera cuts to shots of Hawkeye and Black Widow — “a demigod” — cut to Thor — “a living legend who actually lives up to the legend” — a glimpse of Captain America. Stark responds by saying, “And you, big fella, you have managed to piss off every single one of them.” “I have an army,” Loki says. Stark strikes back, “We have a Hulk.” When MTV caught up with Downey and Hemsworth after the panel, the two were coy about any scenes other than the ones that have been revealed. Downey joked that his favorite scene in the movie was the one “in which we don’t reveal anything about the plot,” but Hemsworth admitted that his favorite was already revealed. “One of our first days was the whole assembly,” he said, referring to the scene that was revealed at the end of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” “That was pretty crazy. Not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whatever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and the Hulk. It’s exciting.” Marvel wasn’t the only Disney division doing some heavy lifting at D23, though. Pixar showed up with a slew of announcements, including some news about unannounced upcoming films, ScreenRant recapped. First on the docket is “Brave,” the Scotland-based animated adventure that hits in 2012. In addition to showing some new clips of the movie, Pixar also released a fleshed out plot synopsis that gives “Brave” more context. “Monsters University” received a summer 2013 release date slot, and Pixar also added two yet-untitled animated flicks to its upcoming releases. The first, directed by “Up” helmer Bob Peterson, speculates on what would happen if dinosaurs never became extinct and should hit theaters in fall 2013. The second, directed by “Monsters, Inc.” ‘s Pete Doctor, explores inside the human mind and should be released at some point in 2014. Also on the animation front, Shock Till You Drop reported on the “Frankenweenie” sizzle reel that was presented at the panel, which included footage from the flick, behind-the-scenes moments and interviews with the cast members. The title card for the movie was also unveiled, as well as the news that Danny Elfman will be composing the flick’s score. “Frankenweenie” hits theaters October 5, 2012. Jason Segel showed up with his “The Muppets” co-stars Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to present two new clips from the movie, Entertainment Weekly reported. Clip number one featured an inside look at Kermit’s house and showed that he’s stuck in his ’80s heyday, while clip number two showed off Muppets Rolf, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and Dr. Teeth trying to get the old Muppet Theater back in working order. Not to be outdone, the cast and crew of “John Carter of Mars” presented four new clips from their upcoming sci-fi flick. Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins stood with director Andrew Stanton to show off the footage, EW recounted. The unfinished clips featured scenes where the titular Carter first lands on Mars, gets captured by Thark leader Tars Tarkas, has to battle his way out of a gladiatorial arena and tries to convince his lady love not to go through with her arranged marriage. Vulture said the clips had “a distinctly Pixar sense of humor,” which can be attributed to Stanton’s history with the animation company. The last big presentation of D23 was for “Oz, the Great and Powerful,” and though there was no finished footage, the panel did get to see James Franco’s wizard and Michelle Williams’ Glinda in costume. AceShowBiz said that a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, narrated by director Sam Raimi, displayed concept art for the Emerald City, munchkins and the yellow brick road. The movie is currently in production in Detroit and is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2013. ‘Ghost Rider 2’ Trailer: An Expert Analysis

‘Spirit of Vengeance’ sneak peek has MTV Movies team excited for what’s to come from the Nicolas Cage superhero. By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler “Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance” Photo: Columbia Pictures The “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” trailer popped up online late last week, and what else is there to say about it other than Nicolas Cage closes out the new footage by pissing fire? Well, it turns out there’s a heck of a lot left to say, which is why the MTV Movies team jumped into the comic book action for an expert commentary. The trailer begins sweetly, with a score reminiscent of “Lost” and some epic title cards: “He fought the curse … evil will force him … to face his demon.” But any wacky notion that directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who also helmed the “Crank” films, have delivered a kinder, gentler Johnny Blaze is quickly dismissed when the music picks up and the flames flicker to reveal our first look at the new Ghost Rider. It’s a look the directors have spoken with us about at length. “We wanted this black skull, with this gasoline fire and this black, inky smoke to get this real feeling of explosions and fire and heat,” Neveldine said at San Diego Comic-Con . “That’s something we really went for: ‘Let’s feel the heat in this movie.’ ” The grittiness of this Ghost Rider most definitely shines through in the trailer. Charcoal skull? Check. A whiff of gasoline seemingly rising off the screen? Check. Neveldine and Taylor not holding back in this trailer and delivering a full-on look at our hero right off the bat? Check. And they don’t stop there, quickly showing off Ghost Rider’s signature move, the Penance Stare: He looks into your eyes and makes you feel all the pain and suffering you’ve ever inflicted on other people. This is no fairy-tale power. This is not X-ray vision. This is a hard-core demonic power, one which was not played very well in the first film. Even in this quick shot, the Stare looks very cool. Speaking of demonic powers, the trailer got us thinking this film might not just be a sequel to the 2007 original, but to Cage’s “Drive Angry,” the 3-D action flick that had the actor busting out of hell to inflict gory revenge on his enemies. Crazy talk? Sure. But since “Drive Angry” hardly performed well enough at the box office to justify a sequel, we’ll take whatever we can get. We get to see plenty of Ghost Rider here, but the trailer gives us the briefest glimpse of Johnny Whitworth as Blackout. He’s part human, part demon, all bad news. Whitworth is a guy to watch — hardly a household name but one who delivered an energetic supporting role in the largely forgettable “Limitless.” With Neveldine and Taylor in control, there is serious potential for killer fight scenes between Blackout and Ghost Rider. Another character we get a peek at is young Danny Ketch. Comic fans will know him as one of the guys who eventually becomes Ghost Rider. The big departure here is that Danny is a kid. In the comics, he’s a young man. While this film probably won’t turn into a passing of the torch from Cage’s Johnny Blaze to Danny as the next Ghost Rider, it’s nonetheless cool to see filmmakers laying the mythological groundwork. The trailer ends with pure, absurd fun: Ghost Rider declaring that it feels awesome when he pees fire. That’s essentially how Cage feels about the movie as a whole. “The Ghost Rider is just the coolest-looking superhero, and it has to be the one that goes to film and looks the best,” the actor told us at SDCC. “I think they’ve achieved that with this.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . My name is Cassidy and I’m 16 years old. I love Justin…

My name is Cassidy and I’m 16 years old. I love Justin Bieber so much and I would never have thought in a million years I would ever meet him…but like Justin says: NEVER SAY NEVER! One of my good friends Paige and I would always talk about him in our biology class and she would always tell me about her Bieber experiences, and would say that I’ll meet him one day. On Tuesday morning, August 16th, I woke up and got all these phone calls that Justin was in town at our local sky high and trampoline place. I was with my friend and we literally got dressed and rushed over to the movies (Muvico) around 11:30am because we thought for some reason he might go there that night to watch a movie since he has been there with Jaden Smith before. I was calling all my friends to see if they were at the mall and if they had seen Justin there but they said no. I don’t know why but I had this gut feeling that he was going to be there. I waited in front of the movie theatre literally all day and by 9:00pm my friend Natalie and I were about to give up and leave because it was about to close anyways. My friend said we should just go, he’s not coming. I told her no we can’t, I still have a feeling he might come! Then about an hour later around 10:00pm I see a group of girls running towards someone and I look over a car and it was JUSTIN BIEBER! I felt like I was dreaming. He was with Jaden Smith and Moises Arias too. I started running to him but he was already running towards me because he had to hurry and get in his car before girls started attacking him! I quickly asked him if I could get a picture together and he said, “Yeah is your camera already on?” and I said “Yessss!” Then his bodyguard took the picture. I honestly couldn’t remember anything after the picture. I don’t even remember saying thank you and if he said anything, I was just so shocked/speechless that I just met and got a picture with Justin! After that my friend Natalie asked for a picture and with him and he said, “Sorry I can’t. I’m in a rush” but she at least got a picture of his back getting into his car. It was seriously a dream come true for me! My friend and I walked to the curb of the parking lot to watch him drive away and that’s when I started crying so hard. I’ve never cried so hard in my life. The very first person I called was my friend Paige because we had been talking throughout the day. I then called my mom and told her the same thing and she thought I was in a car accident or something because I was crying so hard and couldn’t talk. That whole time I honestly thought it was all a dream, it just didn’t feel real to me, it was so crazy! I am most definitely proud to say that I met Justin Bieber and I’m going to frame that picture of us and keep it forever! My dreams finally came true, I can’t thank Justin enough for what he does for his fans and I can truly call him my inspiration! I love you Justin Drew Bieber. – @ cassidyaddison Original post: My name is Cassidy and I’m 16 years old. I love Justin…
